Wykluczenie cyfrowe a bezpieczeństwo współczesnych Polaków – wybrane problemy. Perspektywa pedagoga społecznego

Author(s): Małgorzata Orłowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2016

The cultural capital is one of the most important variables determining the level of human security. This problem is analysed with the example of the Internet use. The asset of the analysis is the low interest in the issue in international literature to date, and (very importantly) a very large study sample, usually unavailable to a single researcher.

The Mediating Role of Learning Goal Orientation on Psychological Capital and Performance Goal Orientation among Gen Zers

The Mediating Role of Learning Goal Orientation on Psychological Capital and Performance Goal Orientation among Gen Zers

Author(s): Maria Socorro Cristina L. Fernando / Language(s): English Issue: 84/2024

The research considers Generation Z (Gen Zers) who are characterized by diversity, innovation and resiliency. They have also been called Generation Resilient having hurdled the challenges brought about by the global pandemic and emerged with confidence and numerous possibilities for themselves. The study aims to explore how learning goal orientation significantly mediates psychological capital and performance goal orientation. A sample of 120 Gen Zers from the Philippines participated in an online survey. Descriptive and Inferential statistical analysis (simple and multiple linear regression) were used for data analysis. The Mediation analysis was based on four step approach mediation analysis by Baron and Kenny (1986 as cited by Newsom, 2024). Simple linear regression results showed that (1) psychological capital has a significant influence on performance goal orientation; (2) psychological capital has a significant influence on learning goal orientation; (3) learning goal orientation has significant influence on performance goal orientation. Multiple linear regression shows that both Psychological capital and learning goal orientation has significant influence on performance goal orientation and therefore based on the mediation analysis approach it can be concluded that learning goal orientation has significant partial mediation on psychological capital towards performance goal orientation. The results are significant for the development at the personal and professional levels of Gen Zers, whether they are self-employed or entrepreneurs or as reference for human resource development in companies where the Gen Zers are employed and being developed for future capabilities in their career moves.

The Role of Learning Resulting from Students’ Experiences in Shaping Their Identity and Perception of the Significance of Smart Tourism Destination

The Role of Learning Resulting from Students’ Experiences in Shaping Their Identity and Perception of the Significance of Smart Tourism Destination

Author(s): Silvia-Maria Chireac,Vicent GARCÍA PERIS / Language(s): English Issue: 84/2024

This research presents an analysis of the participation and interaction of 129 students from the Faculty of Teacher Training Education (University of Valencia) with tourist places cultural heritage from the Valencia city. The analysis of our students’ affective evaluation and interpretation of a touristic place through smart tourism was a major factor that impacted their perception of the cultural heritage significance of a certain place. Therefore, our findings suggest that there is a strong correlation between students’ cultural experiences, awareness and perception of a touristic place and their interpretation of the economic, social and cultural significance of the touristic places. Tourism experiences of our students contributed to transformative learning acquired by immersion in a new knowledge as a result of travelling and living in one of the most visited regions in Spain.

Identyfikacja potrzeb psychologiczno-społecznych młodzieży licealnej nacechowanej dużymi aspiracjami edukacyjno-zawodowymi i analiza wpływu organizacji na dobrostan badanej grupy. Sprawozdanie wyników projektu

Author(s): Katarzyna B. Wojtkiewicz,Magdalena Łużniak-Piecha,Justyna Sarnowska,Sylwia Barakeh,Katarzyna Szczepaniak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3-4/2023

This report presents research findings on creating and managing the developmental strategy within a school organization with students characterised by high educational and career aspirations. The study aimed at assessing the alignment of this strategy with the quality of life paradigm for the stakeholders. In the initial project stage, a qualitative study (N = 22) comprised focus group interviews and workshop elements, while utilizing visual communication through arts (Social Issues in Art & Music) [cf. Yeo, 2014]. An online survey (CAWI) was also conducted with IB participants (N = 141). The survey addressed workshop-related issues and included the adapted Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS) questionnaire to evaluate the psychological well-being of students. The research examined psychosocial consequences resulting from the heightened expectations placed on the high school students (by parents, peers or teachers) and the influence of organizational culture (school) on student wellbeing. Most respondents exhibited symptoms of occupational burnout typically found among individuals in their forties [Lenton & Łużniak-Piecha 2016]. No strategic organizational actions that indirectly or directly monitored and positively impacted student well-being were identified. The report identifies vital premises of observed phenomena and offers managerial recommendations. The researchers implemented crisis intervention at the final stage of the project.

