Background: A number of authors argue that the ability of auditory processing is associated with reading, speech and phonological awareness, whereas difficulties in this capacity, in turn, lead to difficulties in language development and literacy. The aim of this study is to establish correlations between auditory processing skills and the ability to decode words, reading comprehension and related factors in children in second grade at a Bulgarian school. Methods: 56 children from second grade at a Bulgarian school are studied. Children are examined by: Test of Auditory and Visual Skills (TAVS); Test of Rapid Automatic Naming (RAN - objects and letters); Phonological Awareness - manipulation and rhyme; Decoding words and pseudo-words; Vocabulary - picture; Reading comprehension text, in order to establish dependencies and relations. Results: This study demonstrated that the auditory processing ability is most strongly correlated with phonological awareness, reading speed and decoding. Strong statistical correlation between the Auditory Temporal Order with phonological awareness and the reading speed was noted; and moderate correlation between Auditory Temporal Order and the decoding of words and pseudo-words was observed, too. Sensitivity of Auditory Fusion Threshold is significantly correlated with phonological awareness and moderately correlated with the speed of reading and reading comprehension. Auditory motor skills are moderately correlated with vocabulary and reading speed. Conclusion: In terms of future research, it is important to look for beneficial effects of musical education and training in auditory processing, which is proved to expand the language skills and improve the children’s and students’ ability to read.

Among the most alarming findings for reduced spiritual contacts in contemporary societies, including that in Bulgaria, are those for reduced readership of books. Regularly conducted sociological and statistical surveys during the last decade have revealed a relatively sustainable situation of declining or withholding the amount of readers. National statistical institutes, Eurostat, specialized sociological agencies and specialized foundations are constantly conducting surveys, resulting in more or less grim pictures of the level of reading in many European countries. However, it should not be overlooked that the statistical picture of reading is not always presentеd in the light of the digital age. The metamorphoses through which the book is passing and the transformations in reading habits that have taken place in the digital era require a special research approach attempting to outline both some of the consequences and the causes for the fundamental changes that accompany these processes. This article presents aggregated data from an "expert evaluation" survey of 14 experts participating in the COST Action IS 1404 E-READ (2014-2018) on the attitudes towards modern forms of reading and the future of the book, which has been conducted within the framework of the research project DCOST 01/13 - 04.08.2017 of the National Scientific Fund of Bulgaria. Some of the expert conclusions state that the book in its traditional form will change to a great extent, and that there will be many convergent processes between the traditional and e-formats, as well as among the other media, but as a paper product the book will not disappear, it will become the dominating possession of the intellectual elite.

In the virtual web space, the fourth dimension – time, has been replaced by digitality as its inherent root. This new „dimension“ also implies endless and perspective opportunities for all of us and for every kind of human activity – for realization and change, for being and existence and for personal future. Trends in reformatting the dominant offline relationships in the societies also lead to „demands“ in creating, searching for and following megaleaders instead of parties. The need for a new civil contract becomes more and more urgent in this connection.

Our target is to assess how the Czech and the Slovak ethnography developed in the period of the First Czechoslovak Republic (1918–1938), whether it displayed international connotations, and to what extent it responded to the common European development of this discipline. Research contacts between Slavic ethnographers and geographers influenced one of the ethnographic research lines in Czechoslovakia, and the evidence for this are the application of Jovan Cvijić’s Anthropogeographic School and the application of cultural and geographical research line in interwar Czechoslovakia’s science. Between the world wars, Czechoslovak ethnographers paid attention to Slovakia and to Carpathian Ruthenia, where forms of traditional folk culture still actively lived on. Ethnography in the interwar Czechoslovakia can be considered to be an important part of evolving European ethnology. Unfortunately, this advancement was interrupted by political development after World War II.

The paper is based on discourse analysis and secondary data analysis conducted in the collective research “Educational Inequalities and Life Chances”. Three knots of issues are outlined in the first part of the paper, while the second represents the discursive strategies of the main actors identified against the background of the problematic knots. In the public talk about education, educational crisis and educational reform, a particular discursive line prevails: we called it project-entrepreneurial. It renders families responsible pupils’ educational achievements, constituting their identity as responsible for children’s ‘motivations’. This shared discursive reservoir however is enacted toward varying strategies by public and administrative authorities, by business structures and spokesmen, by the activist segment of the NGO sector and by its think-tank segment. Varying as they are, these strategies of enactment of the shared reservoir reinforce the effects of the dominating discourse. Students are measured and recognised according to their intellectual achievements, reduced to the educational motivations acquired within the family. This supports and legitimises a process of an early selection of children according their intellectual achievements, which in turn has the function of showing the desired families that the school selects its students, thus reproducing the cultural capital and legitimising parental hidden power.Within the competitive framework in which they are positioned, schools behave completely rationally – the successful ones get even and ever more successful, while (educationally) unsuccessful ones occupy a niche that is left unoccupied – the niche of social work and assistance. Thus the system, though producing and reproducing inequality, is preventing social exclusion.
