Dlaczego nadal myślę o wojnie? Doświadczenie pospamięci Sachy Batthyany'ego

Dlaczego nadal myślę o wojnie? Doświadczenie pospamięci Sachy Batthyany'ego

Author(s): Justyna Nowak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 65/2020

Sacha Batthyany found out that in 1945 his aunt hosted a ball during which 180 Jews were shot by her guests. Their mass grave has not been found until today. She also helped many Nazis escape from Hungary. Sacha’s family kept these stories secret for years. For Sacha, the discovery of his family’s past becomes the beginning of a new life, recognizing the tormenting feeling of guilt as inherited from his ancestors. Can we define the sense of guilt as traumatic? We can certainly try to do it. Yet, trauma assumes different shapes and reveals its huge interpretative potential.

The importance of language in the recognition and categorisation of emotional states. The relationship between “me” and emotion in a cultural context

The importance of language in the recognition and categorisation of emotional states. The relationship between “me” and emotion in a cultural context

Author(s): Henryk Gasiul / Language(s): English Issue: Special/2021

This article concerns the analysis of the importance of language in the self-determination of one’s emotional states and his/her determination of the same in another person. In the first part of the article, the author presents difficulties related to the categorisation of emotions resulting from the use of different languages. The author goes on to prove that a broadly defined culture is of key significance for understanding emotions, with language being an indispensable dimension for naming certain emotional states. Due to the fact that emotions are specifically linked to the “subjective self ”, fundamental role should be attributed to the kind of formed mental structure that defines the character of this “subjective self ”. Collective and individualistic cultures are examples of a different formation of the structure of the “self ”. They determine the ways of experiencing emotions and the types of dominant emotional states. As the basic system of social communication, language allows these states to be given meaning, and thus explains the difference in their experiences and guides the way they are categorised.

Author(s): Oksana Tykhovska / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 3/2020

The aim of the article is an analysis of folk beliefs of Ukrainians of Transcarpathia which deal with magic features of plant at Kupala night and studying their ethno-psychological basis. The specifics of the theme predisposed application of comprehensive approach to the research methodologies, among which there should be mentioned such as: analytical, genetic, structural-semantic, structural-typological, comparative-historical, psycho-analytical. Scientific relevance. The objects of the research are works of Transcarpathian folklorists of the first part of XXth century such as V. Potushnyak, F. Potushnyak, I. Fedorkov, M. Scherbey. Their works were published in periodicals of those days – “Literaturna nedilya”, “Podkarpatska Rus”, “Nash rodnyi kray” “Pcholka”. Beliefs and rituals which were described in these works were not the objects of separate research and this fact predetermines the novelty of this article. The V. Shukhevych’s and P. Shekeryk-Djnykiv’s ideas about plant magic in Kupala rituals of Hutsuls were used for typological comparison. Kupala rituals and spells have been presented through the prism of ethno-psychology and psychoanalysis for the first time. Conclusions. Belief in a wonderful power of plants at Kupala night became a precondition of appearance of various types of magic rituals which had 1) to provide marriage with a beloved man (rituals with “lyptytsya”, “nimytsya”, “korolytsya” and tyrlych), 2) to heal deceases (naked bathing in dew, running around the house, tying round the shoulders with the help of grass ropes), 3) to help to assert in the society (ritual which is performed be a man with “nimytsya”), 4) to condition increasing milk yield what concerning cows, 5) to find and neutralize the actions of witches. Plant magic in Kupala rituals of Transcarpathian peasants of the first part of XXth century was connected to love magic. Early in the morning girls looked for plants which were associated with their lovers and made metaphoric transference of their love on those plants: they talked to them and behaved as if those plants were their lovers. A girl tried to influence on the plant with magic rituals which could cause appearance of a real lover. With the help of different Kupala rituals people symbolically asked plants, water or dew to support them in their desire to find betrothed, to become healthy and successful, to overcome an enemy or to be successful at household issues. In such rituals a plant was regarded not as a love object, but as half-deity which was able to help asker after a great sacrifice.

