(Re)konstruowanie własnej (nie)pełnosprawności – przemiany w sposobie percypowania siebie osoby z dysfunkcjami ciała uprawiającej sport

Author(s): Jakub Niedbalski / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 3/2018

The article is intended to analyze reconstruction of an image related to two categories of disabled persons: those physically active and passive. On the one hand, I focus on the way, which the disable individuals perceive their own situation in, considering their status as persons who practice or do not practice sport. On the other, I attempt to determine how the said individuals reconstruct their image subject to assessment by others, depending on whether they are physically active or passive. For that purpose, I make references to the disabled individuals’ opinions on their own (subjective self), and their evaluation of how they are seen by the fully capable persons (reflected self). In other words, it is confrontation of an image of physically active and passive persons with opinions and feelings experienced directly by the respondents, with their image arising from other people’s opinions.

Author(s): Sema Şimşek,Hasan Atak / Language(s): Turkish / Issue: Suppl. 1/2021

In this study, the effect of 12-18 Age Family Education Program (AEP) on family functions was examined in a quasi-experimental study. The families in the experiment and control groups of the study were selected by purposeful sampling method. Self-Assessment Scale, The Family Assessment Device (FAD) and Me as a Parent Scale (MPS) were used as pretest-posttest data collection tools. A 14-session Family Education Program was carried out in the experimental group. No study was conducted with the control group. In the experimental group, it was observed that there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the sub-scales of problem solving, parenting roles, affective responsiveness, affective involvement, controlling behaviors, and general functioning and there was no significant difference in terms of communication function. A significant difference was also found between the pretest and post-test means of self-regulation skills. As a result, it was determined that the family education program was effective on parents. In the control group, no significant difference was found between the pretest-posttest scores in the subscales of problem solving, communication, affective responsiveness, affective involvement and controlling behaviors. A significant difference was found between the pre-test and post-test scores of parenting roles and general functioning subscales. There was no significant difference between the pre-test and post-test means of the control group parents' self-regulation skills. In the control group, where training was not applied, there was no change in general.

Author(s): Berrin Koçin,Mehmet Nur Tuğluk / Language(s): Turkish / Issue: 49/2020

The aim of this study is to examine the achievements that are included in the MEB 2013 Pre-School Education Program in terms of 21st century skills and to determine the level of reference skills. Content analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. As a result of the research, it has been observed that the gains in the preschool program are mostly related to skills such as critical thinking, creativity, problem solving, communication, responsibility and awareness of different cultural characteristics. When the development areas are analyzed, it is seen that the gains related to these skills are mostly included in the field of social emotional development, followed by the language development field and the cognitive development field respectively. In addition, while these skills are very rare in the field of self-care skills, it has been determined that there are no encountered in the field of motor development. Technology and media literacy gains, which have become very important today and highlighted in 21st century skills, have not been observed. Some suggestions were made in line with the results obtained.

A Discordant Harmony – A Critical Evaluation of the Queer Theory from an Indian Perspective

Author(s): Srija Sanyal,Abhik Maiti / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2018

Queerness or rather queer sexuality in India has always been the favourite child of debate and discussions. Queer identity in India has always suffered through the dilemma of to be or not to be. As Dasgupta puts it, “Identities are complicated to begin with and become more complicated when relating them to nation and sexuality”. Given the diversity of India in terms of not only culture but ethnicity as well, Indian sexual identities are the product of “Mulipicitous effects and perceptions of tradition, modernity, colonization and globalization” (Dasgupta, 2011) that are more often in conflict with each other than in a harmonious synthesis. The main argument of this paper is to trace a lineage of queerness in India both in terms of its representation in literature by analyzing The Editor (1893) and The Housewife (1891) by Rabindranath Tagore; Lihaaf (1941) by Ismat Chugtai; and R. Raja Rao’s The Boyfriend (2003), and how it prevailed in reality or the societal perception of the same. Providing a literature review by building a bridge in between the ancient and the contemporary India, the paper attempts to trace the missing links of when and how queerness went behind the curtains only to reappear in front of a more complicated, confused and probably a more rigid audience.

