«После смерти...» А.П. Ладинского

«После смерти...» А.П. Ладинского

Author(s): Anastasija Gorobec / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1/2012

Goethe und seine Zeitgenossen in Böhmen

Goethe und seine Zeitgenossen in Böhmen

Author(s): Uwe Hentschel / Language(s): German Issue: 01+02/2016

Konstrukce identity v kultuře a proti ní: autobiografie Janet Frameové

Konstrukce identity v kultuře a proti ní: autobiografie Janet Frameové

Author(s): Zuzana Fonioková / Language(s): Czech Issue: 1/2018

The paper examines a three-volume autobiography (To the Is-Land, An Angel at My Table, and The Envoy from Mirror City) by Janet Frame, focusing on its portrayal of the self-construction of the protagonist. Using a narrative psychological conception of the self (esp. by Dan McAdams) and constructivist theories of autobiographical practices (e.g. Bruner, Eakin), the paper demonstrates the ways in which the depicted search for personal identity in autobiography by Frame interplays with the narrative strategies of the text, and relates this identity search to the cultural determination of self-construction and models of identity available in the given society.

Socialistický realismus jako uzavřený vesmír znaků

Socialistický realismus jako uzavřený vesmír znaků

Author(s): Petr Andreas / Language(s): Czech Issue: 2/2020

The reviewed work titled "The country of lyres and steel: Subjects, ideologies, models, myths and rituals in the culture of Czech Stalinism" (Prague: Academia, 2018) is an attempt to grasp official art production during the period of Stalinism (1948–1954) in Czechoslovakia from a new angle, that of literary history. Firstly, the author strives to properly capture and deal with the project of socialist realism and rehabilitate it as a distinctive art phenomenon, explicitly in opposition to simplifying sociological approaches. Secondly, he undertakes a semiotic analysis of specific works, emphasizing ideological meanings which form their poetics and world of fiction. In doing so, he draws inspiration mainly from approaches of Katerina Clark and Russian studies in the West in general. The reviewer analyzes in detail the author’s theoretical frameworks, terminological instruments and ideas that the later has formulated, and points at limitations resulting from the selected angle of view and at the bias in the argumentation against the “traditional” criticism of socialist realism as a product of power pressure. The reviewer admits that the monograph is a pioneer in the Czech context due to its captivation by the topic it deals with and in its commitment to historicize it. Insofar as its reception of the Russian studies in the West are concerned, it brings a number of impulses and shows the way to domestic research. Its core consists in meticulous interpretations of specific authors and works, which are authentic, sovereign and successful. On the other hand, the author’s suggestive rhetoric and obsession with general concepts prevail over interpretation logic and contribution to knowledge; in general, the attempt to grasp socialist realism from a new angle as an art and cultural phenomenon failed, as the method focusing solely on an analysis of text does not permit capturing its historical aspect.

Reflexe antisemitismu v meziválečných prózách Egona Hostovského

Reflexe antisemitismu v meziválečných prózách Egona Hostovského

Author(s): Milan Hanyš / Language(s): Czech Issue: 5/2020

This study analyses images of antisemitism in the interwar prose works Ghetto v nich (The Ghetto in Them, 1928), Případ profesora Körnera (The Case of Professor Körner, 1932) and Dům bez pána (House Without a Master, 1937), focusing on Hostovský’s representation of antisemitism at various levels (social, cultural and psychological), which is present to various degrees of explicitness in his works. It is generally the case in these prose works that Hostovský’s characters recognize and live out their Jewish identity whenever they experience exclusion and face hatred. Racial stereotypes and antisemitic prejudices go through the minds of non-Jews and Jews alike, and have a fundamental importance in the creation of the contradictory identity and selfunderstanding of Hostovský’s characters. The novels Případ profesora Körnera and Dům bez pána in particular show that the affirmation of Jewish tradition and identity may in certain situations be an indication of escape from responsibility and the dilemmas of human existence. In these prose works, assimilation, a return to the traditions of the ancestors or an attempt at individual emancipation are not adequate responses to antisemitism and the problems of life in a modern society. The only possible solution proves to be mutual solidarity among people who overcome their socially and culturally determined status by combining their strengths and strenuously endeavouring to achieve mutual comprehension.

Příbuzenství v pohybu

Příbuzenství v pohybu

Author(s): Marcin Filipowicz / Language(s): Czech Issue: 5/2020

This study aims to analyse the representation of adoption in the novels of contemporary Czech prose writers Tereza Boučková (Rok kohouta, Year of the Rooster, 2007), Viktorie Hanišová (Anežka, 2015) and Dita Táborská (Malinka, 2017) within the context of cultural changes in the perception of kinship. The texts under review are examined from the standpoint of literary anthropology, taking special account of the category of literary representation. This study also reflects the pragmatics of literature, endeavouring to consider any influence of the literary representation of adoption on the creation of a society-wide normative climate for the various forms of socialbehavioural kinship. The basis for this is the finding that Czech literary prose over the last two decades has often sought answers to the issues surrounding the dynamic transformation of kinship and family structures. The old hegemonic model of the heterosexual couple bringing up their biological offspring has been “forced” to give up some of its social and cultural space to newly arising forms of family coexistence. One of the poles of conflict between the high visibility of biologically reproduced kinship and social-behavioural kinship is currently that of adoption. This study attempts to answer the questions over why these prose writers generally paint a negative picture of adoption, and why this subject has for so long been a blank space in Czech literary prose, and not least, whether in this case literature is just another medium that reinforces prejudices against adoption, playing a role in the social stigmatization both of adopted children and adoptive parents.