The Effect of Economic and Social Inequalities on Academic Success in Türkiye: Evidence from the Classical and Bayesian Discrete Choice Models

The Effect of Economic and Social Inequalities on Academic Success in Türkiye: Evidence from the Classical and Bayesian Discrete Choice Models

Author(s): Muhammet Kutlu,Özer Hüseyin / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2024

The main objective of this study is to determine the effects of economic and social inequalities on academic success and to test whether the cycle of inequality is active through education. This objective is accomplished using classical and Bayesian discrete choice models for the sample obtained from Türkiye. The results reveal that students’ economic and social characteristics affect their academic success and that these characteristics are possible sources of inequality in education. According to the findings obtained from models employed in the study, income, private school education, parental education level, region of residence, neediness to work, and the level of happiness with the family were found to have statistically significant effects on student success in getting into the desired university department and university placement ranking. Additionally, the results are compatible with the studies that report that the Bayesian approach yields more stable and appropriate results with smaller standard errors and confidence intervals.

Budgetary policy and Macroeconomic resilience in Morocco: Assessment and Impact

Budgetary policy and Macroeconomic resilience in Morocco: Assessment and Impact

Author(s): Oussama Ritahi,Abdellah Echaoui / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2024

This study investigates the macroeconomic resilience of the Moroccan economy using a comprehensive analysis of key indicators and policy variables. Utilising data from sources such as the World Bank, we examined GDP per capita, government debt, government final expenditure, agriculture and industry sectors as a percentage of GDP, output gap, and trade openness. Applying the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) method, we established both long-run and short-run relationships between these variables and the output gap, which represents the cyclical trend in the economy. Our findings revealed that both government final consumption in % of GDP and government debt in % of GDP have a significant impact on the economy as they were found to be countercyclical measures, mitigating the adverse effects of shocks on the economy. The ARDL model’s diagnostic tests confirmed the validity of our estimations, ensuring robust and reliable results. Overall, this study sheds light on the budgetary determinants of macroeconomic resilience in the Moroccan economy and provides valuable insights for policymakers to implement measures that promote stability and sustainability. By carefully managing government expenditure and debt levels, the Moroccan economy can better navigate economic shocks and foster a more resilient and prosperous future.

Evaluation of the I-Voting System for Remote Primary Elections of the Czech Pirate Party

Evaluation of the I-Voting System for Remote Primary Elections of the Czech Pirate Party

Author(s): Tomáš Martínek,Michal Malý / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2024

The integration of digital technologies into political processes represents a pivotal shift in the operational dynamics of political parties, highlighting an evolution from traditional to digital platforms. This transformation offers greater member engagement and decision-making transparency while also introducing new challenges in terms of security and control. This study presents an analytical overview of the Helios voting system as implemented by the Czech Pirate Party, used not only for primary elections, offering a critical examination of its operational framework, security measures, verification processes, and implications for intra-party democracy and member engagement. The Czech Pirate Party's engagement with Helios exemplifies a broader trend toward digitalization within political organizations, reflecting both the potential benefits and inherent challenges of such technological adoption. Drawing on theoretical insights from the literature on political party transformation in the digital age, this article assesses how i-voting systems like Helios can potentially enhance or detract from internal democracy. The discourse around digital platforms is nuanced, revealing opportunities for increased democratic engagement alongside risks of enhanced centralization and control. Empirical data from a survey of the Czech Pirate Party's membership base provides insights into perceptions of the Helios system's usability, security, and its impact on democratic processes within the party. The study further investigates Helios's technical aspects, focusing on its security protocols, verification mechanisms, and governance structures related to data and platform ownership, to understand its implications for electoral integrity and party governance. The research aims to contribute to the dialogue on e-voting platforms, highlighting the need for a careful balance between embracing technological advancements and upholding democratic principles.