A Journey Inside the Perception of the Self-Image - from the 15th Century Italian Portrait to the Glamorized Image on the Facebook

A Journey Inside the Perception of the Self-Image - from the 15th Century Italian Portrait to the Glamorized Image on the Facebook

Author(s): Marius Dumitrescu / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2021

This article aims to present the philosophical perspective upon the birth of the idea of the individual and the consequences of the discovery of the self-image on the techniques of image reproduction from the Renaissance to the present day. The process of projecting the self-image into the public space acquires a special importance with the elaboration of the portrait technique in the Italian painting of the 15th century. Through Leonardo da Vinci's paintings, this technique of reproducing self-image reaches a certain perfection. Following the evolution of this kind of projections and reproductions of the self-image, it is found that there is an obvious tendency by which the individual tends to free himself from certain patterns, or rather canons, which a certain epoch imposes. This process manifested in the visual arts corresponds to a new philosophical perception of man opened by the works of Ficino and Pico della Mirandola. The assertion of a new type of dignity, correlated with the idea of the microcosm, of the Renaissance man will lead to an affirmation of his own personality and especially to an increase of the will to power reflected more and more in the works of art. With the resurgence of the Italian renaissance, artists and philosophers experienced a decline, but found a favorable space for their development at the court of Elizabeth I, Queen of England. The art of portraiture, but also the philosophy of renaissance survives and is even more flourishing at the court of this queen. But the most important moment of this renaissance is marked by Dutch art after its liberation from Spanish rule. From this moment on, the emancipation of the individual will occur on an unimaginable scale until then. Analysing the Dutch art of portraiture from the seventeenth-century, we identify the fact that painters tried to reproduce images belonging to a wide variety of people, regardless of their social status or wealth, and, as such, the self-images began to be reproduced in a democratic manner. Finally, we will investigate the philosophical aspects that occur with this increasing process of mass reproduction of self-image, especially with the advent of photography and, in particular, digital photography, but also with the possibilities of posting images through contemporary social networks like Facebook, Twitter or TikTok. We conclude that the excesses of such a reproduction of self-image lead to new social behaviors, which were defined by Ioan Petru Culianu as ”subjective power”, i.e. that form of power experienced directly by a subject.

A multi-perspective analysis of adult learner differences in foreign language learning: Motivation, autonomous learning and self-regulation

A multi-perspective analysis of adult learner differences in foreign language learning: Motivation, autonomous learning and self-regulation

Author(s): Emese Schiller,Helga Dorner / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2020

Leaner autonomy, self-regulatory strategies and motivational factors play a significant role in learning English as a foreign language (EFL) which can, nevertheless, show considerable changes in the lifetime of learning. There are thus numerous studies that investigate the dynamic nature of these constructs by exploring possible learner differences between younger and older adult population. However, research that discusses particularities within the age group of older adult learners is scarce. Hence, this paper examined the relationship among autonomous learning, self-regulation, and learner motivation by considering older adults’ age and educational background. Results indicate that there are statistically significant differences among specific aspects of motivational and autonomy-related constructs when participants’ age was taken into account. Certain self-regulatory and autonomous learning skills showed further differences when older adults’ age and educational attainment were considered. Finally, we present practical pedagogical recommendations based on our empirical findings.

A PRUDENTIAL PERSONALIST ETHICAL APPRAISAL OF HUMAN CLONING

A PRUDENTIAL PERSONALIST ETHICAL APPRAISAL OF HUMAN CLONING

Author(s): Peter O.O. Ottuh / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2021

Numerous uncertainties are hanging over the biotechnology of human cloning which has prompted medical ethicists and religious organizations to ask questions that bordered on its ethical and religious considerations. In cloning humans, ethical and religious issues arise both in its clinical and laboratory settings hence, the morality of manipulating human genes is the foremost ethical issue among scientists and religious scholars. Therefore, this paper evaluated the human cloning technology using the personalism and prudential personalism ethical-religious models to arrive at a workable moral paradigm. To achieve this objective, the paper employed the phenomenological and critical-literary literature review methods. The paper argued that previous ethical and religious researches have not adequately employed the ‘ideal’ ethical models to appraise the morality of human cloning hence; using the personalism and prudential personalism ethical-religious models were appropriate to reveal that every human life has worth and its commodification is an aberration. The paper concluded that based on the paradigm of prudential personalist ethics, cloning humans (especially, human reproductive cloning) negates respect for human life, human dignity, and communal goods hence it should not be practiced.

