Parametric Investigation of Optical Pulses in Nonlinear Isotropic Media

Author(s): Anelia Dakova,L. Kovachev,D. Dakova,V. Slavchev / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2018

In present work the parametric interaction of two optical waves presented by their slowly varying amplitude functions A1(z) and A2(z) in isotropic nonlinear medium is investigated. The corresponding system of nonlinear amplitude differential equations describes the processes of third-harmonic generation and THz generation in femtosecond region. It is found analytical solution of this system, characterizing the periodic exchange of energy between the two waves. The obtained result can be used for investigating different parametric processes in nonlinear dielectric medium, depending on the value of the wavenumber mismatch Dk. These effects are directly related to modern communication systems and optical sensors.

The healing power of many plants has been known since ancient times and it is used until nowadays all over the world. The herbs Calendula officinalis L. and Matricaria chamomilla L. are among the most commonly used herbs. The article mentions the biologically active substances and their usage in folk medicine. The content of the radionuclides in both plants and the soil, near the root system of the samples collected in June and July 2016 from the region of Yagnillo village, Varna district, has been investigated. Flowers and soil are cleaned from impurities, dried and levigated in fine powder. Gamma-spectrometric analysis was performed on the prepared samples. A low-frequency gamma-spectrometer set up by a Ge (Li) detector with multilayer protection is used. The collection of gamma-spectra was done for 86,400 s. A specialized software for gamma-spectra – ANGES – was used for their processing. The activities and specific activities of the detected natural radionuclides from the Uranium-radionuclide and Toric families are calculated. The transfer from soil to plant has been calculated. A comparative analysis of the radionuclides content in the plants and the soils on which they were grown has been made. The comparison shows qualitative and quantitative compatibility with the radionuclides found.

The Effect of Extra Virgin Olive Oil on the Human Body and Quality Control by Using Optical Methods

Author(s): Krastena Nikolova,Carsten Tottmann,Valentin Hedderich,Poli Radusheva / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2018

There are many substances in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), of which many have a beneficial effect. One of the most interesting substances in EVOO is Oleocanthal. This substance is first recognised in 2005 and can only be found in EVOO. Under further investigations it was proven that in vitro Oleocanthal has an anti-inflammatory effect comparable to Ibuprofen. This is due to the fact that it is an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase. It is able to form prostanoids, including thromboxane, which takes part in formation of thrombosis, and prostaglandins including prostacyclin, which prevent the formation of the platelet plug during blood clotting and acts as a vasodilator. The quality control of an EVOO is very important, because most often refined oils such as olive-pomace oil, seed oils or synthetic oils are used. In some cases, this may lead to serious health problems after consumption. Such an incident happened 1981 in Spain (Spanish toxic Oil syndrome) where 20000 people were affected from which 330 died from aniline intoxication. Optical techniques are ideal for this purpose because they are simple, cost-effective, rapid and non-destructive. Fluorescence spectroscopy has different applications: detection of adulteration, geographic region, quantification of fluorescent components, monitoring of photo-oxidation and thermal and assessment of quality changes of olive oil during storage.

Инфрачервена термография за диагностика на фокална инфекция

Author(s): Raia Grozdanova-Uzunova,Pepa Uzunova,Todor Uzunov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2018

Focal infection is a present hidden infection inside the body that is not strong enough to cause symptoms and most often patients don’t know about its presence. By the physiological paths the organism can suppress it, but when a decrease in the immune protection occurs (virus, stress, fatigue) the focus of infection overcomes local protection and affects by the connective tissue distant organs and systems (heart, kidneys, joints, eyes, skin). Focal infection can be the genuine cause for some diseases (ear infections, pyelonephritis, arthritis, alopecia areata) or aggravation factor for others. Very often even doctors consider directing patients for focal infection diagnostics, when have run out of therapeutic possibilities. That’s why focal infection is a major medical problem and both doctors and patients pay much more attention. Infrared thermography is a contemporary method for non-contact thermodiagnostics and for short time the whole body temperature can be registered as thermal pictures. This happens by infrared camera that is highly sensitive and hi-tech technology that registers the infrared spectrum radiating from the object of surveillance. After a thorough computer analysis, the different foci and their activity can be differentiated. As a contemporary method for focal diagnostics infrared thermography gives guidelines for finding focal infection in the whole body in unclarified cases. Moreover, it’s a method that distinguishes with detailed information, possibility for precise software analysis and direct digital data transfer that’s why infrared thermography has its important place in the diagnostics of focal infection.

