Author(s): Adolfo R. POSADA / Language(s): Spanish Issue: 2/2020

Obraz Niemca w oczach Polaka, obraz Polaka w oczach Niemca... Studium nad staropolskimi traktatami kosmologicznymi przełomu XV i XVI wieku

Author(s): Robert K. Zawadzki / Language(s): Polish Issue: 22/2022

In this article the author discusses scientific and cultural Polish-German relations at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. These considerations are based on the old Polish cosmographers: Wojciech of Brudzew, Jan of Głogów, Wawrzyniec Korwin and Jan of Stobnica. These works show that German scholars were regarded as scientific authorities and were an inspiration and source of knowledge for Polish scholars. However, the cosmological treatise by Jan of Głogów shows that Poles associated Germans with vice and crime, as evidenced by the example of Pontius Pilate, the governor of Judea, who was attributed German origins. The picture of Germans and their lands painted by Old-Polish cosmographers is apparently based on ancient and later authors, especially Solinus, Strabon and Aeneas Sylvius Piccolomini. Significant excerpts from these works were also made available to Polish readers to show them a multifaceted panorama of the Germanic lands. Wawrzyniec Korwin’s treatise also contains the opinions of Germans about Poland and Poles. The western neighbors of Poland–Lithuania were particularly keen on Cracow and its famous university and academic staff. The two nations were undeniably fascinated by each other’s science.

Дослідження життя і творчості хроніста Алессандро Ґваньїнівід середини ХХ століття (польська, українська і російська історіографія)

Author(s): Oleh Diachok / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 20/2020

The paper is dedicated to the analysis of life and work of Aleksander Gwagnin, a Polish chronicler from the 16th century, on the basis of Slavic historical-philological studies. The author distinguishes two periods of interest in Gwagnin: in the first one (1960-1971) mainly works on his biography were written, Russian researchers made a positive verification of the authenticity of Chronicle of European Sarmatia - Gwagnin’s major work, which was also appreciated as a valuable source of knowledge by historians from Western Europe. In the second period of research (from the 1970s), Chronicle… became an object of a comprehensive historical and historiographical analysis, for example the question of Gwagnin’s authorship was considered. On the basis of new, critical translations (partly in Russian and entirely in Ukrainian with comments), thorough textological studies of the work were conducted.

The Ancient Sarmatians and the „Sarmatism” in Modern Eastern Europe (the Slovak Case)

The Ancient Sarmatians and the „Sarmatism” in Modern Eastern Europe (the Slovak Case)

Author(s): Dimitar Yordanov Dimitrov / Language(s): English Issue: 20/2020

The paper is dedicated to the development of Sarmatism on Slovak lands in the period between the 16th and 19th centuries. At the same time the Sarmatian movement developed in Poland and on Slovak lands, which belonged to the Habsburg Empire. Sarmatism was connected with a particular interest in antiquity during the Baroque period, with the birth of Slavism and Pan-Slavism, as well as the beginnings of the national revival movement. Moreover, it was used as a historical argument to prove the laudable past of Slavs, especially Slovaks, by both groups of intelligentsia from the period of Baroque on Slovak lands: Protestants and Catholics.

Libros de viajes. A Study of Castilian Travel Accounts from the 15th Century on the Eve of the Great Geographical Discoveries

Libros de viajes. A Study of Castilian Travel Accounts from the 15th Century on the Eve of the Great Geographical Discoveries

Author(s): Łukasz Burkiewicz / Language(s): English Issue: 19/2021

At the beginning of the 15th century, Castile, like other countries located on the Iberian Peninsula, was struggling with a range of internal problems. Before it reached – together with Aragon – greatness as the Monarchy of the Catholic Kings, it had already taken an active interest in far-away lands, and its representatives made distant journeys, which they described in detail in their travel accounts. Over the course of the 16th and 17th centuries, Spain became a great power both externally and internally, and this period is often called the Golden Ages (siglos de oro) of Spanish literature. This was undoubtedly the period in which literature written on the Iberian Peninsula itself reached its highest level of excellence. Moreover, some literary genres, especially historiography and accounts of travels, conquests, and discoveries, became a tool of Charles V’s and Philip II’s official propaganda: they glorified their empire and passed on the message of Spain’s special role in the world and the greatness of its discoveries and conquests. Against this background, the article discusses the role and history of the publication of two fifteenth-century Castilian travel accounts, or libros de viajes, which report the expeditions of Ruy González de Clavijo and Pero Tafur. Their narratives were key elements of the image Spanish rulers crafted for themselves during both the Habsburg dynasty of the 16th and 17th centuries and the Bourbon dynasty of the 19th century.

