New Challenges in Children’s Illustration in Portugal: Intertextuality and Multimodality

New Challenges in Children’s Illustration in Portugal: Intertextuality and Multimodality

Author(s): Carina Rodrigues / Language(s): English Issue: 02/2022

The aim of this paper is to reflect on some of the current trends in Portuguese illustration for children, focusing on an intertextual reading of the picturebooks written and illustrated by Manuela Bacelar, as a precursor in the creation of this kind of book in Portugal. Based on the discursive interdependence of text and illustrations, stylistic and technical-narrative procedures are observed, in necessary articulation with the visual/graphic and material/peritextual aspects. The potential of these aspects is highlighted in the composition of the work and in the construction of its multiple semiosis. The interdependence of text and illustrations poses specific requirements in the process of reading and has an impact on the formation of competent and autonomous readers. Relying on modern literary currents to be found in a postmodernist aesthetic, this paper examines the corpus, from both a technical and compositional point of view, seeking to investigate some of the traits and formal rhetorical, stylistic and thematic resources that distinguish the work of this awarded artist.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE KOREAN POETIC DRAMA AND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE POETIC DRAMA MOVEMENT

DEVELOPMENT OF THE KOREAN POETIC DRAMA AND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE POETIC DRAMA MOVEMENT

Author(s): Hyeon-Jeong Lee / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

This paper deals with the definition and characteristics of poetic drama, and attempts to clarify the significance of poetic drama works during the time when the poetic drama movement took place. Unlike drama-poetry or plays, poetic drama is an independent art genre. It presents artistic vision through the conflict of poetics and dramas. The unity of poetic and dramatic things, which is facilitated through music, internal necessity, stage image, sound effect, and visual auditory indication, poetic drama is a part of complex art. The entire work functions as a poem and must be realized on the stage. For Choi Il-soo, in order to develop the characteristics of these poetry plays, the innatrhythm of the free verse should be embodied within these plays. He accepted Eliot’s theory and tried to establish the position that Western poetic drama works and theories are unique to Korea. This deepening perception of theory led to a poetic drama movement with the creators. In this paper, we classify its characteristics by focusing on approximately 18 poetic drama works. From 1920 to 1999, 18 representative works were classified, focusing on the completeness of the works and the remarkable artists. The characteristics of works can largely be divided into historical, narrative, reality, and philosophy. The meaning of this classification can serve as an opportunity for poetic dramas to advance into more diverse topics or forms. The poetic drama movement was dominated by critics and poets with the aim of pursuing independent Korean art works, and although it failed in performance and popularization, it was an achievement of the times to give a glimpse into the possibility of poetic drama. Poetic drama can act as a new element in the genre of poetry and drama that are losing original literary character, and there is a need to revive in Korean literature.

Poeta ridens. O wierszach Józefa Barana

Author(s): Anna Legeżyńska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 14/2021

The article is dedicated to the memory of prof. Bożena Chrząstowska as a researcher appreciating and popularizing contemporary poetry at school. One of the people appreciated by her was Józef Baran (born 1947). His most recent volume entitled Before Departure refers to the popularity of the poetry of the “middle”, derived from Gałczyński’s tradition, accessible to the reader and, at the same time, original. The collection Before Departure has the character of a lyrical autobiography, it also brings reflections on the meaning of human existence. In this volume, the elegiac convention is mixed with self-irony and humor. The poet writes about transience as a very personal, but also a universal experience, inscribed in the harmony of being.

McLudzie i ich drapieżniki, czylio wampirach zmieniających dietę

Author(s): Agnieszka Izdebska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 31/2022

The text is an attempt to demonstrate how stories about vampires—ubiquitous in contemporary culture—fit into an accessible version of the issues raised within animal studies. Since the character of the vampire is one of those elements of the Gothic canon that has undergone a dizzying transformation ( there seems to be more differences than shared features between Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight heroes ), the article examines the reasons for such a radical change in our stories about fictitious creatures that we have placed above us in the food chain.Jim Jarmusch’s film Only Lovers Left Alive has been analysed in more detail in the article; however, other ( apart from the already mentioned ) “canonical” texts are mentioned, such as Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice, and some less known ones, including Suzy McKee-Charnas’ The Vampire Tapestry or Truth by Terry Pratchett.