Author(s): Lyudmila Sergeevna Gotz / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 4/2020

The purpose of this article is to investigate and explicate transhumanistic cultural messages found in G. Mairink's novel "The Golem" (1914). The methodology of research within the framework of Cultural Studies consists of the use of structural-functional plot analysis, semiotic and hermeneutic analysis, axiological, and archetypal analysis (analytical psychology of C. G. Jung). The scientific novelty of this paper lies in the fact that within the framework of the humanities, in particular cultural studies, for the first time the analysis of the "Golem" novel is carried out in the context of the transhumanist paradigm. Also offered are the author's definitions of the concepts of "transhumanism" and "transhumanistic act". Conclusions. G. Meyrink‘s esoteric transhumanism insists on the need to overcome the "golemic", that is, the "incompleteness", the original imperfection of man, and reach self deification.

INTERSUBJECTIVITY AND EMBODIMENT IN THE FIELD OF PSYCHOTHERAPY

INTERSUBJECTIVITY AND EMBODIMENT IN THE FIELD OF PSYCHOTHERAPY

Author(s): Kata Dóra Kiss / Language(s): English Issue: 2 Suppl./2021

Intersubjectivity is one of the most important concepts of the phenomenological school of thought. The approach assumes that our being in the world is based on relations with Others. The idea has a central role not only in the philosophy of perception but in psy-sciences as well. Mostly all branches of psychology agree that the self is constituted by its relations. However, there is much less consensus on how decisive these relations are. Therefore, the question of intersubjectivity has become the question of how we perceive human beings: as biological or social entities. Psy-sciences have never had one coherent and consensual paradigm, although nowadays the natural scientific standards are the most prevailing in the field, which prioritizes biological explanations over socio-cultural aspects. The study attempts to connect the phenomenological approach to intersubjectivity to the psychological approach to embodiment. For this, first, it elaborates on an essential problem of psy-sciences, transmitted by classical philosophy, namely the mind-body dualism, which implicitly establishes the current paradigm. Then, it aims to describe how the phenomenological approach, especially the philosophy of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, could dissolve the classical dualism through the assumption of the body-mind-world unity. Merleau-Ponty was one of those thinkers of the 20th century who laid down the foundations of the scientific paradigm of embodiment. Afterward, I illustrate the phenomenological concept above through Ben Rumble’s psychological approach, which applies the embodiment paradigm for the therapeutic process as a professional. The final part of the study attempts to establish a relation between the psychological attitude based on embodiment and the psychoanalytic theory of Sándor Ferenczi, the Hungarian psychoanalyst.

Spolno i jezično u opusu Adriane Cavarero: onkraj jednakosti i različitosti

Author(s): Astrid Kovačević / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 03/163/2021

The paper examines the relationship between the sexual and linguistic and their mutual influence within the fields of political philosophy, linguistics, and theory of text, in selection from Adriana Cavarero’s work. First, we begin from the knowledge of poststructuralist text theory, psychoanalytic feminism and psycholinguistics, which are later expanded with the results from political philosophy with special emphasis on ancient texts. Cavarero’s texts are being analysed to describe the features through which the relationship between gender, sex and text is established. Through a critical exploration of Cavarero’s texts and previous theoretical discussions and the analysis results, a conclusion about the influence of the sexual on language and culture and the influence of language and cultural symbols on social and gender roles is reached.

Obcy Albert Camus?

Author(s): Izabela Bryja / Language(s): Polish Issue: 34/2019

The author makes a comparative study of The Meursault Investigation by Kamel Daoud and Albert Camus’ works (especially The Stranger and The Fall) based on the literature describing the category of détournement. The theoretical basis of the notion of détournement is reconstructed from the works of Guy Debord, Jacques Derrida and Judith Butler and it becomes the basic category in the interpretation of postcolonial literature. The main aim of the article is to highlight the importance of this category as one of the strategies of postcolonial writing. The author claims that the purpose of using interception in literature is to renegotiate the structure of the canon and position of writers excluded from its structure because of economic, political and cultural conditions. In the first part of the article, the author points out the essential differentiators of détournement. She introduces the formula of the structure of the literary canon created by David Damrosch. Next she analyses two literary narrations dialoguing with each other. Comparison of the canonical story about Meursault’s murder and trial by Camus and The Meursault Investigation by Daoud reveals a strict relation between these novels. In Daoud’s story, the narration is inverted—the perspective of a victim, which is expressed by the brother of nameless Arab, dominates in the book. The analysis ends with the conclusion that détournement of a canonical work, and its recontextualization, is a more revolutionary gesture, made by postcolonial writers, who want to renegotiate their position in the structure of the canon, compared to nativist, utopian reproduction of the precolonial past. The choice of this particular strategy of writing confirms the truth of two claims of which Daoud is aware (as evidenced in novel): first, that every literary work is iterable and, second, that every revolution is only an apparent renouncement.