Acculturation Process and Ethnic Identity of Immigrants in Germany

Acculturation Process and Ethnic Identity of Immigrants in Germany

Author(s): Liudmyla Smokova / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2015

In the present study, we discuss psychological acculturation, by which we mean the internal processes of change that immigrants experience when they come into direct contact with members of the host culture. The model we present builds on research in the areas of social and ethnic identity. Each of these perspectives is discussed in accordance with its relevance to the acculturative processes operating in immigrants. We understand ethnic identity as a dynamic state, that is determined by three components: (1) by the degree of inclusion in the group of one’s cultural origin; (2) the tendency to assimilate to the ethnic group of origin; and (3) the complementary tendency to differentiate from one’s own ethnic group. Social identity conveys belonging of the individual to different social categories and the value as well as emotional significance of this membership. We have sought to explain how the processes of social categorization, inand out-group identification and social comparison predetermine the direction of the acculturation process and hence the intercultural interaction and wellbeing of the youth from immigrant backgrounds in Germany. Results indicated that immigrants who have more identified themselves with dominant society have expressed the strong preference to integration strategies. The immigrants that had a high degree of ethnic identification have expressed the low preference to the integration as well to marginalization and assimilation. In its turn, the powerful feeling of belonging to an ethnic group and attitude towards the group promotes immigrants segregation choice.

Adaptation and Psychometric Evaluation of the Young Diagnostic Questionnaire (YDQ) for Parental Assessment of Adolescent Problematic Internet Use

Adaptation and Psychometric Evaluation of the Young Diagnostic Questionnaire (YDQ) for Parental Assessment of Adolescent Problematic Internet Use

Author(s): Lutz Wartberg,Levente Kriston,Katharina Kegel,Rainer Thomasius / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2016

The surge of problematic Internet use in adolescents is a continuously growing problem across the globe. To our knowledge, to date valid questionnaire-based measurement of problematic Internet use is possible only by self-assessment. The objective for the present study was to adapt an established instrument for a parental assessment of adolescent problematic Internet use and to evaluate the psychometric properties of this questionnaire. Methods: Data were collected from a representative German sample of 1,000 parents of adolescents aged between 12 and 17 years using a standardized questionnaire. To assess problematic Internet use, we adapted the established Young Diagnostic Questionnaire by rewording the items to survey a parental rating instead of a self-report (“Parental version of the Young Diagnostic Questionnaire,” PYDQ). Additionally, we assessed the Internet usage time, parental monitoring, family functioning, school performance of the adolescent, and parent–adolescent conflicts. We conducted a confirmatory factor analysis based on the 8 items of the PYDQ modeled as categorical indicators and one latent factor using a robust weighted least squares estimator. We also calculated a reliability coefficient, the acceptance of the instrument, and performed correlation analyses. Results: The unidimensional model showed excellent global goodness-of-fit (χ2/df = 1.65, RMSEA = 0.03, CFI = 0.99, TLI = 0.99) and satisfactory factor loadings (standardized values ranged from 0.60 to 0.77). We observed a reliability coefficient of 0.70, a good acceptance of the instrument, and the correlation analyses indicated the construct validity of the PYDQ. Discussion and conclusion: The proposed PYDQ is a suitable instrument for parental assessment of adolescent problematic Internet use.

Adli Psikiyatri Servisinde Tedavi Gören Hastalarda Çocukluk Çağı Travması ve Dissosiyatif Belirtiler

Author(s): Sevler Yildiz,Aslı Kazğan,Osman Kurt,Burcu Sırlıer Emir / Language(s): Turkish / Issue: Suppl. 1/2021

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of dissociative symptoms and the relationship between childhood traumas and clinical variables in individuals who have committed crimes and are followed up in the forensic psychiatry service. 55 patients followed in Elazig City Hospital High Security Forensic Psychiatry (YGAP) service were included in the study. A semi-structured sociodemographic data form, Childhood Trauma Scale (CTQ-28) and Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) were administered to all participants. The DES total score was 26.7±11.9 in delinquent patients with a diagnosis of mood disorder. A positive and significant correlation was found between DES amnesia, depersonalization/derealization subscores and CTQ-28 physical abuse, physical neglect, sexual abuse and minimalization subscores. According to the research findings, the frequency of having dissociative experiences is low in delinquent mood disorder patients, while it is high in other patient groups. It also suggests that it should be routinely investigated in terms of dissociative symptoms and childhood neglect-abuse in psychiatric patients who have committed crimes.

