Author(s): Valentina Mitkova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 10/2018

Within the Bulgarian national state, the civilizational social trends, the aspiration to assimilate European experience and mentality were largely demonstrated by the wave of women‘s periodicals published until the Second World War. Following the American historian Karen Offen‘s definition of historically existing feminisms, the women‘s press in the country could be divided into two large categories: newspapers and magazines with a clearly stated (individualist) feminist profile, discussing current socio-politically issues, directly corresponding to the status of the female gender, and periodicals labeled as „household press“ focusing on the „women‘s world“ understood as home and family, incorporating relational feminist arguments into their rhetoric. An example of the modernization efforts of the household periodicals in Bulgaria and their sensitivity to modern emancipatory ideas was one of the pioneering women‘s projects in that category – the magazine Moda i domakinstvo (Fashion and Household), 1897-1906. Edited and published by Elena Usheva, Moda i domakinstvo, like the household press in general, tried in parallel to respond to its own Bulgarian (and Balkan) social, economic and cultural context (marked by persistent patriarchal notions of roles, responsibilities and the social status of women) and emancipatory trends on a global scale.

The World without Women: Gender Issues in the Gesta Regum Sclavorum

The World without Women: Gender Issues in the Gesta Regum Sclavorum

Author(s): Dragana Kunčer / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2023

This paper aims to explore the role of gender in the Gesta regum Sclavorum (GRS ), also known as the Chronicle of the Priest of Dioclea. It critically examines the portrayal of women in this historical narrative, noting its reflection of a broader trend in medieval male-authored texts that perpetuate female inferiority and marginalization. In the GRS , women predominantly emerge as anonymous and passive consorts of kings, relegated primarily to the role of progenitors of heirs. Instances of women taking independent action, as exemplified by the widow of Hungarian prince Kys, then Cossara, the daughter of Samuel and wife of St. Vladimir, and Iaquinta, wife of King Bodin, are depicted in a manner that suggests their inclusion in the narrative is due to the benefits these actions provided to their male relatives. The portrayal of female agency in the GRS is thus interpreted as a reflection of the gendered social norms of the era, which were more inclined to resist rather than support the women’s empowerment.

Author(s): Dušan Fundić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 4/2023

The paper explores the rivalry between the Principality of Montenegro and Austria-Hungary in northern Albania. The rivalry in Malësia e Madhe inhabited by the Hoti, Gruda, Kelmendi, Kastratiand Shkreli tribes who inhabited the areas along the Ottoman-Montenegro border was especially investigated. Based primarily on Austro-Hungarian sources, it presents the views of the diplomacy of the Dual Monarchy on the Montenegrin plans as well as the formation of a counter policy that was supposed to prevent the influence of Cetinje and Prince Nikola Petrović-Njegoš on the neighbouring Albanian communities. These Austro-Hungarian plans are analysed, in the first place, on the reports of the consuls in Shkodër. The relationship between Montenegro and the Malësori was seen as undesirable by Vienna and dangerous due to the predicted emergence of an autonomous Albania with Shkodër within its borders, which decision-makers in Austria-Hungary viewed as a necessary precondition for the sustainability of the future state and its own influence in it.

Савез комуниста Југославије и први покушај организације медитеранске конференције комунистичких партија Европе 1967‒1968. године

Author(s): Luka Filipovic / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 4/2023

Czechoslovakian crisis and student rebellions in Western Europe and United States were just some of the aspects of global turmoil that may have influenced a certain number of contemporary historians to mark the year 1968 as the turning point in social and political history of the later half of the 20th century. Alongside these events, communist parties of Western and Eastern Europe were going through a long period of subtile conflicts, while forming interest and ideological blocks that will later play a crucial role in the events that became known as the great schism of the socialist world, when the Soviet party finally lost the influence over the future eurocommunist parties, which was a period also marked by the sudden rise of the international influence of the Lague of Commmunists of Yugoslavia. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to contribute to the scientific research of the Yugoslav role in the events that predated and may have influenced the stated conflicts between the communist parties of Eastern and Western Europe, of which some aspects best came to light in the case of the failed atempt of Yugoslav and Italian communists to organize an international conference of the Marxist parties of Mediterranean. The paper is based upon the results of the research that included the unpublished sources from the historical archives of former Yugoslavia, which were analysed by implementation of the traditional historical method, as well as analysis of the scientific literature which provided social and ideological context of the researched historical events.

The transformation of relations with Armenia's neighboring countries has been traced. A transformation has been established in the relations between Armenia and the USA, as well as with some of the member states of the European Union. The research highlights a particular type of relationship between the political elites of Armenia and Russia - polarity and asymmetry. The observed processes of polarity and asymmetry are a concrete consequence of the lack of support in the latest conflict with Azerbaijan and the behavior of the political component of the CSTO and Russia

Ukraine, Ideology, and Arms: Coming to Terms with Just War Theory

Ukraine, Ideology, and Arms: Coming to Terms with Just War Theory

Author(s): Asger Sørensen / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2024

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has challenged the ideals of peace that I and many other left-wing critical intellectuals hold dear. By the end of the 18th century, Immanuel Kant argued that the realist law of peoples and the idea of just war should be superseded by the idea of perpetual peace, and, fortunately, the principled opposition to war was institutionalized in the United Nations in the 20th century. However, when the aggressor has already taken possession of huge swathes of territory, calls for peace may be suspected of ideological bias. The right to defend yourself is almost universally recognized, but a military counter-offensive to reconquer lost territory is not merely defense but itself aggression, and thus an act of war. Many of us, however, want to support such efforts in Ukraine, and what is worrying is that this places us on a slippery slope, reopening the possibility of justifying war. As I will argue, this is nevertheless the path we must take, thus accepting the possible justification of war and the possible justification of specific activities and armaments but not others. We should take more seriously the justice of war, with all the specific normative challenges that this implies.

