Slavonic Loanwords in the Book of Daniel Preserved in the South-Western Karaim Manuscript no. ADub.III.84

The paper discusses the etymology of Slavonic loanwords found in a previously unpublished South-Western Karaim translation of the Book of Daniel copied into manuscript no. ADub.III.84. South-Western Karaims were surrounded by speakers of Polish, Ukrainian and Russian, with the linguistic contact instigating changes in Karaim over a period of several centuries. The present article focuses only on the Slavonic impact upon Karaim vocabulary and attempts to determine whether the borrowed words can be traced back to Polish, Ukrainian or Russian etymons. The loanwords are additionally compared with their counterparts in ancient Polish Bible translations.

This paper attempts to present the intellectual legacy of Albert Wesselski (Vienna, 1871–Prague, 1939), a partly forgotten great figure of literary and textual folkloristic comparatistics of the first half of the 20th century, and argues for his timeliness. While he also played an important role as a literary mediator and translator (e.g. translations and interpretations of Boccaccio and Dante, translations of medieval Italian, French and Flemish folklore texts), he was primarily concerned with questions of the origins of European and Asian fairy tales, the problem of the processes of transmission and genre theory. He presented the transnational and transcontinental connections between individual (fairy-tale) texts in his reflections, which were based on his exceptional erudition and knowledge of the material. His views on the essentially literary origins of fairy-tale material were disputed by many in his day, but at least some of them now seem to be confirmed. His comparative method can be an inspiration for those working with folklore and literary texts, both here and now. The present paper attempts to provide a sketchy overview of the early stages of Wesselski's oeuvre and to inspire further reflection.

CULTURAL TRANSLATION: HEALING AND RECONCILIATION BASED ON SINAN ANTOON NOVEL’S THE BOOK OF COLLATERAL DAMAGE

This paper presents the transformative power of cultural translation in healing and differences settling down, based on Sinan Antoon`s novel "The Book of Collateral Damage". By analyzing the novel, this paper discusses how the complicated process of cultural translation can bring people from different backgrounds together and help them handle the aftermath of a conflict. Antoon, in his interpretation of the cultural translation, uncovers the difficulties behind it, which illustrates those delicate notes of the experiences in the cross-language and cross-cultural contexts. Antoon in this novel zeroes in on the ambiguous nature of this elapse and touches on the vulnerable stages of a person's psyche after witnessing war. The analysis of Antoon's narrative, therefore, aims to explain the impact of cultural translation in achieving the artful transition from the post-war period because it is the case where differing views and experiences interfere with communication and recovery. Furthermore, this paper positions a cultural translation between the two extremes of post-conflict healing, which entails facilitating dialogue and reconciliation among individuals and groups that have been polarized and divided by war. The theme of the paper is to elucidate the dynamics of cultural translation through Antoon's narrative in an effort to throw light on how art and literature can triumph above all barriers in mending the rifts in societies. Our study, which goes beyond superficial illustration, aims to deepen the understanding of the universal power of cultural translation; this could be a stepping stone for future investigation and applicability in the domain of peacebuilding and intercultural communication.

The topic is romantic travelogues with the subject of Bosnia: descriptions and insights into the perceived “reality” of the Bosnian area and people of the19th century presented through linguistic and stylistic means and on examples of selected travelogues from that period. New historical experiences of the writer opened the way for the emotional reception of collective practices of people, and this often leads to ahistorical conceptualization and long-lasting stereotypes. Considering that both linguistic activity and historical memory are mutual psychological processes, the diverse strategic character of the travel discourse through research shows that known cultural patterns can often deceive with their simplified form.

Mając około pięćdziesiąt lat, wstępuje do klasztoru na Górze Świętej Katarzyny na Synaju. Pełni tam prawdopodobnie posługę administratora szpitala, a ponieważ w jego pismach znajdujemy wiele terminów z zakresu medycyny, można założyć, że był również lekarzem . Wiele podróżując, umacniał w wierze chwiejących, a mającym skrupuły tłumaczył i wyjaśniał wątpliwości, korzystając z osobistego doświadczenia podpartego autorytetem Pisma Świętego.

The article considers the translation by Wiktor Woroszylski of various types of intertextual elements included by Iosif Brodski in his poem Два часа в резервуаре (In English – Two hours in the tank). Regardless of the different translation decisions and noticeable associative shifts that concern specific intertextual elements, the translation as a whole should be considered successful. Nevertheless, in the course of the analysis, the author comes to the conclusion that in the case of an intertextualized text (one that is saturated with intertextual elements), the preservation in the translation of the associative chains that make up the network of intertextual associations is more important than the adequacy of the specific elements of the text.

