MEDICINE AND LITERARY ROMANTICISM

MEDICINE AND LITERARY ROMANTICISM

Author(s): Mirela Radu / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2021

The present article is aimed at drawing a parallel between two seemingly separate fields: medicine and literature. The two do not exclude each other, on the contrary, they complement happily. The representatives of medicine, with obvious erudition, have been, throughout the history of humanity, some of the important initiators of the understanding of life in its various forms: scientific, artistic, aesthetic, etc. The human being, examined both physically and spiritually, needs a broad approach that combines several sciences. It is the art of healing that has, since ancient times, succeeded in leading to a deeper perception of man. The present study is an interdisciplinary attempt to connect the study of literature with medicine. In this paper we aim to analyze personalities of the medical world who, loving aesthetic values, have left the narrow world of science, managing to become creators of works of art and literature with a strong impact on culture. The present study is an interdisciplinary approach which connects the study of literature with the one of medicine.

PRESENT AND FUTURE EFFECTS OF CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC ON HIGHER EDUCATION

PRESENT AND FUTURE EFFECTS OF CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC ON HIGHER EDUCATION

Author(s): Cristina Mirela Nicolaescu / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

The COVID-19 has left us with a disrupted education system that needs. This pandemic caused an unprecedented situation, and one of the most affected areas was education and training, when educational institutions have had to close their doors, exams have been cancelled, and millions of students have been forced to go through online or distance learning. The measures on long term for the recovery of the learning process when returning to normality envisage a system of operation for the improvement of policies in this area, with their immediate and effective implementation in order to create a resilient education system at the national and international level. This paper investigates the present and future effects of Coronavirus pandemic on higher education by analysing the current situation after closing a difficult time of distant, online and hybrid teaching as well as the prospects of the learning system reconstruction and development in the future. Even though the short, medium and long term objectives of such process may differ from country to country, the principles of planning and organizing it are presumed to be general and feasible for all universities. Although crisis situations are hard to predict, a general prevention plan and more flexible study programs are envisaged for a faster and better adjustment to unexpected events in all aspects of life. Resilience in the education system not only will mitigate the adverse effects of pandemic like hinders in institutional instruction, but will ensure a renewal of the old ways and out-dated methodologies towards digital technology, psychological comfort, social change and welfare.

Autonomy, Interdependence of Care Argument and the Moral Justification of Human Genome Editing (HGE)

Author(s): Ndukaku Okorie,Dapo Daniel Shaola / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2025

The debate about the ethics of human genome editing (HGE) is common among bioethicists, religious scholars, physicians inter alia. One of the major problems has been how to justify HGE by including considerations about human dignity. This is because HGE has the potential to reinforce and violate human dignity and equality. In this paper, we aim to argue that HGE can be morally justified without the violation of human dignity and equality. In doing this, the autonomy and interdependence of the care argument will be deployed to demonstrate the moral justification of HGE for therapeutic and non-therapeutic purposes. The paper will conclude that HGE can be successfully justified through autonomy and interdependence of care arguments without violating human dignity and equality.

HISTORY WILL SAY THEY WERE FRIENDS: REFLECTIONS ON aDNA AND GENDER IN ARCHAEOLOGICAL CONTEXTS

HISTORY WILL SAY THEY WERE FRIENDS: REFLECTIONS ON aDNA AND GENDER IN ARCHAEOLOGICAL CONTEXTS

Author(s): Kathleen Wilson / Language(s): English Issue: 49/2023

Gender is extremely complex. Expressions and understandings of gender change through both space and time. What is considered the norm in one culture might be unusual in another. Cultural anthropologists engage in participant observation of societies to explore their understanding of gender, as well as many other complex topics. As archaeologists our studied populations are no longer alive and can only be studied through archaeological remains and historical records. For these populations, how do we examine complex topics, such as gender? Typically, biological sex is determined through osteological techniques and compared to accompanying grave goods to ascertain gender. Osteological analysis can be inaccurate when sexing a skeleton due to either degradation of the remains or age of the individual at death, as well as osteological sexual dimorphism being a spectrum. Recently, ancient DNA (aDNA) analyses have assisted in confirming biological sex for remains that have been considered indeterminate in the past. aDNA has also revealed that there have been cases of individuals who have been mis-sexed through osteological analysis, thus allowing for a more in-depth study of sex and gender for those individuals. This article aims to discuss the possibilities and realities of using aDNA to assist in archaeological gender studies and to continue a dialogue concerning studying non-binary gender identities and non-heteronormative sexualities in past communities.

