POSTSOVIETSKE DIVADELNÉ PARALELY

Author(s): Nadežda Lindovská / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 01/2014

The study is a comparative reflection on the development of performing arts in Russia and Slovakia at the turn of the millennium. Understanding the peripheries of post-Soviet transformation of Russian theater deepens the knowledge of social and aesthetic contexts regarding the transformation of Slovak theatre at the turn of the 21st century. The disintegration of the Soviet Bloc in the late 80s and the early 90s of the 20th century changed the situation in the world and launched a major transformation in the post-communist countries. Along with the economic and political system, culture was also inevitably changing. And not only in the former satelites of the Soviet Union, but in Russia itself the art outgrew the Soviet model in both, ideological as well as aesthetic plan. Privileged status of Russian culture has become a thing of the past. In the following years, Slovakia has become the independent state with parliamentary democracy and market economy and joined the EU. Russia has undergone its own path of development. Despite a different orientation of the two countries at the turn of the millennium, both the Russian and Slovak theater experienced in many ways analogous situation: the decline in social status of performing arts, opening to the world, the introduction of so-called new drama, transformation of directing and acting, etc. When approaching breakthrough processes in Russian theatre, the study is based on the author‘s personal knowledge of Russian theater and on the publications written by Russian theatre critics Marina Davydova, End Theatrical Era and Anna Vislova, Russian Theatre at the Turn of the Millenium.

Funkcje toposu Szatana we współczesnym polskim dyskursie religijnym

Author(s): Marzena Makuchowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2016

In the contemporary Polish Catholic discourse one can notice increased presence of figure of Satan and Biblical topos of his fight with God. The figure appears not only in strictly religious texts but also in discussion on up to date phenomenon of social life, such as abortion, in-vitro fertilization, homosexual partnerships and others. The article is trying to answer the question about functions of this topos. The answer is being searched with usage of sociological findings on the role of language in religion and the role of religion in social life – both issues are discussed in the first chapter. The second chapter, based on fragments from catholic press, presents ways of language construction of analyzed figure. The third chapter focuses on four functions of the topos. The first one is to support religious vision of the world; the second is to strengthen so called nomos, which is the conjunction of rules on which the society is based; the next two functions have rhetorical, persuasive character. The Biblical topos is a kind of a rhetorical formula, which enables in an easy and simple way to explain and to judge the reality but at the same time it gives a very schematic and simplified picture.

Author(s): Marcin Wójcik / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2016

Transformations that occur in Polish rural areas also impact tourism and recreation enterprises. Starting the rural development programs successfully activates processes of modernisation in many fields of social and economic life, including material base (infrastructure), which is an essential element in the functioning of settlement systems. The aim of this study is to present selected results of the expert analysis of 50 Polish villages, which are characterised by a high concentration of cultural values – material, institutional and spiritual. The assessment of a group of rural settlements was meant to determine the potential for creating the Network of the Most Interesting Villages (SNW). The article presents the factual basis for such evaluation, the differentiation in group of villages according to selected traits, especially those describing the infrastructural plane for developing the tourism and recreational functions. The recipe for success includes many elements. The most important ones include attractive spatial configuration in which there is no shortage of central locations that are the focus of educational and recreational functions, the social awareness of the value of one’s own heritage and the ability to describe it (the purpose of stay), the existence of long-lasting institutions referring to the historical memory and communal activities, the ability to create the media for narration placed in the internal environment, somewhat-formed path of its own development based on own resources (developed tourism functions), as well as participation in local and regional network of town with varying functions, and natural and anthropogenic environmental values (tourist regions).

Idee antropogeograficzne w pracach Marii Dobrowolskiej (1895-1984)

Idee antropogeograficzne w pracach Marii Dobrowolskiej (1895-1984)

Author(s): Marcin Wójcik / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2016

Polish anthropogeography, especially of the interwar period, still remains one of the key periods of reference in studies of geographical variation in research patterns and approaches. These issues are especially interesting in the case of geographers, whose scientific careers were shaped by various events that changed the history of the country and the nation. The main objective of this paper is to identify the guiding concepts of the author, that on one hand formed certain unchanging theoretical and methodological stances in the Second Republic, while on the other served as a modernisation of such assumptions based on political and ideological conditions. Many works referring to the idea of social evolution (e.g. the evolution of the agricultural landscape) had not been completed or published before 1939, while post-war assumptions and conclusions were heavily influenced by the interpretations of variable social and economic structures based on Marxist ideology. This created a methodologically eclectic interpretation of transformations. The work of Maria Dobrowolska discussing the transformation of cultural landscape and the variability in settlement over the ages also adhered to this. Anthropogeography, whose ambitious goal was to strive for a holistic explanation, corresponded well with the concepts of social evolution that used the analogies of organic wholes. Geography’s emphasis on the relationship between the humans and the natural environment reinforced in geographers formed in the inter-war period the feeling that organicism was an adequate method of inquiry into social development in the context of environmental variability and spatial mobility, which was definitely visible in M. Dobrowolska’s works on the evolution of cultural landscape and settlement network, especially following World War II.

