Author(s): Aleksandr Evgenievich Levintov / Language(s): Russian Issue: 3/2013

Na styku epok. Porównanie warsztatu twórczego Josepha Riepla i Marcina Józefa Żebrowskiego na przykładzie utworów pro processione

Author(s): Wojciech Karasiński / Language(s): Polish Issue: 02 (29)/2016

In this paper, the author compares aesthetic and stylistic attitude of two composers who worked in Jasna Góra Monastery at the turn of Baroque and Classical eras. The aim of this article is to capture the differences and similarities between the creative output of both artists by comparison of their pro processione pieces, which are a local variant of a church symphony. Collating complexive analysis, the author points characteristic solutions implemented by the composers, which gives rise to denotation their output as baroque or classical. In this way both composers were located on a stylistic timeline – Riepel as a baroque composer who already has implemented some classical elements into his style, and Żebrowski as a representant of galant style with baroque remainders. Outline of the compositional technique was depicted, what in the future can be a starting point for the further researches.

Author(s): O.E. Afanasyev,A.E. Trotsenko / Language(s): Russian Issue: 3/2013

Author(s): S.N. Tretyakov / Language(s): Russian Issue: 3/2013

Berlin, the City of Saturated Walls

Berlin, the City of Saturated Walls

Author(s): Natalia Samutina,Oksana Zaporozhets / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2015

“Saturation” is the term suggested by the authors to describe the present state of the visual environment of Berlin, the city that acquired a reputation as the European capital of street art. Saturation is a consequence of the gradual infiltration of graffiti and street art into everyday life and the visual environment of Berlin, and their acceptance by city residents. Berliners’ fondness for street imagery is enhanced by the experience and memory of the independent reappropriation and rearrangement of urban space the city underwent after unification. The memory of the Berlin Wall plays a significant role in sustaining Berlin graffiti and street art cultures. It makes evident the history of the images and their creators and their role in urban communication. Simultaneously it normalizes the ephemerality of street imagery. Visual saturation in Berlin is complemented by the activities of “mediators,” who draw various audiences’ attention to graffiti and street art and encourage the interaction of all interested parties.

A Tale of Two Ahmadiyya Mosques: Religion, Ethnic Politics, and Urban Planning in London

A Tale of Two Ahmadiyya Mosques: Religion, Ethnic Politics, and Urban Planning in London

Author(s): Marzia Balzani / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2015

Built on the site of a disused dairy in London, the Ahmadiyya Baitul Futuh Mosque is simultaneously a regenerated postindustrial site, a signal achievement for the community that built it, an affront to local Sunni Muslims, a focus for Islamophobic protest, and a boost to local regeneration plans and tourism. Using town planning documents, media articles, and ethnographic fieldwork, this article considers the conflicting discourses available to locals, Muslim and non-Muslim, centered on the new Baitul Futuh Mosque and an older, smaller, suburban Ahmadiyya mosque located nearby. These discourses are situated in the broader transnational context of sectarian violence and creation of community where ethnicity, faith, and immigration status mark those who attend the mosques. The article considers the different historical periods in which the two mosques were built, the class composition of residents in the neighborhoods of the mosques, and the consequences these have for how the mosques are incorporated into the locality. The strategies diverse local groups use to define the space in different and conflicting terms, and their cross-cutting claims, are discussed to present a range of religious, political, and ethnic positions shaping ideals of self-realization and aspirations for the future at individual and community levels.

Author(s): Polina Vrublevskaya / Language(s): Russian Issue: 3/2015

This article is devoted to the everyday life of an Orthodox parish in a small town in Russia. Starting with a critical analysis of existing approaches to measuring religiosity, the author tries to find ”communal” dimensions of religiosity, which typify Orthodox Christianity in today’s Russia. The text traces the history of the local churchsince its restoration and analyzes a variety of interactions and the development ofrelations among Orthodox parishioners, as well as their relations with the priests. Drawing on ethnographic data and interviews, the author identifies indicators suitable for analyzing parish life and what it means to belong to the parish community. The conclusion is that the parish community is formed of extensive and continuous interactions among parishioners that are not limited to religious practices yet still initiated by clergy. It is suggested that the figure of the priest should take a central place when studying Orthodox parish communities. The article also describes how to incorporate these aspects into further investigations of Orthodox Christianity.

The Soul of Stone: Mineral Symbolism in Vepsian Villages of Karelia

The Soul of Stone: Mineral Symbolism in Vepsian Villages of Karelia

Author(s): Anna Varfolomeeva / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2016

This article is a case study of the northern Vepses, an indigenous group residing in the Republic of Karelia, and their relations with mining industry. As early as the eighteenth century, Vepses in Karelia were involved in the extraction of rare decorative minerals (gabbro-diabase and raspberry quartzite), and this involvement continues today. The article discusses the variety of symbolic meanings stone has for contemporary residents of Vepsian villages, who see it simultaneously as a source of hardship, struggle, and pride. Local residents view nature and stoneworking as interconnected, seeing mining development in the region as a consequence of its natural richness. This case study illustrates that indigenous lifestyles, industrial development, and nature may be perceived as coexisting and interconnected elements.

Author(s): L.N. Hahovskaya / Language(s): Russian Issue: 3/2016

The purpose of the article is to analyze the gender aspect of Even and Koryak people migration from nomad locations and villages to urban localities of Magadan region. A gender shift is determined on the edge of village/district center. This shift is shown as an “urbanization ladder” that demonstrates sharp increase of density of women gender structure between nomad areas and urban locations. Also, the gender diversity in the education level between Koryak and Even people is revealed. Even women are significantly more educated than Even men; whereas there isn’t significant difference in education level between Koryak women and men. Aborigine women migration to district centers is caused by their parental responsibility (desire to live together with their children) and opportunity to receive “mother fund” reward (which could be converted into a two-room apartment cost). Women dominance in district centers is correlated with their education level advantage over men. However the educational gender gap in cities inverts in favor of men. The motivation for city or regional centers migration among women can be explained by a city lifestyle preference and advantageous interethnic marriages with non-locals.

