Author(s): Hanefi Yazici / Language(s): English Issue: 25/2015

If the International Criminal Court (ICC) can not prosecute leaders who committed war crimes, it will be the end of justice and system for the international community. This study, examines both the efforts of international community to prosecute Assad, who committed war crimes in Syria, in the ICC, and the Russian factor in UN Security Council (UNSC), which has the authority for the statute of the international court of justice. The responsibility of Assad has been watched for a long time due to his crimes against humanity and war crimes in Syria. It is also vital that the General Secretary of UN declared that Assad committed crimes against humanity and war crimes and he must be prosecuted. In this regard, it is crucial how to prosecute Assad, because Syria has not ratified the Rome Statute of the ICC, so, just the attempt of the ICC Prosecutor for the jurisdiction over Assad in the ICC is inadequate.

Author(s): Nurhodja Akbulaev / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 15/2012

Almost all societies have some citizens living in poverty. Although the most severe poverty is in the developing world, there is evidence of poverty in every region. The fight against poverty is usually regarded as a social goal and many governments have some dedicated institutions or departments. Poverty itself is also likely to be a barrier for poverty reduction. In general, the government can directly help those in need. However another method in helping to fight poverty is to use microfinance approach. Microfinance tries to fight global poverty and bring opportunities to the world’s poorest people. With tiny loans and financial services, it helps the poor, mostly women, start businesses and escape poverty. Wierni jako zasób kontrhegemoniczny. Spór o krzyż w kontekście teorii hegemonii

Author(s): Michał Wróblewski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 01/2014

The first part of the text reconstructs the key elements of Birmingham school theory of culture in the context of Gramsci’s conception of hegemonic power. the second part of the text focuses on applying the above mentioned interpretative tools to the selected case study – events which took place in Krakowskie Przedmieście after the Smolensk plane crash. The main purpose is to show how “the cross conflict” can be understood as a routine hegemonic practice. I will focus on: the role of the Polish Catholic Church in constructing hegemonic power; defenders of the cross as a counter‐hegemonic resource; “the cross conflict” in the context of other “culture wars” which took place in Poland; the role of religion as a way of constructing resistance in symbolic realm.

Żywy trup. Jak kultura popularna reprodukuje lęk przed wykluczeniem

In this article I describe how “different” and “inclusion” act in texts of popular culture on example of the living dead concept. I claim that the living dead is a political category. There is a story about naked life which is designated to be a biopolitical substantiation. The paradigm for the concept of a living dead is a concentration camp.

Odkrywanie tabu w sferze publicznej. Metodologiczny kosmopolityzm wobec przemocy symbolicznej

Author(s): Mariusz Baranowski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 04/2012

Taboo issue of the public sphere, understood as the “inarticulate” prohibition of the reflection of fundamental foundations of social discourse itself, is one of the principal elements that prevent conclusive analysis of the mechanisms of power in the symbolic space. Therefore, the main aim of the present paper is to reveal – by using the paradigm of methodological cosmopolitanism (Ulrich Beck) – the problematic areas of – what Pierre Bourdieu has called – symbolic violence, and what the proposed approach here is synonymous with the subtle and often di cult to articulate mechanism of power in a broad sense.

We rarely realize that breaking taboos in public space can be done not only with the help of art. For a similar place where you can safely hide, at the same time allowing yourself to go beyond the generally accepted conventions, prohibitions and orders imposed on each member of the community, you can recognize the mask.

Co design może zdziałać? Dom jako zespół relacji

Co design może zdziałać? Dom jako zespół relacji

Author(s): Kamil Kuhr / Language(s): Polish Issue: 02/2017

An interpretation of „Better Shelter” by Ikea provides a point of departure for cultural analysis of the term „home”. By asking what design can do and how it affects different understandings of home territories, I prove that common meaning of „home” is a justification for the antagonistic division into us and them. As an alternative, I suggest that home territories should be seen as performative spaces (David Morley). I analyze „The Microbial Home” with reference to Judith Butler’s theory of bodies-as-living-set-of-relations in order to show that homes are analogous sets-of-relations. In this context, design would be a way of thinking that creates inclusive spaces and addresses social issues (i.e. global migrations, environmental degradation).

“Don’t Underestimate the Girls... Some of them are More Genuine Ultras than You”

Author(s): Kremena Iordanova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2017

Sports and football in particular are always considered a typical male occupation, which stresses male values and where the presence of the opposite sex is regarded as unnatural. In the last decade, the European stadiums witness the unprecedented presence of women attending the football games. This leads to the conclusion that the idea of male hegemony on the stadium could be questioned. The study is conducted among women–football fans in Bulgaria. The main questions, which it aims to answer, are: What are the ways of becoming a football fan? How do the female football fans spend their time in the circles that were until recently considered male? To what extent is their behaviour on the stadium independent?

Can One Eat Art? The Political, Socio-Economic and Artistic Role of Food in Peter Greenaway’s Film The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, And Her Lover

Can One Eat Art? The Political, Socio-Economic and Artistic Role of Food in Peter Greenaway’s Film The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, And Her Lover

Author(s): Małgorzata Kowalewska / Language(s): English Issue: 02/2018

The aim of the article is to present the relationship between food and politics based on the example of Peter’s Greenaway film The Cook, the Thief, his Wife, and her Lover. This particular Greenaway’s film is compelling for the purposes of the presented analysis, as he is an accredited painter and he uses food as references to historic paintings. In my article, I analyse the role of food (as an element of scenography in Greenaway’s film) as a means of explaining political and social problems presented. I will reference to history of art, political and social situation, as well as approach to food in the upper class in Great Britain in ’80s of the 20th century

RESISTANCE THROUGH SOUVLA AND KREMALA – PERFORMATIVE ACTS AND ACTIONS IN A PROTEST IN CYPRUS 2013

Author(s): Mike Hajimichael / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2018

This article explores an actual and online street protest which unfolded over a series of weeks in the Spring of 2013 when Cyprus experienced an economic crisis following the ‘bailout’-‘haircut of March 2013. In an effort to contextualize and explore the performative aspects of these events the author links this to art and protest as an expression of alternativeness and an avant-garde spirit embodying resonances of 1960’s and 1970’s art and protest as performative happenings. It is argued, unlike other similar contemporary contexts of economic crisis in the EU, such as Greece, Portugal and Spain, protests in Cyprus may not have been so massively populated but the spirit of performative art was expressed in innovative ways, as documented and shared through social media as an alternative platform of expression, which ultimately fills a void that exists in the contemporary Cypriot political landscape.

Рокерската субкултура в малкия град

Рокерската субкултура в малкия град

Author(s): Zlatina Bogdanova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2019

The paper presents a review of the rocker subculture in Bulgaria, describing and interpreting its elements from the perspective of subcultural studies. The research is focused on the development of a local subculture in the context of a small town(Asenovgrad), where an influential community of rockers has been formed since the mid-1990s. Starting with the premise that the youth subculture is both a supranational and local phenomenon, the local subcultural identity of rockers is reviewed and analyzed in reference to their narratives, practices, club membership rules and ethics. The museum of the rockers in Asenovgrad “The people with bikes“ (2011 – 2017)is considered as a special case of the public representation of the subculture through artefacts and settings symbolic of the ideas behind the rockers’ world brotherhood.
