Writing on Water. The Sounds of Jewish Prayer

Author(s): Judit Nirán (Frigyesi) / Language(s): English

Writing on Water grasps the phenomenon of sound in prayer, that is, a meaning in sounds and soundscapes, and a musical essence in the act of praying. The impetus for the book arose from the author’s fieldwork among traditional Jews during the era of communism in Budapest and Prague. In that period the Jewish religion and Jewishness in general were supressed and rituals became semi-secret and turned inward. The book is a witness to these communities and their rituals, but it goes beyond documentation. The uniqueness of the sounds of the rituals compelled the author to try to comprehend how melodies and soundscapes became the sustaining/protective environment, as well as the vehicle, for the expression of a world-orientation—in a situation where open discourse was inconceivable. The book is based on extensive interviews, musical recordings, photographs and scholarly analyses. It is unique in its choice of communities, its wealth of original documents, and its novel interpretation of sound.Writing on Water is creative non-fiction. The presentation is evocative and poetic, but at the same time it transmits knowledge. The book can aid research and serve in courses in philosophy, religion, music, ethnomusicology, anthropology, aesthetics, Jewish studies, folklore, oral history, and performance studies. It is also a work of art and literature.

Олександр Шумський. Життя, доля, невідомі документи: дослідження, архівні матеріали

Author(s): Yuriy Ivanovich Shapoval / Language(s): Ukrainian

This is the first book, devoted to the life, activities and tragic fate of Oleksandr Shumskyi (1890-1946). The former socialist-revolutionist, later the leader of the “Borotbists” party, and then a member of the Bolshevik party, People's Commissar of Education in 1919 and 1924-1927, he remained a Ukrainian patriot, and often went “against the flow” of official policy. It is not uncommon for the communist regime to have made it, quite by the definition of his contemporaries, rather non-human: at first, O. Shumsky was sent for a ten-year exile, and then he was brutally murdered. The publication contains unique documents of the communist secret services, as well as the other archival documents never published. The book is intended for a wide range of readers.

Партійний «націоналіст». Парадокси Петра Шелеста

Author(s): Yuriy Ivanovich Shapoval / Language(s): Ukrainian

Petro Shelest has a special place in the political history of Ukraine of the XX century. Having gone through a difficult life path, in 1963 he became the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine. He supported Khrushchev and his political line, but he was among those who brought L. Brezhnev to power. He opposed the "Prague Spring" of 1968 and at the same time he blocked the total suppression of dissent in Ukraine. He recognized Stalin's authority and at the same time he demanded that the Moscow leadership adhere to the officially declared principles in relations between the centre and the then union republics. He was against the dismantling of the USSR and at the same time he contributed to the strengthening of Ukrainian national traditions, respect for Ukraine's past. What is the secret of such Petro Shelest’s duality? Who and how created for him the image of an "excessive" Ukrainian patriot and even a "nationalist"? How did his fate develop after he was sent for a "promotion" to Moscow and then subjected to political and ideological ostracism?

Underground za drutami. Nieformalne ruchy młodzieżowe w PRL i wybranych krajach bloku wschodniego (1980–1989)

Author(s): Andrzej Kobus / Language(s): Polish

The monograph entitled Underground behind the Wires is devoted to informal youth movements active in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe in the 1980s. The author centres on the countries such as Poland, Czechoslovakia, the German Democratic Republic and the Soviet Union. The monograph sketches the emergence and development of musical subcultures as well as pro-environmental and pacifist youth circles from the aforementioned countries. The progression of informal youth religious movements, both connected with Christianity and Eastern religions, is also described. Particular emphasis is placed on the issues of contacts and cooperation between the circles in question, especially during the crisis and erosion of the communist system in the countries of The Eastern Bloc. The work closes with the elaboration of the position of youth subcultures during the period of political transformations that took place in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe in the 1990s. The content of the monograph is enriched by the visual material in a form of photographs depicting representatives of particular youth subcultures from the discussed Eastern Bloc countries. The security organs were interested in the activities of the circles under discussion, which is illustrated with the scans of the relevant documents.

Ruszkik, haza!

Author(s): Ilona, L. Juhász / Language(s): Hungarian

This book summarises the results of a research undertaken by the Centre for Ethnology of the Forum Minority Research Institute in Komárno. The research work assisted by external collaborators, was carried out in selected Hungarian-populated municipalities in Southern Slovakia. The research was not designed to exactly reconstruct the events of the 1968 invasion, but to examine what local memory has preserved at the micro level about the Soviet occupation. How did the informants experience the events of that time as eyewitnesses, and what memory have people born later kept of the stories they heard from their parents or others. With a few exceptions, no hostile comments were made about the invading Soviet army. In general, it can be said that many of them relieved the Soviet soldiers of responsibility because, in their opinion, they had followed orders and could do nothing against it, they had to come here. Informants viewed in positive terms that the Soviet soldiers helped unified agricultural cooperatives with agricultural work and in other areas as well, and last but not least, “we could bargain with them,” they had cheap access to fuel, various technical items etc. In summary, the vast majority of informants do not see the 1968 invasion as a tragic event, they are much more preoccupied with today’s real problems (or those considered real due to media influence) such as migration or unemployment. Many feel somewhat nostalgic about the period following 1968 when life was better, and they claim they were not bothered by the Soviets. The memory of informants has been influenced by many things over time, especially newspapers, television, and radio, which may have significantly influenced and modified personal stories over the past decades.
