Коя църква с патрон св. Георги е издигната през XVI век в Арбанаси?

Коя църква с патрон св. Георги е издигната през XVI век в Арбанаси?

Author(s): Hitko Vachev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2015

Nowadays in the south-western part of the village of Arbanassi there is a church whose patron is St. George. A lot of conservation and restoration work has been carried out in this church. Prior to this the church had been studied from an architectural point of view. It was established that the church was built during the first half of the 17th c. However, a recent study suggests that the church was built in the 16th c. Evidence in support of the earlier dating was found in the stylistic analysis of some of the mural decoration in the altar of the church and in the adjoining gallery. A more profound interpretation of the architecture of the church, the ascertained sequence of structuring the individual sections of the church, as well as the applied design solutions firmly refute the view that the first construction period of St. George’s Church can be dated to the 16th c. Indeed, in the 16th c. there was a church dedicated to St. George in the village of Arbanassi. This is the current chapel of St. Demetrius’ Church, which existed as an independent unit in the 16th c. This was attested during archaeological excavation works carried out inside the building and in the yard. The findings indicate that at about the mid-16th c. a church, consisting of an altar, nave and narthex was built. The studies of the surviving fragments from the earlier mural layer validate unambiguously the proposed dating. In the early 17th c. the existing St. George’s Church was reconstructed and was incorporated in the building of the newly erected St. Demetrius’ Church. As of 1621 the mural paintings inside were completed. Over the time the new patronof the church – St. Demetrius – gained currency. Therefore a new church, dedicated to St. George, was constructed lateron in the southwestern quarter of the village of Arbanassi.

Благоденстващите градове на средновековна Европа (На примера на няколко италиански града от края на XIII до началото на XV век)

In the present paper, on the basis of information from sources dating to the period from the end of the 13th century to the beginning of the 15th century (such as chronicles, town statutes, documents of guilds, etc.), an analysis is made of the policy followed by the authorities of several medieval Italian towns in the sphere of urban planning and development, organization of public services, maintaining of order and sanitation in public places. Part of the selected sources provides information on the attitude of medieval Italian city dwellers towards their towns and their communities. The sources under analysis show that the whole diversity of architectural and spatial solutions, the construction and maintenance of urban infrastructure, the keeping of public order and sanitation in the Italian towns in the Middle Ages, demanded from their inhabitants the exertion of joint efforts in order to ensure a harmonious and safe urban environment. All the aspects of urban life were strictly supervised, managed and controlled by the town authorities. They had to take care of everything: from the construction of reliable defences for the constantly growing towns in the form of new fortified walls, towers and gates, through the securing of free access and moving along the town streets and squares, the regulation of vehicles’ speed, the supply of enough quantity of drinking water, to the maintenance of public sanitation and the punishing of offenders. The legal regulations of the town authorities, which were brought to life by the problems of the daily routine in the medieval Italian towns, marked the gradual formation of a tradition of common occupation of the often limited urban space.

During the last few years, an attempt has been made in Bulgarian society to impose the con-tention that the Ottoman period is represented in the school history and civilizations textbooks through the definition “Ottoman Presence”. The present article seeks to provide a scientifically grounded review of the educational documentation concerning school history education, and in particular the history textbooks, to ascertain whether such a definition is present or absent

The study raises questions about the fate of the medieval Bulgarian fortresses and urban centers in the system of Ottoman provincial administration, which has repeatedly been discussed in Balkan and Ottoman studies. These debates are constantly related to the issues of continuity in the administration and ruling of the Bulgarian lands, evidenced in the territorial overlap of the medieval administrative structures with the new Ottoman ones, as well as in the names of the sanjaks, nahiyes and vilayets. One of the problems that is yet to be completely solved has to do with the medieval fortresses and settlements, registered with their pre-Ottoman names as important administrative centers in the system of Ottoman provincial administration (nahiyes, vilayets, kazas), but most likely destroyed during the conquest or earlier. New settlements are developing near them which have different names but the same administrative functions. Many of them are problematic to be localized, but for centuries, these “old” settlements and centers of power have been referred to in parallel with the “new” settlements as another name (nam-i diğer) for the respective administrative centers. The present study focuses on two of the examples of continuity and parallel designation of the “old”/“new” settlements – nahiye Ala Kinise (Kilisa)/ Osman Pazar and nahiye Hotaliç/ Servi (Selvi). These administrative-territorial units are typical of the Ottoman model of administration at local level, as well as regarding the presence of a particular continuity from the medieval Bulgarian state. The complex approach applied in the research and interpretation of the Ottoman register material allows us not only to trace the indications of continuity in the development of individual settlements, but also to understand the pre-Ottoman period of their existence within the medieval Bulgarian state. In a broader sense, it provides a real opportunity for a well-grounded reconstruction of the Ottoman model of power, demographic and economic control of the Bulgarian lands at local level.

