Textile material from Old Dongola: preliminary observations on trade and sartorial practices in the Ottoman period

Author(s): Magdalena M. Woźniak / Language(s): English Issue: XXIX/2020

The textiles presented in this paper come from the so-called House of the Mekk, which—judging by its intricate plan and size—was one of the most important compounds on the Old Dongola citadel during the Funj period (16th–18th centuries). The typology of the textiles presented is representative of an urban settlement, and two case studies, piece-dyed blue cottons and fabrics decorated with plaid-effect pattern in white and blue, are discussed in greater detail. The textile analysis is complemented by an assessment of various written sources (court registers, traveler’s accounts), which can produce information about trade routes and goods, and also offer a preliminary picture of the sartorial practices of the elite in Old Dongola during the Ottoman period.

Author(s): Albina Stanislavovna Bessonova,Vladimir Aleksandrovich Viktorovich / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1/2022

The article presents the facts that contradict A. S. Syrovatko’s statement, which claims that the current territory of the Museum is not related to the Dostoevsky estate (The Unknown Dostoevsky. 2021. Vol. 8. No. 4). When studied objectively, the objects found during the excavations do not contradict the presence of “traces of Dostoevsky.” The so-called memorial period of estate ownership by the writer’s parents, which lasted only seven years, was unable to leave too many traces, and the objects found by archaeologists in the 18th — early 19th centuries could have been used by the Dostoevsky family up to 1830s. Additional arguments are introduced to resolve the dispute: the result of the dendrological examination and written sources (previously known and recently discovered), namely, boundary plans, memoirs and diaries of A. M. Dostoevsky, family correspondence. The proposed comprehensive approach and a comparison of all the currently available sources, allows us to attribute the location of the Dostoevsky manor house to the preserved wing where the museum was recently opened. In connection with the problem of identification of the museum house, the hypotheses of other authors are considered (T. N. Dementieva and L. A. Tarasova, L. A. Voronkina) about the cardinal changes that took place in the architecture of the manor Darovoe at different times. Sources indicate, on the contrary, a certain continuity in the development of the estate under all three of its owners: the Khotyaintsev, Dostoevsky and Ivanov families. The key factor is the location of two “mounds” under the lime trees as “green canteens” tied to the manor house, and on the other side, the border between the landowner’s estate and peasant homesteads remained unchanged (as confirmed by archival documents and the boundary wall and moat preserved). Conservative localization is characteristic of the life in a noble estate, once and forever inscribed in the surrounding landscape. Taking into account the experience of their predecessors, the Dostoevskys and Ivanovs did not make radical changes to the space inhabited before them, and their house did not change its location.

Author(s): Tatyana S. Minaeva,Nikita A. Khrebtov / Language(s): Russian Issue: 4/2022

The article analyzes legal normative documents and acts to characterize the joint activities of the customs and military departments in the organization of customs supervision during the reign of Peter the Great. The research novelty of the article is in the fact that it is the first special study of this issue, which reveals the historical reasons that led to the involvement of military personnel in the activities of customs officers, determines the forms of customs supervision in which streltsy, soldiers, and their commanders participated, and identifies problems that existed in the activities of customs or sea and land outposts and prevented successful implementation of the customs policy. The authors conclude that the increase in the effectiveness of customs supervision during the reign of Peter the Great, in addition to the gradual reorganization of the customs system and introducing the practice of analyzing the activities of customs and outposts, was also facilitated by the use of military personnel for guard duty, guarding outposts, and conducting relevant investigations, as well as by the adoption of legislative acts aimed at strengthening the discipline and responsibility of army and customs officers. The relevance of the study is determined by the importance of using historical experience for organizing joint work of various departments and paramilitary organizations in order to counter threats to the country’s economic security.

Author(s): Anna S. Stepanova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1/2022

The article is devoted to the study of the role and modification of the Aristotelian principle of ars imitatur naturam in the formation of the concept of the Czech thinker, teacher, and theologian Jan Amos Comenius. The variety of approaches of Protestant thinkers to Aristotle's principle, born in the discussion, allowed Comenius to address it critically, perceiving it comprehensively and extending the concept of art to the sphere of education. Campanella's ideas moved Comenius to remove the veneer of indeterminacy from nature, promoting an understanding of it as a friendly and creative beginning. The author notes the peculiarity of Comenius' interpretation of this principle, giving it the meaning of universal nature-humanitarian mechanism which suited his concept of pan-sophia to the fullest extent. Comenius and G. Skovoroda, who developed the concepts of kinship and wisdom in the light of the ideas of enlightenment, thus laying the foundations of humanistic philosophy and pedagogy of the New Age and Enlightenment era, make an analogy between the interpretations of the Aristotelian thesis.