Author(s): N. K. Radina,Natalja Viktorovna Kim,A.V. Porshnev. / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1/2016

The study presented in the article is a part of the research project “Regional identity in terms of socio economic changes (On the example of Nizhniy Novgorod region, 2002—2014 years)”. It reveals gender aspects of participants’ subjective opinions towards problems of urban development and characterizes social and psychological potential of the studied area. The study involved provincial cities residents — citizens of regional center and small towns of the Nizhniy Novgorod region. The first stage was based on a sample of 516 people (49 % women, 51 % men, 2002), the second stage — on a sample of 366 people (63 % women, 37 % men, 2014). Participants formulated their own vision of the majority opinion on the prospects of the city, expressed their individual views on urban development programs, stated areas where they were willing to show personal participation, which allowed to determine the changes in the indices of ego-activity, altruism and solidarity of citizens in the past 12 years. Based on the results of the study the article states that, presenting the position of the majority, men and women articulate gender stereotyped attitudes about city development. However, while formulating individual urban development priorities citizens are focused on egalitarian non-stereotypical choices. An analysis of attitudes towards the activity in the field of urban development shows that women are focused on humanitarian priorities, and they believe that society is becoming more focused on “male values”.

Author(s): E. A. Vasilchenko / Language(s): Russian Issue: 3-4/2015

The author described the development trend of women’s society in the Far East, in modern conditions, compared them with similar tendencies of the Soviet period. On the basis of statistical data, the author has analyzed the ratio of the number of men and women living in the Maritime region at the beginning of 2014. Comparing the corresponding figures for the Khabarovsk Territory, the author revealed the causes of imbalance of the sexes. The author touches upon fertility problems, instability of marriages, female unemployment, professional and educational activity of women, as well as residents of the Far East wages. On the example of Khabarovsk Krai the author describes the work of women’s organizations in support of the government policy to increase the authority of the family and the status of women, the strengthening of family values. The author revealed the aims and objectives of many women’s organizations. The article analyzes the technology of women’s organizations activities: the exchange of experience at the level of the Association of Cities of Siberia and the Far East; a partnership of local governments and women’s organizations; successful attempts to attract men to the challenges faced by women’s organizations. The author is concerned about the negative trend which is gaining strength in the Far East — the outflow of the population into the western regions of the country. In his opinion, a significant role in this process is played by women; so the author calls for women’s organizations to move from words to action on the difficult way of imbuing the minds and hearts with patriotism.

Author(s): K.I. Samokhina / Language(s): Russian Issue: 2/2016

One of the most actual problems in modern society is social orphanhood. This research refers to studies of the abandonments and neglect of children in Russia. In Russia the quantity of the newborn abandonment grows every year and makes 0,3—0,4 % of all newborn. The purpose of the article is to consider the main aspects of research made in this field and to define the spheres for the further investigation. The general purpose of the project is to give an explanation of theoretical and methodological aspects of the problem. Although the question of abandonment and neglect of children attracted attention of scholars concentrating on sociological, historical, medical aspects of the problem, one cannot but admit that there remain certain aspects to be studied. Beyond the attention of scientists there are such spheres as the structure and motives of Russian mothers in crisis, their image in mass media, modern features of the abandonments and neglect of children in Russia. Further research in this area will show other important aspects of social and culture factors of families in crisis. The analysis of all these factors and reasons will help to develop an implementation of the infant abandonments’ prevention service. In future appropriate technique will be more widely used in social services for families in crisis and children at risk of being abandoned and abused in Russian regions.

The media, i.e. ...? The notion of the media with regard to Polish territories before WWI

The media, i.e. ...? The notion of the media with regard to Polish territories before WWI

Author(s): Mirosław Filiciak / Language(s): English Issue: 01/2016

The questions under consideration concerning the expansive nature of the category of a medium (but also the analytical reasons for this consideration) depend on the reflection on local modernities, the search for the elements which may have had something in common with the processes taking place in the world centres of cultural modernisation, and the local discontinuities. I am well aware of the exaggerated claims I decided to include in this text. Perhaps such provocations may bring us closer to a better understanding of the specific natures of local modernisations, which were taking place in a different social and economic context, with limited resources in both an economic and a cultural sense (concerning the competences of the audience). e category of transmediality may be viewed in a similar way. The primary meaning of this term may be used in two ways, despite the fact that, according to both Jenkins and Freeman, it is related to the top -down planning and devising of the strategies of big businesses and countries (Freeman argues that the final phase of the development of analogue transmedia emerged from the 56 government propaganda). Firstly, transmediality may be treated as an indicator of development (here perhaps conceived of as ‘keeping up’ with the cultural centre). In this view, it will be another way of analysing culture, about which Antonina Kłoskowska wrote that ‘despite using the mass media, the culture was still not -so -mass’ (2006:418). In Poland, it was not until after WWI that it became possible to cross the second threshold of entry into mass culture i.e. not only using the mass media, but also developing sizeable institutions which could be identified with the developed industries of culture. For this reason the first transmedia attempts in Poland can be found in the late 1960s and 1970s and include such titles as Czterej pancerni i pies (Four tank -men and a dog; apart from the book and television series there were also comic strips in press, fully -Dedged comics, and even fan clubs), Stawka większa niż życie (Stakes Larger than Life; television series and comics, but also television plays), or the series of crime stories, television episodes and comics 07 zgłoś się (07 Come In).
