Author(s): Ivan Božilov / Language(s): Bulgarian Publication Year: 0

In Bulgaria, Bogomils emerged at the beginning of the 10th centry under the influence of dualistic Massalian and Paulician movements. Its doctrine, cosmogony and eschatology, its attitude toward the Holy Scripture, Church and its secrets and ceremonies, but in the same way, its social and moral ideas are all well-known through a Bulgarian writer Presbyter Kozma (second half of the 10th century), Patriarch Theophilact from Constantinople (933-956), Byzantine writers Euthymios Zigabenos and Euthymios of Peribleptos, and a document known under the Latin name “Interrogatio Johannis”. In medieval Bulgaria, Bogomils gained great importance during the reign of tzar Peter (927-969) and tzar Boril (1207-1218), and they were last mentioned in the mid-14th century. After 1018, Bogomils spread out over Byzantine region (both in the Balkans and Asia Minor) and in 1344 reached the orthodox core – Mount Athos. The Bogumils also spread out to Russia, Wallachia and Moldova, Transilvania and Bosnia. They made their way into northern Italy and southern France (hence the names Bulgari, Boulgares, Bugri, Bougres as synonyms for Catharite and Albigensian heretics in those regions). Works by Rainier Sacconi, Nicola Viguier and “Interrogatio Johannis” also serve as testimonies.

Bilino Polje primjer jedne historiografske kontroverze

Author(s): Ante Škegro / Language(s): Croatian Publication Year: 0

Author(s): Nevena Gramatikova / Language(s): English,Bulgarian

This book is among the few deep analysis on Islam in the Bulgarian lands, written by a Bulgarian author. The analysis covers the origin of Islam in the Bulgarian lands, it's spreading there and its relation to cult objects according to the Life of Demir Baba and Otman Baba. Studies, like this one, are very important for the polemic and uncertain times we live in, because they can help us understand better the culture of part of the population of our countries. We are witnessing conflicts on ethnic basis, caused by misunderstanding or disinformation on processes that were being formed for centuries. Understanding this culture is important not only to ourselves but to the person standing next to us, for respecting each other, despite of the religious differences. In this book the author made serious attempt to give an answer to a polemic academic topics related to the Alevi(Alevism), like their origin, their destiny and the parallels of their historical and cultural memory in the present.

K zájmu Přemysla Otakara II. o města

Author(s): Josef Žemlička / Language(s): Slovak Publication Year: 0

My niewidzialni. Historia Polaków w Niemczech

Author(s): Peter Oliver Loew / Language(s): Polish

The author presents the history of Poles in Germany: it deals with the history of Polish immigration, as well as the historical Polish minorities in Germany, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Poles have been a part of German society for centuries, but only after the partitions did they become a large minority in the Kingdom of Prussia. Soon, socio-economic changes triggered migration processes, as a result of which, between the beginning of the 19th century and sometimes today, eight million Poles moved to areas where the majority of the German-speaking population was. Today, Poles - the second largest minority group in Germany - form a very diverse community. Among them there are displaced persons and late displaced persons who do not admit to their Polish identity, and yet speak Polish at home - often in Silesian dialect. There are also displaced persons who want to integrate with German society as quickly as possible and those who try to remain Poles. There are people who emigrated for economic or political reasons - some of them have Polish citizenship, and some German. Hundreds of thousands of Polish seasonal workers come to Germany every year. At the same time, there are descendants of people who were thrown to Germany by the Second World War, as well as economic migrants from the pre-war period. Peter Oliver Loew attempted to sketch the overall picture, despite the obvious methodological problems related both to the ambiguity of the terms Germans and Poles, and to the concept of minorities.

Srbi u Cetinskoj krajini

Author(s): Božidar Simić,Filip Škiljan / Language(s): Croatian

Područje Cetinske krajine obuhvaća područje nekadašnje općine Sinj i tri sela u nekadašnjoj općini Knin (Civljane, Kijevo i Cetina). Okosnicu regije čini rijeka Cetina koja objedinjava niz manjih kraških polja (Cetinsko i Paško polje, Vrličko polje, Hrvatačko polje i Sinjsko polje).

