Understanding Organisational Adaptation

Understanding Organisational Adaptation

Author(s): James G. March / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2003

Recent enthusiasms have emphasised particularly ideas of “learning organisations”, calling attention both to the ways organisations learn and to the possibilities for improving organisational intelligence through increasing the rate and precision of learning. These enthusiasms have often encouraged the too easy assumption that learning processes necessarily lead to organisational improvement. The usefulness of learning as an instrument of organisational intelligence has to be demonstrated, not assumed. Adaptive processes such as learning are not guaranteed to reach or sustain a global maximum on an outcome surface. In order for proposals for “learning organisations” to be more than vague wishes for improvement, learning must be defined in terms of some specific process and the conditions under which that process does or does not lead to improvement must be established. This essay is built around six simple propositions, a kind of catechism for consideration of learning as an instrument of intelligence.

Does the Context Matter? Labour Market Characteristics and Job Satisfaction Among Young European Adults Working on Temporary Contracts

Author(s): Jędrzej Stasiowski,Małgorzata Kłobuszewska / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2018

The main goal of this study is to gain a better understanding of the relationship between job satisfaction and temporary work among youth in the EU, while considering the role of the context of countries’ labour market characteristics. To address this issue, we use the EU-SILC 2013 database, with an ad hoc module on well-being, which we supplement with macro indicators from Eurostat and ILO. Our findings show that a higher unemployment rate is associated with a lower job satisfaction among youth. Moreover, country-level variables moderate the negative impact of temporary work on the level of job satisfaction among young workers. The negative effect of temporary work is stronger in countries with a higher unemployment rate and a lower level of unionisation.

COMPARING MANAGERIAL LEADERSHIP IN KNOWLEDGE INTENSIVE CONTEXT: HOW LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND STYLES DIFFERS AMONG ORGANIZATIONAL LEVELS?

Author(s): Mustafa Doruk Mutlu / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2019

In today's globalized world, being innovative has become a top priority for many organizations. The knowledge-oriented sectors have started to gain much power and attention for the competing economies. Such developments give rise to new form of organizations named as “knowledge intensive firms (KIFs)” along with a new type of employee called as “knowledge worker.” Such workers use their brain power and think for a living unlike manual workers whose work is mostly based on physical tasks. Knowledge workers are generally work in knowledge intensive firms and use their theoretical and analytical skills to find creative solutions to complex problems and dealing with uncertainty of knowledge creation through new product or service development. In fact, the new knowledge and the products they create is not easy to replicate both inside and outside of organization. These workers are the most valuable assets of knowledge intensive organizations. Being expert and skillful gives knowledge workers the autonomy and control power on their job. Traditional approaches and leadership styles of managers are questioned and not welcomed in such settings. Therefore, the changing focus and the nature of these contemporary organizations unearthed new leadership styles and approaches for the executive officers. Interviews with managers and knowledge workers revealed that different managerial skills and leadership styles are favored depending on the organizational levels of managers doing leadership in knowledge intensive setting.

An integrated model of work engagement: how the satisfaction of basic psychological needs explains the relationship between personality and work engagement

An integrated model of work engagement: how the satisfaction of basic psychological needs explains the relationship between personality and work engagement

Author(s): Lenka Prokesova,Martin Vaculík,Ludmila Kasparkova,Jakub Procházka / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2019

This paper aims to broaden the understanding of work engagement antecedents. It focuseson impact of personality characteristics – positive affectivity, proactive personality, andconscientiousness on work engagement, and examines whether personality influence canbe explained by self-determination theory, i.e., the satisfaction of needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness. An online questionnaire on a sample of 783 Czech workersprovided our data. Structured equation modelling showed the influence of positive affectivityand conscientiousness on engagement can be partly explained by the satisfaction of the needfor competence. The relationship between proactive personality and engagement cannot beexplained by the satisfaction of any of the basic psychological needs. More specifically, positive affectivity predicts the satisfaction of all three needs, conscientiousness predicts onlythe satisfaction of the need for competence, and proactive personality does not predict thesatisfaction of any need. Interestingly, engagement is predicted only by the satisfaction of theneed for competence.

