Our study is based upon the interest of Dr. Ioan Raţiu, Professor at the Blaj, who was concerned about the life and work of Alexandru Papiu Ilarian. Upon the life and activity of Alexandru Papiu Ilarian, Dr. Ioan Raţiu has prepared „a beautiful historical and literary study,” which was supposed to occur under the auspices of ASTRA. The study was published in the Union beginning with no. 43 of 25 October 1902. To answer some questions, the teacher from Blaj wrote some former students. We publish a letter that responds precisely to the questions Dr. Ioan Raţiu deems necessary to be clear. Among former students and collaborators of Papiu Ilarian, whom Ioan Ratiu has addressed, through letters, asking to give him information about the work of their teacher Papiu Ilarian, is included Senator M. L. Adamescu in Piatra Neamţ. Given the important contents of this letter, a present.

This paper is a review of the book On the Metaphysical Cognition by Stanisław Kamiński, one of the founders of the Lublin School of Philosophy (Poland) which refers to the Aristotelian-Thomistic tradition. The book consists of a selection of Kamiński’s five articles devoted to the specificity of metaphysical cognition. According to the author, Kamiński’s book is not only a unique contribution to the understanding of cognition in classical metaphysics, but also a valuable reading suggestion for all interested in the general methodology of sciences and philosophy.

Two books of Étienne Gilson are especially important in the area of aesthetics: Painting and Reality and The Arts of the Beautiful. In my essay I discuss Gilson’s idea of beauty and his idea of art. To some degree, É. Gilson follows traditional Thomistic point of view, i.e., he claims that the beautiful is that which pleases when seen, or that which consists of integrity, proportion and clarity. He gives, however, a new interpretation of clarity which, for him, means not only physical lucidity, but also a metaphysical radiation and spiritualization of what is material. As for art, É. Gilson is of an opinion that it enjoys a strong metaphysical status, since the existence of the work of art comes from the artist himself. Finally, I explain why É. Gilson’s views are open to further discussion, both metaphysical and theological.

I’m going to tell you about how I became a political activist. What made me take to the streets, so I broke a taboo: political commitment? I put forward the thesis that in the present political system, participation in political life is abhorrent, so that it remains the domain of a narrow and permanent group of citizens who thus profit (in various dimensions) at the expense of the rest of society. I am talking / writing about how I interacted with other residents of Szczecin and what this experience was for me. I am not going to convince anyone of the so-called „my political option”. I argue that you should get involved, that this is the stage to full humanity.

This paper is a review of Paweł Grabarczyk’s latest book, Directival Theory of Meaning: From Syntax and Pragmatics to Narrow Linguistic Content. I focus mostly on two concepts constitutive for the directival theory of meaning—that of linguistic trial and that of meaning directive. These two concepts, while ingeniously developed by Grabarczyk, are not free of problems and somewhat controversial assumptions. I start with describing the basis of Grabarczyk’s proposal, as well as of the historical background from which it originated. Then, I move on to the analysis of the notion of linguistic trial. After that I focus on the concept of meaning directive, criticising certain assumptions that come with it. The conclusion is that while Grabarczyk’s version of the directival theory of meaning is an interesting proposal, most of its shortcomings stem from the fact that for a theory that is supposed to work well on natural languages, too many examples pertain to artificial languages. Until an analysis of a natural language in the style of the directival theory of meaning is conducted, it is not possible to properly judge the value of this theory.
