Arhitecţii monumentelor în vechiul regat

Author(s): Horia Moldovan / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 12/2023

This study focuses on the early stage of formation of the legal and institutional framework, as well as on the beginnings of the registration, conservation, and restoration of historical monuments in the Old Kingdom of Romania. These topics started to be investigated in the second half of the 20th century and more recently, especially during the last two decades, the focus switched to the actors – either architects or self-taught, with or without specialized education, foreigners or locals – who, starting with the mid-19th century, gave meaning to the transition towards modernity of patrimonial practices. The current research does not aim to revise the topic, but to offer an overview, emphasising the most important contributions of those who have shaped an important chapter of modern architectural culture in Romania.

Author(s): Dumitru Augustin Dumitrescu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 12/2023

The participation in the restoration of the ruins of Trajan’s Bridge in Drobeta-Turnu Severin offered the opportunity of a thorough knowledge with multiple bearings of a monument, whose restoration involved complex works. The article is divided in three main parts. First, it reviews the historical information on the monument, its evolution, and the previous interventions on it. Second, it presents the bridge’s details of construction and technique, some of which were previously unknown and were facilitated by the direct knowledge of the monument. Finally, it offers an overview of the conservation state, degradation phenomena, and restoration works that were undertaken for the purpose of recovering the initial materials and for conserving, restoring, and highlighting the bridge’s ruins.

Intervenția de restaurare. Uși împărătești din secolele XVIII–XIX, județul Argeș

Author(s): Elena Teodora Necula / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 12/2023

The initial conservation state of the late-18th century Royal Doors was very poor when they reached the Restoration Laboratory of the Theology Department – Sacred Art Specialization of the University in Piteşti. The adhering and clogged layers of sooth diminished not only the legibility of the painting depicting the Annunciation, but also the polychromy of the bas-relief sculpture. For this type of degradation and for the purpose of identifying the execution technique, a preliminary research was needed; this stage involved multidisciplinary examinations from the part of various specialists. Cleaning tests utilizing several types of solvents and their mixing in various proportions has led to the colors’ identification: gold and silver leaves, red, and green. Following the conservation-restoration proposal by the project coordinator, the works of conservation and restoration of the two Royal Doors were undertaken. The restoration team was composed of BA and MA students from the specializations of Sacred Art and Restoration of Icons and Mural and Easel Painting, respectively, both specializations belonging to the Department of Theology, Letters, History, and Arts of the University in Piteşti.

Turnuri și castele de apă din patrimoniul României

Author(s): Raluca Zaharia / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 12/2023

This article makes a brief overview of, and invites the reader to a more thorough research of, a special type of built heritage, namely, water towers. These could have either a civil or military use, but they were all industrial buildings, regardless of the period in which they were erected. Currently, 28 water towers and castles are listed among Romania’s national historical monuments, either individually or as part of larger groups of buildings. Statistically, if one takes into account the total number of classified buildings with historical and technical value, the number of classified water towers is very low. Simultaneously, historical and technical data referring to this particular type of heritage is scarce. The presented case studies have been researched and analyzed during the 2019-2022 period.

Revolutionizing Historical Manuscript Analysis: A Deep Learning Approach with Intelligent Feature Extraction for Script Classification

Revolutionizing Historical Manuscript Analysis: A Deep Learning Approach with Intelligent Feature Extraction for Script Classification

Author(s): Merouane Boudraa,Akram Bennour,Tahar Mekhaznia,Abdulrahman Alqarafi,Rashiq Rafiq Marie,Mohammed Al-Sarem,Ayush Dogra / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

The automated classification of historical document scripts holds profound implications for historians, providing unprecedented insights into the contexts of ancient manuscripts. This study introduces a robust deep learning system integrating an intelligent feature selection method, elevating the script classification process. Our methodology, applied to the CLaMM dataset, involves preprocessing steps such as advanced denoising through non-local means and binarization using Canny edge detection. These steps, pivotal for image cleaning and segmentation, set the stage for subsequent in-depth analysis. To enhance feature detection, we employ the Harris corner detector, followed by a k-means clustering process to eliminate redundancy and outliers. This process facilitates the extraction of consistently sized patches, capturing distinctive features of various scripts in historical manuscripts. The dataset undergoes rigorous training using precise convolutional neural network (CNN) models, empowering our system to discern intricate patterns and features for informed decision-making during the classification process. Ultimately, for the definitive script classification of an entire document, we employ a majority voting mechanism on the patches. The results highlight the effectiveness of this comprehensive approach, with the system achieving an impressive accuracy rate of 89.2%. This underscores the system proficiency in accurately classifying historical document scripts, offering a reliable and efficient solution for historians and researchers. The robustness of our methodology positions it as a compelling tool for meticulous analysis of historical manuscripts, contributing significantly to the field of historical document research and preservation.

