Fashion Photography on Social Media: Insights from Hong Kong Fashion Image Producers

Fashion Photography on Social Media: Insights from Hong Kong Fashion Image Producers

Author(s): Athena Choi / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2016

This study draws on fashion and culture theories to explore the influence of visual sharing culture on social media in fashion. The objective is to interpret the perceived creative values and the meanings of such cultural phenomenon from the perspective of fashion media industry in Hong Kong. In-depth interviews, in the exploratory semi-structured format, were adopted in which 20 fashion image producers in Hong Kong were interviewed regarding their increasing involvement in professional fashion image making and blogging. Among the 20 respondents, 12 respondents were younger generation of image producers with experience around 3 years, while 8 respondents have been in the industry for 15 years in average. The findings of this research indicated that the nature of visual oriented social media platform supports a new communication model between the new generation of fashion image producers and image audience. It is evident that there is a new trend for young fashion lovers to become successfully engaged in the industry as career bloggers who can create their styles and express their ideas through fashion imaging and sharing. On the other side, the professionalism and authenticity of the young generation of fashion bloggers are sometimes in questions. The finding is significant to further academic studies on the value of fashion visual communication on social media, and to business sectors, in which this study provides insight for young fashion lovers for career development.

Od sociálneho radikalizmu k radikálnemu socializmu 1918 - 1920

Od sociálneho radikalizmu k radikálnemu socializmu 1918 - 1920

Author(s): Juraj Benko / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 2/2015

The study deals with the circumstances of the formation of social protests within the context of the lower classes during the first years after the establishment of Czechoslovakia and with the relationship between social radicalism and radical socialism during this period. On one hand, the author focuses on the social causes of the protests, on the other hand, the ways in which the protests were expressed are analysed. Considering the establishment of Czechoslovakia, the emphasis is put on the process of continuity of the development of social and economic circumstances, in which the lower classes lived in this period. The aspect of the discontinuity of political development remains overlooked. It is distinguished by the differences between the interests and political behaviour of two quite separate social worlds – the interests of the elite and middle class on one hand and the interests of the lower classes, that had been most damaged by the social and economic situation at the end of the war and after the establishment of Czechoslovakia on the other. With socially differentiated views and emphasizing the continuity of the social and economic situation, the process of the national-democratic revolution in 1918 (accentuated among the higher and middle classes, as well as in the official history) seems to parallel the specific development of social protests within the context of the lower classes. At the same time, the study focuses on the multiple radical lexicons present in the sphere of discourse and used in the radicalization of the lower classes. The communist lexicon, which was significantly used by the lower classes in towns and rural areas almost immediately after war, played an important role as a political language of social protest.

Таксономичен поглед към фалшивите новини

Таксономичен поглед към фалшивите новини

Author(s): Ivan Valchanov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2018

The development of the Internet and social media and networks as a media environment and communication channels combined with the specificity of the journalistic profession in the online environment are a factor which contributes to the emergence and proliferation of fake news. The lack of reliable fact checking by the media and the fast news consumption by the public lead to mass disinformation about certain issues or subjects. The current paper examines fake news from several points of view and describes the models of their use – as harmless jokes, as lack of journalistic competence or professionalism and as means of manipulation and intentional misleading of public opinion. The attempts of big media corporations to fight fake news are also described.

La concretezza come procedimento. Contributo per una storia di Memorial

La concretezza come procedimento. Contributo per una storia di Memorial

Author(s): Simone Guagnelli / Language(s): Italian Issue: 1/2023

The present article offers a brief history of the Russian non-governmental organisation Memorial, a recent winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, from its origins in the 1980s to the present day. It also proposes an attempt to create a bibliography which could be used for a larger monographic volume, a more detailed work capable of going into more detail about the founding instances of the most important cultural movement of resistance in Russian and post-Soviet society. The nearly simultaneous invasion of Ukraine and the banning of Memorial make the publication of such a work urgent. It would not only outline the organisation’s development but also become a manifesto of concrete common action for a new Europe arising at the end of the conflict, which could thrive on the shared themes of historical memory and the defense of civil rights.

Социально-психологическая адаптация студентов – представителей коренных малочисленных народов Севера, Сибири и Дальнего Востока к колледжу в новой социокультурной среде: теоретическая модель

Author(s): Anastasiya Vladimirovna Miklyaeva,Julia S. Pezhemskaya,Valeriya V. Khoroshih,Irina A. Baeva / Language(s): Russian Issue: 6/2022