Author(s): Ekaterina G. Andreeva,Ekaterina V. Lankova,Dmitrii I. Maiatskii / Language(s): Russian Issue: 4/2022

The novelty of the study lies in examining the question of how the figure of the Russian Emperor, Peter the Great, is represented in the mass and popular scholarly literature of China and some English-speaking western countries (primarily Great Britain and the USA). The relevance of the study can be seen in the approaching 350th birth anniversary of the tzar, as well as in the growing interest and activities all over the world concerning the issue of perception of striking cultural and historical symbols of some nationalities in the media and media-related information space of other countries. The paper presents a review of the data about Peter the Great drawn from popular books and Internet publications widely available to readers in China and in the English-speaking world. The results of the comparative analysis carried out in the paper reveal both similarities and differences in the ways the figure of Peter the Great is shown and perceived in the East and the West. The authors make an attempt to identify the possible reasons for the main discrepancies, including some peculiarities that can be considered as characterizing the mentality of the Chinese and Western people.

Perpetuiranje rodnih stereotipa u hrvatskim rječnicima

Perpetuiranje rodnih stereotipa u hrvatskim rječnicima

Author(s): Tatjana Pišković / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 2/2016

In animistic speculative theories about the origin of grammatical gender, which are formed in the 18th century by J. G. Herder and J. Ch. Adelung, grammatical gender is interpreted as the result of manʼs efforts to make the world around them individualized, personified, animate and sexualized. In the 19th century, Jacob Grimm develops that idea, arguing that grammatical gender is an imaginational reflection and an extension of the natural gender. Moreover, Grimm perpetuates and canonizes that problematic thesis in his grammar of German language. There are a number of grammarians of English language that explain the gender of nouns for inanimate by analogy to the numerous stereotypes about male and female physical characteristics and sexual behavior. While Croatian grammariansʼ interpretation of the grammatical category of gender has never been so profane, Croatian lexicographers enrolled many gender prejudices in their definitions of nouns for women. Based on the lexicographic definition of nouns for women and men, the paper will point out how the Croatian dictionaries produce, perpetuate and authorize gender stereotypes.

Author(s): Marco Cassioli / Language(s): Italian Issue: 4/2015

Author(s): Lora Nenkovska / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2015

This article aims to present the specifics in the illumination of four liturgical manuscripts, written and decorated on the territory of Romania. This topic includes only few of the manuscripts written in the Balkan workshops during the 17-th and the beginning of the 18-th century. The features of their decoration make all of them part of the group of the so-called luxury codeces. The focus of the article is a phenomenon found in the decoration system of these four manuscripts. It consist in the extending of the function of the initial letter which adds new connotations to its initial meaning. The initial letter in the given manuscripts works as a decorative element strongly related with the meaning of the liturgical text that begins with it. This process took place in the Principality of Wallachia and was a result of the work of two Greek clerics on the territory of the Romanian principality – metropolitan Matei from Mira and bishop Luca from Buzău both of them were and skilled illuminators and authors of text, who left several well prepared dicipals who continued to work in principality of Wallachia and Moldavia.

Author(s): Octavia Nedelcu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 3/2014

JANISSARIES AND CONFLICTS OVER RURAL LANDS IN THE VIDIN REGION (1730-1810)

JANISSARIES AND CONFLICTS OVER RURAL LANDS IN THE VIDIN REGION (1730-1810)

Author(s): İrfan Kokdaş / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

The Vidin region has attracted much scholarly attention, particularly due to the bloody uprisings in the area around the middle of the nineteenth century. For a long period, Balkan historians have understood this mid-nineteenth century crisis as an inevitable consequence of a Bulgarian national awakening. Although the recent scholarship challenges the nationalist narrative, it continues to ignore the complexities of the socio-legal structures in the Vidinese hinterland, which had developed in the course of the eighteenth century, and reduces all conflict lines to the duality of interests between peasants and proprietors. Going beyond the dualistic narratives of exploitation, this study aims to historicize the land question in the Balkans by presenting the Janissaries both as actors of the Ottoman military establishment in the Vidin region and as rural investors who enjoyed benefits from and shaped the workings of the area’s land regime thanks to their own networks and the state’s policies. By doing so, it contextualizes the ruptures and continuities in landholding patterns, and also highlights the rural entrepreneurship of the Janissaries, who in Ottoman/Middle Eastern scholarship have generally been portrayed as active historical agents of city-based riots and urban-centered commercial activities.

USING THE UKRAINIAN ARCHIVES FOR THE STUDY OF JANISSARY NETWORKS IN THE NORTHERN BLACK SEA: RESEARCH PERSPECTIVES AND CHALLENGES

USING THE UKRAINIAN ARCHIVES FOR THE STUDY OF JANISSARY NETWORKS IN THE NORTHERN BLACK SEA: RESEARCH PERSPECTIVES AND CHALLENGES

Author(s): Anna Sydorenko / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

This article deals with the primary sources in the Ukrainian archives which pertain to the establishment and function of the networks of the Janissaries of the Crimean Khanate with their neighbors in the northern Black Sea frontier region. It demonstrates the extent to which it is possible to use this archival material in order to study the history of relations between the Janissaries of the Black Sea port-cities and the main powers of the steppeland, namely the Zaporozhian Cossacks and the Ukrainians of the Left Bank Hetmanate. The paper raises questions about the ways in which these groups were interacting with each other and at what levels, also focusing on how these established networks of the great steppe region were affected and transformed by the Ottoman-Russian struggle and the gradual expansion of the Russians to the south.
