Zofia Ernst (1918–1994): l’arte di vivere, l’arte di tradurre

L’obiettivo dell’articolo è quello di presentare la figura di Zofia Ernst (1918–1994), amante della cultura e della letteratura della Penisola Appenninica, e nota traduttrice della letteratura italiana per adulti e per ragazzi. Avvalendomi del modello storiografico di D’hulst (2001, 2010) e dell’approccio topobiografico di Kaczmarek (2013), analizzo i momenti chiave della biografia di Zofia Ernst. Uno studio attento della vita di una traduttrice ha permesso di descrivere l’ambiente in cui visse e lavorò, come pure di delineare il suo impatto sull’immagine della letteratura italiana in Polonia entro il 1994. Infine, mi sono concentrata sulle traduzioni della letteratura italiana per l’infanzia e l’adolescenza, preparate da Zofia Ernst negli anni 1954–1974 per la casa editrice Nasza Księgarnia, finora non studiate in maniera approfondita. The aim in this article is to present the life and work of Zofia Ernst (1918–1994), an ardent connoisseur of Italian culture and literature and an accomplished translator of Italian books for adults and children. Drawing on D’hulst’s historiographic model (2001, 2010) and Kaczmarek’s topobiographical approach (2013), I address key moments in Ernst’s life. The focus on the life story of this one translator helps me outline the milieu in which she lived and worked as well as show her impact on how the representations of Italian literature took shape in Poland before 1994. I also explore translations of Italian literature for children and young adults that Zofia Ernst produced for the Polish publisher Nasza Księgarnia during the period of 1954–1974, as they still form an under-examined field.

L’affermarsi nell’Italia postunitaria di un nuovo genere editoriale: il caso di Cordelia

Questo articolo propone come oggetto di studio un periodico per ragazze, fondatoa Firenze nel 1881 per volontà di Angelo De Gubernatis, che ne fu anche primo direttore, oltre cheeditore. Cordelia, così si intitola la rivista, si presenta come un contributo all’educazione delle suegiovani lettrici e al momento della fondazione è soltanto una delle molteplici iniziative educativenel campo dell’editoria per l’infanzia di fine Ottocento. Tuttavia, a differenza di molte altre testatedall’effimera esistenza, Cordelia spiccherà per la sua longevità e diventerà l’emblema di un genereeditoriale specifico, quello dei periodici per ragazze. Ripercorrendo la storia editoriale della rivistanel periodo 1881–1917, questo contributo intende mettere in luce alcuni dei fattori che sono statiritenuti importanti per l’insolito successo di Cordelia. Facendo riferimento soprattutto agli studi svoltinell’ambito dei periodical studies sugli aspetti caratterizzanti del periodico, si vuole indagare il modoin cui i direttori e gli editori della rivista hanno sfruttato la forma seriale ed eterogenea di questogenere editoriale. Lo studio ha rivelato come, dopo lo scarso interesse suscitato all’inizio, la rivistaabbia via via raggiunto un pubblico più grande durante la direzione di Ida Baccini e, successivamente,di Maria Maiocchi Plattis, meglio conosciuta con lo pseudonimo Jolanda. Questo fatto è ascrivibile siaalla struttura che le due direttrici impongono ai fascicoli, sia al rapporto che instaurano con le proprielettrici. Da ciò si è dedotto che le due direttrici che sono succedute al primo direttore hanno saputoadeguare la rivista ai gusti del pubblico, dimostrando una maggiore consapevolezza delle potenzialitàlegate alla forma caratteristica del periodico e dell’importanza del proprio ruolo come direttrici. This article proposes as its research object a girls’ periodical, Cordelia, founded in Florencein 1881 by publisher and first editor-in-chief Angelo De Gubernatis. Cordelia presented itself asa contribution to the education of its young female readers and, at the moment of its foundation, it wasonly one of many educational ventures in the publishing industry for children’s literature at the endof the 19 th century. However, unlike many other more ephemeral periodicals, Cordelia would standout for its longevity and become emblematic for a certain publishing genre, that of girls’ periodicals.While retracing the years 1881–1917 in the magazine’s history, this article intends to shed lighton some of the factors considered important for Cordelia’s extraordinary success. By referring toprevious research within the field of periodical studies on the particular characteristics of periodicalpublications, the article examines the ways in which editors and publishers took advantage of theserial and heterogeneous form of this publishing genre. This study has shown that the magazine,despite its meagre success in its first years of publishing, reached a wider audience over time duringthe editorship of Ida Baccini and, later, that of Maria Maiocchi Plattis, better known by her pen name,Jolanda. This later success can be attributed to the ability of these two editors to create a recognisableproduct as well as to the relationship that they managed to establish with their young readers. Fromthis, it can be inferred that Baccini and Jolanda succeeded in adapting the magazine to the readers’taste and, by doing so, they showed a greater comprehension of the potential of the periodical’scharacteristics and of the importance of their own roles as chief editors.