Adolescent psychosocial development in Brno: An ELSPAC Study 2005–2011

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Our longitudinal findings are in line with published research describing current adolescence as a dynamic stage of life during which an individual‟s personal participation or influence on his or her development sharply increases. This leads, amongst other things, to higher variability of developmental changes and to an erosion of some stereotypes about the psychological and social life of adolescents. The respondents of the Brno longitudinal study (ELSPAC) represent a new generation of Czech adolescents. They were born in the time of turbulent social changes when political, economic and cultural conditions were significantly changing bringing along shifts in lifestyles, social norms and values of all generations including the parents of current adolescents. It can be hypothesised this society-wide change partially moderated the traditional inter generational conflict between adolescents and adults. We can speculate that the adults, not only the adolescents, partially spent the past two decades searching for a new personal and social identity (e.g. career changes, social security decrease, increase in personal freedom and responsibility of own life course). What was appreciated in the beginning of the 1990s as new possibilities – e.g. freedom in opinions and attitudes, opportunity to attain quality education, foreign travel, opportunities for self-actualisation etc. – is perceived as commonplace by today‟s adolescents.

Adolescents‟ career plans in the context of their self-concept

Adolescents‟ career plans in the context of their self-concept

Author(s): Ivana Poledňová,Vladimír Marček,Martina Čavnická / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Vocational choice is understood as one of the developmental tasks in the adolescence period, which has been conceived broadly in scholarly literature as the entire period of transition from childhood to adulthood. In this period, young people usually intensively think about their future, set their life goals and their occupational orientation is formed. Ifthis developmental stage shall be successful, i.e. effectively transformed into the following stage, the adolescent must keep (or establish) a positive relationship to oneself and at the same time also have a prospect of perspective positive development.

ADOLESCENTSKA PROCJENA KVALITETE SAMOPOIMANJA I KVALITETE ODNOSA S RODITELJIMA S OBZIROM NA NJIHOVO ISKUSTVO PROGONSTVA I IZBJEGLIŠTVA

Author(s): Kristina Urbanc / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 53/2001

This paper presents research on quality of adolescents parents relationships, concerning their experiences of being displaced or refugeed during the war period. The sample comprised 564 high school students in the area of Zagreb and was divided into two sub-groups: students with refugee experience and students without that experience. The intention was to determine the correlation between the quality of adolescent's self-perception and the quality of relationship with his/her parents and to find out the differences between subgroups concerning quality of relationship with their parents. The results have shown that a higher quality of self-perception is correlated to a higher quality of relationship with parents. It has been also found that adolescents with refugee experiences perceived their relationships with their parents as more supportive, closer and more helpful than adolescents without refugee experience. According to obtained research results the author stresses the importance of defining and preserving protective factors on the individual and family level versus risk factors (such as war) on the community or society level.

Advances in Contemplative Social Research

Author(s): Krzysztof T. Konecki / Language(s): English

This book is unique and audacious, and fits very well with current tendencies within qualitative research. It introduces new, fresh threads to questions and concerns that are highly significant for contemporary social sciences. The formulated conclusions go beyond directly methodological issues, posing key philosophical questions to the whole project of Western sociology.Grażyna WoronieckaFrom the review of the bookDeep contemplation of the situation could be the epistemological choice for social scientists. It is a fundamentally different approach to the research, where the investigator is researching the object but also the situation of research and her-self/him-self. Contemplating is a dual way of the approaching the truth. It does not mean that the researcher is mentally divided; just the opposite, she/he wants to be complete and achieve the unity of being as a researcher-human being and an element of the situation (psycho-social and historical). Contemplating enables researchers to see how the mind works and creates the images and reports from the field – what is available for the mind and what is silent or repressed because of the dominating rhetoric of description and rhetoric of feeling?... Contemplation is not only analysis, it is also an ethical choice of stopping here and now to see the situation clearly and reporting it with the all reservations that could be the result of the mindfully-observed interaction of mind, self, and situation at one historical moment. From the Introduction

Organized workouts of aerobics might be seen as a self-development tool, as adult person’s decision to get involved into certain activity is taken consciously. One perceives such engagement being related to satisfaction of certain needs and expectations to reach the results of the systematically performed activity. The research was launched in order to reveal the motives of the females’ decision making when choosing aerobics for self-development, as well as to disclose the perceived by women impact of aerobics, considering it as a self-development tool. Half-structured interview method was applied for the research. 11 females, who attended Vilnius aerobics study, were interviewed. The data of the research were processed using qualitative content analysis, based on expert evaluation. It was established that women considered such values as family, health, carrier and happiness being the most important for them. Several universally accepted values were pointed out to be positive personal values, either already possessed or to be perfected further on by the respondents.

