Die Einstellungen des Alters und des Alterns in den deutschen Werbespots

Die Einstellungen des Alters und des Alterns in den deutschen Werbespots

Author(s): Miruna Ivanov / Language(s): German Issue: 6/2024

Depending on the cultural context, age characteristics or specific portrayals of age are presented differently in television advertisements. Advertising agencies often attempt to convey certain cultural images, family values and principles or even illustrate humorous age stereotypes, which can be identified for example in the two analyzed commercials from Bluna and Teekanne, in order to attract the interest and attention of the audience. Since childhood, each person has certain image ideas that have a great influence on them from literature, society, the media, but especially from television. These influence our perception of the natural process of aging, either positively or negatively. However, such age stereotypes are also culture-dependent, because in Asian cultures the portrayal of old age is perceived differently, in the sense of wisdom, spiritual experience, long longevity, and from a state of healthy well-being. In contrast, in European cultures, perceptions of old age differ significantly, with a greater association with severe physical conditions or mental illnesses.

LA CONDITION HUMAINE/HUMAN CONDITION. A Literary Interpretation of “Veiller sur elle” through a Semiotic Reading of Tomasso’s Story within a Story

LA CONDITION HUMAINE/HUMAN CONDITION. A Literary Interpretation of “Veiller sur elle” through a Semiotic Reading of Tomasso’s Story within a Story

Author(s): Olivia-Cristina Rusu / Language(s): English Issue: 41/2024

This article explores Jean-Baptiste Andrea’s novel “Veiller sur elle”, from a semiotic perspective and shows how complex themes and aspects of human existence are constructed and conveyed through narrative techniques such as symbols and stories within stories. Building on Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic triangle as a theoretical framework, this analysis reveals how symbols and imagery function as semiotic triggers that draw upon complex interpretations of the human condition. Linking semiotic processes to aspects of the human condition - such as the quest for knowledge, the power of imagination, the contemplation of mortality, the pursuit of artistic immortality and protection – this article shows how multifaceted layers of literary texts reveal universal human themes.

Cosmin Mihuţ, Politică şi discurs naţional în vremea domniei lui Alexandru D. Ghica (1834-1842)

Author(s): Mădălin ANGHEL / Language(s): English Issue: 1-2/2024

Book review. The volume Politics and National Discourse during the Reign of Alexandru D. Ghica (1834-1842) represents a significant contribution to the transition to modernity and the struggle for national emancipation in Wallachia. The 283 pages of text provide a fresh perspective on the politics during the reign of Alexandru D. Ghica, aiming to explain the “transition” towards “modern politics” in Wallachia, in connection with the formation of the discourse for national emancipation. Cosmin Mihuț, the author of this volume, is a lecturer at the Faculty of History, “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași, and obtained his PhD from the same faculty in 2015. His research focuses on the history of politics from the perspective of discursive practices, representations, forms of power legitimation in the first half of the 19th century, national discourse, and national emancipation in the Romanian Principalities, as well as the history of international relations, particularly regarding the Great Powers’ policies towards the Romanian Principalities within the context of the “Eastern Question”.

„Kult der Zerstreuung“. Kulturkritik im Essay der Weimarer Republik

Author(s): Markus Fischer / Language(s): German Issue: 2/2021

The present paper deals with the concept of distraction („Zerstreuung“) as expressed in several essays of cultural criticism written during the epoch of the Weimar Republic in Germany. Authors like Siegfried Kracauer, Walter Benjamin and Ernst Bloch analyse in these essays the philosophical, aesthetical, sociological, and cultural dimensions of this concept of distraction which helps to understand the historical era of the Weimar Republic better with respect to both culture and society. Distraction in this specific sense not only means entertainment and amusement but also the sociological dispersion of the individual person in an upcoming mass society and culture. In an aesthetical sense distraction refers to artistic means like the emerging medium of the film which constitutes both a symptom of and a remedy for contemporary problems in society and culture. Side glances at the social class of the employees, at books of fiction during the Weimar Republic and at Georg Simmel’s cultural sociology round out these observations concerning the concept of distraction.

Norman Manea. Identitatea ca traumă

Norman Manea. Identitatea ca traumă

Author(s): Iulian Boldea / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 10-11/2024

This paper explores the literary universe of Norman Manea, emphasizing identity as a central theme intertwined with trauma, exile, and historical oppression. Manea’s works defy easy classification, oscillating between fiction and autofiction, psychological exploration, and historical testimony. His narratives revisit the traumas of the Holocaust, the brutalities of communist totalitarianism, and the existential dilemmas of exile. His writing engages with subversive figures—the clown, the fool, the marginalized—while addressing the oppressive nature of power and censorship. Exile, both linguistic and existential, becomes a space of both suffering and reinvention, where language itself serves as a home. Through a dense, introspective prose, Manea constructs a literary testimony of survival, a relentless interrogation of history, and a meditation on the role of literature as an act of resistance and remembrance.

The Painful Memory of Moldova – The Book of Famine by Larisa Turea

The Painful Memory of Moldova – The Book of Famine by Larisa Turea

Author(s): Cornel Huțanu / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

The book authored by Larisa Turea talks about one of the most brutally dark pages of the history of Moldova, the 1946-1947 famine. The result of a decades-long thoughtful research, the book brings together shattering testimonies of this tragic event, alongside insightful translations of official documents and touching photographs that shape an irrefutable truth: hundreds of thousands of people perished not because of natural conditions, not even as accidental victims of an irresponsible policy, but because of a man-made famine engineered by the Soviet government.

Pobožnost daljine

Pobožnost daljine

Author(s): Dženita Karić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 65-68/2024

In this paper, I am focusing on the Hajj as a form of the piety of traversing distance. While the Hajj has been a subject of scholarly and Sufi polemics and meaning-making processes, what is often left out are the mechanisms of continuity underpinning the vitality of the Hajj for each and every generation of believers. These mechanisms are embedded in the piety of distance, which is comprised of several elements: the centrality of the traveling body, the ambiguity of the pilgrimage as a moral category, and the responsibility towards other Muslims. Based on the examples from my book ‘’Bosnian Hajj Literature: Multiple Paths to the Holy’’ (Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 2022) and other Hajj related publications, I show how Muslims, Bosniak, and non-Bosniak, both in the past and present, cultivated the piety of distance.

Kršćanske žene na vodećim položajima u Crkvi

Kršćanske žene na vodećim položajima u Crkvi

Author(s): Alena Demirović / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 65-68/2024

Female leadership in Abrahamic religions has always been complex and multifaceted, as Christianity and other Abrahamic religions have a long history of patriarchal and societal structures. In the first years, women were followers of Jesus, took him as their mentor, and devoted their lives to his ministry and service. They, and Pheobe later on with Paul, displayed leadership, demonstrated hospitality, and shared their wealth with less fortunate ones, all in the name of their faith. Just as Jesus practiced mentoring after he asked his disciples to follow him in his mission, the Church is required to do the same and permit their male leaders to mentor those less experienced in order to bridge the gender gap and acquire future capable leaders in order to cater to their congregation’s needs. In the past 50 years, a higher presence of women leaders in the Church has been an essential step towards promoting gender equality and challenging patriarchal sociocultural traditions that are gender biased. This change was overdue for so long. Presently, there are many examples of women in leadership roles who, alongside influential scholars, are helping to advocate for gender equality and empowerment of women of faith (not only Christian women) within their respective communities. When doing so, they create a more inclusive and equal faith community for all. Better yet, an interfaith community where no women would be turned down to lead the congregation and where no congregants would be treated as second-class citizens due to their gender or ethnic background.