DID is defined in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) as a “disruption of identity characterized by the presence of two or more distinct personality states.” This involves discontinuity in sense of self and agency as well as variations in “affect, behavior, consciousness, memory, perception, cognition, or sensory-motor functioning.” The DSM-5 estimates the 12-month prevalence of DID as 1.5% of the American adult population. In other studies of DID, the prevalence is estimated to be between 1% and 3%, with higher rates among patients with other comorbid psychiatric conditions. In the inpatient setting, the prevalence of DID has been estimated to be as high as 7.5%. The severity of DID in terms of distinct identity varies from two reported identities to 23 reported distinct identities, however the average number of reported distinct identities stated is 13.1 DID has been associated with or may co-occur with other psychiatric conditions. Many studies have shown an association between DID and history of childhood trauma or maltreatment between ages 4-8. About 80- 100% of patients diagnosed with DID have a comorbid diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or a lifetime history of PTSD.

The Aggressiveness of Institutionalized Minors Depending on the Type of Residence

Author(s): Catalin-George Fedor,Daniela Cojocaru / Language(s): English Issue: 86/2024

This article presents the findings of a research study that sought to identify and compare the levels of aggression exhibited by institutionalised minors, contingent on the type of residence in which they are situated. To this end, the research was conducted on a sample of 200 minors residing in four different forms of care: foster care, traditional placement centre, and apartment. The Buss and Perry aggression questionnaire was employed to assess four dimensions of aggression: verbal, physical, anger and hostility. The results demonstrate the presence of all forms of aggression in the research subjects, albeit with varying levels contingent on the type of residence of the institutionalised minor. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the child protection system requires reform, with an emphasis on developing the maternal care component and reducing the proportion of traditional foster care centres.

In and Out of the Text: Polish 1920s Avant-garde Poetics of Pleasure

In and Out of the Text: Polish 1920s Avant-garde Poetics of Pleasure

Author(s): Agnieszka Jeżyk / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

“We are related to enjoyment as something which intimately belongs to us, to our corporal existence and inner vitality, yet is separated from and independent from us, and thus can be surprising, bewildering, burdensome, disgusting, overwhelming, terrifying, thrilling, conflicted, uncanny, uncontrollable (and sometimes even pleasurable)” – claims Aaron Schuster (2016: 44). According to the theorist, enjoyment can manifest as its opposite, especially in the context of its representations in literature. In this essay, I would like to look at avant-garde erotic poems from the interwar period that address the fascinating entanglement of the bodily and the textual. The metaphors of reading and writing, lyrical dialogue between some of the poems, metatextual reflections on the nature of erotic poetry, and the problem of embodiment are some of the strategies that Bruno Jasieński (Moja nieśmiertelność [My Immortality], Słowo o słowie [A Word about a Word], Na bis [An Encore]), Tadeusz Peiper (Naga [Naked], Ja, Ty [Me, You]), and Mila Elin (Książka [The Book], Głód [Hunger]) use to discuss the joys and challenges of trying to represent jouissance in the text. The starting point for my reflection is Alenka Zupančič’s diagnosis of a similar type of satisfaction coming from sex and talking about sex and her insights on the procedures of intellectualizing sexuality.

Współzamieszkiwanie. O wykorzystaniu wielostronnego studium przypadku w metodologii badań migracyjnych

Współzamieszkiwanie. O wykorzystaniu wielostronnego studium przypadku w metodologii badań migracyjnych

Author(s): Kamil Łuczaj / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2024

The primary objective of this paper is to address the methodology employed in qualitative migration research. It involves a theoretical analysis of the methodological challenges associated with a case study design, necessitating the collection of accounts from multiple individuals participating in the studied process or event. The second aim is to empirically illustrate these considerations through a study focusing on the relationship between Polish hosts and Ukrainian guests (2022–23). The gathered empirical material indicates the effectiveness of applying the technique of cross stories (récits croisés) derived from biographical research, along with the ontological-epistemological difficulties encountered. The paper does not aim to offer a comprehensive analysis of the cohabitation phenomenon. Instead, it contributes to the field by explicitly citing significant portions of raw material and elucidating their context. Its impact on migration studies lies in demonstrating, from a methodological perspective, that the simultaneous examination of various viewpoints and definitions of situations allows researchers to leverage the full potential of qualitative research. Through cross stories, a more profound understanding of interviewees’ perspectives on the world emerges, enabling researchers, when necessary, to question common-sense meanings of certain categories and highlight gaps in biographical accounts.

