Author(s): Haris Šarganović / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 1/2015

This article presents findings based on scientific methods of proof and descriptions which are related to efficient conducting of monetary policy. Primary goal of every state is to achieve better standards for its citizens, the best possible and most stable economic growth, the highest employment rate as well as stability. In order to reach those goals, states have to conduct monetary policy as an important form of economy politics and so achieve a stable market, economic stability, stable domestic currency and at the end the amount of money in circulation from which depens the realization of all the mentioned goals. However, it is necessary for monetary policy to be unique and led by independent central bank.

STAMBENE SUBVENCIJE U AUSTRIJI POVIJESNI RAZVOJ I KONCEPTI

Author(s): Eva Bauer / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 09/1994

Starting with a comparison of the Austrian system of housing promotion with those of other European countries, the article deals with the development of the present system. The description of the history of housing promotion in Austria goes back to the 19th century when public action in housing was very limited. The today's system of security of tenure was introduced during the Austrian monarchyat the end of world war I; the respective principles were transformed into a republican law in the 1920s. At that time promotion of housing construction via a special tax system was only performed by the city of Vienna. On a nation wide base housing promotion was founded in the years after the end of world war II, when a political consensus could be reached about its necessity.lnfunctionallinkagewith non-profit housing a system of public subsidization of housing construction - mainly via public loans and later on via operating subsidies in addition - was created. Public funds for housing promotion were and still are fed by a certain share of income and corporation tax as well as repayments for the pubfc loans. Public grants are not restricted to the rental sector but also go to owner occupied dwellings as well as homeowners.

Islamic financial institutions tend to no longer apply profit and loss sharing but more to revenue sharing. On the other hand, the Sharia economy aims to empower people to fulfill human needs based on Islamic values to achieve happiness in the world and end. Therefore, the focus of this paper is the application of Sharia principles in the sharia economy. The research method to answer the legal issue is normative legal research that is analyzed qualitatively. Sharia financial institutions are still unable to escape from their existence as business institutions for the main purpose of profiting. This is certainly far from the spirit of empowerment of people in the sharia economy. Islamic financial institutions should not be separated from the core of the sharia economy, namely the empowerment of people. Therefore, Sharia financial institutions must utilize social corporate responsibility to achieve the objectives of community empowerment

Author(s): Oksana Valion / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 2/2021

The paper analyzes the socio-economic policy of Belarus in the first half of the 1990s in the process of its transition to market economy, and highlights the peculiarities of the economic crisis in this period. The methodology of work is a set of scientific principles, general scientific and special historical methods, as well as interdisciplinary and comprehensive approaches to the historical discourse of socio-economic history of Belarus based on the integral use of sources. Scientific novelty. It is the first time this issue is considered in Ukrainian historiography. Conclusions. It is noted that Belarus had to go through a rather difficult path in the first half of the 1990s. It was caused by the transformational processes associated with the collapse of the USSR, the country's transition from a command-and-control system to market economic conditions, and took place within a structural economic crisis that affected all spheres of economic life. The market reforms of 1992–1994 (liberalization of economic life, privatization, support of entrepreneurship, development of competition) contributed to the formation of basic market mechanisms and institutions, but the Belarusian economy has failed to adapt to transitional market realities. At the same time, it was in the late 1980s and early 1990s that the historical preconditions were formed for the creation of the now commonly accepted Belarusian model of socio-economic development, which came into existence in the second half of the 1990s.

Romi u Stupniku: primjer demografskog i socioekonomskog položaja Roma uoči Drugoga svjetskog rata

Romi u Stupniku: primjer demografskog i socioekonomskog položaja Roma uoči Drugoga svjetskog rata

Author(s): Alen Tahiri / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 1/2021

