In this article the authors deal with the changes in the ethnic structure of Karlovac and Lika-Senj counties in the period from 1991 to 2011 and analyse the factors influencing these changes. Special attention is given to the two most represented ethnic groups in Croatia – the Croats and the Serbs. Analysing the census data the authors emphasize that the most significant changes have been registered in the first analysed inter-census period from 1991 to 2001 what is ascribed to emigration, the Croatian War of Independence, population ageing and changes in the population census methodology. According to the population census from 1991 both counties recorded the majority of residents of Croatian ethnicity, while the population of Serbian ethnic group represented the most numerous national minority counting significant proportion of 25.4% in Karlovac and 36.4% in Lika-Senj County. The 2001 population census recorded national homogenization in the ethnic structure of both counties determined by the domination of Croats (counting around 85% in both counties). The data gathered by the most recent 2011 population census have not brought any significant changes in relation to the previous ones in Karlovac County, while in some parts of Lika-Senj County they registered a significant change associated with the return of the Croatian citizens of Serbian ethnicity. The studied issue was considered in the context of highly unfavourable general demographic situation characterised by significantly pronounced processes of population ageing and depopulation as well as by adverse economic conditions in the two analysed counties.

Prezentacje: Edward Pasewicz: Sonata na cytozynę i trzy fałszywe białka. O mitobiologicznych szyfrach Edwarda Pasewicza

Prezentacje: Edward Pasewicz: Sonata na cytozynę i trzy fałszywe białka. O mitobiologicznych szyfrach Edwarda Pasewicza

Author(s): Jakub Skurtys / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2 (7)/2015

The article discusses Edward Pasewicz’s poetry from the perspective of an organic metaphor, developed by the poet in his latest volumes (“Pałacyk Bertolta Brechta” [“Bertolt Brecht’s Palace”] and “Och, Mitochondria”. The author considers whether Pasewicz’s interest in the reflection on tissues, cells and DNA strands, and the idea of combining them with the issue of poetic coding, may be seen as an attempt at resolving the impasse between mythical and realistic forces of this work, or whether it merely constitutes a supplementation to the earlier proposed strategies of translating life into reality. Juxtaposing Pasewicz’s experiments with biopoetry and seeking in them a chance to transcend the poetics of the author of “Dolna Wilda” [“The Lower Wilda”], I come to the conclusion that in this case the organic metaphor serves further exploration of a private mythology; but it turns out to be not very productive for the rethinking of the concept of life and community.

Prezentacje: Edward Pasewicz: Słuchanie jako doświadczenie somatyczne. O wierszach Edwarda Pasewicza

Author(s): Adam Dziadek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2 (7)/2015

The text is a synthetic description of Edward Pasewicz’s poetic work, which is included within the “plan for a somatic criticism.” The key operational concept used to describe this poetry is rhythm, which spreads out on all the levels of expression like a theme in a story and makes the texts of every poet unique and original. The rhythm is closely linked with the process of listening and with the body itself, which generates it. Following Charlers Berstein, the author performs an act of Close Listening, attempting to point out the relations between rhythm, the sphere of sound in Pasewicz’s poetic texts, and a speaking subject.

Demografski resursi kao indikator i čimbenik dispariteta u regionalnom razvoju Hrvatske

Demografski resursi kao indikator i čimbenik dispariteta u regionalnom razvoju Hrvatske

Author(s): Dane Pejnović,Željka Kordej de Villa / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 3/2015

According to recent research, modern development in Croatia is burdened by distinct regional disparities. As differences in socioeconomic development are the key generator of spatial mobility of the population, this is reflected in the atrophy of demographic resources of less developed areas, and consequently in the destabilization of their population. Due to the connections between economic and demographic development, the paper examines demographic resources as an indicator and factor in the disparities occurring in the regional development of the country. Demographic resources in 2001 and 2011 on three hierarchical levels of regional development and four spatial categories are explored, as well as the composite index of development of counties in 2013. The research process includes the calculation of synthetic indicators of demographic potential – the index of demographic resources (ider) and its evaluation within the typological scale of six threshold values. The research results show that: first, Croatia has a highly uneven spatial distribution of demographic resources; second, more than half the number of the counties belong to the first development category, and only three counties to the fourth development category; third, regions in the fourth development category are characterized by favorable demographic resources, while areas in the first category are characterized by weak demographic resources; and fourth, structural and dynamic characteristics of the index of demographic resources clearly indicate specific development problems in certain parts of the country.

