Wiedeńskie kontakty lwowskich bibliotekarzy. Z dziejów Austriackiego Stowarzyszenia Bibliotekarzy

Author(s): Sławomir Oxenius / Language(s): Polish Issue: 20/2022

The Austrian Library Association (Österreichischer Verein für Bibliothekswesen) was one of the oldest associations of librarians in Europe, functioning in the years 1896-1919. Its goal was professional and scientific improvement as well as integration of librarians from different lands belonging to the Habsburg monarchy. The article presents the origin and activities undertaken by the Association, particularly the published periodical, which was thematically related to various aspects of working in libraries and the formation of the librarian profession. It also presented information about specific libraries (an address book of monarchy libraries was published). Lviv librarians who belonged to the Association actively participated in its operations: Rudolf Kotula published articles on, e.g., Polish libraries in Austria, especially the Library of the University of Lviv, as well as in other Polish communities. He also took part in an extraordinary congress in 1913, which revealed conflicts in the relationship between the Association’s headquarters and provincial librarians, as well as problems relating to the concept, financing and scope behind the periodical. This article uses source materials to date unknown in scientific communities.

Książki z kolekcji magnackich w Wielkim Księstwie Litewskim – interdyscyplinarne opracowanie i metodologia badań

Author(s): Iwona Pietrzkiewicz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 19/2021

Contemporary research in historical book collections has recently gathered momentum, both thanks to a greater intensification of multiangled exploration (including origin-oriented studies) and the fact of its greater accessibility through international catalogue databases. The catalogues from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which in the past have frequently fallen prey to dispersion and scattering, serve as an example of how difficult it is to organize them in a coherent manner. The article sets out to investigate the problem of ancestral book collections as an instructive example of strengthening international and interdisciplinary cooperation in this field of work. The ancestral collections belonging to the Sapieha and the Radziwiłł families serve to show the current state of research in the area, its concepts and perspectives.

Elektroniczna biurowość w urzędach gminnych z terenu objętego nadzorem archiwalnym Archiwum Narodowego w Krakowie w latach 2011-2019

Author(s): Dorota Drzewiecka / Language(s): Polish Issue: 9/2022

This paper analyzes the progress of digitalization in the offices of communes, municipalities, and inter-communal associations from the area under the archival supervision of the State Archive in Kraków. The study was mainly based on the analysis of archival audit reports and the post-audit recommendations issued, which were acquired under the Polish freedom of information act. When analyzing the collected documentation, the main objective was determining whether the audited office primarily used the EZD system or the traditional system when conducting office management activities and documenting cases. Then, all IT systems (as well as the year of their implementation) were verified. The study covered the years 2011–2019. 2011 is the year when a new regulation of prime minister entered into force, regulating the possibility of managing documents digitally for communes and inter-communal associations as well as offices operating within these entities. The studied period ends with the breakout of the CO VID - 19 pandemic.

Między administracyjną Scyllą i uczoną Charybdą. Urzędnik czy historyk - rozterki u narodzin profesjonalnej archiwistyki w Stanach Zjednoczonych

Author(s): Leszek Pudłowski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 9/2022

In the United States, two main trends in archival science can be distinguished: traditional archival activities related to administration on the one hand, and on the other, active citizens who wanted to record the development of the new country. The foundation for the official administration and institutions was laid by Charles Thomson, the secretary of the first rebel Continental Congress in 1774. He worked in the parliament and laid the groundwork for the central authorities’ archive, encompassing 518 volumes. Thus, he is rightly referred to as the “godfather” of all American archivists. At the first session of the Congress after the USA had gained independence, in September 1789, it adopted the Act to provide for the safe-keeping of the Acts, Records and Seal of the United States. However, the authorities failed to establish the National Archives throughout the whole 19th century. The second trend in the history of American archival science was shaped by history lovers, with their individual collections and ephemera. With time, those grew into full-fledged, institutional libraries or were incorporated into the fonds of other archives, libraries, or museums. The most prominent collectors included Ebenezer Hazard, Jared Sparks, and Lyman Copeland Draper. Over time, individual states also started establishing historical and archival institutions, which grew to become centers of historical information or archival offices of state governments. The National Archives were only established in 1934, and employed many historians who hoped to work on the history of the country; however, the influx of contemporary documentation meant that only after many years of tedious, bureaucratic work could they start any actual historical cooperation. Meanwhile, the dispute regarding the line between the vocations of an archivist and a historian remains unresolved until today.

