Карактеристике српског гејмерског дискурса

Карактеристике српског гејмерског дискурса

Author(s): Milan Todorović / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 14/2016

In this paper we studied the influence of the English language on the discourse of people in the area of video games. In the first part of the paper we introduced the lexicological and sociolinguistic terminology, which is necessary to understand and fully appreciate the characteristics of the gamer discourse. Additionally, we scrutinised the status of the English language as a lingua franca. We gathered the corpus by observing a group of gamers who communicate with each other over Facebook. Furthermore, we gave a survey to the aforementioned group. Results indicate an overwhelmingly positive attitude towards the use of the English language in combination with Serbian when the subject of video games is raised.

Author(s): Tetiana Osipova / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 02/2019

The article deals with the actualization of the study methodology of the nonverbal communication (NC) national parameters, verbalized by means of phraseological units (PhU) in Ukrainian, Polish, Russian ethnoses as these that have common eastern Slavic roots. The use of the comparative contrastive method of analysis facilitated the process of revealing the pragmatic mechanisms of the communicative senses of phraseological units with the non-verbal components.

Osobliwości idiolektu przedstawiciela średniego pokolenia staroobrzędowców regionu suwalsko-augustowskiego

Author(s): Magdalena Grupa / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2017

The Old Believers appeared on the territory of contemporary Poland in the second half of the 18th century. Back then they lived in isolation, therefore in the 20th century the intensification of contacts with Polish linguistic-cultural surroundings occurred. Assimilative processes sped up after the World War II. A little bit later differences in the speech of individual generations started to develop, which became very clear in the 21st century. Competence of the younger generations in the Russian dialect is more and more limited, the youngest community representatives are displaying tendencies of the linguistic change. The informer M-1977, whose idiolect has been the subject of analysis, is the representative of the youngest members of middle-age generation. The informer uses the Russian local dialect and Polish language on the level of the elaborated code and because of the preserved dialectal features, stylistic richness and the productivity in borrowing the lexis and the phraseology, he may be considered as an outstanding personality in his community.

Metafore istine u srpskom jeziku

Metafore istine u srpskom jeziku

Author(s): Jovana Jovanović / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 50/2019

This paper discusses the conceptualization of the abstract notion lexicalized as truth in order to establish the conceptual metaphors as mechanisms of comprehension. The research rests on the postulates of the conceptual method, one of the crucial tools for examining meanings in cognitive linguistics. The research is being conducted on the Corpus of contemporary Serbian (SrpKor), from which three hundred different examples of a contextualized lexeme will be extracted, and the functional affiliation of the selected examples will be observed. A statistical analysis will be conducted, which involves insight into the frequency of the conceptual metaphorsʼ source domains. Finally, the elements in the conceptualization of this abstract notion which reveal cultural peculiarities of native speakers will be analyzed.

Адвербијални фразеологизми са структуром фонетске ријечи у дјелима А. П. Чехова

Author(s): Marija Paunović / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 10/2014

This paper analyses adverbial phraseologisms of the phonetic word structure featuring two closely related Slavic languages. With regard to the basic corpus used, there are excerpts from original works in Russian by A. P. Chekhov and their respective translations into Serbian, with extensions in the form of several lexicographic sources. In this respect, the paper aims at comparing adverbial phraseologisms in both languages from the structural-semantic aspect, whereby special attention is paid to the issue of the status of adverbial structures in them, with reference to the case.

Номинативне реченице у руском језику на материјалу пословица (и њихови еквиваленти у српском језику)

Author(s): Milica Šević / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 9/2014

In the paper, the author deals with nominal sentences in Russian and their structure observed within the corpus of proverbs. The main corpus material are examples from Serbo-Croatian – Russian Paremiological Dictionary by J.Z., and this material is extended by the examples from the collection of Proverbs of Russian People by V.I. and the collection of Serbian Folk Proverbs by V. S. Karadzic. The aim of the paper is to explain nominal sentences in Russian from the aspects of structure and semantics within the proverbs, present those sentences that are similar to nominal sentences in form, yet not the real simple sentences, and then focus the attention on the issue of whether the nominal sentence is simple or not.

Могућности превођења лакуна (на материјалу руског и српског језика)

Могућности превођења лакуна (на материјалу руског и српског језика)

Author(s): Violeta P. Džonić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 8/2013

Taking as a starting point the fact that a lacuna is a specific linguistic phenomenon that many researchers have been interested in, mainly for its basic lexical aspect as well as its phraseological-paremiological, stylistic and lexicographic aspects, we would especially like to emphasize the problems in translation that it causes as such when related or non-related languages are in contact. As a result, there is the need for thorough analysis of translation procedures for translating a lacuna, the overview of which we have tried to compose relying on already existing methods in translation, through the prism of Russian and Serbian linguistic literature.