The paper analyses nine Roma families who lived in Stupnik Municipality; more precisely, in the villages of Žitarka and Razborišće, on the eve of World War II. The research draws from a questionnaire used by the municipal authorities in late August 1939 to survey and register the Roma men and women from those families, seeking to implement a policy of the Banovina authorities aimed at better controlling the migration of Roma people. Nowadays, these files are kept at the State Archives in Zagreb, in the holdings of the Administrative Municipality of Stupnik. The analysis of these data served as a basis for examining the demographic and socio-economic structure of individual Roma families in inter-war Croatia, more specifically, in the Banovina of Croatia. The first piece of data from the 1939 census of Stupnik Roma that can be analysed is their demographic structure. The average age of the total of 30 registered Roma was 26.9 years, which indicates a middle age structure. Roma parents were on average 35.2 years old, while the average age of their children was 16.4 years, which merely confirms their middle age structure. These data correspond to the age structure of Roma in other areas of inter-war Croatia, where approximately 44% of all Roma registered in the Sava Banovina in 1931 were between 20 and 59 years old. The family structure shows that the nine registered Roma families had an average of 3.5 members, while three families had no children. Almost all families consisted of a married couple with or without children, while only one family included a mother-in-law (husband›s mother). This file also reveals whether the Roma were legally married or lived in a “concubinage”, i.e. in an extramarital union. Half of the Roma couples were legally married, while the other half were unmarried. The issue of marriage legality is followed by the issue of their attitudes to religion, especially when it comes to the baptism of children. All Roma interviewed stated that they had been baptised, as well as their children, which suggests that the registered Roma from Stupnik were religious insofar as they and their children had been baptised, but the documents themselves provide no insight into their personal attitude toward religion. A review of the data from the Roma census enables an analysis of their economic position and migration routes. All registered Roma people stated that they were engaged in agriculture on small plots of land. When it comes to migration, it is important to point out that those Roma lived a sedentary lifestyle. Comparison between the birthplace of the registered Roma and the place of their residence in Stupnik municipality shows that they had been migrating only within the wider Zagreb area. In addition, data were collected on their plans to emigrate from their (Stupnik) municipality, with all registered Roma stating that they intended to stay in that area, which further underlines the high level of their social integration. The final question of the interviews with the Roma was related to military service. These data reveal that a part of the Roma served in the army during World War I, while the second part was declared unfit for the army, although some of them also took part in military operations during the war. The analysis of the above data leads to certain conclusions. In 1939, nine Roma families with a total of 27 members lived in Stupnik municipality. They were permanent residents of the villages of Žitarka and Razborišće. Their average age of 26 corresponds to the average age of registered Roma in the Sava Banovina. Most Roma families consisted of a mother and father with children, while only one of them included a mother-in-law. Half of the Roma partners were legally married, while the other half were unmarried or living in concubinage. It is interesting to note that all registered Roma had been baptised, which can be explained by a certain level of adaptation to the local environment. The analysis of the above data reveals that the majority of Roma households were engaged in agriculture, while a minor part were workers. The Stupnik authorities were particularly interested in where the Roma had immigrated from and whether they intended to stay or relocate. All registered Roma were born and lived near Stupnik municipality, mostly in the areas of Sv. Klara, Sv. Nedjelja and Samobor. The question concerning military service also reveals the attitude of the Roma towards state authorities. These data are diverse, too. While some stated that they had actively fought in World War I, others had been declared unfit. Further research into the history of the Stupnik Roma shows that the municipal authorities registered Roma twice in two years (in May 1940 and in July 1941). That was in line with the local provisions of official authorities for resolving the issue of relations with the Roma. Those Roma were also victims of the Ustasha genocidal policy of Roma extermination. In early June 1942, they were forcibly evicted and deported to the Jasenovac concentration camp, where they were killed. This historical demographic and socio-economic analysis of the Roma community in a certain area aims to contribute to a better understanding of the history of the Roma in Croatia.

THE IMPACT OF ECONOMIC CRISES ON LABOR MARKET BEHAVIOUR IN THE REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

THE IMPACT OF ECONOMIC CRISES ON LABOR MARKET BEHAVIOUR IN THE REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

Author(s): A. P Birca / Language(s): English Issue: 46/2021

The current approach treats the impact of economic crises on labour market behaviour in the Republic of Moldova. In this endeavour, negative effects of the economic crises from 2008 and 2020, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic which still continues to impact the economic development and the evolution of the labour market were analysed. In this context, the main economic indicators (GDP, the volume of industrial production, the volume of agricultural production, etc.) were considered, and more particularly their evolution during the pre and post crisis period. Furthermore, a series of indicators related to the labour market, as well as their manifestation during the economic crisis were examined. This allowed us to ascertain some distinctions regarding the indicators characterizing the labour market. Taking into account that the economic crisis from 2020, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has specific features, we were able to highlight certain aspects concerning the content and organization of the labour market.