Urban Planning and Urban Lots in Cluj during The Modern Period. A Historical-Archaeological Perspective on the Emmanuel de Martonne, Hermann Oberth and Gaál Gábor Streets

Urban Planning and Urban Lots in Cluj during The Modern Period. A Historical-Archaeological Perspective on the Emmanuel de Martonne, Hermann Oberth and Gaál Gábor Streets

Author(s): Oana Toda,Keve László,Florin Mărginean,Zsolt Csók / Language(s): English Issue: 59/2022

Over the past two decades, the accelerated development of historical urban centers in Transylvania has determined an increase in archaeological rescue interventions. The phenomenon was also documented in Cluj‑Napoca. However, the legislative framework and the attitude of local decision‑makers remain deficient in protecting and capitalizing on the built historical heritage and archaeological remains in the urban area. The lack of complex research programs focusing on Transylvanian urban environments has also enabled widespread ignorance regarding the archaeological remains of the modern period. The development of the entire field of study of urban historical archaeology has thus been inhibited. This field of archaeology provides the theoretical framework and methodological background for the research carried out in the second part of 2021 on three of the secondary streets of the historical center of Cluj: Gaál Gábor St., Hermann Oberth St. and Emmanuel de Martonne St.The contextualization of the discoveries in the three streets adjacent to the famous Platea Luporum intra muros (Farkas utca, Mihail Kogălniceanu St.) has facilitated the analysis of urban planning efforts throughout the modern age, as well as their antecedents and origins. The research has highlighted different situations for each of the streets in question, regarding their period of origin, possible mutations, and connections with the associated urban lots. Emmanuel de Martonne St. is a late modern creation, planned and executed in two stages during the second half of the nineteenth century. Unlike it, Hermann Oberth St. is considerably earlier in date, possibly medieval, with a well‑defined and documented trajectory since the seventeenth century. Furthermore, Gaál Gábor St. was originally an obscure footpath that originated in the first half of the eighteenth century. It now has a partially altered trajectory due to urban systematization works dated to the beginning of the twentieth century. Their simultaneous research has allowed us to follow a long process of reconfiguration and multiplication of the street network in this micro‑area of historical Cluj.

O vjerodostojnosti narodnog predanja o sarajevskom šejhu Ajni-dedeu

Author(s): Nedim Zahirović / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 43/2022

Oral tradition marks the year 866 A.H. (1461/62 A.D.) as the year of death of two dervishes from Sarajevo, Ayni Dede and Şemsi Dede. Based on the quotations from the work Silsiletü ʼl-muḳarrebīn ve menāḳıbu ʼl-mütteḳīn by Muniri- effendi, the Mufti of Belgrade, it can be ascertained that Ayni Dede passed away a whole century later, between 1563 and 1565. In his youth Ayni Dede worked as a tailor. From Sarajevo he went to Istanbul where he started to specialize in Sufism with the sheikh of dervishes Erdebili Sinan- effendi. During his stay in Istanbul, he had the opportunity to get close to the powerful Grand Vizier, Ibrahim Pasha. After his return to Sarajevo, he probably became the sheikh of Gazijska tekija (tekke). The latter dervish mentioned in oral tradition, Şemsi Dede, most likely did not exist.

Author(s): Elena Rodica Colta / Language(s): Romanian Issue: XXVI/2021

At first, monks brought manuscripts and theological writings especially in Latin, but their interest had very quicly widened to books in the field of social sciences (history, literature) and natural sciences (mathematics, chemistry, physics). The broadening of the Franciscan’s area of study and interest in the 18th century is partially a consequence of the encyclopedism that was present in that period of time. In the Arad county there have been two large libraries: in Radna and in Arad. Because of the vow of poverty, these libraries were actually “moving”, active libraries, meaning that copies or even some of the volumes were passed on (to the convent in Deva, to the monastery of Lăzarea, etc.). However, for more than two centuries, these books had been studied here and the monks who were prepared enough passed their knowledge to the local population. At first, monks brought manuscripts and theological writings especially in Latin, but their interest had very quicly widened to books in the field of social sciences (history, literature) and natural sciences (mathematics, chemistry, physics). THE HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE OF THE GRAND DUCHY OF LITHUANIA IN THE SOUTH OF UKRAINE: TYAHIN FORTRESS