Trabzon Rum Devleti (1204-1263)

Trabzon Rum Devleti (1204-1263)

Author(s): Fatma İnce Sancaklı / Language(s): Turkish Publication Year: 0

The reason for the start of the crusades carried out between 1095-1291 is the help of the Byzantine State from the west. In this period, the Byzantine State, which was in a difficult situation in the face of the Seljuks on the one hand, the danger of Çaka Bey on the one hand, and the confusion created by the Pechenegs on the other, sought help from the west. Upon this call, the Westerners organized these expeditions in order to help their so-called co-religionists in the east. However, the real intention of the west is not to save its coreligionists in the east, but to seize the riches of the east. Realizing this intention of the crusaders, the Byzantine State also took some precautions against the crusaders from the first time. They caused difficulties in subsistence, they sent them to Anatolia by steep roads thanks to the guides they gave, and they threw them in front of the Turks and did not help them in many matters. All these events led to the formation of prejudice and hatred among the crusaders against the Byzantine State. Here are all these problems between the two sides, IV. It caused the direction of the Crusade to be turned towards the Byzantine State. IV. Before the Crusade started, an agreement was made between the crusaders and the Venetian State. According to this agreement, Venice would prepare a fleet for the crusaders to organize the expedition, and the crusaders would pay 85,000 marks to Venice for this fleet. However, the Venetians could not pay a large part of this money. The problems experienced in the Byzantine throne at this time became a great opportunity to pay the money that the crusaders promised to give to the Venetians, and therefore, deviating from their main goal, they turned towards the Byzantine State. IV. After the Crusade, Istanbul was plundered by the crusaders, the Latin state was established in Istanbul, and states were established in Trabzon, Iznik and the Balkans by the heirs of the Byzantine State. The Greek State of Trabzon, founded by the heirs of the Byzantine throne, Alexios and David, who fled to Trabzon after the occupation of Istanbul by the Latins, is important in this sense. In this paper, the period of the Trabzon Greek State between the years 1204-1263 will be explained.

Space and Property in Medieval Towns in the Venetian Part of Istria: The Case of Piran

Author(s): Darja Mihelič / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

Late antique and early medieval Istrian towns lived in a symbiosis with their agricultural hinterland, using it for economy purposes. As a result of the Frankish conquest and Byzantine loss of Istria in the second half of the 8th century, this region adopted the Frankish system of rural estates. Its foundation was the Frankish principle that all land with no owner and land conquered in military campaigns be-longed to the ruler, who could dispose with it at his will. The rulers granted estates with their privileges (and people) to their army commanders, who colonized there, partly or in full, their own vassals, who again granted the land to their subjects. Charlemagne assigned Istria to Duke John. But despite the new regime, the towns of Istria preserved their traditional influence over a wider area outside their urban setting, even during the process of evolving into autonomous medieval city-states.

Privately Owned Towers in Dalmatian Towns during the High and Central Middle Ages

Author(s): Zrinka Nikolić Jakus / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

During the high and central Middle Ages, in most although not all Mediterranean towns one of the most prominent expressions of power for urban nobility was to own a fortified residence or refuge where their families could find shelter in times of danger. Mighty private towers, which dominated the townscapes of northern and central Italy and, as it seems, also of southern France and central/southern Germany, were the visual means of self-assertion for the prominent families within their urban societies and spaces, while in historical studies their role has been particularly popularized by the work of Jacques Heers on urban noble family kindreds. These private towers often protected large building complexes that belonged to individual noble kindreds, which also gave them their names (e.g. the still extant Torri dei Salvucci in San Gimignano, a small Tuscan town particularly famous for its tall private towers).

The Foreigner and Ownership Rights in Eastern Adriatic Medieval Communes

Author(s): Ante Birin / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

The legal position of foreigners in Eastern Adriatic medieval cities, which in the period from the 12th to 14th centuries organized themselves as communal societies, is a subject that surpasses the existing juridical sources, same as in the case of Italian cities. Limited almost exclusively to the city statutes, i.e. codices of urban law, these sources – chronologically determined by their time of composition and conceptually insufficient concerning the fact that they were more or less regulating only some questions regarding the foreigners – reveal only the tip of an iceberg in terms of their legal status. The lack of juridical sources from the pre-statutory period, on the one hand, leaves open the question how the legal position of foreigners was regulated at the time and how it gradually evolved. Partnership and commercial contracts with which the Eastern Adriatic communes sought to regulate, bilaterally, their relations to each other, as well as towards the Western Adriatic communes during the 12th and 13th centuries, reveal that the two fundamental principles on which they were based - the principle of reciprocity and the principle of protecting the property and person of foreigners (merchants) – became and remained the basis of their legal status when codifying urban law.