Wizerunek starszych konsumentów – wstępne wyniki badań empirycznych studentów kierunków ekonomicznych

Author(s): Katarzyna Bałandynowicz-Panfil / Language(s): Polish Issue: 9/2020

The image of elderly changes much slower than the actual meaning of older people in societies. Highly rooted stereotypes persist in the general consciousness, what limits opportunities arising from the aging process in both social and economic dimensions. An example of this is the belief that the older consumers are less attractive to the market of goods and services. To verify this thesis, the results of the research on the image of older consumers among economic students were analysed. As future managers and people responsible for shaping a company’s market policy, students should have a properly shaped image of older consumers. Conclusions: (1) the stereotypical image of the older consumer among students is maintained, (2) still a high degree of discrepancy between the consciousness of the border age of older consumers and those depicted by their image and purchasing behaviour.

Consumer and Dietary Behaviour of Polish Silver Singles

Consumer and Dietary Behaviour of Polish Silver Singles

Author(s): Tomasz Zalega / Language(s): English Issue: 1 (87)/2020

Purpose: The goal of the study is to analyse food expenditure, dietary behaviour and the frequency of food purchases in Polish silver singles’ households as well as key factors affecting their decisions in this respect. Design/methodology: The analysis is based on a survey questionnaire administered between 1 February and 30 October 2018 in a sample of 2476 elderly people living alone in ten Polish cities of various populations and sizes. In accordance with the research assumptions, the sample included persons over 65 years of age who took independent consumer decisions in the market. This research method was chosen in view of the older age of respondents whose openness to new media often used in direct research is limited. Findings: The survey shows that the level of consumption of most food products depends on the disposable income of silver singles. While shopping for food, most single seniors pay attention to whether food is healthy, make sure that their diet is rich in vitamins and minerals, and that the products consumed are fresh and do not contain preservatives. Yet, they attach the greatest importance to the price and quality of food as well as numerous promotions offered by shops whereas they care less about fashion and the wish to stand out. Research limitations/implications: Given the limited financial capacity, the study of consumer and dietary behaviour of silver singles was confined to a survey conducted in the biggest Polish cities. It was not possible to carry out research among single seniors living in rural areas. Following the conclusions made, they should not be treated as representative of the population of Polish silver singles. They only provide some insight into actual consumer and dietary behaviours of this consumer segment. Originality/value: This article is one of few publications in Poland that seek to provide some insight into consumer and dietary behaviour of Polish silver singles.

Impact of Life Annuity as Payment Option on Nigerian Pension Funds

Impact of Life Annuity as Payment Option on Nigerian Pension Funds

Author(s): Halimah Sani Sambo,Shehu Jafaru Salisu / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

The contributory pension scheme (CPS) urshered in 2004 a new generation of pension management in Nigeria. This scheme came forward with three options for the retiree to choose as to how he wants his/her pension funds to be paid according to PRA 2014. The options are lumpsum, programmed withdrawals and life annuity. However, the impact of selecting life annuity that provides protection against longevity risk is what has not been investigated in Nigeria. Using pension fund contribution and the explanatory variables. The study utilized the Smart Partial Least Squares (PLS) using time series data for sampled Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs). Results revealed that the coefficient of life annuity significantly affects the pension funds contributions. This suggests withdrawal from the scheme is continuous until the retiree dies. Therefore. Leaving no precise exist boundary and as such making the fund volatile. The paper recommends PFAs should increase their investment in risky assets to give them the opportunity of reaping more returns on pension contribution. It further recommends appropriate investment portfolio mix on behalf of retirees to hedge against risk of eroding the long-term funds since life annuities cannot be bequested.