Author(s): Mihai Reja / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 10-12/2022

Although it will know a strong but difficult flowering, between the 7th and 18th centuries, Islamic music, since the foundation of the Islamic cult, will not only be neglected, but also condemned (by some Muslim circles). Music will appear gradually (as a sign of revolt against all the canons imposed by the followers of the cult) and will impose itself as an art and as a privilege starting from the 7th century, culminating, as one of the most important places in everyday life, with the end of the 18th century.

SAMOTNA WYSPA CZY WOLNI WŚRÓD WOLNYCH? OBRAZ WOLNYCH REPUBLIK W DYSKURSIE POLITYCZNYM RZECZYPOSPOLITEJ OBOJGA NARODÓW

Author(s): Anna Grześkowiak-Krwawicz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2023

Researchers have long drawn attention to the deep conviction of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth nobility about the uniqueness of their country and its freedoms. Contrary to what is sometimes believed, it was not an expression of Sarmatian megalomania, which made itself felt in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, this opinion was propagated at least from the middle of the sixteenth century. Nor was it some kind of Polish peculiarity, citizens of other free commonwealths said and probably thought about their freedoms in a similar way. Already in the 15th century, the inhabitants of Florence considered their republic to be unique and extraordinary, precisely because of its freedom. The Venetians, and later the Dutch and the English, assessed their country and freedom in a similar way. The sentence: “there is only one kingdom on earth where freedom has found a home” contrary to appearances does not refer to the Sarmatian Commonwealth, but to Hanoverian England, and its author believed that his homeland was the only country and the British were the only people who can truly say about himself: “we are free.” Noble citizens of Polish Republic entered this discourse early, even before the first free election. The author discusses the history of this discourse in the times of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, stating that, contrary to the references in the 16th century, and even at the beginning of the 17th century, later references to republics other than the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth or ancient republics (especially Rome) were not numerous and quite superficial, their authors generally did not know much about the mentioned countries, but they had no doubts that they share a certain similarity with the Commonwealth, which could be described as a community of freedom. Because this very motif, also important earlier, became dominant in the 17th century and the first half of the 18 century. The crisis and ossification of political reflection, combined with a decrease in interest in the outside world, meant that more extensive references to other countries and their political solutions no longer appeared in noble political discussions. Their participants, however, continued to include their country in a fairly elite community of European republics and still, regardless of all social, religious and political differences, of which they were often unaware, they still considered them their “companions.”

