Summary/Abstract: The conference "Lutheraner und Mediziner unterwegs nach Jerusalem," held from April 11-13, 2024, in Sondershausen, focused on the history of early modern education. Organized by the Schlossmuseum and the Friedrich-Christian-Lesser-Stiftung, it was inspired by a 16th-century manuscript by Wolfgang Holtzwirth, a Lutheran pharmacist from Halle. The manuscript details his pilgrimage from Venice to the Holy Land in 1546, making him possibly the first Lutheran pilgrim to Palestine. The conference explored the broader context of Protestant pilgrimages to Jerusalem, despite the opposition from Luther and Calvin. It also highlighted the participation of Oldřich Prefát from Prague, who documented his journey in a printed travelogue. The event featured contributions from various scholars, including discussions on Holtzwirth's life, the role of pharmacists and physicians in travel, and the collection of natural and pharmaceutical materials during oriental journeys. The conference concluded with a general discussion on Protestant pilgrims, emphasizing the interconnected themes of early modern travel, pilgrimage, and scientific knowledge.