Analysis of socio-economic spatial structure of urban agglomeration in China based on spatial gradient and clustering

Analysis of socio-economic spatial structure of urban agglomeration in China based on spatial gradient and clustering

Author(s): Li He,Jian'ge Tao,Ping Meng,Dan Chen,Meng Yan,Laszlo Vasa / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2021

Research background: Previous studies on the economic and social development of urban agglomerations mostly focus on a single primacy comparative analysis and efficiency evaluation. Spatial structure differentiation is an important feature of urban agglomeration. The lack of economic and social analysis on the spatial structure makes it impossible to determine the development positioning of each city in the urban agglomeration, which affects the sustainable economic development ability of these areas. Purpose of the article: The objective of the article is to analyze the spatial development law and experience of urban agglomeration, this study explores the practice of economic and population spatial structure of city areas in China. For this purpose, CPUA and its central city Zhengzhou was taken as an example, the spatial gradient structure of example was analyzed. Methods: Using economic and population data of 32 cities in this region, growth pole theory, and pole-axis theory, the economic and population spatial structure of urban agglomeration, the spatial gradient structure of central cities in urban agglomerations were analyzed with the method of cluster about radiation index. Findings & value added: (1) In the process of the formation of CPUA, the geographical spatial pattern plays a decisive role in economic and social development. This is an experience from developing countries. (2) CPUA presents a gradient development pattern with Zhengzhou as the center, and economic and social development gradually radiates to the metropolitan area, the core development area, and the character development demonstration area. (3) The economic and social gradients of Zhengzhou, the central city, present the hierarchy rules and characteristics which are driven by the Beijing-Guangzhou-Railway axis and the Longhai-Railway axis. (4) The central city of Zhengzhou still presents insufficient primacy in regional development, which shows that Zhengzhou accounts for 6% of the population of the Central Plains Economic Zone and 14% of GDP, and insufficient agglomeration. Different countries at different stages of economic development have different urban agglomeration development models. The conclusions from China provide new decision-making ideas and methods for spatial structure research and development strategy analysis of urban agglomerations.

Autoregressive Distributed Lag Modeling of the Effects of Some Macroeconomic Variables on Economic Growth in Nigeria

Autoregressive Distributed Lag Modeling of the Effects of Some Macroeconomic Variables on Economic Growth in Nigeria

Author(s): Monday Osagie Adenomon,Rotimi Olalekan Ojo / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

Research background: The relationship between inflation rate, unemployment rate, interest rate and real gross domestic product per capita in Nigeria. However, there seems to be a short-run or long-run relationship among the macroeconomic variables. Purpose: This study investigated the long and short run impacts of the inflation rate, unemployment rate and interest rate on real gross domestic product per capita (RGDPPC) (proxy for economic growth). Research methodology: This study applied a linear dynamic model Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) modeling technique to analyze the short-run dynamics and long-run relationship of economic growth in Nigeria over the sample period between 1984 and 2017 using annual secondary data extracted from the World Bank Development Indicators Report. Results: The empirical results showed that there was a long-run relationship between the inflation rate, unemployment rate and interest rate on real gross domestic product per capita (proxy for economic growth) in Nigeria. The results further revealed that only the unemployment rate had a significant positive impact on real gross domestic product per capita in the long-run and the inflation rate had a significant negative impact on real gross domestic product per capita in the short-run. Novelty: Therefore, the study concluded that the unemployment rate and inflation rate proved to have significant impacts on economic growth in the long-run and short-run respectively. The formulation of policies to reduce unemployment through the adoption of a labour concentrated technique of production, entrepreneurship development and policy to keep the inflation rate a single digit.

The Dilemmas of Public Vs. Private Goods Discounting for Long-Term Investment Appraisal: the Puzzle of Citizen and Consumer Approaches to Valuation

The Dilemmas of Public Vs. Private Goods Discounting for Long-Term Investment Appraisal: the Puzzle of Citizen and Consumer Approaches to Valuation

Author(s): Monika Foltyn-Zarychta / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