Žensko tijelo i trauma u romanima Milana Kundere

Žensko tijelo i trauma u romanima Milana Kundere

Author(s): Medina Garić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 83-84/2021

The article examines the representation of female bodies in three novels by Milan Kundera: The Joke, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, and The Book of Laughter and Forgetting. Besides exploring the ways in which female bodies are represented, the article focuses on traumatic experiences that shape the female characters’ relationship to their own bodies. Since the traumatic experiences are mostly related to male characters, the aim of the article is to point out that women most often perceive their own body through a man’s perspective. The article also seeks to explain how Kundera’s male characters’ personality becomes formed and shaped by the bodies of his heroines. In that sense, Kundera’s male heroes treat female bodies mainly as objects onto which they project their own desires and fantasies. Drawing on feminist approaches to literature, the article emphasises and points to the “burden” of the body in Kundera’s female characters.

Sličan se sličnom raduje ili se suprotnosti privlače

Sličan se sličnom raduje ili se suprotnosti privlače

Author(s): Anđela Keljanović / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 1/2021

Despite the time when the body-positive concept challenges the ways in which the media and society present the image of the “ideal body”, one gets the impression that the most valuable trait is physical appearance. Those who dictate today’s standards are physically attractive, attractive, popular, and thus more desirable as potential partners. People, regardless of their own attractiveness, tend to choose attractive partners. However, the matching hypothesis assumes that individuals choose partners with a similar level of attraction. In this review, we will see if choosing a partner from the “same league” increases our chances of a successful outcome. One of the conclusions of the initial research of the matching hypothesis is that pure physical attractiveness is the most important determinant of likeability. Although, we know of couples who are not equally physically attractive, and even then, one’s social desirability other than physical attractiveness can be offset by personability and material status. The tendency to prefer highly attractive partners weakens when moderating factors are present that include the low availability of attractive potential partners in the general population and predict the possibility of rejection. The matching hypothesis has not been empirically confirmed and many aspects have not been tested. Therefore, we present a new theory based on the assumption that there is a difference in the extent to which a gender values physical attractiveness, implying that men can easily compensate for the deficit in physical attractiveness with other desirable characteristics such as high socioeconomic status. Although it is basically designed to explain and predict different patterns of behavior when choosing a partner, it is possible to generalize to other dimensions of desirability.

Czapajew w krainie archetypów (psychologia Junga we wczesnych powieściach Wiktora Pielewina)

Czapajew w krainie archetypów (psychologia Junga we wczesnych powieściach Wiktora Pielewina)

Author(s): Łukasz Bachora / Language(s): Polish Issue: 173/2021

In the article author makes an attempt to look at the early novels of Victor Pelevin through the prism of Carl Gustav Jung’s analytical psychology. Such approach is justified by the intra-textual signals included by the writer in his work, as is shown in the article on the example of the novel Chapayev and Pustota (1996, published in the US under the title Buddha’s Little Finger and in the UK as Clay Machine Gun). Subsequently, other early works by Pelevin — from his debut novel Omon Ra (1992) up to and including Empire V (2006), with particular emphasis on Generation P (1999) — were subjected to analysis, from which a conclusion was drawn, that when analysed from the analytical psychology’s perspective, the process of individuation — one of the most important points in Jung’s theory — appears to be the main theme of Pelevin’s early work.

