Етическото рационализиране на всекидневието: върху отношението между религиозен и всекидневен хабитус

Author(s): Kolyo Koev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3-4/2015

This paper offers a reconstruction of the practical logic on which the process of ‘ethical rationalization of everyday life’ is based, displaying a Weberian category which usually remains in shadow: category ‘habitus’. The ethical rationalization is treated as consequent systematic actions for transformation of the world (everydayness), motivated by a transcendent value core (extra-everydayness), which, instead of simply being an obligation, imposed from without, energizes ‘from within’ the actions in the world (everydayness) due to its embodiment into a specific this-worldly ‘habitus’, interpreted as ‘certitudo salutis’ (extraeverydayness). Thus the ethical rationalization of everyday life is seen as presupposing an incessant tension but also continuous interplay, rather than a rigid differentiation, between everyday and extraeveryday in the habitus, developed by the participants. The motive of ethical rationalization is also taken as an occasion for discussing some points of intersection between Bourdieu’s and Weber’s notion of habitus, which eventually reveal a deepseated discrepancy between the theoretical sensibilities of both thinkers.

Образ на света и отношение към света – понятията карма и бхакти във Веберовата студия „Хиндуизъм и будизъм“

Author(s): Martin Fuchs / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3-4/2015

Based on suggestions for a self-reflexive approach to translation in the social sciences, the article discusses Weber’s understanding and representation of Indic religions and Indian civilisation as articulated in particular in volume 2 of his Gesammelte Aufsätze zur Religionssoziologie (Collected Essays in the Sociology of Religion). After a brief discussion of Weber’s sociology, and incipient typology, of social actors’ relations to the world (Weltbeziehungen), as he sees them enshrined in the so-called “world religions”, and of his concept of rationalization the article turns to Weber’s interpretation of Hinduism. Two aspects are picked up for closer examination: Weber’s interpretation of the concept of karman and his portrayal of bhakti religiosity. The article criticizes the self-set limits and the distortions in Weber’s interpretation of these major elements of Indian social and religious history. It concludes with the observation that any attempt to make productive use of Weber’s sociology of social actors’ relations to the world and of his comparative theory of civilization would have to first address the ambivalences and unresolved questions of Weber’s approach as exhibited by his representation of the religions of India.

Ideologija i njen odnos sa kulturom u radu Stjuarta Hola

Author(s): Milan A. Urošević / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 3/2019

The main subject of this paper is Halls understanding of ideology. In order to explain this we will first elaborate his theoretical position and hisunderstanding of society as a complex totality of interconnected elements. In this part we will also show how Hall explains the relationship of culture to other elements of the social totality. His understanding of ideology will be divided into two sections: (1) the elaboration of its internal mechanism of operation and (2 )the elaboration of its effects. In the first part we will explain the relationship ofculture and ideology in his theory. Afterwards we will show some criticism of Halls understanding of ideology as well as some of the solutions to them that Hallprovides. In the end we will point to the epistemological problem of the relationship of his theory to the criteria of scientific objectivity as a contradiction that he doesn’tmanage to solve.

“To America!” Polish Sociologists in the United States after 1956 and the Development of Empirical Sociology in Poland

Author(s): Antoni Sułek / Language(s): English Issue: 03/2010

America was an attractive destination for European scholars and social scientists—their contacts, observations, experiences, and thoughts often became a subject of interest in itself to many other sociologists. Poles are no exception. Florian Znaniecki and William I. Thomas and their classic Polish Peasant in Europe and America, first published in 1918–20, is symbolic of contacts and influences between Polish and American sociology in the first half of the twentieth century. However, sociologists other than Znaniecki and their transatlantic journeys remain somehow in the shadows to this day. This article presents a more recent and yet less known chapter of Polish–American relations—Polish sociologists visiting American universities in the 1950s and 1960s.

