The object of study in this paper is the heortological nomenclature established in the Old Bulgarian and Church Slavonic texts. This investigation sets out to extract the calendar names of the feasts and of the run-up to them from records, which appeared in different years and belong to different genres. After that they are subjected to a linguistic analysis, which includes observations on the nomination techniques in Christian heortology, the phenomena synonymy, doublets and polysemy in the names of the Christian calendar and their syntagmatics and epidigmatics.

Slavic elements in the calendar rites of the Romanians of Bukovina

This study is aimed at identifying the most noticeable Slavic elements in the calendar rites of Bukovyna. It analyzes material collected by Romanian researchers in the second half of the 19th – early 20th century (E. Niculiță-Voronca, T. Pamfile, L. Bodnărescu, А. Fochi, A. Zașciuc), documents from the Central Scientific Archive of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Moldova, the New Linguistic Atlas of Romania, Moldova and Bukovyna (1987), as well as personal observations recorded by the authors of the study in Ukraine and Romania during ethnographic expeditions. In the calendar rites of the Romanians of Bukovyna, some clear Slavic elements can be identified, such as some names of calendar holidays, Ukrainian elements in such rites as koliada, the Christmas star, shchedruvannya. Ukrainian motifs of musical folklore in winter rites, as well as the use of the names of Ukrainian opryshky and haidamaky, the adaptation of the “walking with vertep”, the use of the term vidma of Ukrainian origin, the penetration of the name and main text of the Ukrainian Malanka, etc.

Representations of Indian ascetics: from Johann Martin Honigberger’s memoir to early twentieth century Romanian newspapers and journals

In recent times, Indian ascetics have become pop icons due to the influence of visual entertainment media. Outside their country of origin, they are often negatively stereotyped to foster derogatory understandings of the Others and their cultures. In this paper, we will focus on representations of Indian ascetics. Starting with their early depictions in the memoir of the Transylvanian physician Dr Honigberger, we will examine their representations in Romanian newspapers and journals. In order to account for Romanian interest in ascetics from a faraway land, this paper will take into consideration the historical developments that led to the growth of European interest in them. Through a comparison between nineteenth century British (Osborne 1840) and East-European (Honigberger 1851, 1852) writings on Indian ascetics, we will try to understand whether conceptualization of Indian ascetics in Romanian-speaking territories differed in any way from that of the British colonizers in India. The paper will then move on to examine how the Romanian press conceptualized these ascetics. Evidences point to the fact that the Romanian press became interested in Indian ascetics, erroneously generalized as fakirs, from ca. 1900 to 1940. Analysing Romanian journal and magazine articles on Indian fakirs, which till now remain untranslated into English, this article will try to show how the Romanian press conceived of the ascetics of a faraway country. Our research methodology is based on text analysis, relying on a broader cultural perspective. For the purpose of this paper, we have selected a series of article samples, taking into consideration diversity in terms of regions (southern Romania and Transylvania), as well as the most relevant period (1906-1935). The interest in Indian sadhus and their doings basically emerged starting with the mid-nineteenth century. Yet over the following decades accounts have changed in terms of focus. While nineteenth century authors were primarily concerned with the physical aspects of their work, texts written in the first decades of the twentieth century suggest that journalists and writers generally looked at the more surprising and entertaining side of fakirs’ actions. Finally, the paper suggests why Romanian press lost interest in Indian ascetics after the 1940s.

Kultúra és kapitalizmus

Our study demonstrates that the analysis of culture should be embedded into the history of capitalism. Through this understanding of culture's materiality, we highlight that culture is not only a spiritual but also a materially embedded phenomenon. We argue that this analysis is also essential to outline culture's role in a post-capitalist world.Our study offers four perspectives to analyze the diverse, often indirect, relationship between culture and capitalism. We show how the diversity of culture is more than heterogeneity but rather part of class conflicts and struggles. By examining the cultural institutions, our paper points out that they play a crucial role in the reproduction of the laborforce. It also points out that global and nation-state-led cultural production are not contradictory but entangled phenomena. Finally, our paper emphasizes that the relationship between culture and capitalism cannot be understood as abstract laws but must also always consider the social trajectories of professional cultural producers, who are a central but often invisible dark matter.