It was written most likely in the late 1947 or early 1948 and includes persons/ families from the People’s Committee City of Varaždin who received state compensation for dead/ deceased members of their households as victims of the First World War. The largest numbers of users of a state disability were women - 95 percent, while men accounted for five percent. Persons receiving disability benefits for families originated from more than 150 sites in the area of today’s Varaždin county, and most of them were from Varaždin, Tužno, Varaždinbreg, Greda, Kelemen, Petrijanec and Ladanje Donje. The oldest person receiving disability benefits was Jaga Tomašković from Jalkovec, born in 1857, and Jakob Novak from Jakopovec, born in 1858. Also, 85 percent of recipients of disability benefits were Croatian, one was Slovenian, while for 15 percent nationality was not stated. In almost all cases women were widows, while Eva Osterman from Kapelica and blind Jelica Zrinjski from Ključ were unmarried. >From total number of beneficiaries 49 percent had children. Individually, most children had Stjepan Bregović from Pešćenica (he had 9 children). Most women who received beneficiary disability were housewives - 79 percent, while five percent were peaseants. However, there were a few exceptions such as postal clerk Štefanija Bakliža from Varaždin and landlady Regina Hrassberger from Sveti Martin. Still, for 60 percent it was not declared where they work, while 38 percent were employed at home, respectively they worked at their own farm. Persons who received disability benefits were in 83 percent wives, seven percent were mothers, four percent fathers, two percent parents, one percent child or children, while three percent was not specified. Regarding their education, 37 percent had completed a few years of primary school, while 33 percent were illiterate. Funerary marking, expression of the religious and social dogmas

Funerary marking, expression of the religious and social dogmas

Author(s): Oana-Diana-Eliana Popescu-Coliban / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2016

Religion and society are landmarks for the human existence, the culture from an anthropological perspective and the history as we know it. With its monuments, the funerary space plays the role of reflecting the identity of the interred people, an identity that cannot deny a certain type of relation with religion and society. From the state of belonging to repudiation or to reinterpretations and laicization, the cemetery is a witness of our existence. The cemetery is an architectural space that is born and never dies, a timeless space, a space of the overlays and memory.

ДИНАМИКА ДЕМОГРАФИЧЕСКИХ ПРОЦЕССОВ В РЕСПУБЛИКЕ ТАТАРСТАН: СДЕРЖАННЫЙ ОПТИМИЗМ

Author(s): Riyaz Gataullovich Minzaripov,Farida Falesovna Ishkineeva,Simbul Abdullovna Akhmetova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 6/2013

Population processes in the Republic of Tatarstan are analyzed in the article on the basis of statistical data for the period from the beginning of the 21th century till present. The nature of the changes in the demographic behavior of the Republic’s population is determined. The conclusion is made that the overall picture of the demographic processes cannot be uniquely defined due to the presence of differently directed trends. Despite the maintenance of crisis phenomena, the reasons for restrained optimism have appeared. There is a fundamental change in the reproduction processes, which consists in the fact that since 2011 the Republic’s population has grown due to natural causes, and the urban population (predominantly the citizens of the capital) has played the key role in this process.

ETNODEMOGRAFSKE ODREDNICE IDENTITETA VUKOVARA U 20. STOLJEĆU: KOMPARATIVNA ANALIZA REZULTATA POPISA (1900. – 2011.)