Social Perspective for Family Functions in Society

Social Perspective for Family Functions in Society

Author(s): Tijen ZEYBEK,Fevzi Kasap / Language(s): English Issue: 71/2020

Family is a basic functional element and core of social organization and social institutionalization. Like many other social institutions, the family has undergone important alterations throughout the history of humanity, and has changed in its functions due to rapid evolution, but has not lost its place, importance and value in any society. The aim of this article is to analyse the functions of the family as a social institution from a sociological perspective and to highlight its importance in society. Thus, the functions of the family in Turkish society were tried to be determined with the information obtained from the sociological literature review. After the research four main functions were analysed: educational, social, cultural and economic function. In this study, descriptive analysis was used a research method. The results provided detailed documentation on the qualities and alterations in families. The findings showed that family’s basic functions are still considered as like the previous terms, however, there have been evolutions from a social perspective compared to the previous terms. The family profiles that were compared both at the attribute level and overall showed changes in social, educational, cultural and economical functions.

RETURN TO SYMBOLIC CAPITAL: CASE STUDY

RETURN TO SYMBOLIC CAPITAL: CASE STUDY

Author(s): Catalin-George Fedor / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

In this paper we propose to reconsider the concept of symbolic capital, as presented by Bourdieu and as it is understood today, and to present the results of a study on how social identity is being built, a study conducted on the ground in an ethnic, confessional and cultural community in a period of post-communist transition. The research is a quantitative one. The results highlight the current practical value of the symbolic capital concept, internalized and manifested differently by the different social groups belonging to the same communities. Equally, symbolic capital can be a vector of preserving local identity and the community can rely on it to shape its future.

Author(s): Viktor Volodymyrovych Kuzmin / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 1/2021

Problem setting. The development of society is constant. New technologies require the formation of skills that affect both professional and domestic activities of people. Employers seek to select employees who will be interested in their professional activities, which will contribute to the personal development of the individual and will have a positive impact on the work of the enterprise.Recent research and publications analysis. In the works of sociologists, the process of self-development of the individual, which contributes to his promotion by professional ladder, is defined as a «career». The analysis of literature sources shows that over time, the interpretation of this concept changes somewhat, acquires new approaches, but its conceptual essence, however, is not definitively defined.Paper objective. This article aims to define the conceptual meaning of the concepts of «career» and «career strategies» based on the definitions proposed by researchers from different eras.Paper main body. The analysis allowed to identify two main conceptual approaches to the concept of «career», according to which the conceptual essence of career is the individual’s desire for professional self-development, which is reflected in his professional activities, on the one hand, and on the other, life - this is a career, so the standard of living and success directly depend on the level of activity of the individual, his desire to develop.Career strategy is a model of behavior that an individual chooses during professional growth. The literature offers many variations of this definition and classification of models of career strategies, but the most complete and generalized is the classification proposed by E. Shane and the conceptual essence of the concept of «career strategy» is reduced to a conscious choice of behavior by the individual both in the professional sphere and in life in general. Sociological research shows that the model of career strategy is a direct reflection of the behavior and lifestyle of the individual in his professional activities, which affects and determines the rate of career growth. Conclusions of the research. Analysis of scientific publications and scientific works allows to characterize the term «career», in a conceptual sense, in two perspectives, the first of which is formed on the basis of definitions proposed by the classics of sociology, and characterizes it as a process of professional growth. and from another point of view, which is defined by both foreign and domestic sociologists of the twentieth century, life is a career, it is a continuous movement in a certain direction of professional and personal growth. «Career strategy», according to the generalized definitions, is a model of an individual’s behavior during his movement up the career ladder, which determines the speed of the individual’s development, the ability to succeed in his career and personal life.