Saga „Zmierzch”, Internet i zmiana kulturowa. Uwagi z zakresu socjologii recepcji literackiej

Author(s): Monika Gnieciak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 13/2022

In her article, Monika Gnieciak analyses the impact of the publication of the Twilight saga on the functioning of contemporary literary life. The controversial popularity of the saga, both among its fans and anti-fans, combined with the development of social networking sites at the time of its publication, resulted in a cultural change which caused the mechanisms of literary communication to undergo a permanent transformation. At the same time, the mass readership of Stephenie Meyer’s fiction brought about a change in the status of the young adult genre, which from a marginal literary product has developed into one of the most vibrant segments of the current publishing market.

Konverents Eesti teadusillustratsiooni uurimisest

Author(s): Kristiina Tiideberg / Language(s): Estonian Issue: 01+02/2023

In October 2022, the exhibition "Art or Science" opened in the Kumu Art Museum, born from the joint work of three institutions, the Estonian Art Museum, the Estonian Academy of Arts and the Museum of the University of Tartu, whose curators the author of this article had the pleasure of being a part of. While in the Western world there are long traditions in the study of the relationship between art and science, in Estonia this can be considered the first major research and exhibition project that takes a closer look at the older scientific drawings of Estonia and Baltic Germany. For the Kumu Art Museum, it was also a conceptual continuation of several previous exhibitions related to visual culture studies, which dealt with, for example, the role of photography ("Image explosion", 2019), historical images ("History in a picture - a picture in history", 2018) and colonial themes ("The conqueror's gaze", 2019). . Art or Science continues this journey by exploring and interpreting scientific drawings and illustrations, with a primary focus on natural and medical sciences in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Recent history and its untold stories in open-air museums

Recent history and its untold stories in open-air museums

Author(s): Paulina Vituščanka / Language(s): English Issue: 01+02/2023

Conference Recent history and its untold stories in open-air museums, Tallinn, 19–21 October 2022. On 19-21 October 2022, the Open Air Museum in Tallinn organised a conference to celebrate its 65th birthday. Open air museum professionals from the region came to discuss the best practices and issues in their work. The two-day conference included representatives from museums in Denmark, Hungary, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The conference revolved around the topics of changes and novel approaches in open air museums, best practices and challenges. All the museums represented in the conference draw on the Skansen tradition; yet, as the conference reports show, there is a new approach to this tradition going on: displaying a village landscape not only visually, well known to all of us, but also using the method of habitat recreation to include diverse groups and time frames, which allows museums to touch upon marginalised topics and get closer to their communities. The conference was also inspired by the opening of the award-winning Kolkhoz house exhibition: a good illustration of the effort to shed light on the untold stories of everyday life.

İHAP HULUSİ GÖREY’İN AFİŞLERİNDE SANATSAL DİL ve ANLATIM

İHAP HULUSİ GÖREY’İN AFİŞLERİNDE SANATSAL DİL ve ANLATIM

Author(s): Serpil KAZANCI YILMAZ / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 58/2023

The development of poster art in our country has been in parallel with the development of graphic arts. It started with the establishment of the printing house by Sait Çelebi and İbrahim Müteferrika in the last periods of the Ottoman Empire. The most important factor that distinguishes İhap Hulusi Görey, an important contemporary of Turkish poster art, from his contemporaries is the artistic language and expression style he used in his posters. In his art, there are effects of staining, illustration and linear language. In his posters, he used a special watercolor technique consisting mainly of blotchy forms and harsh shadows. In Görey's art, figures and forms are illustrated in a minimal tone and color scale, and the message to be conveyed with a blotchy effect turns into a powerful communication tool. In this respect, it transforms watercolor, which is a traditional painting technique, into a graphic material that conveys direct messages. A literature review was made in the research, and printed publications related to the subject were used. In terms of adding depth to the research and illuminating our subject, the qualitative research method, which has come from the past to the present is included. In addition, a case study was conducted to determine the relationship between the subject and the related events.