FEATURES OF THE HISTORICAL VOCABULARY IN THE FORMATION OF THE SYSTEM OF CATEGORIES AND MOTIVATION

FEATURES OF THE HISTORICAL VOCABULARY IN THE FORMATION OF THE SYSTEM OF CATEGORIES AND MOTIVATION

Author(s): H. Kocherha / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

The article characterizes a word formation, in particular a verbal one, which in the history of its development appeals to the Proto-Slavic heritage and produces the fundamental features of derivation. Transformations of verb-suffix word formation, which is an indicator of segmental changes in categorical, motivational, and semantic-cognitive aspects, have been clarified. It is noteworthy that the word on the basis of which the derivative is formed, since its connections with several creative ones are equally possible, because the specificity of word formation is in its multifacetedness, in the versatility of its connections, and therefore any one-sided consideration of word formation processes ceases to reflect the actual state of affairs and significantly limits its own problematic of word creation. In order to analyze the actual material, the methodological apparatus of Ukrainian derivation (word formation) was applied, other linguistic methods – descriptive with the methods of classification (systematization of the language material), comparative-historical with the methods of etymology, general scientific (induction, deduction, classification, systematization, modeling), cognitive-onomasiological, which makes it possible to characterize the grammatical system of the Old Ukrainian literary language of the 14th – 17th centuries, in particular its word-forming subsystem at the functional and motivational levels. The purpose of the article is to find out the categorical-motivational and structural-word-forming features of the word-forming processes of the denominative verb derivatives in the Old Ukrainian language of the 14th – 17th centuries. The description of the morphological system and structure of the Ukrainian language, based on the main fundamental principles of motivation and categorization of grammar, will contribute to the creation of a conceptually whole, consistent description of the grammatical systems of the modern Slavic languages, the development of typological studies in the grammatical Slavic studies [Gramatiki, 2013, p. 14]. The motivational processes of the Old Ukrainian denominative verbs of the 15th - 17th centuries can be traced both in propositional-dictum and associative-terminal motivations, where the usual connections of the motivating word and their reproduction in the semantics of the derivative are an important feature of the semantic structure of derivatives. Cognitive and onomasiological analysis of the denominative verbs in the segment of functionality and categorization will serve as a perspective for further scientific studies. The history of the derivational processes of the language of the Ukrainian nation, recorded in the written records of the Old Ukrainian period of the 14th – 18th centuries, presents the stages of formation of the verbal word-formation system and demonstrates the implementation of those changes that format the grammatical structure of the language at a certain historical stage.

Zooarchaeology of livestock and game in medieval and early modern Estonia

Zooarchaeology of livestock and game in medieval and early modern Estonia

Author(s): Eve Rannamäe,Ülle Aguraiuja-Lätti / Language(s): English Issue: 3S/2023

In this article, zooarchaeological evidence from 37 medieval and early modern sites in Estonia were assembled and examined. The analysis of over 69 000 mammal remains gave a comprehensive overview of the production and consumption of animal resources in the 13th to 18th century castles, towns, rural settlements, and one monastery. The focus was on domestic livestock: cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and horses. Cattle remains were most abundant, confirming it as the primary animal resource in the study period. Morphometrical analysis and tooth wear study supported the historical knowledge of a stronger tradition of draught oxen in the north and a possible focus on dairy husbandry in the south. Sheep and goat husbandry also had several purposes: kill-off times indicated lamb consumption and keeping the herd for wool and reproduction. Pigs, on the other hand, were raised only as a food resource. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses revealed differences in grazing areas and feed types between species and geographical regions. Compared to the main livestock, horses and also wild mammals had insignificant roles in providing primary resources but immense importance in manifesting status (horses and hunting) or in use for work and military purposes (horses). Overall, the animal husbandry of the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period developed towards the innovations and improvements of modern times, with native breeds being one example of the heritage of the past.

Pets or functional animals: dogs and cats in medieval and early modern Estonia

Pets or functional animals: dogs and cats in medieval and early modern Estonia

Author(s): Sander Nuut,Eve Rannamäe,Mari Tõrv,Ülle Aguraiuja-Lätti / Language(s): English Issue: 3S/2023

The role of dogs and cats in the history of the human-animal relationship has been variable. They have served as pets, working animals, useful commensals, subjects of worship and sacrifice, and providers of resources, such as skin and meat. These roles have also been more or less visible in Estonian archaeological material. Here, our focus is on the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period (13th to 18th centuries), which was the time of urbanisation and widening contacts as well as wars and famines. During this time of change, also the roles of dogs and cats as companion and commensal species changed. With over 700 specimens from all over Estonia, we aimed to explore the presence of dogs and cats in archaeological material, their keeping conditions, and their economic use. For dogs, essential questions also involved the different (morpho)types and their possible roles. The study confirmed that new dog types emerged in Estonia from the early 13th century. Furthermore, different site types, specifically castle and urban material, contained dogs with significantly diverse sizes, possibly due to their functionality. There is evidence of the economic value of both cats and dogs in the expression of cut marks that could be related to food waste and fur trading. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis confirmed the assumption that dogs mainly ate food scraps and leftovers, including freshwater and marine resources. Documented pathologies were rare, leaving the question of caring for or neglecting these animals open.

