(How) Can Machine Learning Support Teaching Staff in a Virtual Collaborative Learning Environment?

Author(s): Arne Böhmer,Hannes Schubert,Maximilian Musch,Sebastian Schmidt / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Purpose: Supervising roles within virtual collaborative learning (VCL) environments face many different challenges and are often having difficulties keeping an eye on everything and comprehending every participant’s or group’s workflow. To help supervisors with problems like that we developed a software prototype to support their daily workflow and overcome the mentioned challenges. Study design/methodology/approach: This study used a design science research approach to investigate how learning analytics might be able to support teaching staff in VCL settings. Previous studies demonstrated that this approach is very well suited to derive design guidelines for such software artifacts. Initially, a qualitative interview series with four experienced tutors was carried out to get an in-depth understanding of the challenges and tasks teaching staff typically faces in VCL environments. The interview material was systematically analysed to acquire the underlying software requirements. These were then combined with existing knowledge about support software of similar use cases to create a first prototype, primarily based on a supervised machine learning model that classifies online messages sent within the teams. Findings: The software tool we have developed has shown that machine learning processes can indeed be used to support teaching staff in VCL environments. The tool achieves satisfactory classification performance in categorizing chat messages. It could therefore be demonstrated that it is possible to classify chat messages using a software tool. The interviews conducted revealed a particular interest in the statistical evaluations of group activities in Microsoft Teams. This was said to save a lot of time in the subsequent evaluation of the groups. The interviewed eTutors also expressed an interest in receiving private information on the development of possible conflicts within groups. The interest of the interviewed supervisors was very high and additional interviews could lead to further possible feature ideas. In general, the evaluative interviews resulted in positive feedback regarding how our prototype supported eTutors during their work. Originality/value: In current times, spatially distributed and asynchronous education plays a bigger role than ever before. VCL environments are useful tools to overcome these challenges of time and space. However, unlike research on conversational agents or automated feedback systems, the focus of this work is not on the communication interface between software and users or the exclusively quantitative analysis of messages. The goal is to evaluate the content of sent messages within VCL environments using the six defined categories to gain a better qualitative understanding of the teams’ collaboration and its workflow.

Challenges of University-Industry Cooperation in Albania

Author(s): Ketrina Mijo Çabiri,Ermira Qosja / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Purpose: Albanian universities have a rigid experience, especially in their effort to become competitive and respond to market demands. Today, it is a necessity for Albanian universities to become dynamic academic units, to go on an entrepreneurial path and to affect innovation in the region. This paper aims to measure the perception of university management staff regarding the challenges and barriers that appear in university-industry cooperation. It sheds light on the identification of factors that motivate the academic staff toward such cooperation Study design/methodology/approach: This paper implies a qualitative-based methodology and relies on the methods used by the ERASMUS + CBHE ‘KALCEA’ project. Questionnaires used on KALCEA Project collect data from universities, businesses and research centres. The questionnaires pose a set of standard questions as well as a set of tailored questions for each of the three categories. The high management staff of universities completed the questionnaire in June-July 2022. From 39 universities and higher education colleges established in Albania, the questionnaire was sent to 22 institutions and received answers from 16. Respondents are positions of rector/vice-rector/dean. Findings: One of the significant challenges of the current high education system is demonstrating the capacity to adapt to societal changes and its emerging economic demands. Nowadays, in higher education institutions in Albania, the biggest challenges are internationalisation, connection with industry, commercialisation of knowledge and academic entrepreneurship. Originality/value: Findings of the paper have interest for universities, industry, and politicians in Albania. They go in line and add value to the new Albanian law on HEIs (2015), which provides more autonomy to Departments and poses a challenge for them to cooperate with industry and act entrepreneurially.

The purpose of this research is to indicate pre-service primary school teachers’ competence related to science and pseudoscience distinction and to determine whether it differs in terms of gender and class level variables. In this research, the scanning model, one of the quantitative research models was utilized. The sampling of the research consisted of 230 pre-service primary teachers enrolled at the department of Primary Education in the Faculty of Education at a state university in the Black Sea region of Turkey in 2019-2020 academic year. “The Science-Pseudoscience Distinction Scale”, which was adapted to Turkish by Kirman Çetinkaya, Laçin Şimşek, and Çalışkan was utilized to gather data. Because data were not normally distributed, they were analyzed in terms of both sub-dimension and overall scale by using Mann Whitney U Test for the comparisons of a different group and the Kruskal Wallis H Test for more than two groups. According to the findings of the research, it was detected that pre-service primary teachers had a high level of competence in making a distinction between science and pseudoscience. There was a significant difference in favor of men between pre-service primary teachers’ gender variable and science-pseudoscience distinction. Besides, there was a significant difference in favor of the 2nd grades between pre-service primary teachers’ class level variable and science-pseudoscience distinction. Especially, 2nd grades in the making a distinction between science and pseudoscience had higher averages than the other grade levels.