GÖSTERİ SANATLARININ OLUŞUMUNDA VİYANA PİYANO OKULUNUN ROLÜ

Author(s): Rəna CƏFƏROVA / Language(s): Azerbaijani Issue: 58/2023

The article deals with the close connection of piano playing culture with the development in the history of musical culture in Western Europe. During this period, the formation of trends in mass performance, the development of musical forms and genres, achievements in musical notation also led to a considerable stage in the field of piano performance. In subsequent periods, a new attitude to art brought a new breath to the performing arts. As a result of the formation of the urban bourgeoisie, the widespread dissemination of Renaissance ideas, the attitude to academic music has radically changed, and new genres and new means of expression appeared in music, which paved the way for the complete liberation of musical culture from church control in the subsequent period. National piano culture is a multifaceted concept. This concept includes the concert activity of performers, the level of musical and pedagogical activity of different countries, the development of methodological ideas, the state of piano classes in the music educational system, the volume of piano literature, the number of piano instruments etc. Thus, the art of piano performing, one of the main components of the piano school, contains several factors. Mastering the piano performing comprehensively trains a person, expands his creative possibilities, develops his imagination and thinking, artistic abilities, intellectual level and forms new universal abilities.

“Let the Sirens Roar”: The Women’s Protests in Poland and the Artistic Response to the Backlash

Author(s): Małgorzata Stępnik / Language(s): English Issue: 22/2022

The ruling of the Constitutional Tribunal of 22 October 2020, which tightened the restrictions on reproductive rights in Poland and was adopted in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, sparked strong social opposition and massive demonstrations. The article focuses on artistic works accompanying these protests, providing a kind of visual commentary to them or, in other words, their visual “framework”. The discussion refers to the most characteristic iconographic materials, mainly posters, uploaded and shared by (mostly young) artists on their profiles on popular social media and specially created websites (such as Graphic Emergency). The content of this artistic “production” often refers to important moments in the recent history of Poland (the Solidarity movement), traditional symbols, and the imaginational sphere; however, to some extent, it also refers to the countercultural revolution of the late 1960s, especially to L’Atelier Populaire, established by students of Académie des Beaux Arts in Paris. The article proposes that the discussed posters be interpreted as a generational counterreply to the “backlash”, understood in accordance with the meaning given to that word by Susan Faludi in her classic 1991 study.

The paradoxical self: duality and ambiguity in the works and lives of Oscar Wilde and Morrissey

The paradoxical self: duality and ambiguity in the works and lives of Oscar Wilde and Morrissey

Author(s): Karolina Adamskich / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

Oscar Wilde’s and Morrissey’s lives seem to be full of contradictions. Their art constitutes a reaction against materialism, traditional lifestyle and social standards, as well as defence of individualism and freedom of thought. So far, their works have been analysed only from a very limited perspective of the tension between aesthetics and ethics. Nevertheless, it is worth mentioning that what prevails in their art is the state of ambivalence and ambiguity in relation to the issues connected with religion and morality, innocence and experience, life and death. This article aims at demonstrating multiplicity of personalities of the artists mentioned and ethical ambivalences of their works. Taken together, Wilde and Morrissey’s creative outputs present a clash between different spheres of life, the divided consciousness and the split between body and soul. Thus, the oscillation between opposite standpoints and values excluding each other is not only the result of the artists’ personal experience but it may symbolise the paradox and absurdity of the human existence as well.

Specyfika i miejsce eksponatów „prywatnych” w procesie narracyjnym — na przykładzie doświadczeń Domu Kuncewiczów w Kazimierzu Dolnym

Author(s): Monika Januszek-Surdacka / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2022

The Kuncewicz House — a part of the Vistula Museum in Kazimierz Dolny is a literary museum established in the former villa of Maria and Jerzy Kuncewicz. It is a very special place with unusual exhibits. The collection consists of objects collected by the Kuncewicz family. These are souvenirs, gifts, personal belongings, even Maria Kuncewiczowa’s wardrobe. Each exhibit is a unique, separate narrative trail for the museum staff. These exhibits are related to the Kuncewicz’s history, but also to the creators or donors of these objects (e.g. paintings furniture etc). However, the stories of some objects are often unknown. The museum staff reconstructs the narrative of the exhibits, and uses them not only to prepare popular science and educational texts enriching the knowledge of the Kuncewicz family and their friends, but also to discover facts about Kazimierz Dolny and the art colony existing in this town in the 20s. and 30s.