Author(s): Zhulieta Gyuleva,Deyan Rabovyanov / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2021

The archaeological site near today’s village of Ivancha, Veliko Tarnovo province, was registered during a field survey along the Nabucco gas pipeline route. Its research was carried out during the work on the so-called “Balkan Stream”. Nearly ten decares were studied by the methods of archaeology. Traces of a settlement from the Ottoman period (16th – first half of the 17th centuries) were found over the territory of the site. 97 pits, 33 kilns, 5 hearths, over 60 service buildings and dwellings, and 14 Christian graves were explored. A vast amount of pottery fragments, a few faience vessels, animal bones, over 50 coins, and numerous other finds related to the population’s life during this period were found. The village is well-known from the Ottoman tax registers as one of the largest settlements of the Sandjak of Nicopolis.

Author(s): Milena Petkova,Stefan Dimitrov / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2021

The Ottoman conquest of the Balkans and the Bulgarian lands, in particular, was followed by the migration of Muslim population from Asia Minor. A significant part of this population was the semi-nomadic groups of the Yörüks. The present paper traces back the stages of the Yörük colonization in Upper Thrace, which started with the Ottoman conquest of these territories. It reveals the changes regarding the establishment of a new settlement network and the process of demographic seizure of the territory under study. It discusses the old hypothesis of “depopulated” Thrace and the political events from the late medieval period and the first centuries of the Ottoman rule in the region.

Author(s): Krzysztof Pietkiewicz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 38/2021

The holdings of the Kórnik Library include a book of abstracts of lawsuits concerning the boundaries of estates in Greater Poland in the 15th–17th century, written in Latin. Its presumed author, the otherwise unknown Piotr Biernacki, had the ability to write in both the Latin and the Cyrillic alphabet. This article focuses on the reading and the palaeographic and linguistic analysis of several Latin sentences, one heading and more than 20 margin notes written in the Cyrillic alphabet. The Cyrillic handwriting found in the book is a Russian skoropis used in Ukrainian areas of Poland in the 17th century. When writing the Latin text with the Cyrillic alphabet, the author utilised the Polish language of the time in the reading of Latin. The cryptograms found in the book have a technical/informative nature and do not contribute any significant information to the text. In combination with the fact that the Cyrillic alphabet was not at all used in Greater Poland, the above suggests that the author was playing with the reader, who was thus forced to look for the meaning of the incomprehensible text.

DWIE NIDERLANDZKIE OPRAWY PLAKIETOWE W ZBIORACH BIBLIOTEKI KÓRNICKIEJ

Author(s): Tomasz Zuzek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 37/2020

This paper presents two rare 16th-century panel-stamped bindings from the collections of the Kórnik Library. Th e fi rst one, decorated with an impression of a panel depicting the personifi cation of the Christian virtue of Hope (Spes), protects the printed book published in 1545. Th e binding was made by a Netherlandish bookbinder working in Leuven, called Master IP, identifi ed with Jacob Pandelaert (d. ab. 1563). Th e second binding presents a Gothic motif of animals-in-foliage and protects a printed book published in 1550. Th e authorship of the panel (the so-called de profundis) is attributed to a bookbinder working in the town of ’s-Hertogenbosch (fr. Bois-le-Duc), Geraert van der Hatart (d. ab. 1540/1541). Both these bindings testify to the fact that the holdings of the Kórnik Library include gems of the West-European bookbinding craft .

Las Relaciones Geográficas del siglo XVI de Nueva España: Análisis del inédito "Mapa de Tequaltiche"

Author(s): Alberto Puig Carrasco / Language(s): Spanish Issue: 37/2023

During the year of 1577, the Council of the Indies sent a questionnaire to America to be answered by the Indian authorities. It was sent along with a written account and a painting of the area. Th anks to this, we have today a large documentary corpus, namely the Geographical Relations, which contains the map and written relations of Tequaltiche (Teocaltiche, Jalisco), one of the regional cabeceras de partido and which had great relevance during the Mixton War. Th e map, due to its recent discovery, is hitherto unpublished and has an essential importance to understand the historical evolution of the Altos de Jalisco during the sixteenth century. Th e Mixton War and its subsequent “pacifi cation”, as well as the control of the region during the Chichimeca War, mark the historical context in which this document is inserted. Th is, together with the fact that it presents the pre-Hispanic historical events, gives even greater importance to the map, since it allows to reconstruct to a certain extent the past of the Cazcanes from their point of view. In this paper, we will carry out the integral analysis of all the elements that make up the document, both external and internal, so that we can extract as much information as possible from it.