Archiwalia dotyczące wielkopolskich gmin żydowskich w zbiorach Gesamtarchiv der deutschen Juden (przed 1939 r.)

Archiwalia dotyczące wielkopolskich gmin żydowskich w zbiorach Gesamtarchiv der deutschen Juden (przed 1939 r.)

Author(s): Rafał Witkowski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 9/2022

The evolution of scientific institutions in Germany in the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century brought about the establishment of a professional archive gathering previously dispersed resources on the history of Jews in the German territories. Gesamtarchiv der deutschen Juden was officially launched on October 1, 1905, and soon became the largest and the most important Jewish archive in Germany. The turbulent history of the collection during the times of the fascist regime and in the years following the Second World War caused the original collection to be scattered, while many archival materials were completely destroyed. The article presents parts of the preserved lists of archival documents regarding Jews in Greater Poland that were prepared at the moment of their incorporation into the Gesamtarchiv der deutschen Juden.

Performing an Archive: Aims, Interests, Ideologies and Expectations

Performing an Archive: Aims, Interests, Ideologies and Expectations

Author(s): Mari Sarv,Ave Goršič ,Risto Järv / Language(s): English Issue: 91/2023

Public archives are repositories of human memory and history, which collect, preserve, and provide access to the records and documents creating a bridge between the past, present, and future. Archives are dynamic structures that can be interpreted as knowledge hubs, with channels of information flowing in them, activities performed within the “black box” of the institution invisible for outsiders, and channels to disseminate information for groups that they serve. These channels develop and are designed under the impact of several factors. In this article we present six factors that have shaped the development and functioning of the Estonian Folklore Archives. We first illustrate the impact of these factors, browsing through the historical periods of Estonian folkloristics. Successively, the articles of the current volume on various aspects of tradition archives are introduced and presented within the framework of the hub conception, and the relevant impact factors are highlighted. The article demonstrates that ideological framework, public expectations, institutional status, research paradigms, individual incentives of the people in charge, and (developments in) technological equipment constantly shape the content and operation of tradition archives in various time periods and circumstances.

Opening Archives to Society: The Experience from the Folklore Archive at Rovira i Virgili University

Opening Archives to Society: The Experience from the Folklore Archive at Rovira i Virgili University

Author(s): Carme Oriol,Emili Samper / Language(s): English Issue: 91/2023

The Folklore Archive at the Rovira i Virgili University (URV) is a university archive. The materials it stores are products of the fieldwork conducted by students on the Catalan Studies programme and the work done by professors researching into folk literature. From the year of its creation to the present, the Archive has adapted to the needs of the society of which it is a part. The present article discusses two issues. First, it explains how the results from our university research are transferred from the Archive to society (web, specialized digital resources, social networks, etc.). And second, it describes a specific activity entitled La ciutat a cau d’orella (The whispering city), which focuses on legends and involves several entities in Tarragona (city hall, public library, schools, youth organizations, writing workshops, etc.). This activity can be regarded as a way of developing mutual relations between the academic world and the general public.

ТРАДИЦІЙНІ ТА СУЧАСНІ БІБЛІОТЕЧНІ СЕРВІСИ: ТРАНСФОРМАЦІЙНІ ПЕРЕТВОРЕННЯ

Author(s): Andrii Yudov / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 3/2023

The purpose of the article is to identify the trends of transformations of traditional library services into modern ones through the prism of library traditions and librarians' skills; compare traditional and modern library services. The research methodology consists of the use of general scientific methods: analysis, synthesis, comparison, which made it possible to trace the development and transformations of traditional library services into modern ones. Scientific novelty of the work. It was determined that the digital library concept revolutionised the library sector through the use of information and communication technologies. The need for understanding the features of transformational changes of traditional and modern library services in order to improve library services is proved. Conclusions. Transformations of traditional library services into modern ones are shown. Digital libraries use technology and networks to connect people with resources in order to provide universal access to them. When comparing traditional and modern library services, important points were highlighted that are crucial for the creation of a modern library. First, librarians must change to meet today's challenges. The future will require them to re-orient, think creatively, and master new technological skills to create information resources and services. Librarians must be aware of modern trends and adapt to social and technological changes, as they are the only professionals suitable for scholars and citizens to appropriately evaluate online resources and provide accurate information. Second, the improvement of traditional library services is necessary, and the introduction of new methods and equipment becomes vital to bridge the gap between traditional and modern library services through integrated library management software. Information technology is essential for the rapid growth of modern library services, as the Internet and related technologies have opened up an entirely new environment for providing improved information resources and services to users.