EDYPALNY CHARAKTER RELACJI POMIĘDZY RELIGIAMI ABRAHAMOWYMI

EDYPALNY CHARAKTER RELACJI POMIĘDZY RELIGIAMI ABRAHAMOWYMI

Author(s): Mirosław Patalon / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2021

The basic research problem presented in the article is expressed by the question about the cause of the tension between Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and about the importance of this fact for social life. It is shown here on the example of the tension between Christianity and Judaism, limiting the analysis of the discourse to selected fragments of the New Testament. On the theoretical level, the psychoanalytical tradition as perceived by Jacques Lacan and Paul Ricoeur was referred to. In the conclusions of the study it was found that the development of monotheistic religions follows the Oedipal structure. The originators of new salvation scenarios unconsciously enter into the form of their predecessors, becoming their embodiment.

What if the Black Dog Turns Out to be a Ginger Poodle? Winston Churchill and depression

What if the Black Dog Turns Out to be a Ginger Poodle? Winston Churchill and depression

Author(s): Katarzyna Szmigiero,Dorota Gonigroszek / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

The aim of this article is to analyse historical documents and biographical accounts relating to the clinical depression from which Winston Churchill, according to some sources, allegedly suffered all his life. He nicknamed his low moods “a black dog” and the phrase has become widely accepted in the English-speaking world as a personification of depression. We argue that there is scant solid evidence to prove Churchill was indeed mentally ill, even for a short period of time. He has been deliberately chosen to act as an anti-stigma icon due to his immense popularity and indisputable achievements. In an attempt to fight prejudice and lift the shame accompanying the illness, especially among males diagnosed with the disorder, Churchill’s biography has become falsified while his portrayals in film and fiction are often innacurate.

Desire And Decadence In The Film Bildnis Einer Trinkerin (1979) As An Aesthetic Modernist Reaction

Desire And Decadence In The Film Bildnis Einer Trinkerin (1979) As An Aesthetic Modernist Reaction

Author(s): Onur Keşaplı / Language(s): English Issue: Sp. Iss./2021

Aesthetic modernism parts from modernization which is characterised by westernization and progress. Aesthetic modernism, which prefers stability over improvement, primitivity over contemporary, imagination over mind, play over work and subconscious over consciousness is, with the enforcement of modern process, the other modern choice alongside the dominant version of modernization. It is difficult to say that the aesthetic modernism, which is interpreted as the stakeholder theme of 19th century romanticism and 20th century avant-garde, is treated sufficiently cinema. In spite of this, the filmography of Ulrike Ottinger as a feminist and surrealist director, provides a spectrum through which viewing of aesthetic modernism in cinema is possible). Bildnis Einer Trinkerin, which the director shot in 1979 while in pursuit of visual pleasure in the company of satire and fantasy, conveys the arrival of a woman in Berlin with one-way ticket and no other motivation than to get drunk and how she realizes her desire. The obscurity of the past and future of the main character provides an absolute focus to the actions and appearances that takes place in films timeline. The character who does not speak throughout the film becomes a feminine dandy with her costume repertoire and a flâneuse with her movements that knows no limit. Through the behaviours of the main character who, together with the side characters almost becomes part of a travelling circus, the film assumes an identification as an aesthetic modernist reaction. In regards to how the film achieves this, within the scope of conceptual frame, desire and decadence comes to the fore. Desire, which is determinant with regards to triggering of the absurdity in the film, is in harmony with productivity and sociability that Deleuze and Guattari incorporated while conceptualizing the term. Whereas the outcomes of the act of drinking of the main character point to decadence. Decadence, which includes the denotations of addiction and downfall is in harmony with Paglia’s conceptualization of the term within the axis of art and sexuality. Aesthetic modernism’s opposition to bourgeois and capitalism, which are the common ground of desire and decadence, bestows the film with an exceptional importance.

Sinemada Cinsiyetçi Ötekileştirmeye Ableism Penceresinden Bakmak: Zeki Demirkubuz Sinemasında Ableist Temsil

Author(s): Elif Karakoç,Şafak Tanır Levendeli / Language(s): Turkish Issue: Sp. Iss./2021