У раду се анализирају приповетке Лепосаве Мијушковић. Показује се њихово место у контексту српске књижевности и анализира се рецепција током живота и након смрти ауторке. Примењени приповедачки поступци попут технике тока свести и фрагментарност текста, као и дисконтинуирано схватањe времена и субјективистичка перспектива и интериоризација приповедања, ове приповетке лоцира у књижевноисторијски контекст почетка српске модерне, који подразумева раскид са реалистичком приповетком. Анализом садржаја приповедака дефинише се љубавна прича као њихова тематска окосница на основу чега се ове приповетке укључују у љубавни дискурс литературе. Показује се њихова припадност интимистичким жанровима карактеристичним за женску књижевност почетка XX века и препознаје се припадност фукоовски схваћеном жанру исповести који, поред љубавне тематике, подразумева аутобиографску заснованост и аналитичност наратива. Анализом природе главних ликова показују се генеративни моменти и перформативност њиховог родног идентитета, где се као кључни моменти анализом издвајају прекорачење забране и меланхолија.

The purpose of my study is to examine the representation of the femme fatale in Max Beerbohm’s Zuleika Dobson. The turn of the century was a period when the traditional role of women underwent rapid changes and the appearance of the New Woman provoked controversial reactions. In literature the profound anxiety caused by the New Woman found expression in the reemerging archetype of the femme fatale. Zuleika Dobson is an exaggerated version of the femme fatale type and at the same time a reflection of the period’s New Woman.

In his "Orpheus", Jean COCTEAU (1889-1963) seized on the Orphic myth by making Orphism, as a magic power of language, one of his favorite themes. The myth of the legendary Orpheus, this tragic hero of love, stronger than death, is capitalized in the very heart of Cocteau's dramatic universe as a preferen-tial theme that leads to the drama of the poet, the creator. The author even wanted to make "the myth of the playwright - poet skinned alive". However, the integration of the archetypal structures that are the myths in the modern mentality is a desire to rejuvenate them, without worrying about anachronisms, treating them without solemnity and desecrating them wisely.

Beatific or Beaten? Encounters with Nature from Transcendentalists to The Beats and Hippies

Initially, the earliest ideas concerning the relationship between man and nature within the context of American culture are briefly recalled (Columbus, Smith). Then, the transcendentalist view upon this relationship, put forward by Emerson and exemplified by Thoreau, is restated – to be shown as fundamentally questioned from the perspective of existential alienation or cognitive skepticism, first by Poe and later, by Dickinson and Crane. Consequently, the Beat literature is presented both as an attempt at the restoring of the transcendentalist concept of divine harmony between man and nature and as an example of the writers being alienated in the “disenchanted world” of the mid-20th century America – the attempt ultimately unsuccessful, as was proved e. g. by Kerouac's Big Sur. A similar idea of America as never-to-beregained “paradise” of natural beauty and harmony is featured in the artistic legacy of the Hippie Generation, from Easy Rider film, to Steppenwolf's song Monster or Brautigan's novels such as Trout Fishing in America. Finally, a parallel is drawn between Kerouac and his Polish follower, Edward Stachura, chronologically belonging to the Hippie era and showing in his fiction hypersensitive individuals, tragically alienated both from nature and humanity – which, despite any notes of existential pessimism, was not the case with the Beats.

In 1974, Ignácio de Loyola Brandão released to the public his novel Zero in Italy, translated by Antonio Tabucchi. When published in 1976 in Brazil, the novel was submitted to censorship. Zero, a kaleidoscopic picture of the city of São Paulo in the sixties of the twentieth century is inspired by the big urban novels, experimental writing techniques and narrative collages, and develops a particular narrative. The novel reflects a social climate of violence. This article’s purpose is to analize Brandão’s literary proceeding. In his short stories, published shortly after Zero as well as in his book of memories of Berlin, he becomes quite sofisticated in his writing strategy. The novel O verde violentou o muro was started in Germany and concluded in Brazil, and speaks about a city of Berlin living still the tens climate of the Cold War.

The author of this paper analyses the “scandal” of the novel Aparição, which was flagrant at the end of the 50s of the 20th century but only ten years later, in 1969, its “irreligiosity” was regarded as inoffensive. The metaphysical dilemma of the novel, which aims to put the man in God’s position, became, with the passage of time, something rather obvious. On the other hand, the post‑1968 generation does not understand and accept the existentialist ethics of the “noble infelicity” for the sake of the humanist principles. Curiously enough, the fervor of the hero’s engagement in preaching the necessity of atheism at the end of the book could be considered nowadays as an act of violence. Nevertheless, Vergílio Ferreira’s novel has not lost its great literary value.