Author(s): Željka Radošević,Slavica Blažeka Kokorić,Maja Laklija / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 1/2019

The aim of this paper was to describe the constructive and psychometric characteristics of the questionnaire “Coping with negative workplace behaviours ” on a sample ofpolice officers and to determine whether this questionnaire is suitable for use in further research. A modified version of the scale “Coping with bullying” constructed by Lee and Brotheridge (2006) was used in this research. The research was conducted on a sample of209police officers of both genders in the Split-Dalmatia Police District. Descriptive statistics, factor analysis and Spearman coefficient was used in data analysis. The results showed that police officers in coping with negative workplace behaviours most often use the strategy of calming the situation and avoiding problems (M = 2.43, SD = 0.88), followed by active problem solving (M = 1.61, SD = 0.72) and focusing on their own emotions and relief of stress symptoms (M = 1.56, SD = 0.63). Psychometric characteristics and factor analysis showed the existence of a three-factor structure of the questionnaire with a good reliability of extracted subscales: (1) focus on own emotions and relief of stress symptoms (consisting of 10 items, Cronbach s alpha = 0.83), (2) focus on calming the situation and avoiding problems (consisting of 8 items, Cronbach s alpha = 0.84), and (3) focus on active problem solving (consisting of 5 items, Cronbach s alpha = 0.72). The results show that the proposed version of the scale is a reliable tool that can be used in future research of coping with negative behaviour in the workplace in the police profession and in the general population, which justifies further use and development of the questionnaire.

Ryzykowne zachowania młodych kierowców w świetle teorii rozmytego śladu

Author(s): Łukasz Kapica / Language(s): Polish Issue: 11/2019

The police statistics on car accidents show overrepresentation of perpetrators among young drivers group. This article presents the selected studies on this specific issue. Then above-mentioned issue is analyzed in the perspective of the cognitive processes described in the Fuzzy-Trace Theory which assumes, that there are two separate and parallel memory traces (verbatim and gist trace). It also describes the relation between these two types of traces and processes of analytical (based on verbatim) and intuitional (based on gist) decision making. Furthermore, theory assumes, that risky behaviors can be caused by the reasoning based on the verbatim trace. It also shows, that this type of reasoning dominates in youth. Therefore, Fuzzy-Trace Theory can explain the frequent risky behaviors of young drivers.

FACTORS OF JOB SATISFACTION AND THEIR EFFECTS ON EMPLOYEES’ BEHAVIOR IN A MANUFACTURING COMPANY IN THE REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA

FACTORS OF JOB SATISFACTION AND THEIR EFFECTS ON EMPLOYEES’ BEHAVIOR IN A MANUFACTURING COMPANY IN THE REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA

Author(s): Andrijana Ristovska,Ljupcho Eftimov / Language(s): English Issue: 19/2019

This paper elaborates the issue about job satisfaction, observing it through the prism of the factors that lead towards its achievement, but also observing whether its absence has an impact on the employees’ behavior in the organization, employees’ productivity, absenteeism, fluctuation, as well as customers’ behavior, satisfaction and loyalty. Based on a sample of 100 employees with different gender, educational and age structure from one of the leading manufacturing companies in the Republic of Macedonia, this research revealed which factors cause job satisfaction of the employees in the Republic of Macedonia, whether the demographic characteristics influence the differences in the ranking of these factors, as well as which conditions and processes at the workplace, the absence of job satisfaction affects significantly. We can conclude that employee job satisfaction in the country is largely determined by the factors that enable the realization of self-esteem and self-realization needs, according to the Maslow's hierarchy of needs, while the wages and the financial rewards and benefits are not ranked as the most significant factors observed at the level of all respondents. Analyzing them individually, according to gender, as well as by the level of education, which often arises as a reason for the difference in the choice of the respondents, the findings show that the financial motivators have key influence on the job satisfaction of the male employees, as well as of those with completed secondary education.
