SOME METHODOLOGICAL REMARKS ON THE REPLICATION METHOD

SOME METHODOLOGICAL REMARKS ON THE REPLICATION METHOD

Author(s): Peter Heering / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

In the last decades, historians of science have developed a substantial interest in experiments and their role in creating scientific knowledge. Among the relevant aspects that came into the focus of the analysis were skills andperformative aspects involved in scientific experimentation. This led to some methodological problems, as the respective traces are difficult to find in classical sources. One methodological approach that addresses these aspects is the replication method, which is not limited to redoing historical experiments, but also includes the reconstruction of the historical apparatus as well as the contextualisation of the experiences made during this process.

THE EARTH FLOATS UNSUPPORTED IN SPACE

THE EARTH FLOATS UNSUPPORTED IN SPACE

Author(s): Radim Kočandrle / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

According to Aristotle, Anaximander of Miletus explained the motionless position of the Earth in the universe by appealing to the principle of equilibrium. This study shows that such a conception would have represented a radical departure from the Ionian tradition, which tended to stress the role of air in supporting the Earth. Moreover, given the cosmological role of air, it is possible that this element played the same role also in Anaximander’s thought. Aristotle’s argument is in fact most likely based on Anaximander’s notion of concentric circles of heavenly bodies around the Earth.

THE STRUCTURES OF SPACETIME GEOMETRY

THE STRUCTURES OF SPACETIME GEOMETRY

Author(s): Mauro Francaviglia,Lorenzo Fatibene / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

We shall here review some of the insights about the structures of geometry of spacetime implied by gravitational physics. In the early 70s Jürgen Ehlers (1929–2008), Felix A. E. Pirani and Alfred Schild (1921–1977) proposed an interpretational framework for relativistic theories, which suggests to revise thestructure of gravitational theories. We shall review a proposal for classifying extended theories of gravitation and consider some examples and applications.

THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE AND SCIENCE EDUCATION: A PLANETARIUM AT SCHOOL

THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE AND SCIENCE EDUCATION: A PLANETARIUM AT SCHOOL

Author(s): Enzo Bonacci / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

The Livio Gratton is a small size Planetarium (40–seat capacity) located in Latina (near Roma, Italy); it belongs to the Scientific High School G.B. Grassi since its construction in 2003. In less than eighteen months of activity the number of admissions has been superior to 4000, but the situation was rather different previously, when the almost absolute lack of information about the structure and the few visitors induced the headmaster to accomplish a managing, cultural, educational and scientific valorization policy. Such galvanizing experience is worthy to be described from the discouraging premises till the positive response from audience and critics.

NOTES ON HISTORIOGRAPHY OF ENGINEERING IN ITALY DURING THE 20TH CENTURY

NOTES ON HISTORIOGRAPHY OF ENGINEERING IN ITALY DURING THE 20TH CENTURY

Author(s): Salvatore D’Agostino / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

The great world of Engineering has outbursted in its all different aspects, from university education to technological and industrial development, both civil and mechanical engineering, as well as electrical and chemical, aerospace and computer science. Due to major concentration on research and innovation, projection toward an inexhaustible technological development affecting relevant and everlasting changing of everyday life, history has been neglected. These continuous changings lead to an overgrowing disorientation and suspicion among people since technical and scientific culture is unprepared to face political and social demand of an historical period in which regressive tendencies against scientific progress arise.

THE VARIABLE RADIUS CARTOGRAPHY: THE NEW EXPERIMENTAL DISCIPLINE

Author(s): Giancarlo Scalera / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

It is an aim of the present extended abstract to show that in the last century cartography was used in a way more or less complex, more or less intertwined with other disciplines and databases, not as pure representation or in the spirit of the simple fits that supported continental displacements, but as experiments of greater significance with a value of proof in favour of the planet expansion, and providing suggestions to Physics, Astronomy and Cosmology about probable incompleteness of their current conceptions.

Developing Intercultural Communication Skills. The Case of Teaching English as a First and Second Foreign Language to Students of European Studies at Sofia University ‘St. Kliment Ohridski’

Author(s): Nikolina Tsvetkova,Desislava Karaasenova / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

The paper discusses the place of intercultural education in the European Studies curriculum. The authors view it both from the perspective of the intensive language education BA students of European Studies undergo since their first year at university and the practical needs of modern-day communication in the context of globalisation. Based on their experience in the PICT project (Promoting Intercultural Competence in Translators)1 and reflecting on it in view of the realities of teaching English as a first and second foreign language to BA students, they argue the need to approach the issue of developing students’ intercultural competence systematically.