Author(s): Dražen Živić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 2/2019

Vukovar in the 20th century had quite a dynamic and specific demographic and ethnodemographic development determined by wider historical, social, geopolitical, cultural and economic forces. Voluntary and forced migrations were a dominant factor of changes in the migration and structure of the inhabitants. The paper, on the basis of primary sources (published results of the censuses), in four different, but highly relevant periods (1900 – 1910, 1910 – 1948, 1948 – 1991, 1991 – 2011) analyzes, shows and interprets the most important changes in the structure oft he inhabitants according to the ethnic group. The paper also shows the reached level of homogeneity / heterogeneity / bimodality of the ethnodemographic picture of the city as an important force in shaping its cultural, ethnic / national and geographic / spatial / urban identity in the analyzed period (1900 – 2011). In spite of the very complex ethnic composition of the inhabitants, during the 20th century Vukovar was inhabited by Croatian ethnic majority, ranging from 38,7% (in 1900) to 57,1% (in 2011). This has significantly influenced dominant features of the city identity in the past hundred and more years.

RAZVOJ POMOĆNE METODE PROCJENE BROJA STANOVNIKA: POTROŠNJA VODE KAO INDIKATOR DEPOPULACIJE

Author(s): Tado Jurić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 1-2/2021

A special problem in Croatian demographic research is the methodological inconsistency and questionability of official data at several levels. This problem is not only a mere administrative issue. I this paper we develop a new method for determining the actual population, which we tested in Eastern Croatia. The method involves monitoring water consumption in households in wider areas as an indicator of population decline. We believe that the method could be particularly useful as a predictive indicator. Results: All Slavonian counties have a decline of 7.37 to 8.37% of the population from 2011 to 2019, and the trend is particularly strong after Croatia’s accession to the EU. Since Croatia’s accession to the EU, the population of Eastern Croatia has decreased by 105,698 citizens through natural movement and emigration, which is 8.7% of the total population of Slavonia compared to the last census from 2011.

Динамика благосостояния в СССР и других социалистических странах в свете антропометрических данных: обзор исследований

Динамика благосостояния в СССР и других социалистических странах в свете антропометрических данных: обзор исследований

Author(s): I. I. Verniaev / Language(s): Russian Issue: 48/2024

This article provides an analytical overview of contemporary studies on the anthropometric history concerning the well-being dynamics of the Soviet Union and other socialist countries (Poland, Czechoslovakia, East Germany etc.). In recent decades, the concept of the “biological standard of living” has emerged, focusing on the fundamental, “human” dimension of a broader understanding of well-being. Within this framework, fundamental aspects of the existence of individuals, entire populations, and nations are examined, including the quantity and quality of nutrition, morbidity, material and psycho-emotional conditions, and the state of the environment. Indicators of the dynamics of the biological standard of living utilized in this study are not monetary (GDP per capita, real incomes etc.) but anthropometric (average height, weight etc.) and demographic (mortality, life expectancy, etc.) characteristics. Anthropometric studies of socialist countries allow overcoming limitations of official sources on well-being, assessing the contribution of state medical infrastructure and social support to the biological well-being of individuals, as well as informal self-sustaining practices. They also enable a comparison of their standard of living with countries of different socio-economic and political structures, detailing the impact on well-being of both long-term developmental factors and short-term fluctuations and crises. Furthermore, the article objectively evaluates achievements in overcoming class, professional, regional, ethnic, and gender inequalities. While the results of anthropometric history studies on the population of the USSR and other socialist countries are significant, there remain unresolved, debatable questions, which are elaborated in detail in this comprehensive review article.

Проблемы правового регулирования отношений в сфере медицинских тканевых технологий в Российской Федерации

Author(s): L. T. Volova,N. A. Maksimenko,M. V. Levina / Language(s): Russian Issue: 3/2024

This article substantiates the need for shaping a separate legal system to regulate the relations in tissue banking, as well as biomedical tissue and hybrid technologies. The key problems that have been faced by biomedical and cellular tissue technologies in Russia were analyzed. The major deficiencies and contradictions regarding organ and tissue transplantation in the current Russian legal system were pointed out. First, there have been no federal laws governing the activities of tissue banks. Second, the procedures of human biomaterial donation for medical use remain uncontrolled. Third, there has been no consistency in the retrieval, storage, and transportation of human biomaterials. Finally, the list and legal status of organizations engaged in relevant activities and the legal regime of biological material used for these purposes have not been defined. The study focuses on the practical problems of tissue banks and innovative biomedical technologies that require a legislative initiative. Possible ways to overcome the identified contradictions and problems were discussed.

