Summary/Abstract: This paper aims at presenting the social and legal practices established in England during the Middle Ages, which guaranteed the elderly in need among the urban population that they would spend their old age in peace and relative ease. The research is based on data from bylaws of guilds and religious fraternities, monastery cartularies, town and court registers.