Prawna ochrona dziedzictwa naturalnego w Polsce – wyzwania i perspektywy

Prawna ochrona dziedzictwa naturalnego w Polsce – wyzwania i perspektywy

Author(s): Elżbieta Zębek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2024

The article analyzes the legal status and protection of natural heritage sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in Poland. The natural properties on the List include natural elements and cultural landscapes as objects accompanying the monuments. Legal protection of natural and landscape resources is regulated mainly in the provisions on nature protection, the protection of monuments and spatial planning and development acts. However, there is no clear distinction between the protection of natural assets under the UNESCO Convention and provisions concerning the protection of the world cultural and natural heritage in the Polish legal system, which causes many legal problems related to their protection, management and monitoring. A consequence of this situation may be the degradation of these elements, in particular unique natural habitats, where protection under criminal law is unsatisfactory. There are only two natural heritage sites in Poland – the Białowieża Primeval Forest and ancient beech forests in the Bieszczady National Park. Therefore, efforts should be made to extend this List. However, it is necessary to consider strengthening the legal protection of such objects in the Nature Conservation Act by distinguishing this form of heritage or establishing separate legal acts dedicated to these objects. Therefore, only legal protection at the national level will be most effective.

Zespół pałacowo-parkowy w Lubostroniu pomnikiem historii

Zespół pałacowo-parkowy w Lubostroniu pomnikiem historii

Author(s): Ryszard Nowicki / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2024

By the decree of the President of the Republic of Poland on November 15, 2023, the palace and park complex in Lubostron was recognized as a monument of history. The classical residence of Count Fryderyk Skórzewski, built in 1800 and inspired by Andrea Palladio’s Villa Rotonda near Vicenza, Italy, is surrounded by an English-style park and stands among the most valuable monuments in Poland. Until 1939, the property was owned by the Skórzewski family, who upheld patriotic values and national traditions during the country’s subjugation. After World War II, the palace was nationalized. Its inclusion on the list of monuments of history confirms the significant value of the palace and park complex, deeply intertwined with the history of Poland and its cultural heritage.

Jak rozumiesz i czy zgadzasz się ze stwierdzeniem, że dziedzictwo kulturowe jest naszym wspólnym dobrem?

Author(s): Mateusz Witkowski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2024

Where Have All the Ur III Seals Gone?

Where Have All the Ur III Seals Gone?

Author(s): Jacob L. Dahl / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

In this paper I analyse the late 3rd millennium and early 2nd millennium seals in two mid-size collections and reach the conclusion that exceedingly few of them date to the Ur III period (c. 2100 – 2000 BC). I include some observations on other collections. I then ask the basic question: where have all the Ur III seals gone? After briefly exploring other options, I suggest with online visual evidence, that the vast majority of the Ur III seals were re-cut in the Old Babylonian period. At the end of the paper, I suggest that the absence or presence of seals from specific periods can be used to model larger historical trends.

Relevanța rolului educatorului muzeal

Relevanța rolului educatorului muzeal

Author(s): Sorin Mihai Constantinescu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1/2024

The position of a museum educator is evolving among the team of experts that any museum recruits in order to fully utilize their potential resources. This essay underlines the fact that today’s museum educator is called not only to use his expertise in doing his multidisciplinary duties, but also to take them to the extent where the public experience unique feelings and sensations that are beneficial to the inclusion of museum culture. We intend to trace the turning points of the progress of museum education and the position of museum educator, examining the key aspects of the strategies and approaches they rely on in their work. Highlighting the benefits and new objectives of museum education, we hope to outline the various aspects of the museum educator who, based upon his robust interdisciplinary training, supplies his colleagues with a thorough example of an effective practitioner while also adding value to the museum institution in which they work. The paper examines how museum educators fulfill their role as cultural promoters and mediators, balancing social objectives, public needs, and heritage values. Furthermore, examining the expansion of the conceptual scope of museum education, the paper provides special emphasis on the influence of new technologies on museum education activities. By showing that they are able to respond to future challenges in this plan as well, we draw the conclusion that the museum educator is able to fulfill a vital task for the museum institution and, in the future, their role will gain even greater importance. Naturally, we would like to strengthen our approach with further research.