Advocating for environmental law – grounds for its status as an independent branch of law in Slovak legal doctrine

Author(s): Matúš Michalovič,Michal Maslen / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

The article traces the historical development of environmental regulation in Czechoslovakia, and subsequently Slovakia, highlighting the transition from fragmented legal frameworks to comprehensive legislation, notably Act no. 17/1992 Coll. on Environment. It explores theoretical debates on whether environmental law constitutes an independent legal branch, examining criteria, such as subject matter, objectives, distinct principles, regulatory methods, and international dimensions. While advocating for environmental law’s recognition as a distinct branch, the article acknowledges ongoing debates and emphasizes the need for continued inquiry to reach consensus. Overall, it provides insights into environmental law’s evolution, challenges, and potential role within legal theory and practice.

Методологија мапирања заједнице – истраживање наслеђа еманципације Ромкиња

Author(s): Marija Đorđević,Bojana Bogdanović,Miloš Rašić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 2/2024

This paper presents the relatively new – in local framework of humanities rarely applied – method of community mapping is introduced and explored. Community mapping is a participatory research approach that focuses on the needs of social groups, that are evaluated and holistically understood in the process; and used as a ground for designing policies for the further development of community research. The main case study of the analysis is the project – “HEROINES: Heritage of Emancipation – Empowering Roma Women through Networks of Solidarity”, implemented by Institute of Ethnography SASA, Roma Women Center “Bibija” and the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade. The project is supported by the Center for the Promotion of Science (CPN). This citizen’s research project uses community mapping as its main method, with Roma women – as simultaneously marginal and marginalized in the broader society – being the main target group and the main representative of the other in their social reality.

Personal and Collective Memory Boards as an Instrument for Enhancing Community Belonging and Self-Esteem from Tribal Societies to Contemporary Ones

Personal and Collective Memory Boards as an Instrument for Enhancing Community Belonging and Self-Esteem from Tribal Societies to Contemporary Ones

Author(s): Vered LEVY UNGER,Stefan COJOCARU / Language(s): English Issue: 87/2024

This article addresses the concept of memory boards as a community working tool. Collective and personal memory boards served several tribal cultures as a visual exhibit of a tribe’s story or a totem group alongside every member’s unique contribution. They are powerful tools to strengthen community belonging and sense of their members’ self-esteem. Two tribal art objects are represented as examples of efficient memory holders for their community members: Indigenous Australian Churinga in Australia and the Lukasa memory boards of the African Luba tribe. An intervention program based on the Hero-Heroine’s Journey model, focusing on the interface between myths, personal stories, and art, took place from 2023 to 2024 among 40 participants from three third-age clubs in a central city in Israel. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with some program participants emphasizing the examined parameters. Among artistic tools, collage technique and metaphorical collage research tools were used to enable nonverbal expression among participants. This article presents an experiment where artistic tribal practices using memory artifacts inspired an efficient tool that can be used nowadays in community art projects to enhance a sense of belonging and a sense of self-esteem. It demonstrates how a modern "memory board" created using the metaphorical collage tool refers to and deepens interview data. An analysis of the metaphorical collages and interviews revealed that collages shed light on themes found in the interview. The meaning of the results and the main conclusions arising from this article are: (a) using tribal techniques, such as memory boards, as part of artistic tools and products, can change people’s sense of belonging and self-esteem and (b) we can contribute to contemporary community members’ understanding of these two parameters by continuing research about using these practical tools.

Angielski przekład „Wojny polsko-ruskiej pod flagą biało-czerwoną” w perspektywie teorii postkolonialnej

Author(s): Mira Czarnecka / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2024

The article is devoted to the analysis of the English translation of Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną [Snow White and Russian Red] by Dorota Masłowska, published in Poland in 2002. The inquiry is situated in the context of the postcolonial theory of translation and is conducted from the perspective of the receiving culture. The research reveals that Benjamin Paloff, in the process of translation, favoured domestication over foreignization strategy, which caused partial obliteration of the source culture in the translated text.