Mechanisms of Immovable Property Transfer in a Medieval Town: The Case of Zadar

Author(s): Tomislav Popić / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

The aim of this article is to analyse several mechanisms that served as a basis of immovable property transfer between people of medieval Dalmatian towns. Medieval Zadar has been selected for the case study because the surviving records allow us not only to outline these mechanisms, but also to track the ways in which property transfer was carried out in everyday practice. The main source used is the archival fond of Zadar’s High Court for Civil Disputes, Curia maior civilium (hereafter: CMC), a collection of documents mostly dated to the second half of the 14th century. A careful study of these records offers an insight from a new angle into the everyday practice of immovable property transfer and allows for comparing it with the norms set down in the Statute of Zadar.

Podjela kastruma i vlastelinstva Greben krajem 14. stoljeća: neki aspekti unutarnjega razvoja svjetovnoga vlastelinstva

Author(s): Ana Novak,Mario Kevo / Language(s): Croatian Publication Year: 0

Based on the written documents as well as on the reconnaissance of the terrain the authors reconstruct one part of the history of the castle of Greben as the administrative center of the Greben estate and the center of the Greben family. The origin of the formation of the Greben estate are in the middle of the 13th century, but during the 14th century this estate was organized and finally divided due to the great number of members of two main lineages of the Greben family. Inner division of the estate was limited by the importance and status of the individual members of the family, therefore the authors had presented the family genealogy as well. Even more, the political and social role of the individual members of the Greben family in the medieval Kingdom of Hungary-Croatia is depicted. For description of the physical division of the castrum Greben the most important is a charter issued in 1399, so the authors argue that historical importance of this document is unquestionable. Even more, the authors argue that this document is also important for understanding of highly complex phases of the construction of the castle – castrum Greben.

Srednjovjekovni pečat grada Skradina

Author(s): Ante Birin / Language(s): Croatian Publication Year: 0

Use of the seals, which in the Middle Ages (as the prerogative of the sovereign power) was almost exclusively associated with the person of ruler, will experience in the West a general use, due to the weakening of the central government in favor of local ones. It will diffuse and spread among other social classes (middling and lower nobility and bourgeoisie) as well as various religious and secular institutions (such as chapters, monasteries, cities, universities and guilds). When it comes to medieval cities, use of seals have spread most intensively in Italian cities from the area of northern and central part of the Apennine peninsula, which managed, during the 12th century, to emancipate from the imperial government and to form themselves as an autonomous city municipalities entering so in the sphere of public law. In the area of Croatian lands, the town seals, not incidentally, appear in the towns on the east coast of Adriatic, which in the period from the 12th to the 14th century organized themselves as communal societies. One of the known communal seals is that of Skradin, whose description is preserved in a transcript of a document dated April 9th, 1294. There is also an extant fragment of the seal on the document from 1303. Although these data was not unknown to the scholarly public, the seal of Skradin, with which this article deals, has not been the subject of interest of Croatian historiography or sphragistics.

Iako je monumentalno djelo Zefa Mirdite Vlasi u historiografiji velikim dijelom obuhvatilo gotovo sva postojeća historiografska (ali i politička) shvaćanja ovog kompleksnog pitanja, prostora za nove interpretacije tog “nestalog” balkanskog fenomena (naroda) ima i previše te je i sam profesor Mirdita nekoliko godina poslije historiografskoj javnosti darovao još jednu monografiju:Vlasi – starobalkanski narod.

The Tools of War in the Cancellieri Vendetta

The Tools of War in the Cancellieri Vendetta

Author(s): Zoltán Szolnoki / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

The Cancellieri vendetta, a conflict between members of the Cancellieri clan, took place in the 13th century, perhaps in the year 1300. In terms of narrative sources, we can identify two distinct groups of records: the Florentine tradition and the Pistoia chronicle. The vendetta determined the history of both Pistoia and the Tuscan region, as the antagonisms among the Pistoiain elite caused similar factional strife in Florence as well when the leaders of the two Cancellieri factions moved to the nearby city. The so-called ‘White’ Cancellieri were linked with the Florentine White Guelphs; the other party were linked with the Florentine Black Guelphs. The leaders of the Florentine factions – the Donati (Blacks) and the Cerchi (Whites) – were opponents in everyday politics. The impulse of the Cancellieri clan members had a huge effect on the situation leading to violent factional wars in Florence that ended in 1308. In my study, I analyse the narrative sources of this period, both from Pistoia and from Florence, and examine the tools used in the fights: the ‘tangible’ weapons that were mentioned by the anonymous writer from Pistoia and the ‘narrative’ tools of the Florentine tradition.
