Central-European Masculinities in a Comparative Perspective — Symposium Report
The international symposium "Central-European Masculinities in a Comparative Perspective" held in Prague in June 2024 focused on critical studies of men and masculinities. Researchers from various Central European institutions discussed the dynamic and ambiguous nature of masculinity in historical and contemporary contexts. Topics included the evolution of masculinity in the Habsburg Empire, post-communist narratives, LGBT+ activism, and the impact of socialism on male identity. The symposium featured panels on modernity, state socialism, queer masculinities, and contemporary stakes, highlighting the intersection of masculinity with nationalism, feminism, and social modernization. Presentations also addressed the portrayal of masculinity in literature, film, and military service. The event concluded with discussions on the need for new conceptual frameworks that consider local traditions and histories. Future research directions include the creation of a bibliography, analysis of masculinist movements, and Jewish masculinity.