Role of Museums in Promoting Health and Well-Being of Seniors and Dementia Patients: Reminiscence Sessions

Role of Museums in Promoting Health and Well-Being of Seniors and Dementia Patients: Reminiscence Sessions

Author(s): Elza Ēķe / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Museums worldwide are increasingly announcing themselves as potential partners in promoting public health and well-being. Responding to the population ageing and its consequences, seniors, including persons diagnosed with dementia, become active target audiences in museums. Reminiscence sessions are one of the most frequently used approaches in museums working with seniors and dementia patientsin promoting their health and well-being. Considering the subject’s topicality, the article investigates tendencies and main challenges in implementing reminiscence sessions in museum environments. The author analyses previous researches, case studies, and public programs of museums and concludes that museums, with their specific resources, suitable environments, and wide geographical spread, have an underestimated potential to become essential institutions providing reminiscence sessions. Therefore, museums should strengthen cross-sectoral cooperation networks with the health and social care sectors and implement measurable reminiscence activities for further research. In such a manner, it would promote awareness among policymakers and broader society concerning museums as credible partners for enhancing health and well-being for seniors and patients with dementia.

Health Data Reporting and Recordkeeping in Early Modern Transylvania: The Medical Reports of Andrea Carol Grosse

Author(s): Sabine Jesner / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

This study explores the emergence of systematic health data reporting and recordkeeping in early modern Transylvania through an analysis of Andrea Carol Grosse’s medical report on the 1737–1738 plague outbreak. Against the backdrop of the Habsburg Monarchy’s increasing centralization and the concomitant recognition of population health as a cornerstone of military strength and economic prosperity, Grosse’s work illustrates the early integration of empirical observation with nascent statistical methods. His report, structured in three interrelated sections—descriptive analysis, detailed patient case studies, and a travel diary—demonstrates how paper-based administrative technologies facilitated the collection and organization of health data. Grosse’s systematic documentation of disease transmission, symptomatology, and outcomes not only reflects contemporary theories of contagion and miasma but also anticipates modern epidemiological approaches by linking individual patient histories to broader public health measures. By contextualizing Grosse’s observations within the broader shifts in statecraft, medical practice, and administrative technology, this paper contributes to our understanding of how early modern health data practices laid the groundwork for the development of medical statistics and evidence-based public health policy. The findings underscore the transformative role of health data in early modern governmental strategies and offer new insights into the interplay between medical knowledge production and state power.

Benefits of Psychosocial Services for Cancer Patients

Author(s): Rodica Gabriela Enache,Mariana Uță,Marinela Grigore / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

Contemporary society is aware that there are different types of diseases that people try to live with. Acceptance of the disease, managing emotions at the time of diagnosis, reducing worries are goals of psychotherapeutic program for cancer patients. The overall objective of this research is to identify and measure factors that contribute to activating resilience in cancer patients and their families and to evaluate the effectiveness of psycho-socio-medical services. The group of participants will consist of approximately 10 patients diagnosed with cancer, enrolled in social programs for the chronically ill, some of them being residents of Năvodari, Constanța, Romania. We will apply to these patients instruments to assess their emotional state, satisfaction and quality of life participating in socio-psycho-oncological support groups. The following questionnaires were applied in the three stages of the research: initial evaluation, evaluation after 6 months and evaluation after 12 months:Questionnaire on Distress in Cancer Patients-short form (QSC-R10); The Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale – 21 Items (DASS-21); The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II). The comparison of the results obtained by applying the assessment instruments during the first year of operation of the psycho-oncological support group reveals a significant difference between the scores obtained at the first assessment and the scores obtained at the end of the year, which validates our belief that the group meetings, the psycho-oncological intervention methods applied and the psycho-social and socio-medical information decreased the patients' distress, increased their ability to adapt to the new life context, and increased their quality of life. Integrated approach to the needs of the person, in relation to his/her socio-economic situation, health status, level of education and social living environment, through Social Services are proactive. Based on the needs of each person, social services can have a broad reach, including people diagnosed with cancer, their family members and people who have overcome the disease.

Epidemics as Political Emergencies in Democratic Contexts. Legitimacy and Political Responsibilities Concerning NPI Implementation

Epidemics as Political Emergencies in Democratic Contexts. Legitimacy and Political Responsibilities Concerning NPI Implementation

Author(s): Corrado Piroddi / Language(s): English Issue: 19/2024

This paper aims to discuss pandemics and epidemics as political emergencies and the political implications of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). It argues that a comprehensive justification for NPI implementation necessitates not only support from the scientific community, but also a deep understanding of their ethical sustainability and moral fairness. The successful implementation of NPIs is also underpinned by political legitimation and fair attribution of political responsibilities and accountability. The paper will explore how such legitimation is attainable during public health emergencies that involve temporary suspensions of standard rules and norms in liberal and democratic regimes. It argues that the legitimation of extraordinary health policies is rooted in the impartiality of the measures, non-discriminatory nature, the transparency of the emergency procedure that led to their implementation, and the close relationship between authorities and the citizens they serve.