As a form of marginalization that adopts bodily completeness, ableism defines individuals at two extremes as “complete” and “incomplete”. The concept of ableism, which first appears in the disability studies terminology in the historical path, has a much more encompassing meaning in the context of marginalizing practices. In psychoanalytic theory, which sees the phallus identified with men as the expression of completeness, it is thought that it is possible to relate the understanding that characterizes women as “incomplete” and the ableism. From this point of view, it is possible to evaluate ableism as a reflection of a phallus-based search for completeness. The phallic-centric, or phallonsentric attitudes of the male dominant view reveal the ability as a form of marginalization that characterizes women as “incomplete” in many different fields and thus reproduces gendered stereotypes. In the study, it is stated that the social acceptance of women in the cinema makes the dualistic way of thinking inherent to traditional Western philosophy and the abilityism visible in relation to the unconscious processes that continue the phallus-based search for completeness. The metaphor of “completeness-imperfection” mentioned in the study was examined in the light of the phenomena of phallus theory in psychoanalysis and traditional Western philosophy. Zeki Demirkubuz’s films Innocence, Kader and Ember were chosen as samples in this study, based on the idea that the view towards women reflected in the cinema has a male-dominated feature. Within the scope of the study, focusing on Demirkubuz films, it is aimed to make sense of the dualist structure, which builds the social identity of women on the perception of “lack” and the men’s one on the perception of “completeness” and is processed with a ableist attitude, together with a phallocentric understanding.

Dark Matter. An Ecopsychological Approach to the Ontology of Plant Expression in Charlie Kaufman’s Adaptation and Richard Linklater’s a Scanner Darkly

Author(s): David M. J. Carruthers / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

Taking up Michael Marder’s “object of psychoanalysis, wherein we might detect a vegetal approach to the psyche,” and Timothy Morton’s dark ecology, which traces the twisted loops of agrilogistics, this article proposes an ecopsychological approach to the expression of plant soul as the very constitution of human subjectivity. Examining Richard Linklater’s adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s A Scanner Darkly, which demonstrates the pretty blue Mors ontologica’s insidious plant agency to cleave the somatic human spirit, and Charlie Kaufman’s Adaptation, wherein cinematic plant-thinking demands temporal distortions that render the human uncanny, this article positions the plant as the primary mover, the animating force and manifestation of human desire and its expression.

Eros and Thanatos in Ileana Mălăncioiu’s Poetry

Eros and Thanatos in Ileana Mălăncioiu’s Poetry

Author(s): Iulian Boldea / Language(s): English Issue: 19/2015

The Eros represents a privileged theme of the lyrical universe of Ileana Mălăncioiu. The poet wishes to designate, in her verses, that area of indefiniteness and delicateness in which the feeling of love is born, an area in which self-dedication conjugates with the desire of completion of being, introspection is completed by propensity towards others, withdrawal into oneself calls for the supple, sympathetic agreement with the lowed one. The feeling of love is rather a promise of communion, an utopian brace, a temptation of completeness by Eros, than self-fruition of the moment of love. Love and death are themes which contaminate each other, in a romantic tradition; Eros gains reflexes of Thanatos, while living encloses uncertain spaces, with a fluctuant geography of dream and affective solitude. Life and death, for that matter, appear to be not so irreconcilable realities, on the contrary, the spaces they occupy overlap. In a world of alienation, of dismantled meanings and progressive reification, even the feeling of death seems to be more tolerable, entering almost within the limits of natural.

Opravdanost Frojdove psihoanalitičke paradigme u tumačenju romana Nečista krv Borisava Stankovića

Author(s): Jovana M. Kopanja / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 2/2020

Although psychoanalytic learning as a scientific paradigm has become increasingly undervalued in recent decades, it still has a very important place in the science of literature. Borisav Stankovic‘s most famous novel Nečista krv is based on Zola‘s theory of family degeneration and the naturalistic account of the demise of the Hadži-Trifun lineage, as well as Freud‘s teaching on the conception of personality, hence the inevitable starting point for the analysis of this work. The paper will not question whether Stanković read Freud, but will highlight the benefits of Freud‘s psychoanalytic paradigm in interpreting the novel over other approaches to interpretation and look at those authors who based the analysis of Nečista krv on psychoanalytic learning. The aim of the work is to isolate parts of the novel that will be interpreted in the key of psychoanalytic phenomena such as: the problem of the boundary between erotic and pornographic, the struggle of eros and tanatos, the phenomenon of incest, which is brought about in connection with the custom of “snobbery” in the Pčina region of Serbia, as well as autoeroticism, the most complex erotic phenomenon in the novel.
