L'EUROPE AU JOUR LE JOUR. VOL 01, La Crise Bosniaque 1908-1909

Author(s): Auguste Gauvain / Language(s): French

The 14 volumes of Auguste Gauvain represent an <strong>11 Years Political Diary</strong> of the very origins of Modern Europe as it evolved in early 20th century from a multitude of disintegrations (OTTOMAN EMPIRE…), competitions between colonialist powers (BERLIN-BAGDAD….), diplomatic pinpricks (AFFAIRE AGADIR….), side-theatres of war (BALKAN WARS 1912/13…) and, finally, the unique and global catastrophe of WorldWar I.<br>The idea of Modern Europe originated simultaneously from the efforts of thousands of individual politicians, diplomats, intellectuals to find applicable ways to prevent those European « Bloodlands » (<i>Timothy D. Snyder</i> ) during their own age as well as and for the future of Europe.<br>In 1908, when Austria-Hungary implemented the annexation of Bosnia-Herzegovina, the French journalist and Foreign-Policy expert Auguste Gauvain considered this decision of the Habsburg Empire as the beginning of a process which, more or less unavoidably, would result in a European War. Hence, he began writing a daily column on the “Event of the Day” in European politics for the French journal « Les Debats ». With few and short interruptions during WW I he did so on each day until the end of the Versailles Peace negotiations in 1919. In early 1920s he published the full collection of all these columns in 14 volumes with the title <strong>« L’Europe au Jour le Jour ».</strong><br>CEEOL has decided to re-publish all these 14 volumes and nearly 10.000 pages as a contemporary key document for understanding the very origins of Modern Europe, the historical progress it represents and the historical necessities and forces which triggered its development. Even its supra-national institution-building after WW II cannot be really understood without this historical background of a few decades before. <br><br><strong>FOR DETAILS REGARDING THIS VOLUME PLEASE DOWNLOAD PDFs FROM THE «Contents»-TAB HERE ↓↓ BELOW</strong>

Jędrzej Moraczewski. Wspomnienia. Ludzie, czasy i zdarzenia. Część pierwsza. Młodość i praca inżynierska. Tom 1. Lata nauki 1870–1896

Author(s): Ilona Florczak / Language(s): Polish

Jędrzej Moraczewski’s thoroughly subjective memories reveal a small dose of privacy. However, through the mesh of the author’s life story, they show the picturesque Galician reality, the mechanisms determining the functioning of institutions, offices and political parties towards the end of the 19th century, as well as the intellectual elite milieu in the 19th-century Lwów. This environment had a great impact on shaping Moraczewski’s national, civil and political consciousness. It also affected the choice of his ideological path and his active participation in public life.

Die Albanesen und die Großmächte

Author(s): Vladan Đorđević / Language(s): German

At the end of 1912, the Kingdom of Serbia occupied most of the Albanian-populated territory to the Adriatic coast. The army of Montenegro was present around Shkodër. During the attempt to annex the lands, Serbian and Montenegrin armies committed numerous crimes against the local Albanian population. (Wikipedia). The author, nevertheless, starts his book with the sentence: „The appearance and establishment of the victorious Serb armies on the east coast of the Adriatic worked miracles.“. The author (former Serbian Prime-Minister from 1897 to 1900) makes the attempt to add with this book to the „military establishment“ of the Serbian appearance in the Albanian lands a „political establishment“ oft he Serbian interests in conflict with both the Italian and the Austrian interests in the region.

On 13-15 September 2022, the History of Archaeology in the Czech Lands and Slovakia conference was held at the Department of History, Faculty of Arts, Palacký University in Olomouc (with the organizational contribution of the Moravian Museum in Brno). Nominally it was dedicated to two anniversaries connected with Moravian archaeology - 70 years since the death of Innocence Ladislav Červinka (1 February 1869 - 3 October 1952), the most important Moravian prehistorian of the first half of the 20th century, and 115 years since the first congress of the Moravian Archaeological Club in Litovel, an association that since the end of 1906 has brought together most Moravian prehistorians of Czech nationality under Červinka's presidency. It was attended by 40 interested persons from the Czech lands, Slovakia and Poland. The proceedings contain two dozen texts: 16 of the 25 papers that were presented at the conference, 3 additional papers that were announced in preliminary versions of the conference programme but ultimately did not appear due to various circumstances, and an edition of one of Červinka's manuscripts. The texts are structured into five thematic parts. The first one (Innocent Ladislav Červinka) with seven papers is devoted to the personality of Innocent Ladislav Červinka. The second part (Personalities) presents eight articles on European and regional personalities associated with archaeology. Two contributions of the third part (Societies) deal with the organizational structures of Czech and Moravian archaeology. The other two articles in Part Four (Finds and Sites) deal with the history of one remarkable find from Slovakia and one important Slovakian site.