Čtenářská kultura

Čtenářská kultura

Author(s): Jiří Trávníček,Grzegorz Nieć / Language(s): Czech Issue: 5/2020

This study focuses on the concept of reading culture. The authors attempt to define its content and scope, while setting it within the context of contemporary issues (such as the digital revolution). They also take account of the key fixed ideas associated with the “reader” and “reading” concepts, while paying specific attention to the opposition of the empirical reader and model reader. They also base their conception of reading culture on a critical comparison with such associated concepts as book culture, written culture, literary culture and media culture, while focusing on the concept of culture itself, particularly on why they have decided on it, as culture might even be considered — in the sense of British cultural studies — to be anything that is communicated (read), and not just produced (written). Hence culture involves the circulation, range, extent and the entire ecosystem of relations and their media. It is the sphere of meaning that is received and not just emitted. One of the features of reading culture — according to the authors — involves the not entirely straightforward search for trace /testimonies, so the authors present a table showing individual trace /testimonies classified from direct empirical proofs to quite indirect ones. The main advantage of the reading culture concept is considered by the authors to be that it integrates all the activities associated with reception (direct and mediated, clear and disputed, complete and partial), so that it presents the entire range of personal testimonies, statistical data, institutions such as school and censorship, the book market and public libraries, discourse on reading, reader iconography and so forth.

Verš raného Karla Tomana

Verš raného Karla Tomana

Author(s): Robert Kolár / Language(s): Czech Issue: 1/2021

Following on from work by Miloš Sedmidubský, this study deals with syllabic irregularity (heterogeneity) in Toman’s (and Vrchlický’s) verse. It focuses on Toman’s early work, analysing individual poems and collections (particularly Pohádky krve, Tales of Blood, 1898 and Torzo života, Torso of Life, 1902). The material base is made up of 350 poems, and the differences between individual sets are checked by means of statistical tests. Syllabic irregularity is expressed in terms of entropy.

Author(s): Bara NDiaye,Iwona Anna NDiaye / Language(s): Polish Issue: XXIV/2022

The main goal of the undertaken research was to present how texts devoted to literary events function in contemporary media discourse. The article analyzes the reaction of the French-speaking media to the literary event of the Francophone world – presenting a Senegalese writer with the most prestigious literary award in France. The authors review the major media publishing in French in which the figure of the laureate Mohamed Mbougar Sarr was celebrated, the content of the awarded novel as well as the opinions of critics and journalists. The online versions of, among others, Le Monde, Le Courrier International, Le Soleil, LaPresse.ca, Le Soir, L’Observateur Paalga and audiovisual media such as RFI, TV5 Monde, France 24, TSR were analyzed. Différentes sources d’inspiration dans l’œuvre romanesque d’Ananda Devi

Différentes sources d’inspiration dans l’œuvre romanesque d’Ananda Devi

Author(s): Anna Szkonter-Bochniak / Language(s): French Issue: 21/2022

In the article the author analyses various sources of inspiration noticeable in the works of Ananda Devi. Considering the writer’s background, her native island of Mauritius, a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multi-cultural island, various cultural inspirations are noticeable in her works. The author of this article focuses on the novelist’s prose and analyses the cultural references rooted in Indian, European, African and Creole cultures. The aim of this analysis is also to describe the intertextual relations that exist between some of Ananda Devi’s texts and the works of Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Arthur Rimbaud or Malcolm de Chazal, T. S. Eliot, Toni Morrison and J. M. Coetzee. In the analysis, the author draws on the research of Homi Bhabha and Gérard Genette.

La traversée du Kala pani chez Ananda Devi : entre espace-temps tragique et renaissance symbolique

La traversée du Kala pani chez Ananda Devi : entre espace-temps tragique et renaissance symbolique

Author(s): Aïssatou Moukara / Language(s): French Issue: 21/2022

References to the notion of karma abound in the works of Ananda Devi, a major female figure in the literary Francophonie of the Indian Ocean. These references evoke a tragic fate in connection with the idea of exile for the Indian community installed in Mauritius through the crossing of the Great Ocean. However, this crossing of “dark waters” (Kala pani) is a taboo, a curse in Hinduism. Installed in the island area of Mauritius, the Indo-descendants presented by Devi’s works experience a sort of eternal return from this original curse, the community feeling chastened by a feeling of uprooting, which constantly recalls the indestructible link with the mother country the ancestral culture. Based on two novels from the so-called Hindu cycle of Ananda Devi, and drawing on the work of Mircea Eliade (2009) on mythical symbols and structures, this study aims at showing that death is a figure of reincarnation in a new life. The analysis thus leads to understand that the Kala pani is a tragic space-time, at the same time, that it is a space-time of purifying immersion and of symbolic rebirth in the imaginary of the exiles that the novelist stages.