Introduction. The study examines the psychological, academic, social and cultural adaptation of indigenous students to a vocational school environment with a focus on representatives of indigenous peoples from the North, Siberia and the Far East. The purpose of the research is to model the processes of students’ socio-psychological adaptation to vocational college in a new socio-cultural environment. Materials and Methods. The systematic scholarly literature review was conducted in 2022 using the following search engines and electronic bibliographic databases: Google Scholar, Scopus, RSCI, and ERIC. The analysis included Russian and English language articles published between 2000 and 2022 reporting the results of the original empirical research on the problem of student adjustment to college in a changing socio-cultural environment. Of the 975 articles selected for systematic analysis, 68 sources met the search criteria. Results. A systematic literature review enabled us to identify two groups of social psychological resources for student adaptation to college in the new sociocultural environment: individual resources (individual psychological and academic) and environmental resources (including educational environment within the college and system of interpersonal relations). Based on the results of the systematic review, a theoretical model of the socio-psychological adjustment of the students (representatives of indigenous minorities of the North, Siberia and the Far East) to the vocational education institution in the new socio-cultural environment, which describes the procedural and structural elements of the adjustment process, as well as the interplay of personal, meso- and macro-environmental adaptation resources is proposed. Conclusions. The theoretical adaptation model of Students from Indigenous Minorities of the North, Siberia students, created on the basis of a systematic analysis of the literature, makes it possible to develop on its basis the technology for assessing the adaptation resources of the students of the CIS and DV and the measures of psychological, educational and social support for students belonging to the risk group, to the development of programs to prevent academic mismatch and student dropout. The prospects of the study include empirical verification of the proposed model.

INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

Author(s): Małgorzata Gruchoła,Aneta Duda / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Both the world’s and European literature does not sufficiently discuss the topic of media representations of emotions. There are ongoing disputes whether media representations of emotions should be treated as a new paradigm, meta-process, communication space, social phenomenon or research program. Peter Lunt and Sonia Livingstone, in their critical appraisal of the concept made by Stig Hjarvard, David Deacon and James Stanyer, Andreas Hepp, Stig Hjarvard, Knut Lundby, postulate that the umbrella term “mediatisation” covers too many different theories and studies, bound only by a fascination with the media and their influence on social and private life, rather than by a fully-fledged theory and methodology.

Znaczenie czynników behawioralnych w zarządzaniu kryzysowym

Author(s): Monika Czerwonka,Joanna Siembida,Aleksandra Staniszewska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 192/2023

The recent events of the past two years indicate that effective crisis management cannot ignore behavioural factors. When analysing social reactions, it becomes clear that they are far from standard, rational behaviour in exceptional conditions such as a pandemic, a migration crisis, or the threat of an armed conflict. Effective economic and financial policies of a state should be based on predictions related to herd behaviour and the theory of nudge introduced by R. Thaler and C.R. Sunstein in 2017. According to this theory, the assumptions of behavioural economics can be utilised successfully in shaping public policies with appropriate tools (simplifications, default options, framing, approximation of consequences, design, or reference to social norms). The aim of this article is to review the use of behavioural economics tools in situations of extraordinary, unexpected, and large-scale crises. Examples of the use of behavioural innovations and herd behaviour in different contexts by the authorities from various parts of the world are presented. This review can serve as an inspiration for implementing new solutions based on the theory of nudges, herd behaviour, and the behaviour of altruistic individuals. The article uses theories from the field of behavioural economics (the prospect theory, nudge theory) and gift economy as well as media reports on methods to combat and mitigate the negative effects of crises in the healthcare system and forced migration in different countries, including those with different cultural backgrounds. This article provides an overview of such methods and presents the mechanisms of behavioural economics that underlie them, along with the positive effects of using these methods, thereby demonstrating their effectiveness.

Populist Attitudes and Conspiracy Beliefs in Slovak Society: Pandemic vs Post-pandemic Data

Populist Attitudes and Conspiracy Beliefs in Slovak Society: Pandemic vs Post-pandemic Data

Author(s): Ivana Václaviková,Lucia Viteková / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

The continued success of populist political subjects can be observed in many countries in recent years, including Slovakia. Society is polarized, and dissatisfaction, anger, and fear are coming to the fore. This has been exacerbated by the pandemic, which, as a crisis, typically increases the potential for the spread of unfounded or even conspiratorial beliefs. As the occurrence of the mentioned phenomena postulates similar questions, the study's objective is to identify the rate of occurrence of populist attitudes and trust in conspiracy content during and after the pandemic. At different stages of the pandemic course, the prevalence of populist attitudes in the sample of Slovak adult men and women (N = 1345) and the tendency to trust conspiracy beliefs both in general and specifically in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic are examined. Using the Populist Attitudes Scale, the Generic conspiracist beliefs scale, and the authors' questionnaire on belief in conspiracy claims related to the COVID-19 virus, we found a high prevalence of the variables of interest, with the highest rates observed in women, people of older age and people with lower education. Across the different phases of data collection, attitudes and beliefs were relatively stable, and a linear association was observed between them. The results demonstrate the validity of the study of populist attitudes and the tendency to believe in conspiracy content, while at the same time raising questions for further research.