РЕПУБЛИКА СРПСКА - ДЕМОГРАФСКА ОДРЖИВОСТ ИЗМЕЂУ ДЕПОПУЛАЦИЈЕ И РАСТА ЉУДСКОГ КАПИТАЛА

Author(s): Stevo Pašalić,Darko Pašalić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 22/2021

Demographic recession in itself hides a great threat for sustainable development in the Republic of Srpska and BiH, which threatens to collapse the economic and related to it, both the health and pension systems. This especially implies aging population, and mutually unchanged mortality and birth rates. This reduces workingage population, which together threatens the foundations on which sustainability and the overall socioeconomic system rest. The goal and research methods according to the “sustaindemo” model were applied in the area of the Republic of Srpska, with the intention to determine the typology of municipalities and cities according to demographic sustainability, which can help creating policies of sustainable spatial development of municipalities and cities, based on the use of “endogenous” (internal) human resources. The methodology is based on the application of multicriteria GIS analysis, in deriving demographic indicators and indexes. The results of the research confirm hypotheses about the interaction of demographic and economic development, more precisely about demographic resources as indicators and factors of economic development of BiH and the Republic of Srpska. Finally, it has been confirmed that changes in demographic resources are indirect, but a very reliable indicator of economic and overall development, where especially demographic index and education index, as the two basic components of the demographic index resources, more closely show specific developmental problems in individual spatial parts of the country.

INTEREST IN STEM AND ITS RELATIONS TO THE EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AND SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF GRAMMAR SCHOOL STUDENTS IN SERBIA

Author(s): Filip Stašević,Aleksandar Milenković,Aleksandra Maksimović,Marina Svičević,Lazar Krstić / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2025

Despite the growing prominence of STEM disciplines in contemporary society, relevant studies indicate a concerning trend: a decline in students' interest and engagement in these fields. This research included 1,045 students from four grammar schools in Serbia. The study utilizes a quantitative research design: data were collected through an online questionnaire. Key variables: end-of-term marks in STEM subjects, gender, parental education, family size, and place of residence were analyzed following the answers of respondents. Students were divided into two groups, STEM (435) and Non-STEM (610). The results indicated that the students enrolled in STEM-focused programs demonstrated significantly higher academic performance in STEM subjects during primary education compared to their peers in Non-STEM tracks. Additionally, the study identifies potential relations between students’ interest in STEM and factors such as gender, parental education, and place of residence, with no significant effect found for the number of siblings. Specific sample and custom-designed questionnaire, highlight the need for future research with a broader and more diverse sample, incorporating additional socio-demographic factors and qualitative methods for a deeper understanding of students' engagement with STEM fields.

ОДРЕЂЕЊЕ ПОЈМА ПОПУЛАЦИОНЕ ПОЛИТИКЕ, ЊЕНЕ ДИМЕНЗИЈЕ И КЛАСИФИКАЦИЈА

Author(s): Aleksandar Čavić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 21/2020

Population policy is most often understood as a system of measures and actions that act on demographic processes, especially natural and spatial movement, in order to achieve a certain (by direction, intensity and structure) specific population movement, harmonized with existing economic, social, political and other goals. However, as knowledge in the subject area grows, the notion of population policy does not stagnate. Although there are nuanced theoretical interpretations of the concept of population policy, its definition is most often related to its practical dimension. As the concept of population policy has several dimensions, we can define it by the formulation that it is a set of measures and actions aimed at shaping demographic development, and a scientific discipline, or branch of demography that studies the legality of action to shape demographic development, and comparative analyzes of its applications, and formally determined social action, is action of a certain public-legal entity. We can consider population policy through its dimensions. From the different definitions of the concept of population policy to conclude that the concept of population policy must be understood multidimensionally. In that sense, population policy as a kind of category can be viewed from three aspects. The first aspect denotes population policy as a practice, the second aspect views population policy as a branch of demography, ie a scientific discipline, while the third aspect treats population policy as a document. Population policy can be classified in different ways: from the point of view of its scope and reach, from the aspect of function and object according to which it primarily acts, from the aspect of grouping countries according to the achieved degree of demographic changes, according to the territorial level, as well as in other ways.
