By providing the acquisition of knowledge and skills matching the demands of the modern times, education has a major impact on the development of economy and society in general. However, in order to have such significance, education has to constantly and consistently improve its quality. Teachers have a key role in this process and accordingly have to look after their professional development. The basic aim of this paper was to research the attitudes of teachers in the Brčko District in Bosnia and Herzegovina about lifelong education, their willingness and involvement in different types of lifelong education, and the satisfaction with their profession. The field research was conducted by surveying 101 elementary school teachers in the Brčko District in 2009. In some ways, the results of this piece of research were consistent with the results of the research conducted in developed countries, and in other ways, they were not. The results are consistent when it comes to the levels of satisfaction with working in their profession. However, there are some differences when it comes to the question of evaluating the level of one’s knowledge and educational skills, as well as the knowledge and educational skills of fellow teachers, and also when it comes to the question of participating in different types of professional development. Unlike most of the teachers surveyed in developed countries, the majority of teachers in the Brčko District are very satisfied with their knowledge and skills, with how they are equipped with the literature for both personal and professional development, and they do not identify the way the schools are equipped with literature as a problem. Even though most of the teachers are aware of the importance of lifelong education in their own professional development and the development of society in general, they rarely take part in different types of organized professional advancement opportunities and many of them do not even consider it necessary. This situation generates a number of implications and suggestions which are discussed in this paper, and which are directed towards teachers, school principals, and creators of the educational policies in general.

The entry of any company into the market always brings certain risks and unpredictable events, even if it is a well-known brand with an established reputation. The company must be able to assess entry barriers into its new market and be able to overcome them effectively. At first sight, the Slovak rail passenger transport market could seem a disadvantageous area for new entrants. Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko, with the state as 100% shareholder, had a monopoly on this market and on top of that, this company provided unpaid transport for chosen segments of passengers. Another drawback is the poor condition of the track network, which affects the speed of transportation. However, a successful company should be able to use these conditions for its own benefit and bring change and innovation to such an industry. The Czech company RegioJet inc, has decided to enter this sector and try to entice Slovak passengers with its services, which have not yet been offered by anybody else.

The article is dedicated to the analysis of Belarusian bee-keeping incantatory phrases, which have not got researchers’ attention yet. Although this group of phrases is not numerous, they make up one of the first and best known written collections of incantatory phrases in Belarus. A brief overview of the experimental data enables to conclude that this functional group has a clear pragmatic focus on bees’ protection and their profitability. On the content-motif level there is an organic intertwining of archaic views on the bee and housekeeping in general and Christian component. In the texts the author surveys Belarusians’ attitude to the bee as a God’s bug, a creative role of God and the saints, the status of an apiary as a sacred place, the image of a beekeeper as a mythological owner of bees. Numerous parallels between Belarusian, Ukrainian and Russian manuscripts suggest a wide Eastern Slavic beginnings of the manuscripts on bee-keeping.

The article is devoted to the study of the symbolic status of the sacred lakes in the traditional picture of the world of the rural population of the Belarusian-Russian (Pskov-Vitebsk) borderlands. The analysis of folklore materials shows that sacred lakes often relate to the folk motif “the temple which fell through the ground”. The lake sacralization may result from unusual (medical or hazardous) properties of its water. However, none of the holy lake of borderlands is an object of worship in sacred geography because the lakes are not included in the ritual practices of the calendar cycle. Legendary lakes perform informational function and reflect the events of mythological history within the local community.

Despite the long history of slavery in Arab and Muslim lands, little has been written about this human tragedy. To many Arabs, the issue of slavery is a source of discomfort. It is estimated that eleven million Africans have been deported from eastern Africa to serve in Arab households, harems, armies, agriculture and industry. Abolition of slavery in the Arab world was a consequence of internal political and economic forces- pressure from Western powers and the realization (in enlightened Muslim circles) that maintaining slavery would forever bar Arab nations from economic progress. Slavery was sanctioned by the Islamic law and was an integral part of the Arab society. Zanzibar was one of the main channels through which slaves from Africa were transferred to supply the markets of eastern Arabia, Iraq, Persia and even parts of India. Some slaves remained in Zanzibar (famous for its clove plantations) while others were transferred to Oman. Through Omani ports (Muscat, Batinah, Sur) many slaves were kept for domestic use if they were not resold or shipped elsewhere. African slaves assimilated into the Arab Gulf societies as they lived intimately within the tribes. Slaves played a significant role in the pearl diving industry. Owning slaves increased one’s social status. Slaves married each other and bore children who were enslaved by the same families. British policy in the Trucial states was to grant freedom papers (manumission certificates) to any slaves who presented themselves at their mission. Except in Bahrain where slavery was abolished in 1937, it continued to exist in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and Trucial coast (UAE). Slavery was abolished in Kuwait in 1949, and three years later its legal status was outlawed in Qatar; in Saudi Arabia in 1962. Slavery in the UAE as an institution it was banned in 1963. The coup de grace was administered to slavery in Arabia in 1970 when Qabus ibn Saʿíd became ruler of Oman. Thousands of former slaves are still alive. They took citizenship of the Gulf States and bear some of the most prestigious names in the country.
