PARALLEL WORLDS IN THE SOUTH ALBANIAN BALLADS OF NIZAMS

PARALLEL WORLDS IN THE SOUTH ALBANIAN BALLADS OF NIZAMS

Author(s): Lumnije Kadriu / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

Nizams were ordinary soldiers in the regular army of the Ottoman Empire who were taken from all places under its rule for mandatory service in distant countries, such as Yemen and Arabistan. As a result, a ballad subgenre was created: Ballads of Nizams. Since the Middle Ages, the Ottoman Empire conducted periodic battles with Yemen and so ballads were produced over a long time span. Because of the nature of their absence and the long distances involved, as well as difficult environmental conditions where they were sent, men often had little chance of returning alive. Thus, in these songs, mostly in the oldest versions, we find communication between Nizams and their loved ones realized metaphorically and supernaturally. Communication was not only between people in distant countries but also between different worlds, of the dead and the living. In this article, in addition to analysis of two quite popular Ballads of Nizams sung in polyphony, which is a characteristic of singing in south Albania, their re-creation and re-contextualization over time and space will also be analysed. Moreover, the analysis will include the reuse of one of the ballads by the prominent writer Ismail Kadare to interpret a painful contemporary phenomenon, that of women who in time of crisis in Albania were forced to leave the country and ended up as prostitutes abroad. Their “world” became very distant and difficult, and return was most probably impossible, both because of the social stigma and because they were considered to inhabit an “underworld”.

IMAGINATIVE CONTEMPLATION IN THE 14TH CENTURY ENGLISH MYSTICISM

IMAGINATIVE CONTEMPLATION IN THE 14TH CENTURY ENGLISH MYSTICISM

Author(s): Lucie Rathouzská / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

In this paper, I focus on imagination in 14th century English mysticism and modern approaches of Richard Rolle’s, Walter Hilton’s, and the unknown author of the Cloud of Unknowing’s concept of imagination. There are several inconsistencies within contemporary approaches to the imagination, affectivity, and bodily metaphors, implying a contradictory appreciation of the three English authors. In this paper, I will discuss criticism of imagination in the mysticism of these three English authors. Moreover, some possible responses will be highlighted.

The paper presents some aspects of the Byzantine policy in the Mediterranean during the second half of the 13th Century. Emperor Michael VIII Palaeologus (1259–1282) wants to restore the Byzantine fleet and for this purpose invested a lot of money. This fleet should become a rival of Venice and Genoa. The efforts of the emperor realized partially. Оnly part of the Greek Islands are exempt from Latin rule. But Byzantine diplomacy managed to restore its influence in Western Mediterranean. Войните и въоръжението в миниатюри от Лондонското четвероевангелие (BL ADD MS 39627)

Author(s): Ivelin A. Ivanov / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Publication Year: 0

The article is aimed at a problem that has not yet been investigated by analysing the images of wars and armament in the miniatures of the Gospels of Tsar Ivan Alexander, dating back to 1355, and currently stored in the British Library (Add MS 39627). The manuscript, which is preserved in a near-perfect condition, is illustrated with 367 fine illuminated images, including those of medieval weapons and armament. The author focuses his analysis on three main issues: – images of offensive weaponry; – images of armour; – the presentation of clothing and military banners in the miniatures which represent warriors and armed men. The approach of the analysis is definitely critical, and the author emphasizes on the presence of two groups – relatively credible, and unreliable images of armaments and armour. In conclusion, the author highlights the potential usefulness of the analysed visual information for the study of the Bulgarian Late Middle Ages.