EU Media Policies in the Context of Cultural Identity

EU Media Policies in the Context of Cultural Identity

Author(s): Jasna Bacovska Nedikj,Ljubinka Andonovska / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

The communications sector in general and, in particular, the media within the EU are receiving at least a bivalent treatment. On one hand, they inevitably represent cultural identity, and on the other hand, they must be considered a product of the European market. Community policies in this regard are a result of difficult compromises by power players on international, inter- and intra-institutional levels. Consequently, there is a lack of coherency in the approach and activities, even within the same institution. Namely, six different directorates of the European Commission hold some authority on different aspects of communication, even though media policy is most often initiated not by the Commission or the Council, but by the European Parliament, with the aim of advancing European integration. Significant inconsistencies appear in implementing strategies for dealing with new media channels, as well. The institution that played a crucial role in the not so intensive development of the European community’s media policy, especially with regards to broadcasting, borderless television and other audiovisual issues, is the European Court of Justice, through several extremely important rulings. However, the activities of the European Commission were crucial for the swift progress of the plan for liberalization of telecommunications and, particularly, recognizing the early benefits of information society. Evidently, the numerous debates on the information society within the EU are initiated, or, at least, strongly influenced by the expert public. Finally, the influence of some national and international organizations, including the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations, the European Multimedia Forum, the European Telecommunication Standards Institute, the European Broadcasting Union, etc., should not be underplayed. There are serious arguments proving that these organizations are an extremely efficient framework for cooperation and coordination with an inevitable influence on European policy in the media sphere.

Let’s Talk About Europe! EU Topics in Continuous Teacher Education

Let’s Talk About Europe! EU Topics in Continuous Teacher Education

Author(s): Nikolina Tsvetkova / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

Being a member of the academic staff of the EU Studies Department at Sofia University (Faculty of Philosophy) the author of this paper has the privilege to work with highly motivated, hard-working, open-minded students whose curiosity makes them look incessantly for the answers to a number of important questions regarding the past, the present and the future of the European Union and of our country as part of it. It is undoubted that their untiring inquisitive approach, probing questions, unexpected suggestions and opinions are related not only to the inspiring learning environment they are faced with at the university but also have their roots back in their school life when they were taught, motivated and driven forward by equally inspiring teachers of different subjects. It is exactly this relationship between secondary and tertiary education with an emphasis on developing its “European” strand that is going to be in the focus of our attention.

Work-Family Conflict in Light of the EU 2020

Work-Family Conflict in Light of the EU 2020

Author(s): Livia Pogan / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

In this paper we aim to analyse the impact of the work-¬family conflict on achieving the goals of EU 2020 Strategy. Whatever the historical period or geographic area, adults’ activity is mainly dedicated to profession and family, domains that increasingly frequently are in conflict, as a result of the actual demographic context (changes of family structures, increased professional requests, new technologies that replace human resources or migration, for example). Numerous studies show remarkable differences among member states in terms of professional activity ¬ working hours, the work done, earnings, working conditions, women involvement in labor. All these facts led the Council of Europe to recommend member states ‘to take appropriate measures to promote a better balance between work and private life for women and men’ (The European Pact for equality between women and men 2011¬ 2020). These recommendations are made in light of the guidelines set by the EU 2020 Strategy, which considers inclusive growth, increased participation in the labor market, acquiring new skills and poverty alleviation as essential pillars to develop a United Europe. Given these considerations, we focused attention on the relationship between work-family conflict and the desires of EU 2020.

The Greek Crisis, the Media and the Transformation of the European Public Sphere

The Greek Crisis, the Media and the Transformation of the European Public Sphere

Author(s): George Pleios,Dimitrios Souliotis / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

In media terms, the Greek economic crisis is an ‘event’ whose coverage combines elements of the media coverage of both the European Union and the economy. Academic research concerning media coverage of the economy shows that media tends to follow negative events more closely than positive ones. Thus, crisis which is a major negative change is expected to be covered in the media more intensely, in more details and with a high degree of priming. Factors that have the potential to affect the media coverage of the economy (including crisis) are the type of the media (e.g. quality vs tabloid press), the ownership and the political orientation of the media, the sources of information, etc. However, one really important factor is the type of political - media system.
