The article describes the results of the research analysis involving 80 Web sites of open access journals available on the Academic Journals Platform which is a part of the Nicolaus Copernicus University Press. What was the author’s objective here was the attempt at answering the question whether the said sites comply with Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing, particularly in the aspect of publishing information required from academic journals. Simultaneously, the author carried out an investigation of how the information elements are structured on those Web sites. She examined if the labelling of investigated internet content is consistent and compliant with the information structuring model assumed by the Academic Journals Platform, or whether there is much leeway left for the editorial board members in terms of content labelling.

Open Access is constantly changing the approach to shaping the scientific information system. In the new operating conditions, the database of Web of Science citation indexes, used inbibliometrics, provides bibliographic data and abstracts as well as links to resources in Open Access. This website gives the possibility of grouping scientific publications, multi-aspect searching, analyzing and monitoring millions of documents in one place. The aim of the article is to draw attention to information management in the commercial Web of Science database and to present the methods of OA resources presentation in Web of Science and Journal Citation Reports. Due to the extent of the issues, the consideration is limited to selected aspects of the presented subject matter.

Free access to education – as per Open Access movement – is based on the fact that a user can reach data at any place, any time, and by using various sources. This rule agrees with business model 4A about accessing organization database, and it implies the necessity of designing web pages helping their users accessing a source of information conveniently. A role of this article is to discuss the 4A Rule and its influence on using the information, retaining users, as well as reviewing performance of chosen Open Access service. Using Lighthouse as a tool allows pointing out any errors on the web page’s performance and its quality. This article is enriched by literature about creating web pages, as well as by writer’s comments based on author’s experience.

The Open Access Movement has been on the increase and gaining popularity among contributors, but also editorial boards of journals and authors of monographs. Such undeniable advantages of Open Access as enhancing the availability and the impact factor of their works, encourages authors to utilize this form of publishing, also by actively searching for places where their texts will be made available. Designed to meet these expectations are repositories which gather and store texts and data, in order to make it accessible to wide spectre of audience. This article aims at popularizing and promoting the RE-BUŚ Repository of the University of Silesia as a database set up to increase the visibility of the University employees’ output.

The theme of the article is the usage of the Regional Bibliography database of the Silesian Library, its content and functionality. The scheme of operations and search possibilities offered by the Database are presented. Available search options as well as storage and processing of gained information are discussed, as well as the possibilities of creating bibliographical lists. The Base was placed as one of the elements of the bibliographic system created in the Silesian Library. It also includes the bibliography of Silesia, developed in 1936 in Katowice, which are traditional and modern electronic sources of information about the region. The paper discusses historical and contemporary solutions used in the field of creating the bibliography of Silesia. Possibilities offered by the base put into the hands of users in 2017 – creating network connections between bibliographic records and full texts placed in digital libraries and linking with other passwords in independent regional information systems are presented. The possibilities of combining a bibliographic database and a library catalog of simultaneous search for an interesting topic are presented.

The City Public Library in Gliwice over the recent years has been recording the following high indicators of its activity: more than 52,000 individuals lent items from the library’s collections and a similar number of users took advantage of the library’s cultural-educational offer. The article presents solutions introduced, consisting of technology and new library resources, which both increased the quality of the Public Library’s activity. This outline discusses the most significant projects from a viewpoint of utilizing technology in the creation of an attractive offer and, particularly, the Gliwice library’s achievements within this scope of activity. The presented material may encourage and inspire those cultural institutions who are willing to implement similar solutions in their services and activity.

The aim of the article is to analyze the methods utilized in the authorial cycle of library lessons “Different faces of teen fiction,” conducted for the 4th–8th grade students as well as secondary school students at the Municipal and County Public Library in Pszczyna. The cycle comprises lessons concerned with teen fiction, fantasy and horror. The analysis includes the methods utilized during the lessons to familiarize the students with literary genres, practical exercises implemented in class and notes from class. The study is predominantly aimed at presenting effective and interesting methods of engaging the young reader audience that foster interest in reading and indicating the correlations occurring while acquiring library collections following the course.

Having witnessed the gradual changes in the perception of the mission of the university and the turn towards improving the curriculum, the primary aim of this study has been to look at this issue from the perspective of the students at the University of Silesia in Katowice, in particular at the Institute of Library and Information Science. The study has been based on a survey in which there were 86 participants. The participants pointed to particular spheres of activity which have been then divided into four areas of interest. On the basis of the collected data as well as the conclusions drawn from the survey, the study has proposed and contributed to the implementation of several practical solutions aimed at improving the academia. Familiarity with the expectations voiced by the students at the Institute of Library and Information Science can be helpful in constructing further development initiatives within the Institute as well as the Faculty and the associated Information Science Student Research Circle.
