Promotion of Wine Tourism in the South Moravian Region: Predominant Use of Printed Materials?

Promotion of Wine Tourism in the South Moravian Region: Predominant Use of Printed Materials?

Author(s): Patrik Kubát,Andrea Králíková / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

In today’s world, the online environment is used every day. As online advertising comes to the fore in the tourism sector, all those who produce printed materials should also adapt to this form of materials and build a bridge to this new form of advertising. This is an important prerequisite for the development between promoters and recipients. The aim of this article is to define the importance of printed promotional materials for wine tourism from the point of view of the creators of these materials, that is, from the point of view of the suppliers in the wine tourism sector. A qualitative method with semi-structured interviews was chosen for the research. Representatives of the National Wine Centre, Wine Fund, Czech Tourism, and other institutions that promote and develop wine tourism in the Czech Republic were selected for this study. The analysis of the answers showed that printed promotional materials are still relevant in wine tourism and the supply side still considers this form of advertising important and necessary. Even in this current „online era”, the printed form has a segment that still prefers it in comparison to the online form.

Artificial Intelligence and Employee Stability: The Mediating Effect of Job Engagement in Romania's Health Tourism Sector

Artificial Intelligence and Employee Stability: The Mediating Effect of Job Engagement in Romania's Health Tourism Sector

Author(s): Marius Lucian BREABAN,Ionut Andrei MILITARU,Remus Ion HORNOIU,Maurizio Lanfranchi / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

This paper investigates the influence that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has on job security, which in this study includes the severity of threats (ST) and feelings of powerlessness (PO), within the Romanian health tourism sector. Additionally, we analyse how AI-driven job engagement (ENG) impacts employees' turnover intentions (TI), providing perspectives about how to maintain workforce stability. As the recent literature indicates, there is growing concern among employees in various sectors regarding to the potential that Ai have to replace human labour, mostly with a specific focus on roles requiring interpersonal skills, such as those in health tourism. Utilising the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and also by employing a quantitative methodology, we surveyed 131 spa and hotel employees using validated and multi-item scales to measure job engagement components and job insecurity dimensions. Our results reveal significant relationships between perceived powerlessness, job engagement, and turnover intentions, showing the mediating role of job engagement. In the current study, we found that educational level moderates the relationship between perceived job, threats, and turnover intentions. This indicates an interaction between employee characteristics and perceptions of the threats that AI is bringing. With this study, we contribute both to the theoretical understanding of how AI impacts employee psychology in the market of health tourism, and also by offering insights into managing workforce transitions in the face of technological advancements.

Does The Organisational Culture Play a Role in Choosing a Job in Tourism

Author(s): Vlad Diaconescu,Iulia (DĂUȘ) OGOREANU,Alina-Maria VIERIU / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

As the younger generation represents the future of the tourism labour market, it is important to understand what attracts them to a company. This is especially true for companies looking to hire top young talent for the tourism sector. It is widely recognised that young people place great importance on their well-being and how work fits into their lives and identity. The well-being of a person in a company can be seen through the lens of organisational culture. Therefore, a study was conducted with 101 students to find out what type of organisational culture (according to the Competing Values Framework model) is most interesting to younger people, if they are interested in a job in tourism and how much they value the presence of an organizational culture when making a job decision. The results indicate that most students view organisational culture as an important factor in their career choice. Additionally, students value a collaborative culture and students with previous work experience in tourism are more likely to be interested in a long-term career in tourism. They would also accept a job offer in the tourism sector if they had the opportunity. These results show that in general students are interested in working in tourism, especially in companies with an open and friendly cultural work environment.

Author(s): Khanh Hung DOAN,Dao Phu Loc TRAN,Maruf Mohammad Sirajum MONIR / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

Along with the development of tourism, the competition between tourist destinations is growing. Therefore, destinations must compete fiercely in many forms to survive and develop. Fierce competition among tourist destinations requires them to create competitive advantages over others. At this time, the destination brand is essential to help the destination achieve its development goals and ensure its position. Previous research has acknowledged the added value that brands bring to tourism destinations. However, research on destination brand equity must continue, especially for destinations with outstanding characteristics, such as cultural and heritage destinations. This article explores the factors that make up the brand equity of a cultural destination. From there, we can have a more specific view of the differences in evaluating destination brand equity. The research was carried out based on a survey of 251 tourists in Hue City, Vietnam, the cultural city of ASEAN. The results show that the dimensions of cultural property of the destination brand equity positively influence the structure of destination brand equity. The equity aspects of the cultural destination brand include the equity of the cultural destination brand, Positive associations about the cultural destination, quality of the cultural destination brand, and loyalty. Through this research, destination managers can identify the advantages of the cultural destination brand in Hue City and then have solutions to improve the equity of the destination brand there. The paper ends with a discussion of the results and implications of the study.