THE HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE OF THE GRAND DUCHY OF LITHUANIA IN THE SOUTH OF UKRAINE: TYAHIN FORTRESS

Author(s): Svitlana Biliaieva,Natalia Danute Bimbirayte / Language(s): English Issue: 48/2022

The article is devoted to the results of the research of the fortress Tyagin, built by the Lithuanian Grand Duke Vytautas on the territory of the island Bolshoye Gorodishche in the late 14th to early 15th century. The archaeological materials provided valuable information about the syncretism of the complex of monuments on the island, the typology, layout and size of the fortress. It was one of the earliest stone castle-type fortresses on the northern Black Sea coast, a part of the defensive line of the southern borders of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The fortress’ defensive system included a synthesis of defensive architectural elements, ranging from timber-engineered structures known from Old Russian times to stone walls and buttresses of a new level of fortification in Europe. The fortress was armed with artillery and edged weapons, the main type being crossbows, which were widespread in Lithuania. The fortress of Tyagin was situated at the crossroads of trade routes between the East and the West, at the crossroads of the custom. The artifacts testify to the presence of Lithuanian cultural objects, Genoese influence, contact with Crimea, and trade and economic relations with Poland. The monument is an integral part of the cultural heritage of Lithuania and Ukraine.

Rukopisna baština srednjovjekovne Bosne i Hercegovine kao primjer kulturnih odnosa između Istoka i Zapada

Author(s): Emilian Szymon Prałat / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 2/2012

The article is devoted to the legacy of selected manuscripts from Bosnia and Herzegovina, formed before the fall of Bosnia in 1463, which is the reflection of the cultural wealth that was created in the area throughout history. At the same time in the texts of manuscripts, their illuminations, we can see elements from different traditions, which main determinant was confession (Slavia Latina, Slavia Orthodoxa). This specific feature will be confronted with the contemporary political and cultural situation of the Polish Kingdom and slightly later Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (Polish Kingdom and Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Res Publica Utriusque Nationis). Example of Hrvoje Vukcic Hrvatinic Missal and the chapel at Lublin Castle is the best paradigm of vital currents associated with infiltration of various ethnic groups and their nurtured artistic traditions. This fact made those two dualistic countries significant centers of art and cultural communication nodes with an extremely strong influence on Europe at this time. A special place in the article will take analyze the cultural perspective and illumination, taking into account the border nature of Balkans art, its homo-and heterogeneity. On this occasion, may be necessary to appeal to the complicated political history of the area, its multiculturalism and multi-confessional nature. Article will also attempt to bring the problem of South Slavic miniature painting, in a little present in the minds of western researchers, which will allow for fuller and more coherent view of the artistic map of Europe in the Middle Ages. The basic argument for the desirability of taken theme is its validity from the standpoint of cultural reconstruction of the full picture of South Slavs in the medieval period, which is an important aspect of miniature paintings, tested and well known in relation to Western Europe. Synchronous perspective of history and culture of BiH and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth will find the universal elements, as well as those who contributed to the uniqueness of the analyzed area.

Религиозната почит към Рилския светец в контекста на османските завоевания на Балканите

Author(s): Venelin Grudkov / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2019

The focus of the study are two texts from the hagiographic cycle for Saint John of Rila. The first one is Vladislav Gramatik’s Rila Story, which represents the act of return of the saint’s relics to the Rila Monastery in 1469 as the first attempt for Balkan Orthodox consolidation after the Ottoman conquest. The second text is The Life with a Short Encomium by Demetrius Cantacuzenus where the historical exposition examines the reasons for the destruction of the Balkan Orthodox civilization.

Западните Балкани (земите на Албания) през XV в. в текстовете на западни пътешественици

Author(s): Ivayla Popova / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2019

The purpose of the present article is to scrutinize some curious details concerning the Balkans to be found in the western travel notes during the 15th century. Our attention was primarily concentrated on the data provided by Roberto Sanseverino, Alessandro Ariosto, Santo Brasca, Bernard von Breidenbach, Konrad Grьnemberg, and Arnold von Harff. The travellers listed above provide rather intriguing information concerning specific customary practices, language, religion, manufacture, costume, agriculture, trade, wine production, etc. In this study we focus on data about the lands of Albania and their cities, on the texts describing actual political situation, there included the administration and taxation, the fear of the Ottoman omnipotence, the eventual military opportunities, coeval events or such of the recent past.