Relationship Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: A Systematic Review

Author(s): Melis Mısırlı,Gamze Karadayı Kaynak / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2023

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a disorder characterized by obsessions and compulsions and negatively affects the functionality of individuals. OCD symptoms with romantic relationship content have been investigated in the literature for the last 10 years. OCD symptoms with romantic relationship content are divided into two types: relationship-centered and partner-focused. The aim of this systematic review was to examine the relationship between OCD symptoms with romantic relationship content and individual and relational variables. Studies in the literature were reviewed in detail in order to evaluate the results regarding the relationship between OCD symptoms in romantic relationships and individual and relational factors. In the national and international literature, no systematic review study on this subject was found. Accordingly, studies published between 2012 and 2022 in internationally accepted electronic databases using the terms "relationship obsessive compulsive disorder", "relationship centered obsessive compulsive symptoms" and "partner focused obsessive compulsive symptoms" were reviewed. As a result of the search, according to the inclusion criteria, 12 empirical studies on the relationship between OCD in romantic relationships and individual and relational variables with full-text access and written in English were analyzed. The methodological characteristics and results of the 12 included studies are presented in this systematic review study. The results of the studies suggest that symptoms related to romantic relationships negatively affect the functioning of individuals similar to OCD. When the variables associated with obsessive-compulsive symptoms in romantic relationships are analyzed in individual and relational context, they are related to many factors such as psychopathologies, attachment styles, self and relationship satisfaction. In this context, there is a need for empirical studies carried out with clinical samples, exploring the effectiveness of psychotherapy and cross-cultural studies on obsessive-compulsive symptoms related to romantic relationships.

An Analysis of the Movie “Hachiko: A Dog’s Story” in Terms of Empathy and Solidarity with Animals

Author(s): Nur Okutan / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2023

The aim of this study was to analyze the movie "Hachiko: A Dog's Story" in terms of empathy and solidarity with animals. For this purpose, the scenes in the movie were interpreted on the basis of empathic reactions towards animals (cognitive and affective; self/other-oriented) and solidarity with animals (emotions and behaviors such as attachment, belonging, intimacy, and cooperation). The movie is about the attachment between a dog and a human, and it encourages the viewers to understand this attachment. In order for this to happen, audiences should be able to empathize with the protagonist of the movie, Hachi. Through the analysis of the movie, it becomes clear that empathy with animals is depicted in scenes where efforts are made to understand the protagonist's fear, joy, or expectations (self/other-oriented cognitive empathic responses) as well as in scenes where the desire to do something for the protagonist is shown (other-oriented emotional empathic responses). Solidarity with animals is depicted in scenes that include emotions and behaviors such as sharing (time, happiness, sorrow, “bread”), support (helping, assuming care, etc.), and intimacy (desire to be together). Additionally, the movie directs viewers towards a dog's emotions such as joy, loyalty, sorrow, separation, and longing in many scenes.

Author(s): Lyubomir Donchev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 58/2023

This article is a close observation of a few conspiracy theories, which became popular in the last few years, mostly because of the two major events – COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine. In addition to the analytical approach towards these theories, I try to fi nd out how they are used by the Russian Federation in the field of the ongoing hybrid war. The conspiracy theories, which I observe here, bears a qualitative change and mutates in propaganda narrative. The qualitative variation can be found in the mixed mode of use of conspiracy theories as propaganda. I pay special attention to the conspiracy theory which includes 5G and its eff ect on both COVID-19 and the motivations of Putin’s war. Another important part of this study is the correspondence between the conspiracy reason and the way it helps spread and upgrade the propaganda narrative. ThIs effect is boosted by new media tools of our digital era.

E-Tutor Tandems in a COIL Course – Design, Implementation and Evaluation

Author(s): Lisa-Mari Langesee,Nelli Ukhova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Research on digital collaboration scenarios in Higher Education (HE) is characterized by various approaches that often define the acquisition and development of global skills as learning goals. Virtual Collaborative Learning (VCL) in HE represents one approach to facilitating students’ global skills. Depending on the use case, these learning arrangements can include case study-based group learning under e-tutorial supervision. This paper focuses on the perspective of e-tutors – specially qualified student assistants – and their competence development during the summer semester of 2022. Based on previous research findings, a tandem setting was chosen for their competence development. This paper mainly compares expectations and experiences regarding the competence improvement of e-tutors in a multinational tandem. These expectations and experiences were queried through two quantitative questionnaires utilizing 5-point Likert scales and one short follow-up questionnaire after the finalization of VCL. In general, the positive expectations of the e-tutors were fulfilled, but not to a similar extent for each competence category. Especially the development of social and pedagogical competencies was positive, whereas the development of intercultural competencies was challenging. Several recommendations for action were derived, which impact further e-tutor training.

