Author(s): Victoria Petrova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 14/2023

This article examines the imperfections of the Bulgarian media system, which periodically manifest as media crises. The research method used is a case study. The case, which is described and placed in a media and political context, is related to the suspended broadcast of the "Horizon" program on the Bulgarian National Radio on September 13, 2019. The analysis is based on the documents collected in Vyara Angelova's book "#Who stopped BNR", normative acts issued by Bulgarian and European institutions, scientific and media publications on the subject. The conclusions reached by the research are that the media system in Bulgaria is in an unfinished process of transformation. A specific feature of the media environment is that partial elements characteristic of free societies are noticeable. But the factors that dominate bring the Bulgarian media system closer to the authoritarian model defined by Fred Siebert, Wilbur Schramm, and Theodore Peterson.

Decolonization of Mental Health? The Early Days of an Ongoing Process from a Global Historical Perspective

Decolonization of Mental Health? The Early Days of an Ongoing Process from a Global Historical Perspective

Author(s): Tiago Pires / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

The Idea of Kyiv as a New Jerusalem in the Murals of the Church of the Saviour at Berestove (1643–1644)

The Idea of Kyiv as a New Jerusalem in the Murals of the Church of the Saviour at Berestove (1643–1644)

Author(s): Alina Kondratiuk / Language(s): English Issue: 7/2023

Author(s): Marine Turashvili / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2023

In the present article we examine mythological legends on imps, belonging to a specific genre of Georgian folk prose. They are new and have occupied their autonomous place in Georgian folklore since the 80s of the XIX century. During investigation we used the methods of secondary analysis and comparison. We used the texts of oral histories comparing them with published texts and with those kept in the Folklore Archive of Shota Rustaveli Institute of Georgian Literature. Oral histories are also recorded during our field-work in 2009 and kept as video materials in the mentioned archive. Unpublished archival materials contain the beliefs of the “low mythology” that have universal character. Mythological narratives on imps are based on real stories that are later transformed into unknowable events by folk imagination. In order to gain an understanding of this folk character, it is necessary to consider a number of key questions. These include: where do they try to meet people, how do they look – in terms of their appearance – when they are activated, how do they relocate, what is their function, what kind of relations do they have with human beings, and how can people get rid of them. In addition, it is important to consider the modern people’s attitude towards this character. Their habitation is proximate to that of humans, in narrow gorges, dark, abandoned and jinxed locales. They meet people in uninhabited places, attempting to intimidate them, but as the area becomes settled, they leave. In popular imagination, the imp is a diminutive malevolent spirit, resembling a man’s offspring. It may also take the form of a wild animal. They emerge from the second half of October to the middle of November, posing a significant threat to people, even causing madness. If a man knows how to get rid of a chinka, the chinka cannot cause harm; if not, a man will become ill for a long time or up to the end of his life. Imps are afraid of fire. If anybody threatens him with a firebrand, the imp immediately runs away. In modern language, the name of this mythological figure is used for the description of a quick, astute, nimble person. The investigation revealed that the imp of the third generation, an evil spirit, left a lasting impression on the population and continues to be a topic of interest to this day. The research demonstrated that texts on imps are accompanied by a narrator’s synoptic marking.

Author(s): Lia Karichashvili / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2023

Folklore is regarded as one of the sources of Shota Rustaveli’s worldview. The folk wisdom was reflected in the Knight in the Panther’s Skin as emanation of the national consciousness and being and, at the same time, general cultural paradigms that occur in the literature of various nations. In Rustaveli’s narrative the folk wisdom is frequently accompanied formula “it is said” that emphasizes old age of the idea, its oral widespread nature and anonymity. Many Rustaveli’s aphorisms are very close to the folk proverbs with their ideas though they are formulated with Rustaveli’s eloquence. The semantic and stylistic closeness of Rustavelian aphorisms and folk proverbs evidences that along with the brilliant education of his time, Rustaveli had deep folk wisdom. It is due to this reason that the source of some aphorisms is folk sayings. At the same time, a number of Rustaveli‘s aphorisms became the basis of folk saying.

Demontaż idei wolności. Degeneracja dydaktyki w humanistyce?

Demontaż idei wolności. Degeneracja dydaktyki w humanistyce?

Author(s): Agnieszka Doda-Wyszyńska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 48/2024

Didactics is a function of an educational system based on examination-observation of the people who participate in the process of teaching and learning. In the process of conveying knowledge this observation of a student by a teacher/master, and vice versa, every now and then builds a practice of independent thinking. On the one hand, the process enables the development of ideas, but, on the other hand, also distorts them and exposes a humanities student to the pitfall of ideology. In my reflections about the disassembly of ideas and deteriorating education I shall make use of the concept of cognitive bias, the polemic about the contemporary University (Bill Readings), the concept of Jacques Lacan’s discourses, Hannah Arendt’s findings about willing and ideology, and Niklas Luhmann’s assumptions of social systems theory understood as autopoietic systems of codified rules of operation.