Социологическият анализ на икономическите неравенства: проблеми на методологията

Социологическият анализ на икономическите неравенства: проблеми на методологията

Author(s): Alexander Stoyanov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2015

The paper outlines basic elements of the sociological analysis of economic inequalities. The baseline argument of the paper is that economic inequalities are a sociological concept which carries different content in comparison with economic differentiation and heterogeneity of incomes, which in turn are most often perceived as direct proxies of economic inequalities. The theoretical analysis of the concepts of economic differentiation and economic inequality made is focused on their specific interpretation schemes and measurement strategies and methods. The main problematic areas of classic measures of economic differentiation and are outlined including an analysis of most common research findings. The focus on the sociological analysis of economic inequalities (interpreted as status distances between economic roles and resources associated with these roles) includes the principle aspects of this analysis and a comprehensive research program (including concepts and indicators). Some methodological conclusions regarding the interpretations of economic inequalities are made, based on three ISSP surveys (1992, 1999, and 2009). Also based on empirical data some of elements of the outlined research program with regards to Bulgaria are explored: economic differentiation (Gini and extraction ratio), status identification its relationship to subjective social class, etc.

Nowa Humanistyka: w poszukiwaniu granic

Author(s): Agata Bielik-Robson / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2017

Bielik-Robson proposes a critical analysis of the New Humanities. Despite the seeming continuity of emancipatory approaches, she argues, the New Humanities are not founded on enlightenment philosophy but on Heidegger and his unconditional critique of modern subjectivity and its Machenschaft, i.e. its calculating attitude to the world, to which it does not feel connected. The lack of connection also signifies a lack of ties: the unbridled subject of calculating rationality turns out to be the source of unlimited violence towards being. The New Humanities oppose the hubris of such a notion of subjective freedom by trying to identify its limits: to link it with existence once again, and in this way to tie it up, to entrap and tether it. The goal is to experience the ‘blessing of limits’: not to make a progressive or transgressive move towards the exit, but to make a regressive move, somewhat like the prodigal son – a manoeuvre that the tragic Greeks described as nostos or ‘return home’.

This study focuses on the evaluation of a training program aimed at young lawbreakers designed to prevent Gender-Based Cyber Violence (GBCV). The program was implemented in five European countries (Spain, Finland, Italy, Portugal and Romania), and the training materials were developed by expert researchers, and then reviewed and discussed by the trainers and young people for their improvement and adaptation to the target group. A mixed research methodology combining quantitative and qualitative approaches was used. On the quantitative side, a survey was implemented with a pre-post design without a control group to examine changes in the youths’ responses before and after the training. For the qualitative approach, open-ended interviews were conducted to gather participants' viewpoints. The results showed significant differences pre and post, with their conceptions of GBCV and sexism particularly improving after the training, while Internet safety actions also increased. The main lessons learned by young people were related to gender stereotypes, types of GBCV, discrimination and its forms, and recognizing themselves as perpetrators and/or victims. The trainers’ evaluations of the group’s knowledge, their participation in the training activities, and their development of emotional and digital competencies to cope with GBCV, were all positive.

Beauty as an Investment: The Relationship between Physical Appearance, Social Status, and Mental Well-Being

Beauty as an Investment: The Relationship between Physical Appearance, Social Status, and Mental Well-Being

Author(s): Svetlana NIKSON,Stefan COJOCARU / Language(s): English Issue: 88/2025

Throughout history, additional dimensions have been ascribed to the human body, reflecting both individuals’ self-perception and the way they are viewed by others. As a result, the body has constantly been influenced by rituals, customs, and treatments aimed at enhancing, modifying, displaying, adorning, or concealing certain features. The advancement of medicine in general and aesthetic medicine in particular, has made the pursuit of beauty more accessible. With the growing tendency to perceive the body as an evolving process and a “project”, modern society increasingly treats it as a long-term investment, intended to confer advantages, prestige, and recognition. Researchers and sociologists have explored the connection between physical appearance and social or personal status, revealing a strong correlation between one’s external look and societal standing. Their studies indicate that individuals actively strive to present themselves in the best possible way, aligning with social norms and class expectations. This pursuit involves maintaining a proper diet, engaging in physical activities, and undergoing various medical and cosmetic procedures. Aesthetic clinics serve as hubs for these services, helping individuals align their physical appearance with their personal and social aspirations. As a result, such clinics have witnessed a significant rise in popularity in recent years. This paper describes the effect of outer appearance s on the individuals’ social position, what people are willing to do in order to change their appearance due to a social motive, and how this effect can be explained by theories and paradigms in the field of social sciences.

The research relevance is determined by the demographic issues and psychological studies that have recently attracted the attention of specialists and the public, which highlight various problems of families with reproductive health disorders, and the reaction of society to infertility is one of the problems bothering people diagnosed with infertility. However, the issue of the psychological and reproductive characteristics of such families requires further study and elaboration. The research aims to study the impact of infertility problems in marriages of urban and rural women in Kazakhstan and the reaction of society to infertile couples. The study examines the main factors of impact on reproductive health, the causes of female and male infertility, and society’s assessment of childless couples. The experimental research was conducted in the central part of Kazakhstan: in the clinic of reproductive medicine and women’s consultation of a rural hospital. A total of 198 women from among the patients diagnosed with infertility were interviewed. The research showed that due to childlessness, women face stigmatisation in society: 21% of urban women and 78% of rural women. According to the medical anamneses studied, 154 infertile women were registered with the diagnosis of primary infertility. According to examination data, 44 women were found to have congenital or hereditary infertility. Almost all the women interviewed are satisfied with their family life. The method of comparative, systemic, logical, and content analysis, as well as the method of synthesis and analogy, were used in the study of this topic. The practical value of this article lies in the fact that the main provisions and obtained conclusions of the analysed material can be used in conducting classes in sociology, and psychology, used by students specialising in the field of infertility, conception, and reproductive health.

The current number contains nine articles and one book review. Most of the articles delve into Romanian context, but the use of the English language has broadened access to knowledge and understanding for any reader interested in the discussed issues.
