The article shows new factors which can have an impact on the competitiveness of export, especially in the Polish – EU trade, such as: worldwide terrorism, migration problems, Brexit, changing oil prices and non-tariff barriers. These factors are characterized by diverse features and are not easily measurable as their inherent discrepancies make it difficult to verify their impact on competitiveness. Some of them, like terrorism and immigration, have gained in significance, the importance of another one (non-tariff barriers) has also increased, whereas others (e.g. prices of oil) undergo rapid changes. However, it is necessary to take them into consideration on account of their importance to competitiveness of export.

Czy menedżerowie spółek starają się uwzględniać oczekiwania akcjonariuszy? Analiza zjawiska wygładzania dywidend na wybranych giełdowych rynkach Ameryki Łacińskiej

Author(s): Magdalena Mosionek-Schweda,Urszula Mrzygłód,Sabina Nowak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 56/2017

The main goal of the paper is to examine dividend smoothing behaviour among companies listed on the stock markets in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru in the period of 1994-2015. The research sample consisted of 227 companies and 4968 observations. On the basis of Lintner’s dividend partial adjustment model, we calculated the speed of dividend adjustment (SOA) in response to the change in earnings. We found many companies with low SOA values, which on the grounds of the classic Linter’s approach implies the existence of dividend smoothing. However, the obtained average SOA values varied in four out of five analyzed stock markets from 0.731 for Chile to 0.914 for Brazil. This means that on selected emerging stock markets of Latin America – except Peru – the dividend smoothing has not been confirmed. Moreover, the obtained SOA levels varied among the selected stock markets, which implies that the differences in the speed of dividend adjustment may be driven by either national or stock markets characteristics.

Corporate Entrepreneurship and Innovation Performance of Established Ventures: Case of Iranian Vanguard Companies

Corporate Entrepreneurship and Innovation Performance of Established Ventures: Case of Iranian Vanguard Companies

Author(s): Zahra Minafam / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2017

Corporate entrepreneurship is increasingly drawing the attention of different scholars of organizational innovation. More than three decades of studies are available in this domain; however, the relationship is rarely scrutinized. This manuscript attempts to contribute to the literature through investigating the role of corporate entrepreneurship on innovation performance of the firms. A quantitative research design is used to study the relationship between corporate entrepreneurship and innovation performance of the firms. To do so, 178 firms, in three main cities of Iran, were studied through a survey. Results show that corporate entrepreneurship affects the rates of process innovation and product innovation, as well as the technology indicators of the established firms. Some contradictory evidence is also mentioned in the findings, which are elaborated future researchers. The originality of the manuscript goes back to studying the concept in an emerging market, i.e. Iran. Also, technology indicators are rarely discussed in the literature, which are studied in this research. It is advised, based on the findings, to improve process innovation as well as product innovation, along with technology indicators through improving corporate entrepreneurial activities. The main limitation of the research was to encourage managers to complete the questionnaire. To handle this limitation, the researcher held face to face meetings, in order to increase the response rate.

Stan rzemiosła w województwach północno-wschodnich II RP w okresie międzywojennym

Author(s): Jarosław Wołkonowski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 06/2016

The aim of the research of the article is to analyze the state of craft in northeastern Poland in the interwar period. The object of the research is the creation, operation and development of crafts in the voivodeships: Białystok, Nowogródek and Wilno. The essence of the applied research method is a comparative analysis of indicators of crafts for three provinces and comparing them with national indicators. Comparative analysis shows that despite the high backwardness in the early twentieth century, the north-eastern territories of Poland in the interwar period saw the development of craft, which was an important branch of the economy of this region. The number of workshops on 1000 people and the structure of craft by professional groups were approaching to average-national values, despite a very weak supply of credit.

The Quality of Explanations for Deviation from Principles of Corporate Governance. An Introduction

The Quality of Explanations for Deviation from Principles of Corporate Governance. An Introduction

Author(s): Izabela Koładkiewicz / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2017

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to summarize studies aiming to defne matters related to the quality of explanations found in corporate governance statements published by listed companies. Another important aspect of the conducted analysis is the identifcation of various dimensions of explanation quality.Methodology: The character of the conducted research is that of an overview of literature devoted to the subject. Apart from scientifc articles, it covers European Union regulations, regulations characteristic of countries selected for the analysis (member states of the European Union), and applied solutions aimed at guaranteeing the desired quality of explanations for deviation included in corporate governance statements that are in the centre of attention.Findings: The conducted analysis organizes the current knowledge concerning actions aimed at improving the quality of explanations for deviation from principles of corporate governance. Without a doubt, the primary pillar consists of the level of information and its quality, as found in explanations for shareholders. It is this quality that determines if the shareholder understands the processes occurring in the realm of corporate governance in the company.Research limitations: The conducted analysis should be treated as an introduction to related research issues. It should be stressed that research into explanations provided by companies is still in the process of development, and the number of publications devoted to this topic is still modest.Practical implications: The study fts in the research into the phenomena of the “comply or explain” mechanism as applied in practice, which according of many researchers, continues to be poorly investigated. In terms of the directions for further research, there are promising topics including e.g. identifcation of factors that may translate into the quality of such statements (e.g. ownership structure, identity of shareholders), the role that should be played by institutions involved in developing CG codes (i.e. their successive versions), and the involvement of the board of directors/ supervisory board in the evaluation process.Originality: The present paper identifes the key factors perceived as determining the quality of corporate governance statements. In addition to that, it outlines new avenues for further investigation.

Knowledge Safety – Insights from the SME Sector

Knowledge Safety – Insights from the SME Sector

Author(s): Małgorzata Zięba / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2017

Purpose: This paper aims to explore the topic of knowledge safety, defned as the state of knowledge being safe from loss, leakage, attrition, oblivion, waste or theft. The paper frst presents a theoretical background and review of previous studies on knowledge loss and ways of overcoming it, and then illustrates the topic of knowledge safety with ten case studies from the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) sector. Methodology: The paper is based on an analysis of Knowledge Management (KM) literature devoted to knowledge loss and its potential types in companies, and on the results of case study research. Knowledge safety was frst defned and contrasted with other terms, and then examined in 10 selected SMEs. The research resulted in a clarifcation of what SMEs understand by the term of “knowledge safety” and what kind of measures they take to ensure it.Findings: As the analysis shows, the examined SMEs attribute diversifed signifcance to the issue of knowledge safety. For some of them, such problem does not exist at all and they state that they can ensure knowledge safety in all aspects of their operations. Some companies perceive it mainly through the safety of the knowledge stored in electronic databases, while others link it with the human factor only.Research limitations: Research results are limited to ten companies operating in Poland. As such, they cannot illustrate the whole picture of the existing small or medium-sized companies.Research implications: The fndings of both literature review and case study analysis indicate that there is a need to further examine the issue of knowledge safety by analysing the potential factors which may endanger knowledge safety and the methods to eliminate such risks.Practical implications: The paper examines important aspects of knowledge safety and provides guidelines on how it can be ensured by managers or owners of SMEs.Originality/value: The term of knowledge safety has been absent from the related literature so far. The paper defnes it and explores both the theoretical and the practical aspects thereof. The paper also suggests further research possibilities in this area