Властите именице као лакуне на плану руског језика и проблем њиховог превођења на српски језик

Author(s): Violeta P. Džonić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 5/2012

Taking as a starting point the fact that the lacuna has occupied the attention of researchers not only from the basic lexical aspect, but also from that of word-formation, morpho-syntactic, phraseologico-paroemiologic and stylistic, as well as in terms of lexicographic and translational problems created in the contact of both related and non-related languages, the author claims that the issue of proper names manifested as a lacuna also demands a thorough linguistic analysis, which is at the core of this paper dealing with the lacuna within the range of Serbian and Russian language respectively. The cultural-historical background and socio-traditional specificity of the lacuna are viewed through the prism of proper nouns in contemporary Russian language (bearing in mind the problems of transposing them into contemporary Serbian language). The analysis is done on proper nouns and toponyms only, with other noun groups being discussed in general.

Устойчивые сравнения в языке спортивного дискурса: русско-украинские параллели

Author(s): Aleksndr Viktorovich Savchenko / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1/2019

Nowadays, sports play an important role in the world, both from the pure competitive (even emulative) and political point of view. The influence of sports is also traced here at the linguistic level: many words and expressions from the field of sports penetrate the language but, on the other hand, the sphere of sports itself becomes a fertile ground for the emergence of new expressive words and idioms having different stylistic and expressive colours that can perform various pragmatic functions. In the language of sports, lexical units often acquire a new meaning related to sports; in some cases, the meanings of already existing metaphorical phraseological models are actualized. The paper is devoted to the problem of the status and description of one of the types of phraseological units, i.e. stable comparisons, which are used in the sphere of sports or sports discourse in modern Russian and Ukrainian languages. On the one hand, these units have their origins in sports slang as well as in mass media language and also come from common phraseology and other discourses. On the other hand, such units have not only a high expressive level but they are often used as picturesque and metaphorical means in other discourses, e.g. political, social, or economic. Such expressions are nowadays very popular and commonly used both in spoken language (speech) and in mass media language. Stable comparisons are, in fact, a universally figurative and expressive means of language which can be used in any situation, context, and in any pragmatic field of language use. The sphere of sports is not an exception, where such language units fulfil various functions both in the language of sports journalism (oral reportages, articles on sports, internet communication and discussions in internet forums specializing in sports) and in the speech of the athletes themselves. This paper discusses some of the most commonly used stable comparisons in the sphere of sports (i.e. sports discourse) both in Russian and Ukrainian languages. The metaphorical models of such units are examined from the point of view of Russian–Ukrainian language convergence. It can be stated that the language of modern Russian sports journalism can be seen today to a certain extent as a possible (or potential) prototype for the development of Ukrainian-language sports discourse. Generally speaking, live contacts in interdiscourse sports communication, including the language of sports journalism, however, are still ongoing and active language interaction at the level of vocabulary and phraseology remains one of the most effective means of enriching the vocabulary of the national language.

Author(s): Tamara Janevska / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 71/2020

The aim of this research is to perform the analysis of idioms containing the lexeme water in Serbian and English language. The goal was to confirm whether, and to what degree, these two languages show similarity in the lexical sense and to identify possible subtle differences in meaning that certain varieties of an idiom give rise to, which we sought to discover by conducting the semantic analysis of the examples extracted from the dictionaries. The research concluded that there are no major differences in the two languages regarding the semantic meaning overall, since we find the same categories into which these idioms can be classified. Regarding the varieties, differences are noticed only in a small number of Serbian idioms.

Топонимни компоненти в номиналните колокации във фразеологията на български, сърбохърватски и чешки език

Author(s): Pavel Krejčí / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 01/2021

This text presents onyms, as well as the toponyms as components in Bulgarian, Serbo-Croat and Czech phrasemes. Toponyms are not the most common onyms among phraseological units. Perhaps that is why they remain a bit on the margins of research interest (compared to anthroponyms, for example). The phraseological units with a toponymic component which we collected using the phraseological dictionaries of the above-mentioned languages of view may be classified as comparisons, syntagms (collocations) and (poly)sentences from a formal perspective. Our focus in this article was on nominal collocations and their classification. From the point of view of the syntactic structure, we divided the collected phrasemes into six groups. We collected most examples in groups with syntactic structure Adj + TOP (e.g.: Bulg. tamna Indiya) and Subst + prep + TOP (e.g.: S-Cr. ujak iz Amerike).