Aviation Pollution, Tourism, and Economic Development: A Study of the EKC Hypothesis at the Regional Level

Author(s): Thanh Ngo,Wai Hong Kan Tsui,Hannah Nguyen / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2024

The study aims to revisit the relationship between aviation pollution, tourism, and economic development through the lens of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), particularly at the regional level, using New Zealand as a case study. We are the first to estimate aviation pollution at regional airports in New Zealand and use them as proxy for the regional pollution in an EKC setting. Our findings provide evidence of an EKC at New Zealand regions, indicating that tourism and economic development contribute to the long-term regional environment improvement. This highlights the necessity for environment policy to be tailored at a regional level, rather than solely at the national scale. Additionally, our research introduces a novel approach to EKC studies by incorporating new pollution estimations, which enhances the understanding of regional environmental dynamics. Among others, we discovered that that the sustainable tourism policy has, and will, work well in New Zealand. This study underscores the importance of considering regional factors in environmental policymaking and offers insights that could inform future strategies for balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability.

The Effectiveness of Micro-credential Programme from the Perspective of Tourism Students

The Effectiveness of Micro-credential Programme from the Perspective of Tourism Students

Author(s): Azila Azmi,Hanani Ahmad Zubir,Ferial Farook,Hamizah Noorafizi,Ahmad Mu’az Abd Wahab / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2024

Tourism micro-credential programmes have gained significant attention in recent years as a means of enhancing the skills and knowledge of students pursuing careers in the tourism industry. However, it is important to evaluate the effectiveness of these programmes from the perspective of tourism students at various universities in Malaysia. These digital proofs of learning serve as evidence of the learner's achievements, knowledge, and experience, which can be utilised to progress towards a more comprehensive certification or degree that focuses on a specific topic of study within a shorter time. Despite the increasing use of this platform in recent years, there are limited studies discussing its impact on students' perceptions and its effectiveness in enhancing their engagement with tourism subjects. Thus, this research was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the micro-credential programmes from the perspective of tourism students so that they can be managed more effectively in higher education institutions. To obtain data, the qualitative technique of interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) was applied to thoroughly examine the participants’ actual experiences. The participants were selected among the tourism students from various universities in Malaysia that offer tourism and hospitality courses. The interview data were analysed using thematic analysis, which enabled the identification of four themes and fourteen codes. The findings highlighted that the students have positive experiences following micro-credential programmes. Further research should be carried out to ensure microcredential programmes stay relevant in a constant tourism industry.

KARS’TA BACASIZ FABRİKA: GASTRONOMİ TURİZMİNE RESTORAN İŞLETMECİLERİNİN BAKIŞI

Author(s): Rotinda ÇAĞDAŞ,Arzu DURUKAN / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 47/2024

This study aims to understand the relationship between local food, which is one of the important elements of gastronomy tourism, and restaurant operators in Kars and determine their perspective on gastronomy tourism. For this purpose, the study was conducted in Kars, which has a cultural richness since many different groups, such as Natives (it is the name of a group), Azerbaijanis, Terekemes, Turkmens, Malakans, Kurds, live together. An anthropological study was carried out using qualitative methods to determine the awareness of restaurants about their role in the preparation and consumption of local dishes and the promotion of these dishes in terms of gastronomy tourism. Participant observation and in-depth interview techniques were used in this study. Yusufpaşa District, which is the place where tourists spend most of their time in the city, was chosen as the study area, with Kars Castle, Baltic-style architectural structures, restaurants with local menus opened in these historical buildings, souvenirs, and cheese/honey shops. In-depth interviews were held with 11 neighborhood business owners and/or operators. As a result of these interviews, observations, and informal conversations, it has been understood that tourism has recently become almost the only source of income for Kars, but there is a shortage of qualified personnel in these enterprises. Although young people do not prefer tiring jobs, women who know food do not work outside the home in food-related businesses due to traditional tendencies, and the delay in winter tourism due to climate changes seem to be problems in the number of tourists in the sector, it has been observed that operators and the public have a positive attitude towards tourism. The interviews of this field study, which is a part of the ongoing project numbered 122G024 titled "Determining the Contribution of Local People to Gastronomy Tourism in Kars" and supported by TÜBİTAK, will continue to be held with local people and tourists coming to Kars. The data obtained from the project will also be prepared for publication.