DIGITALIZACIJA BAŠTINE NA PRIMJERU RIMSKIH PROVINCIJALNIH EPIGRAFSKIH SPOMENIKA

DIGITALIZACIJA BAŠTINE NA PRIMJERU RIMSKIH PROVINCIJALNIH EPIGRAFSKIH SPOMENIKA

Author(s): Amra Šačić Beća / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 2-3/2023

The first part of the paper explains the meaning of epigraphic monuments, the types of monuments and their importance for understanding of the past. The focus is on the value of this type of archaeological remains in the context of Southeast Europe. Th e paper also explains why classical epigraphic monuments should be digitalized because they are often inadequately stored in museums and other institutions. When it comes to the region of Southeast Europe, the majority of monuments were discovered in Croatia, but in other countries, this type of monument represents a valuable part of the classical heritage. To preserve these monuments and ensure that they are further used for research purposes, under the guidance of the Commissione epigrafi a e informatica (AIEGL), in 2003 it was decided to create an international network of epigraphic databases EAGLE (Electronic Archive of Greek and Latin Epigraphy). For twenty years, epigraphers have been directly or indirectly working on the digitalization of classical epigraphic monuments which is one of the largest and longest archaeological projects in the world. Th e largest number of monuments from Roman provinces have been digitalized in the databases Epigraphic Database Heidelberg, Epigraphik-Datenbank Clauss / Slaby, Ubi Erat Lupa, Roman Inscriptions of Britain, and Hispania Epigraphica Online. When it comes to Roman provinces from South-eastern Europe, we should single out Epigraphic Database Heidelberg (EDH) and Epigraphic Database Clauss / Slaby (EDCS). Epigraphic Database Heidelberg stores 6838 inscriptions from Croatia, 855 inscriptions discovered in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 1460 inscriptions from Serbia, 384 from the territory of Albania, 315 from Montenegro, 375 from Northern Macedonia and 1108 from Slovenia.

The New Hansa as a Form of Politics of Memory of the Member Cities

The New Hansa as a Form of Politics of Memory of the Member Cities

Author(s): Szymon Ostrowski / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

The paper’s main objective is to determine whether the New Hansa is a form of the Politics of Memory for cities. In the paper, the author proposes a definition of the Politics of Memory and analyses the characteristics of the medieval and modern Hansa. Separate sections analyse the old and new Hansa, and describe the discussion on the Politics of Memory in the context of paradiplomacy, especially city diplomacy. Altogether, these reflections lead to comparisons of the organisations and conclusions about the selective nature of the New Hansa in relation to its legendary predecessor. Nevertheless, the New Hansa has specific core features – such as the deliberate use of legacy, brand-oriented actions and education – that make this urban network an excellent example of the Politics of Memory implemented by municipal governments.

Equating the Unequal: Architecture and Philosophy

Equating the Unequal: Architecture and Philosophy

Author(s): Aaron White / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

This essay examines statements from the fields of architecture and philosophy concerning identity, difference, and change. Through close reading, etymological analysis, a hermeneutics of entanglement, and an investigation of the text-as-echo-chamber, initially parallel statements and restatements of architecture and philosophy (and architecture in philosophy and philosophy in architecture) “swerve.” Of special interest is the way both disciplines distinguish between (and conflate) the concepts of “difference” and “change,” as well as attempts to locate architecture’s origins in either change or the unchanging.

MODELI I PRAVCI RAZVOJA JUGOSLAVIJE I SRBIJE U POLITIČKOJ VIZIJI IVANA ĐURIĆA

Author(s): Miloš Tirnanić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 1/2024

The article deals with the research of the political views and vision of Serbia and Yugoslavia in the ideas of Ivan Đurić through the analysis of his interviews in the domestic press during 1990 and 1991, but also through the analysis of the memories of Đurić’s close associates, as well as available archival material and audio-visual material. The political vision of Ivan Đurić reflected his attitude towards the issue of further socio-political development of Serbia, as well as Yugoslavia, at the end of the Cold War era. Therefore, through the analysis of Đurić’s political ideas, the goal is to determine which directions, concepts and models of development Serbian and Yugoslav society should have aspired to, from the perspective of this engaged intellectual. The paper consists of two parts; in the first part, the historical context at the end of the Cold War era and an overview of Đurić’s political and social involvement during 1990 and 1991 are presented. In the second part, concrete examples of political, economic, social and cultural models, concepts and directions of development advocated by Ivan Đurić, by means of which he tried to provide adequate proposals and solutions for overcoming the general systemic crisis faced by the Yugoslav community, are presented and analyzed.
