Turkish Migration Policy

Author(s): / Language(s): English

"With this book, we aim to shed light on changes in migration policy, determinants beneath these changes, and practical implications for movers and non-movers in Turkey. Nevertheless, one should note that Turkey has only recently faced mass immigration and the number of foreign born has more than doubled in less than five years. Such sudden change in population composition warrants policy adjustments and reviews. Policy shift from “exporting excess labour” in the 1960s and 1970s to immigrant integration today is a drastic but necessary one. Nevertheless, Turkish migration policy is still far from settled as several chapters in this book point out. Despite the exemplary humanitarian engagement in admitting Syrians, Turkey is still at the bottom of the league table of favourable integration policies with an overall score of 25 out of 100. Turkish migration policy is likely to be adjusted further in response to the continuing immigration."CONTENT PDF Foreword - Philip L Martin Introduction - Barbara Pusch and Ibrahim Sirkeci Chapter 1: The Transformation and Europeanization of Migration Policy in Turkey: Multiculturalism, Republicanism and Alignment - Bianca Kaiser and Ayhan Kaya Chapter 2: Turkey’s migration law and policy: is it a new era? - Ali Zafer SagirogluChapter 3: Gendered citizenship: Experiences and perceptions of the Bulgarian Turkish immigrant women - Özge Kaytan Chapter 4: European Union and Turkish migration policy reform: from accession to policy conditionality - Birce DemiryontarChapter 5: The international migration and foreign policy nexus: the case of Syrian refugee crisis in Turkey - Ela Gökalp Aras and Zeynep Sahin Mencutek Chapter 6: Stuck in the Aegean: Syrians leaving Turkey face European barriers - H. POLSKA NA TLE HISTORYCZNYCH PODZIAŁÓW PRZESTRZENI EUROPEJSKIEJ ORAZ WSPÓŁCZESNYCH PRZEMIAN GOSPODARCZYCH, SPOŁECZNYCH I POLITYCZNYCH

Author(s): Janusz T. Hryniewicz / Language(s): Polish

W demonstrowanej książce Janusz Hryniewicz pogłębia i konkretyzuje analizy zawarte w swej wcześniejszej pracy Polityczny i kulturowy kontekst rozwoju gospodarczego (Wydawnictwo Naukowe Scholar, Warszawa 2004), której publikacja odbiła się znacznym echem w środowisku socjologów, ekonomistów i historyków.

The town of Kunszentmárton, the author’s birthplace, has become an organic part of the life and culture of Nagykunság (Big Cumania), Körös-völgy (Körös Valley), Tiszazug and the Southern Great Plain over the past three hundred years since its repopulation from the Jászság. Similar observations can be made about the other Jassic, Big Cumanian and Small Cumanian settlements: their day-to-day activities have been going on in a context of intricate relations. The essays selected for this volume represent, on the one hand, the extensive network of relations of the settlements and micro-regions of the Jászság and Big Cumania, while on the other, they present certain aspects of the – intersecting – everyday lives and unique local cultures of Big Cumania, Small Cumania, Tiszazug and the Körös Valley.

Dziennik sprzeciwu. Tajne zapiski obywatela III Rzeszy 1939–1942

Author(s): Friedrich Kellner / Language(s): Polish

The testimony of an ordinary German who evocatively describes the everyday life of the German provinces during World War II. The author tracks the hypocrisy of fascist propaganda and gives the lie to the thesis that the Germans allegedly were not aware of the atrocities of Nazism. He predicted the defeat of national socialism at a time when Hitler was most triumphant and the behavior of German society after the war when it came to settlements. Nobody, as he wrote in his diary, anticipating the future defeat of his own country, will be willing to admit their faith in Hitler, nobody will admit wartime wicked deeds, either. If, therefore, one is to count on de-Nazification and re-education of entire German society, it must be a long process forced from outside by the Allies. The Germans themselves will never do such an assignment. The propaganda daze which Kellner discovers in his circle (he is an employee of court administration in a small town near Gießen) is so universal that the only effective remedy for such a state of affairs seems to be a lost war and unconditional capitulation.