Geotouristic values of the Northwestern Ethiopian Plateau as an opportunity for development

Author(s): Wacław FLOREK,Marek Majewski / Language(s): English Issue: 114/2024

Various countries and regions are constantly seeking new development opportunities. This is particularly important in areas with low levels of development. Geotourism as a branch of special tourism (sustainable, sightseeing, qualified, envi- ronmental) may present such an opportunity, and the geotourist values of the Northwestern Ethiopian Plateau should be treated as a factor conducive to the development of this part of Ethiopia. However, before preparing an offering addressed to specific groups of tourists, it is necessary to develop a catalogue of geotourist resources. This is quite easy for large landforms (the Abyssinian Rift, the Blue Nile Gorge, laccoliths in Tigray), while the recognition of geological values (rocks occurring on the surface of the area and in exposures, mineral deposits) and objects related to human activity in prehistory (e.g., megaliths) and historical times (stelae, churches and monasteries carved in rocks) requires the involvement of well-trained geologists, archaeologists and other specialists. In recent years, considerable progress has been observed in the recognition of the geotourist values of the Northwestern Ethiopian Plateau, as evidenced by numerous publications. There are also studies presenting an offer for those interested in geotourism or geoarchaeology.

Author(s): Arzu Huseyn,Yasaman Abasova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

As the host country for the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP-29), Azerbaijan has intensified its focus on ecological entrepreneurship, with a special emphasis on ecotourism. This study aimed to explore the potential for growth in eco-entrepreneurship and ecotourism within Azerbaijan. To achieve this, a survey was conducted with Generation Z students at the Azerbaijan Tourism and Management University, a leading institution in tourism and management education in Azerbaijan. The survey sought to gauge Generation Z students’ perspectives on ecological entrepreneurship and ecotourism. Given that these individuals are poised to assume managerial roles in the tourism sector upon graduation, their attitudes toward ecotourism are crucial for the sector’s future development in Azerbaijan. The findings revealed several key insights: (1) there is a robust interest among Generation Z students in pursuing careers in ecotourism; (2) they are optimistic about the growth potential for ecological entrepreneurship in Azerbaijan; (3) they believe that ecotourism will gain popularity and become a lucrative sector in the country; and (4) hosting COP-29 is expected to further stimulate interest in ecological entrepreneurial ventures in Azerbaijan. The research, employing both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, indicates that an event like COP-29 can significantly boost entrepreneurial interest in Azerbaijan.

THE INFLUENCE OF PERSONNEL COSTS ON THE PROFITABILITY OF THE CROATIAN - HOTEL INDUSTRY

THE INFLUENCE OF PERSONNEL COSTS ON THE PROFITABILITY OF THE CROATIAN - HOTEL INDUSTRY

Author(s): Lorena Škuflić,Maja Bašić / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

In the 1980s, Croatia recorded about 8 million arrivals and 53 million overnight stays, which dropped to 2.5 million arrivals and 10-11 million overnight stays in the 1990s. Since then, tourism has steadily increased, reaching 17.78 million arrivals and 90 million overnight stays in 2022. Tourism’s contribution to GDP more than doubled, spurring investments and improving accommodations. However, competition has pressured revenues, while costs have risen due to higher wages, interest rates, private accommodation growth, emigration, and inflation. This paper investigates the impact of personnel costs on hotel industry profitability from 1993 to 2022, focusing on the recent exponential rise in personnel costs. These rising costs threaten profitability due to labour shortages, continuous labour imports, declining productivity, and increasing input prices. Using data from 6,127 hotel companies obtained from FINA, analyzed with the two-step system robust GMM method, the study found that a 1% increase in net salary costs results in a 3.7% decrease in gross profit margin. The analysis highlights the dual impact of increased tourism demand: while it boosts economic growth and investments, it also creates significant cost pressures. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for formulating strategies to maintain profitability in Croatia’s hotel industry amidst growing competition and economic challenges.

Author(s): Made Heny Urmila Dewi,Bagus Shandy Narmaditya,M. Rudi Irwansyah / Language(s): English Issue: 6/2024

Tourism is the sector most impacted during the pandemic, while the effort to make tourism go back to normal post-pandemic will promote economic development. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the strategies for the tourism sector to return to normal as the abundance for Bali in Indonesia. To deal with, this study involved 120 participants in some areas in Bali that were further analyzed using SWOT analysis. The findings indicate that the decline in the tourism sector due to the pandemic has caused Bali’s economic performance to diminish dramatically, which causes the issue of poverty. For this reason, the results suggest that the tourism recovery strategy must start with efforts to recover in the post-pandemic, including accelerating traditional village-based community enhancement and dealing with disaster mitigation, which helps speed up the handling of the pandemic in Bali Province. Lastly, the digital promotion for tourism can raise the visitors to revisit Bali as the main priority for tourism. Thus, the findings can be used by policy scholars and the government to make the economy normal.