Anatomia aliteracji. J.R.R. Tolkien jako tłumacz poematu Pan Gawen i Zielony Rycerz

The article presents a short comparative analysis of two versions of the English romance in verse Sir Gawain and the Green Knight – the original text from the 14th century and its modern translation by J.R.R. Tolkien. The Middle English source text uses a North-West English dialect and is an interesting example of a late revival of alliteration originally rooted in the old English tradition. Alliteration as a formal organizing principle is combined with end-rhymes which complete the structure of the poem; this is both sophisticated and rare. Tolkien’s modern rendition of the romance recognizes and respects its dominant structural elements and attempts to recreate all the formal aspects of the text as adequately as possible. The modern version, while being a translation, acquires the semi-authorial signature of Tolkien, both a translator and scholar who creates a highly competent and historically informed rendition. The translator’s craft is particularly visible when Tolkien’s version is juxtaposed with the Polish translation by Andrzej Wicher. The linguistic and cultural distance between Polish and English is larger than the distance between the original and the modern rendition in English, and, as a result, the translation of Andrzej Wicher manages to reproduce only a limited number of alliterations and hence loses many artistic features that were essential components of the original text.

Traces of intertextuality in Henry James’s novella Daisy Miller and its Polish translations

The article adopts a contrastive perspective to the study of intertextual references found in Henry James’s novella Daisy Miller (1878) and its two Polish translations by Jadwiga Olędzka (1961) and Magdalena Moltzan-Małkowska (2013). The aim is to identify selected traces of intertextuality included in the source text and analyse how they have been dealt with by each translator in the process of establishing a new intertextual relationship, namely, that between the original and its translation. Assuming that texts do not exist in a vacuum, but are rather propelled by other (con)textual units, the question is whether and to what extent the intertextual tropes enriching the artistic significance of the novella are available and understandable to the reader of its Polish translations.

A Comparison of Styles across Three Versions of Cranford in Chinese: 1927, 1937 and 1985

With the differences between westernized vernacular Chinese and mature modern Chinese, the three versions of Cranford show the development of the modern Chinese language: Woo Kwang Kien’s Cranf in 1927, Zhu Manhua’s The Forbidden City for Women in 1937, and Xu Xin and Gu Mingdong’s 1985 version published with the original title Cranford. As viewed from the overall result, Woo’s and Zhu’s translations are rich both in classical Chinese elegance and western style, embracing deep personal emotions, while Xu’s shows the well-developed quality of the Chinese language. As to the representation of the original linguistic features, Woo’s and Zhu’s translations partly present the original text, as the early modem Chinese that they employ is full of expressions with western characteristics. On the other hand, Xu’s version with its authentic modern Chinese and flexible approaches, represents Gaskell’s linguistic features in a more perfect way. This paper discusses the styles and effects in these versions from the following aspects: (1) beauty in classical Chinese; (2) the charm of appellation; (3) the translation of idiom; (4) rhotic accent and dialect; and (5) excessive westernization and modern Chinese.

The positive effects of using drama in ELT have long been recognized, however this has often been explored from the context of the classroom. The article retroactively examines the activities of an English language youth theatre club for Polish teenagers as a social event organized in addition to their academic studies of the language. Special attention is paid to the use of classic texts (albeit adapted) by authors such as Shakespeare, and particularly the World War One poetry of Wilfred Owen. The article examines the techniques of using and performing the texts, the importance of gesture and intonation as well as the necessity to explore cultural and historical aspects of the material. The students’ opinions of the work and the effect on their language learning were submitted in a questionnaire and are presented towards the end of the article.

Lingwodydaktyczny potencjał ChatGPT w nauczaniu języków obcych

ChatGPT can be used as an alternative resource when learning a foreign language. It has a wide range of applications, such as: working with vocabulary and grammar, practicing, testing and proofreading texts, practicing speaking, creating learning materials, automatically translating texts and providing information about countries, cultures, history and other aspects related to the foreign language being taught. Phraseological competence is an important element of general communicative skills, which enables the learner of a foreign language to use the language correctly, freely, and broadens knowledge of intercultural issues. The article analyses the possibilities of using a chatbot when learning foreign language phraseology. The study aims to assess the effectiveness of ChatGPT in the process of foreign-language phraseology acquisition. Texts from Russian and Polish textbooks containing phraseological units are used as material. The results reveal that for this purpose ChatGPT can be used partially because its effectiveness is related to the type of specific task. The Chatbot gives worse results when it is tasked with translating phraseological compounds or citing an example of their use, while it is promising as an alternative resource for creating educational content.