The paper focuses on identifying and methodizing key strategies and ways of rendering culture specific information in Portuguese translations of Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin and aims at assessing their adequacy. Culture differences between Russia, Portugal, and Brazil provide grounds for cross-cultural barriers, the negative effect of which could be minimized if translation bridges the gap between the source and target cultural worlds. This research relies on culture specific lexical items known as ‘realia’ to examine how culture code is transferred in Russian-to-Portuguese translation of fiction. The study resulted in a new translation model providing an algorithm for rendering culture specific words. The model uses a complex of criteria that allow assessing equivalence and adequacy of items in the target language to those in the source language. Applying the model in the course of Russian-to-Portuguese translation will advance theoretically motivated decisions and contribute to the methodology of pre-translation fiction text analysis.

Their contribution to the revelation of the national film legacy, the new film movements, the foundation of a modern Film archive, the inauguration of the film education in Brazil and the oldest film festival in the country is undeniable.

The article examines the interaction of the Balkan peoples in the composition of multinational empires. Widespread multilingualism and frequent switching from one language to another eventually led to the formation of the Balkan Linguistic Union. With the rise of national consciousness in the 19th century and the change of political configuration, the process of convergence of the Balkan languages was interrupted. Moreover, individual regional dialects of some languages, once united by a common name, took on a life of their own. But there is also a reverse process, languages artificially separated for political reasons are regaining their former integrity.

The text examines the narrative of the video game Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice through Jean-Noël Thon’s three-part perspectivist model, focusing on its third dimension - the ideological perspective. It states that the elements of the gameplay, usually defined as purely ludic, in fact play a prominent narrative role. The game manages to trick the player without lying to them by relying on classic video game relations such as believing in what is seen and told, the self-identification of the player with the avatar, and uncritically accepting the game’s instructions/information as relating to their own actions, not to those of the avatar. The ideological perspective of the characters combined with the thus created ‘misleading’ gameplay question the game-player relationship, while at the same time succeeding in an original way to distance the player from the avatar and ultimately succeeding to make the player feel towards the game as the character feels within in his own world. Accordingly, if the gameplay has a message, i.e., allows itself to be semanticized independently of and in conflict with the cinematic cuts in the game, it functions narratively and creates a dissonance resulting from two different and parallel forms of storytelling.

This study analyses the relationship between failure and success from two perspectives: creative psychology and sociology of creation. By starting from Angelo Mitchievici’s recent book, “Farmecul vieților distruse. Câteva reflecții despre ratare” [The Charm of Failed Lives] (2022), which explores one of the favorite themes of decadent literature and art (failure), I aim to highlight the most relevant existential postures in a writer’s life: the anti-bourgeois aristocratic posture (the dandy) and the proletarian-democratic posture (the bohemian). It is not by chance that Mitchievici dwells on the works the Romanian-French writer Emil Cioran, who tried to build an image of a secluded writer, close to anonymity, avoiding to cultivate both the bohemian and the dandy style, by adopting a lifestyle shaped by the cult of work and discipline, in the spirit of the Protestant ethics theorized by Max Weber. Mitchievici explains very convincingly how, once he emigrated to Paris, Cioran completely abandoned the Romanian language, in which he was convinced he was failing as a writer, in order to devote himself exclusively to writing in French, with the idea of conquering global glory. In addition to Cioran, the authors in focus are Francis Scott Fitzgerald, Shakespeare, Voltaire, Flaubert, Dino Buzzatti, Mihail Sadoveanu, Mircea Cărtărescu, etc., which provides the critic with the opportunity to reconnect with his former books (e.g. “Decadență și decadentism în contextul modernității românești și europene”, 2011) and to show a refined and mature essayist’s vein.

The paper is part of an empirical study of Anglophone travel books describing Bulgaria. Its subject are the images through which the topic of ‘Bulgaria’ is communicated to the British public at the beginning of 20th century. These images are found to be informed by the symbols of the dominant discourse iconography as well as by innovative approaches to the representational paradigm. The paper applies the historical discourse approach to the process of uncovering the link between the representations of Bulgaria in English travel writing and the models of identification deriving from the socio-political reality of the division between the colonial Great Powers and the marginal newly-liberated states. The constructivist focus on the continuous mutually constitutive interaction between social reality and communication is pivotal in the study. The travelogue is interpreted as a communicative act in the course of which the subject and the object position themselves and assume or attribute to each other identities matching their social roles. The images of „gentlemen“, „peasants“, „warriors“, unlock models of identification that either reaffirm the status quo in the British-Bulgarian relations or advocate a closer engagement of Britain with Bulgaria.