Електрични свойства на композитни филми от полимлечна киселина

Author(s): Asya Petrova Viraneva,Ivan Bodurov,Temenuzhka Yovcheva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2018

In the present study, some electrical properties of polylactic acid (PLA) composite films with different percentages of MgO – 0 wt%, 2 wt%, 4 wt% and 8 wt% were investigated. Composite films were prepared using a Brabender Plastograph EC Plus blender under controlled electric heating for 5 minutes at 190 ° C. The films obtained were charged by the corona discharge method using a tri-electrode system for 1 minute under room conditions. Positive or negative 5kV voltage was applied to the corona electrode. 1 kV voltage of the same polarity as that of the corona electrode was applied to the grid. The surface potential of the charged samples was measured by the vibrating electrode method with compensation. The time dependencies of surface potential were investigated. The results obtained show a significant change in the electret behavior of PLA composite films after insertion of MgO particles with different concentration. Some dielectric and impedance characteristics of composite films were also studied. Dielectric permittivity was calculated. The results obtained show a change in dielectric permittivity by increasing the concentration of the inserted MgO particles in the PLA matrix.

Przystanek Woodstock XXI wieku, czyli teatralizacja społeczeństwa i zmierzch subkultur

Author(s): Mateusz Żyła / Language(s): Polish Issue: 29/2017

Przystanek Woodstock is one of the most important cultural events in Europe. The evidence for that are massive attendance and concerts of valued Polish and foreign artists who represent various music styles. The article is an attempt to define the identity of the 21st century festival community. To achieve this the author compares Przystanek Woodstock to the original Woodstock Festival and the Jarocin festivals the symbols of which are the actual slogans, subcultures and ideologies. In the case of the Przystanek Woodstock the ideological element has been replaced by the carnivalesque element and the event reminds of the Muggleton’s supermarket of styles and a fancy dress costume party. As a consequence, the community of the Przystanek Woodstock is internally dispersed what makes it difficult to find the right terminology covering such a multi-level phenomenon. In the final part of the article the author concludes that the 21st century Przystanek Woodstock may find its identity if there is, in the nearest future, integration resulting from defining an object of rebellion.

Representation of mental oddity in two novels by
Philip K. Dick

Representation of mental oddity in two novels by Philip K. Dick

Author(s): Damian Podleśny / Language(s): English Issue: 28/2017

The paper focuses on two novels featuring several examples of Dick’s characters who experience mental incapacities, breakdowns or suffer from serious mental states. In one of his novels, Martian Time-Slip (1964), the writer makes use of the possibilities of the “space-opera” setting to create a dramatic narrative featuring two people whose comprehension of the surrounding reality differs from that of the “normal” characters. The novel discusses the social incongruity of those who are considered mentally ill, and their struggle to overcome society’s conformity and ignorance, when it comes to accepting such people in society. The two focal characters are Manfred Steiner and Jack Bohlen; the former is an autistic child and the latter suffers from a latent form of schizophrenia. Both of them struggle to survive in the grim and oppressive environment of human colonies on Mars. In a much later novel, A Scanner Darkly (1977), Dick explores the process of gradual disintegration of human mind, resulting from excessive use of drugs. Bob Arctor, a local junkie, who is, in fact, an under-cover government agent, infiltrates the community of drug users. However, his cover forces him to take drugs, which leads him to serious brain damage resulting in schizophrenic fits and imminent mental disintegration.