Wasserpolacken. Relacja Polaka w służbie Wehrmachtu

Author(s): Joachim Ceraficki / Language(s): Polish

A reminiscence of a Pole from Grudziądz about his forced service at the Hitler Army. An important testimony of how much the wartime fates of Poles from Silesia and Pomerania could differ from stereotypical ideas. Joachim Ceraficki was forcibly conscripted into Wehrmacht in May 1942. As a third-class citizen of the Reich he spent almost three years in the German Army. He deserted in January 1945. He tried to be a good soldier, because it was a way of minimizing the risk of death. In the trenches his patriotic attitude would be of no relevance. Comradeship was the most important thing there. Ceraficki describes his experiences of that time without pathos: he writes about his pals, fear, girls, leaves at home, and living conditions of German soldiers on the front. He does not try to defend any thesis or excuse himself. He simply writes how it was.

Castle and Cathedral in Modern Prague. Longing for the Sacred in a Skeptical Age

Author(s): Bruce R. Berglund / Language(s): English

Six million people visit Prague Castle each year. Here is the story of how this ancient citadel was transformed after World War I from a neglected, run-down relic into the seat of power for independent Czechoslovakia—and the symbolic center of democratic postwar Europe. The restoration of Prague Castle was a collaboration of three remarkable figures in twentieth-century east central Europe: Tomáš Masaryk, the philosopher who became Czechoslovakia’s first president; his daughter Alice, a social worker trained in the settlement houses of Chicago who was founding director of the Czechoslovak Red Cross and her father’s trusted confidante; and the architect, Jože Plečnik of Slovenia, who integrated reverence for Classical architecture into distinctly modern designs. Their shared vision saw the Castle not simply as a government building or historic landmark but as the sacred center of the new republic, even the new Europe—a place that would embody a different kind of democratic politics, rooted in the spiritual and the moral. With a biographer’s attention to detail, historian Bruce Berglund presents lively and intimate portraits of these three figures. At the same time, he also places them in the context of politics and culture in interwar Prague and the broader history of religion and secularization in modern Europe. Gracefully written and grounded in a wide array of sources, Castle and Cathedral in Modern Prague is an original and accessible study of how people at the center of Europe, in the early decades of the twentieth century, struggled with questions of morality, faith, loyalty, and skepticism.

Model homo oeconomicus. Geneza, ewolucja, wpływ na rzeczywistość gospodarczą

Author(s): Joanna Dzionek-Kozłowska / Language(s): Polish

Model of homo oeconomicus (economic man) is one of the most popular ideas created in economic sciences. The concept coined by John S. Mill in the 1830s to define the scope of economics became a component of the “hard core” of the mainstream approach in the 20th century. At different points of its evolution, it has been assumed that economic man seeks for maximisation of wealth, profit, utility or preferences and in so doing he acts rationally. The monograph is a study of the origin and evolution of the model of homo oeconomicus and the criticism levelled at it. Additionally, the issue of an influence of the concept on economic reality is investigated. Such an attempt was inspired by the popularity of the idea of economic performativity and the voices raised by both the economists and the general public about the potential, negative impact of economic education on the attitudes of economics graduates. The research methods employed to accomplish such tasks are the texts’ exegesis, rational reconstruction and historical reconstruction (cf. Rorty 1984). In search of the factors influencing the evolution of homo oeconomicus model I benefit from both the absolutist and relativist approaches (Blaug 2000, 23–29; cf. Lakatos [1971] 1978, 118–121).