The tradition of writing works on literary arts and some poetic terms in Persian literature has begun with Raduyani’s Tercüman al-Balaga and reached an important stage with Rashid al-Din Vatvat’s Hadaik al-Sihr fi Dakaik al-Sihr. Vahid al-Tabriz’'s Miftah al-Badayi is one of the works on literary arts and some poetic terms written under the influence of Vatvat’s work. This work was translated into Turkish by Ali Nazif, with the title Tercüme-i Miftah al-Badayi in 1300/1882-83. Six years after writing his translation, Ali Nazif wrote Zinet alKalam based on this work. In Zinet al-Kalam, the author made some additions to his previous translation and omitted some parts of the translation. When both works are analysed in detail, it is understood that Zinet al-Kalam is not an independent work, but rather a work produced from the translation of an earlier work. In the Ottoman copyright tradition, it is a common practice to add to, subtract from or summarise the source text when translating a work from another language into Turkish. Since it is not sufficient to consider these works as translations, the term original-translation has been proposed by researchers to express these works. Ali Nazif’s Zinet al-Kalam is also a work close to original-translation. However, this work is a original work based on the author’s previous translation of Miftah al-Badayi. In the first part of this study, the time period in which Vahid al-Tabrizi lived, whose century of life and date of death are suggested to be different from each other in the sources, was tried to be determined based on various clues and information about his works was given. In the second part, that the method applied in the translation of Miftah al-Badayi is analysed, and Zinet al-Kalam as an original work produced from this translation is emphasised.

Resisting Russification in Soviet Ukraine through Literary Translation: The Voice of Mykola Lukash

The Soviet totalitarian regime not only violated human rights, it pursued an aggressive policy of assimilation, seeking Russian cultural and linguistic hegemony over all Soviet republics. Literary translation was no longer viewed as an apolitical activity and became an ideological weapon and an efficient “means of forced cultural change” (Monticelli). Regime ideologues sought control over both the selection of “reliable” authors / texts for translation and the ways in which these texts were interpreted in the target languages. This policy led to the appearance of massive translations from Russian literature and a widespread practice of indirect translations, with Russian intermediary texts as a criterion of fidelity. In Soviet Ukraine, however, this Russification policy went further and targeted the Ukrainian language itself; this resulted in the lexicographical deactivation of many authentic Ukrainian words and their substitution with Russian counterparts. Extensive repressive practices and tight ideological constraints gave rise to translators’ activism and cultural resistance and inspired translators to take on new roles. The case of Mykola Lukash (1919–88), whose name went down in the history of Ukrainian translation as a symbol of resistance, illustrates some of the social roles performed by translators to resist Russification. Lukash’s actions as translation gatekeeper, cultural custodian, and language guardian exemplified the importance of personal agency and a firm occupational identity for translators who opposed assimilation.

Liturgical Translation in Europe’s Medieval East: Matters of Civilization and Textual Praxis

The paper focuses on the medieval period of the history of liturgical translation in Ukraine and Poland. In the ninth century, the evangelizing mission of SS Cyril and Methodius brought Christian translations to the east of what was then Europe. Although religious translations were not cherished in Moravia and Poland, they flourished in Bulgaria, Serbia, and Ukraine. The Roman corpus of liturgical texts existed only in Latin, and socio-political conditions stimulated the emergence of translations from Latin to Polish. The Byzantine corpus was introduced in Old Church Slavonic, which was understood by and accepted among Slavs. Different nations modified these texts according to their local visions and the necessities of their churches. Poland’s and Ukraine’s liturgical praxis under the aegis of the Roman and Byzantine Mother-Churches defined the shaping of different corpora of liturgical books, but the quality of translations was high in all Slavonic translations. The (typically) negatively judged strategy of literalism prepared a foundation for lingual experimentation in semantic expression and helped to spread the local melodies of liturgical tradition. The Church Slavonic language gave a more fruitful impetus to the development of early Ukrainian literature than the Latin language provided to early Polish literature. In fact, the Latin language restrained a similar development of early Polish literature for two centuries.