War Fact-Checking: Strategies and Methodology for Debunking Disinformation on the War in Ukraine at the Demagog.org.pl Website

Author(s): Monika Szafrańska / Language(s): English Issue: 3 (259)/2024

The first victim of the war is truth. During armed conflicts, disinformation is particularly dangerous, and attempts to manipulate public opinion – whether in the form of a limited set of information or even fake news – should be expected on each side of the ongoing conflict. In this situation, the ability to verify information distributed in the media space is of great importance, especially in the context of the contemporary omnipresence of social media. The purpose of the article is to present, in a form of case study, the strategies for debunking false information on the conflict in Ukraine on the example of the fact-checking portal Demagog.org.pl. This analysis allowed drawing conclusions on the functions of fact-checking in the media system, among which the most important are control, educational and alarm functions. The research contributes to the media studies literature by shedding some light on fact-checking initiatives’ role in the media system.

Conspiracy Theories Generated by Digital Anti-vaccination Communities. Netnographic Case Study of a Facebook Group

Author(s): Bogna Halska-Pionka,Patrycja Cheba / Language(s): English Issue: 3 (259)/2024

The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to the emergence of anti-vaccine groups and the dissemination of conspiracy theories on social media. These pseudoscientific conspiracy theories have led to the spread of xenophobic, racist, and potentially harmful information within society. This article aims to address a research gap by delving into the contextual factors that support the development of conspiracy theories. The aim of this article is to recognize the essence and activity of members of the digital community and to identify the contexts (cultural, economic, political, social, etc.) supporting the process of generating conspiracy theories using the example of a Facebook group. The methodological approach employed will be virtual ethnography (netnography), conducted through an exploratory case study of a selected Facebook group. The empirical data were taken from March 2020 to June 2022. To streamline the analysis, the research team extracted four keywords or concepts – “coronavirus”, “COVID-19”, “COVID”, and “SARS‑CoV-2” – based on the frequency of their occurrence in the content. The research adopts an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing upon insights from media studies, social communication, sociology, and anthropology. The objective of this article is to present the current status of the project, which has received funding under the Strategic Program Excellence Initiative of Jagiellonian University.

Remembrance Days in European Union – between oblivion, national manifestations and an European narrative?

Author(s): Katarzyna Suszkiewicz,Elisabeth Büttner / Language(s): English Issue: 6/2016

W ostatnich latach z okazji rocznic zorganizowano wiele inicjatyw. Artykuł przedstawia analizę 3 różnych wydarzeń związanych z oficjalnymi obchodami trzech międzynarodowych dni pamięci w Polsce, Niemczech i Francji. Są to Dzień Pamięci o Holokauście, Międzynarodowy Dzień Pamięci o Holokauście oraz Europejski Dzień Pamięci o Sprawiedliwych. Wybrane kraje reprezentują różne doświadczenia historyczne wojny i okoliczności, w jakich przebiegał proces pamięci zbiorowej.

Image as a Propaganda Tool? Visual Representations of the ‘New Man’ in History Textbooks of the Socialist Era

Author(s): Esilda Luku / Language(s): English Issue: 24/2024

This paper aims to analyze whether the images employed in national history textbooks in Albania for the eight-year school under the socialist regime were used as a propaganda tool to communicate the Party’s vision for the socialist transformation of society. It adopts Kress and Van Leuween’s visual socio-semiotic approach to examine the images in terms of their representational, interactive, and compositional meta-function. The findings indicate that most of the images depict the “new socialist man,” who is willing to build up socialism and defend the homeland; they have been represented close to the viewer, as the latter belongs to the “new socialist society,” and the majority of the images place the “new man” in the center of the composition. Consequently, images in history textbooks served the state propaganda to manipulate and indoctrinate the young generation.

GLOBALIZATION IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIOLOGICAL RESEARCH

GLOBALIZATION IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIOLOGICAL RESEARCH

Author(s): Nicolae Moroșan / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

It is widely recognized that globalization is not a new concept; on the contrary, the ancient world was much more interconnected than we often imagine. Throughout history, numerous empires sought territorial expansion and domination on a global scale. D. Lehmann identifies religion as the "original globalizer" in his article "Religion and Globalization". In the past, Sufi orders, Catholic missionaries and Buddhist monks carried the message and practice of the faith across vast regions before these territories became defined nation-states. Today, however, globalization is taking new and more intense forms, affecting religion in unprecedented ways. Regardless of where we are, most of us feel a connection to a global whole, living in universes of inclusion or exclusion, with desires or resentments of the global pace and flux. The article proposes a multilateral approach to globalization, based on the perspectives of contemporary sociologists who offer guidelines for a deeper understanding of this complex phenomenon. These perspectives emphasize the interactions between religion and globalization, highlighting how religious beliefs adapt and transform in this dynamic context where religious values and practices intersect with global influences.