Effects of Family Socioeconomic Status and Educational Resources on Children’s Cognitive Ability Performance Based on Preschool Education Perspectives

Effects of Family Socioeconomic Status and Educational Resources on Children’s Cognitive Ability Performance Based on Preschool Education Perspectives

Author(s): Qianqian SHEN,Peihua TSAI / Language(s): English Issue: 82/2023

Under the effects of rapid changes in current social environment and family, family structure gradually changes from past extended family and stem family to nuclear family for matching modern social environment. Preschool children’s learning is affected by school education as well as family education. When different family socioeconomic status would affect children’s cognitive ability to form the stratification of cognitive ability development, such a phenomenon is growing apart from the philosophy of equality of educational opportunity. Aiming at parents of children in preschool education units in china, as the research objects, total 360 copies of questionnaire are distributed, and 237 valid copies are retrieved, with the retrieval rate 66%. The research results are summarized as below. 1. Children with higher family socioeconomic status present better cognitive ability, explaining the actual effect of family socioeconomic status on current children’s cognitive ability to form educational stratification as well as unequal opportunity for preschool education. 2. The higher family socioeconomic status shows the richer family educational resources. It is therefore inferred that children with higher family socioeconomic status reveal better cognitive ability, possibly because of richer family educational resources allowing children receiving more cultural, social, or financial capital stimulation to enhance more cognitive ability. According to the result to proposed suggestions, it is expected to enhance domestic ideal of equality of preschool educational opportunity, allow domestic education parallel to various advanced countries, and achieve the responsibility for cultivating quality citizen in the future.

MAKING INDIGENOUS RELIGION AT THE SAN FRANCISCO PEAKS: Navajo Discourses and Strategies of Familiarization

MAKING INDIGENOUS RELIGION AT THE SAN FRANCISCO PEAKS: Navajo Discourses and Strategies of Familiarization

Author(s): Seth Schermerhorn / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Navajo claims pertaining to the sacredness of the San Francisco Peaks (as well as those of other Native American tribes), while no doubt profoundly sincere, are necessarily and strategically positioned in relation to the contemporary legal struggles within which they have arisen. However, I cannot stress too heavily that this should not suggest that their claims are spurious, invented, or in other words “inauthentic.” Greg Johnson asserts that “frequently, the specter against which authenticity is measured is what critics might call ‘postured tradition,’ a shorthand means of suggesting that tradition expressed in political contexts is ‘merely political’” (2007: 3). To be sure, the discourses that posit the sacredness of the Peaks are fundamentally and simultaneously both religious and political; yet this does not necessarily mean that traditional religious claims made in contemporary political contexts are motivated by purely political considerations. Although these claims are necessarily formulated to persuade others of the incontestable ‘authenticity’ of their claims, I suggest that the degree to which this incontestability is achieved is directly related to an accumulation and accretion of discourse resulting from nearly four decades of continuing conflict at the Peaks. For the purposes of this article, I have primarily limited my inquiry to the claims of only one of five tribes engaged in the litigation concerning the San Francisco Peaks between 2005 and 2009: the Navajos. Moreover, they are only one of at least thirteen Native American tribes to describe the Peaks as sacred. My limited focus is not intended to suggest that the claims of these other tribes are less important, or especially less ‘authentic.’ Rather, the only compelling reason that I do not provide a full analysis of every tribe’s claims regarding the sacredness of the Peaks is the limitation of space in this project.

Disciplinary self-reflection in Serbian sociology: findings of an in-depth interview

Disciplinary self-reflection in Serbian sociology: findings of an in-depth interview

Author(s): Ana S. Vuković / Language(s): English,Serbian Issue: 3/2023

This paper is based on the data from the author’s interviews with our sociologists of different generations and places of employment. In the qualitative research, the following questions, among others, were analyzed: 1. whether sociology is in crisis; 2. theoretical and methodological pluralism in sociology; 3. the sociologist’s potential (sociological approach, sociologist’s imagination) to investigate the problems of contemporary society. Based on the analysis of the answers, the following items were considered: 1. the social position of sociology as a scientific and research discipline; 2. the potential and applicability of sociological knowledge to the problems faced by the sociological profession itself. The author concludes that, according to our sociologists, sociology in Serbia cannot boast of any particular epistemological successes in the field of researching global structures and understanding the world-historical processes in which Serbian society finds itself, but that its potential for research is considerable and that, as a first step, it is necessary for sociology to return to the study of social structure, i.e., society in totality, as its main epistemological task.