A HISTORICAL OVERVIEW OF RESEARCH INTO GENDER AND LANGUAGE: FROM THE DEFICIT MODEL TO THE SOCIAL CONSTRUCTIVIST MODEL

Author(s): Jasna Mikić / Language(s): English Issue: 094-095/2020

This paper presents an overview of early research into gender and language conducted in various developed Western countries and their languages. Different models were proposed to establish the properties of the language used by men and women. A major concept in early research was the ‘woman’s language’, regarded as inferior, and subject to pejorative connotations. The presented models represent an important beginning of research on gender and language, although they are largely no longer considered current due to the many shortcomings of their theory and weak empirical support. The paper also reviews contemporary critical frameworks and offers suggestions for further research.

SOCIOLOGIJA EMILA DIRKEMA IZMEĐU UNIVERZALIZMA I SOCIOLOGIZMA

SOCIOLOGIJA EMILA DIRKEMA IZMEĐU UNIVERZALIZMA I SOCIOLOGIZMA

Author(s): Ostoja Barašin / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 45-46/2020

И. МИХАЙЛОВ

Author(s): S. A. Baturenko / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1/2021

The article considers the ideas of the Russian writer, poet and journalist M. I. Mikhailov, that became intellectual prerequisites for the formation of feminist discourse in Russian sociology of the XIX century. Domestic thinkers have contributed greatly to the emergence in Russia of feminism as a social phenomenon and the theory of feminism in the history of Russian social thought. The specifics of historical and cultural development have influenced the reflection of many issues within the social sciences, including the need to explore the “female issue” in sociology. The author shows that the problem of the position of women in society is markedly expressed in the context of Russian culture and is widely revealed in Russian literature in the works of famous writers, poets, journalists, philosophers, in particular in the works of M. Mikhailov. This article can be considered as an attempt to develop and deepen courses on the history of Russian sociology, it gives an idea of how feminist discourse was formed in classical sociology. The presentation of the problem of inequality, overcoming the dependent position of women and ensuring their rights in Russia differs from the Western specificity. This difference is reflected in the works of M. Mikhailov. The author shows significant influence on shaping the feminist discourse of European scholars, on the one hand. On the other hand, the author describes a revision and critical analysis of these ideas in the works of the Russian writer. The article analyzed Mikhailov’s creativity as one of the components of the process of spiritual and intellectual development of Russian social thought, immediately preceding the emergence of sociology in Russia and the formation of feminist discourse within some leading scientific schools.

Н.И. Кареев в чешской и словацкой истории и историографии

Н.И. Кареев в чешской и словацкой истории и историографии

Author(s): Miroslav Daniš / Language(s): Russian Issue: 6/2020

This study deals with the reflections of personality and works of N.I. Kareev in the Czech and Slovak historiography. The contemporary historical science considers N.I. Kareev to be one of the most original and most important representatives of Russian scholarship in the field of social sciences during the late 19th–early 20th centuries. His interdisciplinary and manifold scientific interest in history, sociology, philosophy of history, culturology, and methodology of science has been reflected in the Czech and Slovak humanities. In 1895, N.I. Kareev published in Czech one of his most popular works “The Letters to Studying Youth” (‘Listy studující mládeží’). The introduction to this work, directly addressed to the Czech readers, was particularly valuable. N.I. Kareev’s second work “The Introduction to Sociology” (‘Úvod do sociológie’) was translated into Czech and published in 1907. His articles and the reviews of his works were published on the pages of several Czech journals. N.I. Kareev met in person with many historians, such as Jaroslav Bidlo, Jaroslav Goll, Josef Pekař, and Ľubomír Niederle, as well as with some politicians, such as Tomáš Masaryk and Karel Kramář. His scholarly works on the history of Western Europe were based on both his research on the Austrian Empire and his good knowledge of local realia (including the Slavic ones). After 1989, the Czech and Slovak scholars – historians, philosophers, and sociologists – became increasingly focused on the academic work of N.I. Kareev.

