Gatherings in Biosemiotics has been held annually since 2001. The restrictions related to the corona virus pandemic changed the circumstances and the form of the event in 2020 (Kull 2021a, 2021b; Rodríguez H., Lacková 2021). It was also difficult for universities to organize conferences the following year. Looking for a place for 2021, we found it at the kind Bateson Institute in Sweden. The center is headed by Nora Bateson (Gregory Bateson's daughter), she previously had connections with some biosemioticists (V. Alexander, L. Bruni, K. Kull), and then she became the hostess of this meeting. In preparation for the conference, a semi-salon was organized in Tartu's Baer house on July 13, 2021 (Chávez Barreto et al. 2022). While the program of the annual conference is usually put together by local organizers, this time the main organizational work was done by Donald Favareau, vice president of the Biosemiotics Society, while he was in Singapore.

The 2021 Spring Semi Salon was held online, the first session on April 15. The theme of the spring was "Transformation and other semiotic mechanisms" and the presentations were held in English. According to the organizers, the series focused on the multiplicity of meaning-making mechanisms: small pieces of information, from which meanings are put together, come from diverse sources and sign systems. Each meaning has multiple meanings. So the main questions were: what kind of relations prevail between the sign systems? How can they even function together? Translation between sign systems is always a conversion.

Semiosalon's autumn series was entitled "Mytocatalysis", which is made up of two Greek words, μῦθος (myth) and κατάλυσις (catalysis). The title is inspired by Roland Barthes' works on myth. The choice of topics emphasized the role of myth in contemporary social discussions, where myth underpins both progressive and reactionary projects. The first four sessions of autumn took place online, the last, the fifth as a hybrid, i.e. you could also participate on site in Tartu.