Особености на ранноосманските еднокуполни джамии в България

Author(s): Zhulieta Gyuleva / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2017

The main characteristic features of the Early Ottoman single-domed mosques are well known. This type of mosque was particularly widespread in the whole of the Anatolian region and the Balkans. A few Early Ottoman single-domed mosques are known from Bulgaria – the mosques in Yambol, Stara Zagora, Veliko Tarnovo, Kyustendil, Karlovo, etc. Among them, Eski Mosque in Yambol and Ahmet Bey Mosque in Kyustendil deserve special attention for their rare layouts. Despite that, the characteristic features that put them in the frame of the Early Ottoman period are not well illustrated. The analysis of their layouts, porticoes, positions of the minaret, building materials, etc. shows that the single-domed mosques from the Early Ottoman era in the Bulgarian lands followed the development of the general planning characteristics and constructional techniques of the period. The creation of rare types like Eski Mosque in Yambol and Ahmet Bey Mosque in Kyustendil, realized only a few decades earlier in North-West Anatolia, shows the connection between Anatolia and the Balkans.

Православни архиереи, свещеници, енориаши в османски документи от фонда “Пископос калеми”

Author(s): Krasimira Mutafova / Language(s): Turkish,English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2017

The present paper is based on selected documents (sultan’s orders, patriarchal and metropolitan requests – arzuhal, requests by parishioners, collective petitions – mahzar – of metropolitans and bishops of various dioceses, different types of income and expense excerpts, etc.) from the partly published fund Piskopos kalemi of the Istanbul Ottoman Archives. The author focuses her research interest on the specificity of the relations between the representatives of the higher clergy as well as on the relations between the parish clergy and their dependent congregations, on the one hand, and the Orthodox bishops, on the other. The result of the intrigues and conflicts between the three sides of the Orthodox community (prelates, priests, and parishioners), eloquently attested in the commented documents, is the direct interference of the Ottoman authority in spheres, which were legally protected against such interference.

IBRAHIM PASHA: A CHRISTIAN HERO IN THE OTTOMAN PALACE

IBRAHIM PASHA: A CHRISTIAN HERO IN THE OTTOMAN PALACE

Author(s): Fahd Mohammed Taleb Al-Olaqi / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2022

The article examines the representation of the Turkish pioneer personage called Ibrahim Pasha (1493–1536) in Elkanah Settle’s “Ibrahim the Illustrious Bassa” (1677). He is known as the Westerner born a Christian, and the favourite to Sultan Soliman the Magnificent (1494–1566) who viciously executed him. But in Settle, the conspiracy to slay Ibrahim failed. The Turkish grand vizier Ibrahim is symbolic in Restoration Age for the terrific abuse of friendship by the Ottoman Sultan. Settle envisages Ibrahim Pasha with admiration for his success as well as his dramatic fate to encounter the Turkish tyranny. The author meticulously portrays the Christian born Ibrahim’s fidelity against the Turkish Soliman’s infidelity. However, Settle articulates his allure in the confrontation between Europe and Turkey in the Ottoman palace of Constantinople to amuse the English audience.

По стъпките на паметта от XIV до XVI век: Никополският владетел“ Шишман в османската история на Кемалпашазаде

Author(s): Delyan Rusev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2023

This paper offers a reproduction, Bulgarian translation, and analysis of a previously unexplored account in the “Annals of the Ottoman Dynasty” by the Ottoman scholar Kemalpashazade (ca. 1468–1534). The text of the source concerns the relations between the anonymous Byzantine lord of the town of Bolayır on the Gallipoli Peninsula and the Bulgarian ruler of Nikopol called Shishman in the context of the early Ottoman conquest of the Balkans. The purpose of the research is to reveal the historical figures and events included in the account as well as the possible paths by which the memory of them reached Kemalpashazade. The juxtaposition of Kemalpashazade’s text with a number of historical sources from the 14th through 18th century has allowed for two major conclusions. Firstly, the lord of Bolayır is probably identical with the Byzantine governor of Gallipoli who appears with the name of Asen tekfur in Enveri’s Dusturname and can be identified with either Manuel Asen or John Asen, the sons of the Byzantine aristocrat of Bulgarian origin Andronikos Asen. Secondly, the image of Shishman in the “Annals” has likely resulted from a contamination of the memory of several representatives of the Shishmanid dynasty such as the Bulgarian tsars Mihail III Shishman, Ivan Alexander, and Ivan Shishman as well as, possibly, the latter’s namesake uncle. Particular attention is paid to some parallels with the information about Bulgarian-Byzantine relations at the time of Tsar Michael III Shishman as described in the fifteenth-century History of Laonikos Chalkokondyles, whose possible reception among Ottoman literati including Kemalpashazade is also discussed in the paper.