On the Birth of Economic Science During the Italian-Scottish Enlightenment: Two Paradigms Compared

Author(s): Stefano Zamagni / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

The essay pursues a double aim. On the one hand, it offers a comparative analysis of the two main economic paradigms of the Enlightment period, i.e. the political economy one, associated with the name of Adam Smith, and thecivil economy one, associated to the name of Antonio Genovesi. On the other hand, it gives reasons why, in the last quarter of a century, the civil economy paradigm is gaining more and more grounds. The paper ends up with some considerations on the major drawbacks of libertarian individualism in the present epoch.

Socjologia II Rzeczypospolitej jako tradycja

Author(s): Antoni Sułek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2020

The sociology of the Second Polish Republic (1918–1939) is presented as a tradition – a part of the heritage that is positively evaluated and transmitted from generation to generation. The tradition of sociology in Poland dates back to the partition period; it developed in the interwar period of independence and was tested during the Second World War and subsequently in communist times. The basic elements of the tradition are identified in the article and illustrated by the life and work of leading Polish sociologists of the pre-war period.

Veberov doprinos analizi sadržaja

Veberov doprinos analizi sadržaja

Author(s): Željka Manić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 20/2020

The subject of this paper is Max Weber’s contribution to content analysis as a sociological research procedure. Content analysis gained the legitimacy of the sociological method of research in the middle of the 20th century, and Weber occupies a significant place in its history. He used the basic idea of content analysis in “The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism” (1904-1905). Weber drew conclusions about the institutionalised form of social communication in the past by studying its recorded content. He analysed the content of protestant catechisms to establish whether, in working with believers, pastors encouraged ethical attitudes conducive to the development of the capitalistic spirit. Later, at the first meeting of the German Sociological Society (1910), Weber proposed undertaking a comprehensive analysis of the content of the press, which did not receive the support of sociologists. His proposal represents the first methodologically designed attempt to give content analysis a place among sociological research procedures. The aim of this paper is to present Weber’s contribution to content analysis. His contribution is considered through an analysis of the application of the basic idea of this procedure in ‘The Protestant Ethics and the Spirit of Capitalism’ and through advocating its use in speech at the first meeting of the German Sociological Society.

Fenomenološko razumevanje M. Veberovog postulata subjektivnog tumačenja u delu A. Šica

Author(s): Snežana S. Popić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 20/2020

Max Weber, as the founder of interpretative sociology, left a significant influence on phenomenological, that is, reflective sociology. His concept of understanding (Verstehen) gained a modified role in the sociological theoretical-methodological directions that emerged during the twentieth century. Understanding is not only a methodological procedure of interpreting social reality but also a condition of its intersubjectivity as a special experiential form. Therefore, in this paper, the theoretical schemes and methodological strategies of Max Weber and Alfred Schütz are problematised with the central attention to the use of the postulate of subjective interpretation. This postulate is presented within the phenomenological sociological model, primarily in the sense of the general principle of constructing types of flow-actions, that is, the typification necessary for social harmonisation of participants in the common-sense world. Since the model of scientific constructs is based on the model of common sense constructs as first-order constructs, this postulate also gained its central place in the methodological sense, as one of three possible forms – experiential, epistemological, and methodological. In the wake of all previously analysed, the specificity of the phenomenological understanding of the concept of action is also pointed out.

Dugin’s deconstruction of postmodernity – postliberalism and postpolitics

Author(s): Srđan M. Perišić / Language(s): English,Serbian Issue: 3/2021

The paper studies Dugin’s argumentation of postmodernity. In his philosophical and politicological works (Philosophy of Politics, Postphilosophy, Fourth Political Theory and Postmodern Geopolitics) written after 2000, Dugin applies the deconstruction method to explain the postmodern paradigm which the West definitely stepped into at the end of the twentieth century. We begin with his understanding of the end of modernism and revelation of liberalism as a matrix of the emergence of the postmodern paradigm. Afterwards we study the revelation of postmodern liberalism as postliberalism. Moreover, the question is analyzed as to how postmodernization of the liberal individual into the postindividual one proceeds. In the final considerations we speak of the transformation of modern politics into postpolitics.