Towards the automatic detection and identification of English puns

Towards the automatic detection and identification of English puns

Author(s): Tristan Miller,Mladen Turković / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2016

Lexical polysemy, a fundamental characteristic of all human languages, has long been regarded as a major challenge to machine translation, human–computer interaction, and other applications of computational natural language processing (NLP). Traditional approaches to automatic word sense disambiguation (WSD) rest on the assumption that there exists a single, unambiguous communicative intention underlying every word in a document. However, writers sometimes intend for a word to be interpreted as simultaneously carrying multiple distinct meanings. This deliberate use of lexical ambiguity — i.e. punning — is a particularly common source of humour, and therefore has important implications for how NLP systems process documents and interact with users. In this paper we make a case for research into computational methods for the detection of puns in running text and for the isolation of the intended meanings. We discuss the challenges involved in adapting principles and techniques from WSD to humorously ambiguous text, and outline our plans for evaluating WSD-inspired systems in a dedicated pun identification task. We describe the compilation of a large manually annotated corpus of puns and present an analysis of its properties. While our work is principally concerned with simple puns which are monolexemic and homographic (i.e. exploiting single words which have different meanings but are spelled identically), we touch on the challenges involved in processing other types.

Latvians’, Latgalians’ and Russians’ Paremias about Life

Latvians’, Latgalians’ and Russians’ Paremias about Life

Author(s): Jelena Korolova,Oksana Kovzele / Language(s): English Issue: 12(41)/2019

The paper presents the analysis of 95 Latgalian and Russian paremias (proverbs, sayings, comparisons, and idioms), the bulk of which are proverbs. The entire corpus of the Russian paremias analysed contains more than 7,000 units. All of them were recorded by Jeļena Koroļova in the period 1977–2018 from the Old Believers of Latgale (they appeared in Latgale after the Church Schism of 1666) and in the period 1970–2015 – from the Orthodox living in Pytalovo (that territory was part of the first Latvian Republic from the 1920s to the 1940s). In order to compare them with Latvian proverbs, folklore collections, phraseological dictionaries, the dictionary compiled by Bernadeta Opincāne, as well as works of the Latvian folklorist Elza Kokare have been used. Modern Latgalian proverbs have been collected in recent years by Oksana Kovzele. In the research development, the techniques of comparative paremiology have been used to determine the existence of the two nations’ traditions in the comparative aspect. Paremias, proverbs above all, reflect the interaction of cultures and languages in the religious, national and regional aspects. The interaction of cultures in the sphere of the existence of paremias is of a two-sided nature. Borrowed proverbs testify to the fact that culture is a unifying factor for different ethnic groups living in the same state. The origins of popular conceptions of philosophical understanding of life should be sought either in Christianity or in the mythological views of ancient people.

Między biedą a bogactwem na Podhalu – leksyka dotycząca warunków bytowych człowieka na podstawie tekstów gwarowych

Author(s): Ewa Sikora / Language(s): Polish Issue: 20/2021

This article attempts to answer the question of which lexical units belong to the semantic field of poverty and wealth in the Podhale dialect. The material basis of the study are the dialectal texts, mainly the memoirs of Podhale Gorals, but also some pieces of recollective literature, and the folk tales. The analysis of the amassed material indicated the lexemes and phrasemes, both belonging to the general Polish language, and characteristic of the Podhale dialect. From the analysis of the contexts conclusions can be drawn as to valuing people in a rural community based on the amount of their property. In language it is manifested by the words with semantic components related not only to the material status, but also the social role.

O technikach tłumaczenia nazw obcych w XVII-wiecznej publicystyce rosyjskiej

Author(s): Dorota Głuszak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 175/2021

The following paper presents techniques that arise in translating nouns of foreign origin in Russian opinion journalism. Translational texts published under the common name of Vesti-Kuranty served as the source. The material for analysis was extracted from all available editions of the manuscripts produced in 1600–1670. The article aims to present selected techniques used by 17th century translators that were meant to serve as prompts for understanding words unknown in Russian at that time and demonstrate different translation solutions aimed at introducing foreign phrases and values.

Административный восторг: крылатое слово Достоевского как средство оценки в тексте СМИ

Author(s): Jelena Jegorowa / Language(s): Russian Issue: 169/2020

The given paper is dedicated to the analysis of the word combination “administrative delight,” which was firstly used by F. Dostoevsky in his novel Demons to describe the bureaucratic arbitrariness, and later on became a figure of speech. By considering the examples of the usage of the mentioned stylistic device in Russian, Ukrainian and Polish mass media, the context extension and the change of semantics were pointed out by the author of the paper. The undertaken research leads to the conclusion about the universality and the convincing factor of the viability of the figure of speech created by F. Dostoevsky.