“No amount of serotonin will bring Darcy to the door.” Understanding mental illness in contemporary autobiographical writing in English

Author(s): Katarzyna Szmigiero / Language(s): English Issue: 28/2017

Autobiographic writing about the experience of illness is becoming increasingly popular in English-language literature. Among many subjects addressed in patographies, the origin and treatment of mental disorders is a recurrent theme. Authors who have received a psychiatric diagnosis analyse the nature of their mental suffering, attributing it to biology, upbringing, traumatic life events or cultural stressors. Their opinions make an important contribution to contemporary discussions about mental health issues, gender roles and medicalisation of everyday life. The aim of this article is to present various approaches to mental illness and the brain-mind dichotomy voiced in many narratives. Although contemporary psychiatry tends to see mental disorders as brain diseases, some patients find this view reductionist as it robs them of agency. Others, on the other hand, support the biomedical model of madness and seem fascinated with neurological and biochemical explanations of their own moods and emotions. The third group comprises individuals who try to find an eclectic explanation, combining biology and socio-cultural factors.

Museum Linked Open Data: Ontologies, Datasets, Projects

Author(s): Vladimir Alexiev / Language(s): English Issue: VIII/2018

The Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums (GLAM) sector deals with complex and varied data. Integrating that data, especially across institutions, has always been a challenge. Semantic data integration is the best approach to deal with such challenges. Linked Open Data (LOD) enable large-scale Digital Hu-manities (DH) research, collaboration and aggregation, allowing DH researchers to make connections between (and make sense of) the multitude of digitized Cul-tural Heritage (CH) available on the web. An upsurge of interest in semtech and LOD has swept the CH and DH communities. An active Linked Open Data for Libraries, Archives and Museums (LODLAM) community exists, CH data is published as LOD, and international collaborations have emerged. The value of LOD is especially high in the GLAM sector, since culture by its very nature is cross-border and interlinked. We present interesting LODLAM projects, datasets, and ontologies, as well as Ontotext's experience in this domain. An extended version of this paper is available. It has 77 pages, 67 figures, de-tailed info about CH content and XML standards, Wikidata and global authority control.

Being her own biographer – Su Meck’s memoir I Forgot to Remember and the fallibility of memory from the perspective of neuroscience and cognitive psychology

Being her own biographer – Su Meck’s memoir I Forgot to Remember and the fallibility of memory from the perspective of neuroscience and cognitive psychology

Author(s): Anita Jarczok / Language(s): English Issue: 28/2017

Su Meck’s memoir relates her loss of memory as a result of the brain injury that she suffered when a kitchen fan fell on her head. Meck never recovered her memories from before the incident, and for some time after it she was also unable to form any new memories. In this dramatic account of the loss of memory, Meck tries to understand her experiences and to rebuild her sense of self. I describe the dire consequences of such a total memory failure, especially to our sense of self. However, I also argue that this memoir is about the fallibility of memory in general, not only in such an extreme case as the brain injury. Trying to reconstruct her story, Meck discovers that others have either incomplete or conflicting stories to tell her. I Forgot to Remember brings the transient and biased nature of our own memories into sharp focus. However, Meck’s narrative not only exposes the limitation of our memory and highlights its importance to our sense of self but also brings to light the fluid boundaries of various life writing genres and reveals the pitfalls of placing too much emphasis on memory in relation to self.

Медийна рецепция онлайн на Доклада за състоянието на националната сигурност на България през 2016 г.

Author(s): Konstantin Pavlov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 47/2017

The paper analyzes the media and political reactions in Bulgarian online media to the Government's Annual National Security Report, subsequently approved by the Bulgarian Parliament, for the period September 2017 – November2017. References to the report were subject to content analysis according to the timeline of the reactions and the intensity of their occurence, according to the different categories of institutional and non-institutional speakers, as wellas according to the basic messages they were carrying. The findings show a strong disproportion in the representation of different opinions and the lack of public debate on the subject. Since the beginning of the period, there is a visible disparity between the reactions to the Report and their media coverage. The passages in the text of the Report that describe the role of Russia for the Bulgarian national security focus almost all of the media attention and were the most debated political issue on this topic. With a great deal of certainty it can be speculated that the next national security topic that will get great coverage will revolve around the state of security in the Black sea.