It shall be possible to have a general consideration of the language used in the Albanian translation of the NT only when the complete manuscript of the entire text, drafted by its first translator, Vangjel Meksi (1819-1820), is fully transcribed and published, and when its text shall be opposed, in detail, against the subsequent revised translation by Grigor Gjirokastriti (1827). The work that began with the transcription of the translated text of “the Gospel of Matthew” by Xh. Lloshi (2012), as completed by Th. Qendro (2016), who updated the revision made by Grigor Gjirokastriti by using the current Albanian alphabet, was continued with the transcription of the “Gospel of Mark” (Qirjazi 2018) and the “Gospel of John” (Qirjazi 2019). The present paper focuses on issues regarding the transcription of V. Meksi’s manuscript; said manuscript, as it is known, was the saved copy of the original, written by someone who hardy knew any Albanian. Following the transcription, the linguist and the philologue, have the opportunity to oppose the two texts, the translation and the revision, and to reach interesting conclusions about the Albanian language of the southern disctricts, at the end of the 18th century and at the dawn of the 19th century. What is most important is that we are actually dealing, on one hand, with a pre-national Albanian era document, which is evident from the absolute absence of linguistic purism, and on the other hand, from the early efforts to use a written Albanian language which would be understood by as many people as possible, so, hyperdialectic, to this purpose.

The study of "winged expressions" enables the interdisciplinary integration of linguistics with anthropology, cultural history, sociology, psychology, philosophy, and other fields. In this context, it is essential to note that the research has an ethnolinguistic character. In light of the above, we examine the etymology of "winged phrases" by analysing the language used in the works of Walter Scott, a renowned English writer of Scottish origin who is regarded as the "founder of the historical novel genre" at the beginning of the XIX century. "Winged expressions" that have withstood the test of time and have been handed down from generation to generation as the most valuable heirlooms have retained their communicative and expressive richness. The study of "winged expressions" in languages with different systems is of interest in creating a correct and complete picture of the development of the language and its lexical-semantic system. The significance of translation is on the rise, parallel to the growing prevalence of foreign language study. The most challenging aspect of translation is the phraseological language. Winged expressions occupy a distinctive position among language units in translation. This is based on the fact that winged expressions are directly related to the ethnopsychology of each nation and serve as a benchmark.

This study aims to bring data and make interpretations for a very specific case in Albanian letters, for a poet whose creative works were brought into contact with the readers only many years after the death of their author. It is about Vilson Blloshmi (shot when he was 29 years old (1948-1977)), who wrote poetry, translated literary works, mainly from French literature, but could not make public either his original poetic creations or his literary translations, because, as a result of class prejudices, he failed to become part of the literary creative field of the time. Current contemporary approaches or points of view in literary studies, in the sciences of discourse and respectively in the analysis of literary discourse, concepts and interpretations for the biographical notions or categories themselves (the individual with the relevant extraliterary life biography), writer, speaker or recipient of utterances in the text (enonciateur), document/manuscript, literary text or literary work help in the examination and reinterpretation of V. Blloshmi`s manuscript literary legacy, which already in contact with today's reader, has been shaped as a literary work. Translations, as well as texts in French by French authors, mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries, copied by hand from various publications in the French language, create a poetic "anthology", which, even though it did not entirely come in the Albanian language, it nevertheless helps to know his literary and cultural preferences, his aesthetic positioning; helps the readers to get to know the poet's creative process, his creative paratopia; and, in this way, to re-understand and enjoy his original poetic creativity.

Gjergj Fishta's translations are a priceless contribution for the time when they were produced and an argument of great interest that deserves to be expanded and analyzed these days. Alessandro Manzoni, an Italian romantic novelist and poet, was one of the greatest writers that Fishta studied and translated at a young age. The selection and youthful passion to translate Manzoni, his poetics and psychology, as well, was not fortuitous. Inside this Italian classic writer, our national poet found a worthy representative of romanticism, a writer with a strong religious faith and a poetic philosophy that would leave a sign and would inspire him not infrequently during his poetic creativity. The translation of the Inni sacri (Sacred hymns) shows that Fishta belongs to those translators who remain faithful to the content and style of the author preserving without any compromise the soul of the poem and the poet. Even though at a young age, Fishta already had the passion of a great poet, the deep sensitivity to capture even the smallest shades of meaning, which often derive from stylistic techniques or sound combinations between words or verses.