Research background: An investment appraisal applies a single discount rate across all effects. However, this may be insufficient for heterogenous environmental impacts, mixing private and public goods as well as use and non-use values, where individuals may have multiple intertemporal preferences due to their duality to act as consumer or citizen. Purpose: The paper aims at identifying the scope of discrepancies in the level of discount rate for public and private as well as use-and non-use investment gains. Research methodology: The contingent valuation method is used to elicit stated discount rates for 2 hypothetical investments: environmental or financial gains to distinguish between public and private domain accompanied by two time-frames: short (use values) and long (non-use values). Results: The discount rate for the environment is lower than for money. It is also lower for the long-term horizon in comparison with the short-term perspective. The discrepancies are observed also for explanatory variables in respect to a socio-economic profile and attitude characteristics. Novelty: The paper adds to the discussion on valuation discrepancies between self-interested consumers and socially oriented citizens. The scarcity of previous research examining discount rates for public/private goods as well as the short/long-time horizon make the results relevant for public policy dealing with climate change and environmental protection, providing an insight into individual intertemporal preferences.

Consumers Engagement Toward Food Brands – The Case of Dairy Products

Consumers Engagement Toward Food Brands – The Case of Dairy Products

Author(s): Michał Gazdecki,Elżbieta Goryńska-Goldmann / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

Research background: As food markets continue to develop the role and position of food consumers evolve as well. Food producers redefine their market strategies and focus on creating loyalty, building good contacts and consumers’ engagement towards brands. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to analyze the engagement of consumers towards selected food brands in the category of dairy desserts. Research methodology: The paper was prepared and based on the data collected in the survey among 200 respondents. The research subjects were consumers who declared the consumption of milk based desserts and the object of analyses was consumers’ brand engagement considered at the behavioral level. Results: Consumers with the opportunity to interact with a brand increase their propensity to recommend, which is a necessary condition for creating a reference market. As for the smaller companies, gaining sales growth through distribution and promotional activities may be difficult due to budget constraints, actions aimed at creating a reference market may be more effective. Novelty: Although the issue of consumer engagement is an important area of scientific work, there is less interest in this field in the context of food markets. This paper provides additional knowledge about the context of food market products, which should be continued in further research. Based on our results, marketing strategies, mainly for a SME’s, can be developed.

The Role of Technology in Building a Competitive Advantage – Programmatic Buying and its Impact on the Competitiveness of an Organization

The Role of Technology in Building a Competitive Advantage – Programmatic Buying and its Impact on the Competitiveness of an Organization

Author(s): Robert Kozielski,Nikodem Sarna / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

Research background: Recent years have brought a real explosion of new tools and methods of conducting market activities based on new technologies. Solutions based on new technologies carry great development potential for an organization. There is a belief that new technologies – in particular, programmatic buying (analyzed in this article) – also impact an organization’s ability to compete. Programmatic buying (PB) is a tool but also a new model of sales and purchase of advertising, under which the current package approach (traditional) has been replaced by a fully automated individualized approach. Purpose: The aim of the article is to assess the impact of technology on an organization’s ability to compete with the example of PB. Research methodology: The empirical basis is both qualitative and quantitative research conducted in 2018–2019. Results: The empirical material provides the basis for rejecting the main research hypothesis which claims that the usage of PB increases the effectiveness and efficiency of advertising and thanks to this on a companies’ ability to compete. PB has a positive impact only on the effectiveness and efficiency of graphic ads. The same relation was not observed in terms of video ads. Nevertheless the results are not clear. It is recommended to deepen the analysis. Novelty: Due to the fact that programmatic buying is a relatively new technologic solution there is no research that proves its impact on the marketing activities efficiency as well as its role in building the competitive advantage of a company, especially on the Polish or European market. This research starts the discussion of the role of PB in companies’ market activities and fits in the dispute of the significance of new technologies.

The Fears of Elderly People in the Process of Purchasing Food Products

The Fears of Elderly People in the Process of Purchasing Food Products

Author(s): Magdalena Olejniczak,Tomasz Olejniczak / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

Research background: The growing segment of elderly consumers implies the need to permanently explore the needs and expectations of older people in relation to the offer of food products. This is because, as the research results show, the households of the elderly are characterized by the different fulfillment of needs compared to others. Purpose: The survey conducted among people over 60 in 2019 was aimed at determining the selected concerns of senior consumers related to the safety of food products. Research methodology: The research among people over 60 years of age was conducted in the Wielkopolska region (of Poland) in 2019 on a sample of 373 people. The respondents were selected using the quota selection method. Results: The vast majority of seniors point to a variety of concerns about the safety of food products. This is surprising, as the respondents equally often emphasize that food in Poland is safe. Novelty: The observations are an important implication for producers or commercial agents – their task is to prepare messages to confirm that the food products offered meet the quality requirements. The process of educating older people can be made difficult – primarily through their well-established (over the years) nutritional practices related to the purchase and consumption of those products that are essential for life.