Obraz souseda: diskurzivní analýza českých a polských literárněvzdělávacích textů

Author(s): Michaela Nakládalová / Language(s): Czech

The theme of the image of the neighbour is understood in the present work as the image of Poland and Polish culture in Czech textbooks serving literary education from the beginning of schooling to the final school leaving exam and the image of the Czech Republic in Polish textbooks. Over 300 textbooks were analysed for the purposes of the thesis. The image of the neighbour can be divided into primary and secondary. The primery one concentrate on the headings Czech, Czech Republic and the Czech authors. The image of the Czech Republic and Czech culture in Polish textbooks is represented in particular by the work Švejk, then Václav Havel and his work The Power of the Powerless, Milan Kundera and Bohumil Hrabal - especially Ostře sledované vlaky. The only other artist of Czech nationality who is mentioned on a regular basis is Alfons Mucha, but often without information that he is Czech. The image of Poland and Polish culture in Czech literature textbooks is presented by Tuwim's and Brzechwa's verses at the first level, but usually without further information about the author. In later grades, pupils are introduced to Henryk Siekiewicz and Adam Mickiewicz, and the most prominent representation of Polish authors is in textbooks for secondary schools, although these are often very brief mentions. The secondary image is focused on the context and common historical experiences. There is not much room in textbooks for looking back at how a neighbouring country experienced a given phase, the biggest being on the subject of communism.

Oblicza Wojny, t. 10, Narzędzia wojny

Author(s): / Language(s): English,Russian

This tenth volume of the Oblicza Wojny (Faces of War) series, contains 12 papers written by archaeologists and historians from Czechia, Greece, Canada, Germany, Poland, Hungary, and Italy. Such a team of researchers not only ensures an interdisciplinary approach to the issue at hand but also guarantees a multifaceted approach. All papers address the problem named in the title of this volume: the Tools of War. We can distinguish several levels of research undertaken by the Authors: themes related to the armaments of particular armies and fortification systems; references to military formations and the impact of their development on the battlefield; diplomacy as a tool during war, and less obvious issues: money, bicycle, and even a lekythos.New approaches to well-known research problems, reinterpretation of old analyses and views, and taking up hitherto unexplored issues are features that unite all the texts, at the same time making them a reading material recommended for both specialists and students.

Karol Irzykowski w dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym. Studia i dyskusje w 150. rocznicę urodzin krytyka

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

This monograph, prepared by numerous authors, shows the figure of Karol Irzykowski in the interwar period, presenting the attitude of the critic towards the Young Poland movement and his interactions with the avant-garde. The articles synthetize Irzykowski’s reflections on the sensual representation of experience, pointing to his intellectual activity in the field of theatre and cinema. The authors address Irzykowski’s discussions with Marxism, his polemics critical of the Jews (the circle of “Wiadomości Literackie”), his attitude to the Polish Academy of Literature. The last bloc of texts is devoted to a unique clercism of the writer and the solitude resulting from it, shown against the background of other models of clercism in the context of literary geography and Irzykowski's accusations of anti-Semitism.

Češi se ve světě neztratí, natož v Americe. Medailonky ze života českých vystěhovalců

Author(s): Miloslav Rechcígl / Language(s): Czech

In the book, the author presents a panorama of the fates of selected personalities whose roots are in the Czech lands and who achieved extraordinary success in the United States and whose activities significantly influenced the development and growth of the new homeland. It is a saga of ordinary and powerful people whose influence and importance often extended beyond the borders of the United States. However, a large number of the persons mentioned will certainly be completely unknown to the Czech readership, as their Czech origins were generally unknown. The book covers the entire period from the discovery of the New World to the beginning of the 21st century. The individual personalities were chosen solely according to the taste and interest of the author, and the selection was based on their importance, contribution and the interest of their lives, the only condition being that they were either born on Czech territory or were descendants of emigrants from Czech lands.