This manuscript is called Chehlarov’s copy because it is known that Chehlarov was one of his possessors. Also it is known as the Fourth Tarnovo Copy of “Istorija slavjanobolgarskaja“ because it was found in Veliko Tarnovo. This paper contributes to its codicological (it reconstructs the correct order of folios) and language (East Bulgarian dialectal features) characteristics and also argues that it belongs to the family of Father Pantelejmon’s redaction but not to its branch of which Vlad Gladichov’s copy was a protograph. Therefore, terminus ante quem non is 1809 when Father Pantelejmon produced his manuscript.

Documentation and specialized articles are among the main means of improving stylistic classifications of the works belonging to an art museum’s heritage. A museum’s heritage is also dynamic, although most museums have a well-developed collection of works dating from before the 1990s. As the heritage is enriched, it must also be documented, and volumes of monographs on lesser-known artists are very useful in this process. This is also the case of the volume entitled „The Bednarik Family in Romanian Art” which is the subject of this review. Following the personal and professional career of the members of this family of artists, the Bednarik family monograph is a valuable document for the history of art in our country and a useful tool for specialists in art museums.

Through constantly-surprising breakthrough into the numinous space, the religious man follows his path towards the full experience of the sacred, thus positioning himself in a state of anticipation of the encounter with the numinous – therefore in a closeness toward the numinous as the Other. This closeness toward an imminence will in turn impose an interpretive reporting on both the context and the Other – therefore a positioning through an enunciation with the intention of preparing an understanding of these states. However, preparing this enunciation related to the future encounter with the numinous does not only mean building a space, but also orientation towards a sense. By orientation towards sense, it becomes necessary to build a statement that follows a dynamic composition of signs and senses through which the positioning – of oneself and towards the Other – becomes an enunciation with meaning.

THE LATIN-ROMANCE DIRECTION AND THE MODERNIZATION OF THE ROMANIAN LITERARY LANGUAGE IN THE 19TH CENTURY

The Latin-Romance direction and the modernization of the Romanian literary language in the 19th century are two essential aspects in the development of modern Romanian, reflecting both external influences and the need for modernization and standardization of the national language. The Latin-Romance direction was a cultural and linguistic movement that promoted a return to the Latin origins of the Romanian language, in the context of the development of national consciousness and Romanian cultural identity. This movement was supported by the intellectual and political elites of the time, who viewed Latinity as a foundation of Romanian national culture and as a link to Western Europe. The modernization of the language also involved the adoption of neological borrowings, with French being the most influential language in this process, mainly due to the cultural and political prestige of France during this period. Due to its cultural proximity and shared Latinity, Italian was another important source of borrowings, particularly in the fields of arts and literature.

THE MODERNISATION OF ROMANIAN GASTRONOMIC CULTURE IN THE 19TH CENTURY. CAȘCAVAL AND PARMEZAN: TWO GASTRONOMIC TERMS OF ITALIAN ORIGIN

In the evolution of Romanian civilization, the topic of gastronomy is not of particular interest among intellectuals, but, as Eugen Simion noted, writers – such as Costache Negruzzi and Mihail Kogălniceanu – were among the ones to ”display some sensitivity to what is called the gourmet discourse.” In this context, it is worth mentioning that Costache Negruzzi’s library included ”The Physiology of Taste”, written by Brillat – Savarin, whom Honoré de Balzac considered one of the great prose writers. Although gastronomy was not a fundamental dimension of his work, Kogălniceanu’s sensitivity to gastronomy is evident in many of his writings – elements of culinary art were incorporated both into his own lifestyle and the lives of his characters – and throughout his correspondence. In doing so, Kogălniceanu not only shaped the historical physiognomy of his era but also highlighted the refinement and good taste of certain social classes in mid-19th century Moldova.