The Functioning of Urban Hotels in the Natural Environment

The Functioning of Urban Hotels in the Natural Environment

Author(s): Daniel Puciato / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

Research background: There are numerous interactions between the natural environment and a hotel company. On the one hand, the natural environment affects the hotel; on the other hand, the hotel has a significant impact on the environment. Dynamic changes in the natural environment and their effects on the functioning of hotels make it important to assess the strength and directions and to identify the conditions and consequences of these mutual interactions. Purpose: The paper aims to assess interactions taking place between the natural environment and hotels located in Wroclaw, Poland. Research methodology: The main research method was a diagnostic questionnaire survey. The study was carried out 2017 among the owners or managers of 24 hotels from Wrocław. Chi-squared tests were conducted and Cramer’s V measures of association were calculated. The level of statistical significance was set at ex ante α = 0.05. Results: In the opinion of the highest percentage of respondents, interactions between the natural environment and Wroclaw hotels are of low strength and are neutral. The hotel type was associated with the strength of the environmental impact on the hotel. In the Wrocław hotels that were researched there were significant correlations between the strength of the hotel’s impact on the natural environment, hotel specific location, and quality standard (hotel rating). Novelty: Potential correlations between the strength and directions of interactions between hotels, as well as between the natural environment and organizational and functional characteristics of urban hotels have not been researched before.

Proposed Research on the Relationships Between Innovation Competitiveness and Export Competitiveness in Central and Eastern European Countries

Author(s): Marcin Salamaga / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

Research background: In the contemporary world, innovations are the driving force of economic development and new products, designs, trademarks and creative projects are of key importance to everyday economic decisions. Both economic theories and empirical research concern relations between innovations and foreign trade. This article belongs to this research trend and is devoted to an analysis of relations between innovations and export competitiveness in selected Central and Eastern European countries. Purpose: The paper is aimed at assessing the impact of innovation competitiveness on export competitiveness in selected countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Research methodology: The paper contains an analysis with the use of standardised innovation competitiveness and export competitiveness indices. Countries and industry sectors are analysed in terms of the frequency of occurrence of these indices with various combinations of their signs. The impact of innovation competitiveness on export competitiveness has been tested using dynamic models of panel data. Results: The conducted research indicates that technological advantage usually has a considerable positive impact on the trade competitiveness of Central and Eastern European countries but the strength of the impact depends on the branch of industry. Generally, the influence of technological competitiveness on trade competitiveness is stronger in highly and moderately technologically advanced industries than in industries characterised by low technological advancement. Novelty: The evaluation of the influence of innovation competitiveness on export competitiveness in Central and Eastern European countries using standardised competitiveness indices and a dynamic model of panel data is an added value in the paper.

Research background: Foreign aid flows to Africa mostly the Low-Income Countries (LICs) have increased drastically since 2000. Increasing aid flows are expected to stimulate economic growth that can release resources towards enabling LICs to reduce aid dependency. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to discuss the dynamics of bilateral aid trends and patterns among 27 LICs in Africa during 2000–2017. The main question this study tries to answer is: how have aid sources, compositions and dependency changed in LICs? Research methodology: The study employs a descriptive analysis technique to analyses bilateral aid flows to LICs in Africa from 50 donors during 2000–2017. Results: Total net aid flows to LICs increased by 1.5 times during 2000–2017 and were predominantly in the form of grants (92.7%). The study found a shift of sectoral aid allocations from the economic and productive sectors towards the social sector. Net aid as a share of GDP increased almost two-fold; implying an increasing trend of aid dependency in several LICs. Novelty: This study tries to present a full account of bilateral aid flows both from Traditional Donors (TDs) and Non-Traditional Donors (NTDs), unlike many earlier studies that have focused on TDs.