Humanism and Posthumanism in the Post-truth Era – Pedagogical Implications

Humanism and Posthumanism in the Post-truth Era – Pedagogical Implications

Author(s): Małgorzata Obrycka / Language(s): English Issue: 48/2024

The research problem put forth in this paper is the seeking of an answer to the question about better and more effective ways of acquiring and transferring knowledge in the so-called post-truth era. Therefore, the point of reference here is the category of post-truth, defined as a phenomenon where the objective facts play a lesser role in the process of shaping a widely understood public opinion than emotions, evaluative judgements or personal beliefs. In such circumstances, a set of ideas, models of thinking, as well as ethical proposals – represented within the framework of such concepts as humanism and posthumanism – faces a huge challenge issued by the contemporaneity in the form of gaining social recognition and prestige. The phenomena developing in such process directly influence the way the pedagogical processes are perceived and being designed.

Humanistyczne zakorzenienie vs. egzystencjalna bezdomność: debata Iwanow-Gerszenzon w świetle dylematów historiozofii nowoczesnej

Author(s): Michał Kruszelnicki / Language(s): Polish Issue: 48/2024

The paper revisits the dialogue between Vyacheslav Ivanov and Mikhail Gershenzon in order to present two essentially different orientations in the approach to humanistic heritage and its meaning in human life. The first of these two perspectives is represented by V. Ivanov who feels amongst the great works of culture “at home,” who praises their charms and spiritual-aesthetic riches. The second perspective – as evoked by Gershenzon – is more pessimistic, existentially inclined, filled with tragic awareness. It points out to the problem of crucial importance to the historiosophical self-awareness of modernity: the accumulation of cultural knowledge and the release of theoretical reflection have alienated the human being and cast it into existential homelessness. The paper further argues that (1) there exists an irreducible hiatus between culture and the reality with its power of negativity, and that (2) the ambassadors of culture, such as Ivanov, conceal this hiatus in an attempt to convince us that theoretical humanistic reflection intensifies our perception of the world, while in Gersenzhon’s historiosophical view it ruins the immediacy and spontaneity of life.

Author(s): Goran Blagoev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2024

The status of Mount Athos during the First Balkan War and the accompanying peace negotiations was a major issue for Russia, Greece and the Western Great Powers. Paradoxically, Bulgaria, which is one of the countries in the Balkan Union, shows almost no interest in this problem. Bulgarian diplomacy perceives it as a private case that has much more background positions than the big and important problem related to the territorial expansion in the White Sea region and Macedonia. The article answers the question why Bulgarian politics underestimates the importance of the problem related to the status of the monastic territory on the Athos peninsula and its importance for the international prestige of the state, as well as its geostrategic positioning on the Balkans.

THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO (DRC) AND THE INTERNATIONALIZATION OF INTERNAL CONFLICTS

THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO (DRC) AND THE INTERNATIONALIZATION OF INTERNAL CONFLICTS

Author(s): Peter Anyang Nyongo / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

From the time it was colonized to the present day, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has neither experienced democracy nor lasting peace and stability. Instead, it has all the qualitative attributes of a fragile state. Empirically, the beginnings of a fragile state are linked to rebellions which led to civil wars and thereafter took on a long-run trend with the capture and exploitation of resources. For example, diamonds in Sierra Leone, oil in Sudan and South Sudan and rare metals in DRC. Fragility stems from being in conflict repeatedly, a sign of a vicious cycle where conflict generates grievance and grievance generates further conflict. However recurring conflicts are also often driven by greed for resources whose control can fund a conflict ad infinitum especially if the resources are in demand globally. Hence the conflict becomes internationalized. The entry of international players is based on predatory opportunities to control commodity exports. Because the conflict also displaces people (and creates a rebellious diaspora), especially those with influence and money, these grievances fuel the discontent of diaspora which mobilizes funds to finance the conflict further.

ARMENIA AND NAGORNO-KARABAKH: THE HISTORY OF AN UNSETTLING RELATIONSHIP

ARMENIA AND NAGORNO-KARABAKH: THE HISTORY OF AN UNSETTLING RELATIONSHIP

Author(s): Stephan Rindlisbacher / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

The Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict has been a visible constant on the international stage since 1988. On the Armenian side, the commemoration of the genocide of 1915 and the Soviet decision to attach Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijan in 1921 appeared to be the main drivers to produce and reproduce „groupness”. Whereas Armenian nationalist narratives had first been silenced and then mitigated during the Soviet era, they have become decisive since the dissolution of the USSR. Armenian ethnopolitical entrepreneurs exploited them to establish a new political legitimacy. With the wars in 2020 and 2023, the tide turned in favour of Azerbaijan, as it managed to reconquer Nagorno-Karabakh and expel its Armenian population. Now, Azerbaijan appears as the main driver of the conflict when it utters claims for a corridor to Nakhchivan through the Armenian territory.