Elderly People from Residential Centers. A Theoretical Approach on Ageing Implications and the Social need of Vulnerable Elderly

Author(s): Diana Narcisa Dănău / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

Aging is a natural phenomenon that occurs in everyone's life. It has different implications in people's lives, taking into account the way of whole life care. Through this article I want to highlight three primary problems in the lives of the elderly that require quality services from the authorities. These are loneliness, the need for socialization and poor health. The feeling of loneliness is experienced by both the young and the elderly, representing a phenomenon that affects the quality of a person's life. In old age, people are used to living in their own house with their partner, and when one of them disappears, the feeling of uselessness appears, and at the same time, emotionally, the feelings are felt more strongly, gradually becoming dependent on another person. Socialization is also an important element in people's lives, in old age it is the connection that allows the individual to remain connected when various changes occur, for example retirement. The state of health plays a very important role in the life of individuals reaching old age, as various medical conditions begin to appear that require the unconditional support of family members.

Feminizarea profesiei de asistent social în România. Studiu privind proporţia femeilor în funcţii de conducere

Author(s): Sergiu-Lucian Raiu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2024

The study is based on administrative data received from General Directorates of Social Work and Child Protection (DGASPCs) and Directorates of Social Work/ The Departments of Social and Medical Assistance and Public Social Work Services (DASs/ DASMs/ SPASs) in Romania in 2022. In none of the DGASPCs in the country does the number of male managers exceed the number of female managers. Half of the DGASPCs in the country have women in positions with management attributions of these institutions. The average number of staff in management positions in all 48 DGASPCs in the country is 37 women, the most in a DGASPC in Bucharest, the fewest in DGASPC Bistriţa-Năsăud. More than half of the DGASPCs in the country, 26 DGASPCs have a female director general at the head of the institution, compared to only 15 DGASPCs headed by men. And in the DASs of the county town halls, the majority of the managers are female. Of the total number of DASs in county capitals across the country, 78.23% have women in management positions in their own apparatus or in subordinate units and structures. So, whether we are talking about county or local social welfare institutions, the majority are headed by women. In order to interpret these data, in further studies it is worth conducting interviews to see why women assume leadership positions to a greater extent than men in the social work field, or is the trend due to the higher number of female persons working in the field compared to male persons.

Fertility Intentions of Millennials Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic

Fertility Intentions of Millennials Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic

Author(s): Vytenis Juozas Deimantas,Aušra Maslauskaitė / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2024

We aim at investigating the connection between the negative change in fertility intentions and change in socio-economic resources (financial, mental, physical, life satisfaction) caused by COVID-19 containment measures for millennials in Lithuania. We use data from the Families and Inequalities Survey carried out in Lithuania in 2021. It is a representative dataset covering the cohort born between 1985 and 1989 (n = 1000). Analytically, we employ the multinomial logistic regression with robust standard errors. We find a positive association between a likelihood of postponing fertility intentions and having a partner. Worsening life satisfaction is positively associated to downgrading fertility intentions.

Krystyna Szczesniak’s monograph entitled The World of Zamova as the World of Plants on the Border of Eastern and Western Slavic Lands (Gdańsk: Gdańsk University Press 2022, p. 884) is a deepening of the theme presented in 2008 in the study entitled The World of Plants as the World of People on the border of Eastern and Western Slavic Lands (Gdańsk: Gdańsk University Press, p. 410). The purpose of K. Szczesniak’s publication was a comprehensive collection of information on the use of plants in folk medicine, comparing it with official medicine and noting the verbal species accompanying folk medicine with specific ritual plants. The monograph complements the existing research on folk medicine in the Eastern and Western Slavic regions and the so-called zamova. The reviewed work deserves the attention of not only researchers of Slavic folk culture (folklorists, ethnolinguists), but also botanists and phytotherapists.

INFLUENCING FACTORS ON SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING QUALITY BASED ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGS) CONSIDERING COVID-19

INFLUENCING FACTORS ON SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING QUALITY BASED ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGS) CONSIDERING COVID-19

Author(s): Wiwi IDAWATI,Hayu S. PRABOWO,Anneta Rizki PRATIWI,Batara Maju SIMATUPANG / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

In 2020, the major companies in the Asia Pacific region faced challenges in sustainability performance reporting, primarily attributed to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This crisis compelled companies to reassess their sustainability goals. This study aims to analyze the relationship between corporate governance and corporate characteristics such as industry type and government ownership of sustainability reporting quality based on sustainable development goals (SDGs) with a population of 200 companies in ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines, listed on each country’s stock exchange. The research sample consisted of 84 companies selected through purposive sampling. The hypothesis testing model employed a multiple linear regression method and utilized the panel data regression analysis approach. The findings indicate that the three corporate governance components examined in this research board independence, audit committee, and managerial ownership, along with government ownership do not exert a significant influence on sustainability reporting quality based on the seventeen SDGs goals. Furthermore, we believe that this research is very important to be carried out in Indonesia, given that environmentally sensitive industries face the risk of environmental damage and therefore need legitimacy to maintain their operations, demonstrated through sustainability report reporting.