Kultura monastyczna w późnośredniowiecznej Bułgarii (Byzantina Lodziensia XXX)

Author(s): Jan Mikołaj Wolski / Language(s): Polish

The life of the monks was entirely attuned to one goal – the salvation of the soul. The desire to be saved and the idea of how it could be achieved shaped the foundations of monastic culture. Of all the Christians who declared the same overarching objective, the monks were distinguished by the fortitude of their resolve, which determined their characteristic radicalism. The greatest masters of Eastern Christian spirituality: Saint Basil the Great, Dorotheus of Gaza, Saint Isaac the Syrian and Saint John Climacus, would instruct those wanting eternal glory to never neglect the issue of their salvation. Ascetic life was thought to give a better chance of achieving salvation, as opposed to living “in the world”. In this work, monastic culture has been shown as a totality of symbolic means used by the monks to fulfil their life purpose. The dissertation is based on varied sources, primarily including what would be read by the monks in those days (selective choice), texts describing their lives (i.e., the lives of saints) and regulating them, and texts conveying the opinions of the monasteries and their inhabitants, written by the people living at the time (donation deeds of the then rulers, monks’ own writing).

Dolny Śląsk 1936-1956. Szybki rozwój i nieudana odbudowa. Wpływ wiedzy na produkcję przemysłową

Author(s): Kouli Yaman / Language(s): Polish

The author analyzes the development of industry in Lower Silesia in the years of 1936-1956 in the context of the question about the role of knowledge in the production process. He suggests a connection between the collapse of industrial production in the region after 1945 and the displacement of the German population. He shows the results of a loss of information networks, assuming that certain categories of knowledge cannot be "stored" in any other way than through human memory.

Untold Stories from the Wild East

Author(s): Andras Kelemen / Language(s): English

András G. Kelemen shares his stories from a long transnational professional career. Kelemen worked in various roles in transnational organisations. He has four children and three grandchildren. When it comes to daily politics, while being a diehart patriot and simultaneously a cosmopolitan, Kelemen says “I am a diehard democrat. However, to confuse anyone” he admits during his professional years as a top manager he had to skip some democratic processes as the pressures of time specific critical decisions dictated. Kelemen, as clearly seen from his satirical story telling in this book, says he would listen eagerly to the opinions of his colleagues if there was enough time, “but this happened rather scarcely”.

Monografia prezentuje ciekawe podejście do analizy procesów metropolizacji, bazujące na niezwykle bogatych, zróżnicowanych, a często wręcz unikatowych danych, jak w przypadku przestrzeni coworkingowych. Kulturowe historie podróżowania

Author(s): / Language(s): English,Polish

This book is an attempt to define historically significant travel models. The variety of texts it contains allows for recreating continuity and change within the complex European discourse. The authors understand travel as a practice causing a transfer of our knowledge and a way to consolidate specific cultural patterns and define their broader contexts. Therefore, it has both symbolic and practical functions, because travel dynamizes history and perpetuates it, consolidates individual cultures from within and becomes a vehicle for mediating beyond their borders. Travel in the perspective outlined in this volume will enable us to see the movements, repetitions, and gaps between patterns, both those matrixing cultural practice and those related to the emergence of discursive orders focused around this practice.

The book is a new monographic study of Adam Didur’s (24.12.1873 – 7.01.1946) artistic, educational and organizational legacy – an opera singer who made a name for himself in the Polish musical culture at the end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century and who succesfully performed on all major opera stages in Poland and all over the world, including The Metropolitan Opera and Teatro alla Scala. The monograph presents the current state of research concerning Didur and his disciples on the basic of studies, theatre criticism and archival documents made available, often for the first time, by Polish and foreign archives and institutions. A lot of space has been given to the texts that bring the latests results of research on the creation by Didur and the artists expatriated from Lviv of an opera theatre in Upper Silesia after World War II.

The post-conference volume presents works in the field of ancient hunting. The texts published in it contain information on hunting ethics and references to animal studies. The majority of chapters deal with hunting in antiquity. The texts of Plato, Nemezjan, Arrian or Luxorious were used for the analysis. There are also references to the literature of later centuries: ”Dziady” written by Adam Mickiewicz or translations of Latin hunting treatises prepared by Bruno Kiciński. Preserved time chronology allows to follow the scope of changes which took place in hunting methods and an overall assessment of hunting over the centuries.