Albinism is an inherited condition that may cause mental challenges in individuals. The aim of this study was to investigate the psychiatric distress that individuals with albinism experienced, the level of emotional impact caused by albinism on the quality of life and self-esteem. Twenty individuals with albinism, 20 individuals with vitiligo, 20 healthy controls included to the study. Participants were administered Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Coopersmith’s Self- Esteem Inventory (CSEI), World Health Organization Questionnaire on Quality of Life: Short Form (WHOQOL-BREF). BDI, BAI scores of individuals with albinism were significantly higher. The physical health, psychological, social relationship domain scores of the individuals with albinism were significantly lower than in healthy controls. Individuals with albinism had lower scores on Environment domain scores were lower than both those with vitiligo and healthy controls. The physical health, psychological, social relationship domain scores were negatively correlated with BDI; the physical health and environment domain scores were negatively correlated with BAI scores in albinism group. The CSEI scores of individuals with albinism were significantly lower than in healthy controls. According to our findings, the higher levels of depression and anxiety, lower levels of self-esteem, and quality of life indicate psychosocial distress among the individuals with albinism. Determination of the psychosocial distress experienced by individuals with albinism will contribute in better understanding of the experience of individuals with albinism and public awareness on albinism.

An Examination of the Psychology of the Feedback Receiver: The Case of EFL Students

Author(s): Mustafa Zeki Çıraklı,Hasan Sağlamel / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2020

The shift to a constructive feedback culture requires a thorough examination of the impact of feedback practices. However, a great many studies conducted on feedback in EFL or ESL contexts focus mainly on the effectiveness of feedback practices with reference to feedback receivers’ achievement or improvement in subsequent writing practices. Thus, the psychological aspects of the feedback provision processes are not adequately investigated. In an effort to address this gap, this study attempts to elicit the perspectives of 8 EFL learners who are taking writing classes in a preparatory programme. Stimulated-recall protocols conducted for three drafts and semi-structured interviews were used to gather data, and Kohut’s terminologies with reference to his Self-Psychology were used in the interpretation of the data. The study offers some insights into our understanding of the impact of the feedback practices and helps us identify which aspects of feedback practices prove to be “self-regulating” or “traumatic.” The study offers a psychological perspective on feedback practices.

An investigation of the emotions elicited by hospital clowns in comparison to circus clowns and nursing staff

Author(s): Sarah Auerbach,Jennifer Hofmann,Tracey Platt,Willibald Ruch / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2013

The present research aims at identifying emotional states induced in observers of hospital clown interventions utilizing a list of clown-specific ratings, the 29 Clown Emotion List (CLEM-29, Auerbach et al. 2012a). Study 1 investigated whether hospital clowns elicit emotional states other than those already covered by scales representing existing models of emotional states. One hundred and nineteen adults watched videos of hospital clowns and circus clowns. After each video, they completed a general mood scale, a humour-related mood scale, the CLEM-29, and indicated the global intensity of positive and negative feelings towards each video. Results showed that emotional states elicited by hospital clowns go beyond states represented in general mood scales. Some elements of the CLEM-29 relating to humour and amusement overlapped with existing models of mood, but many other emotional qualities like “feeling connected to the clown” or feeling “appreciated” were not well represented. Some of the clown-specific ratings best predicted the positive experiences towards the videos. In Study 2, 183 adults watched 15 videos of hospital clown interventions, circus clown performances and nurse-patient interactions, and filled in the CLEM-29. Four factors emerged from a factor analysis of the ratings: amusement, transcendence, arousal, and uneasiness. Both circus and hospital clowns elicited amusement, but only the hospital clowns additionally elicited feelings of transcendence (i.e., feeling privileged and appreciated). Nurses also elicited transcendent experiences without being amusing. This research shows that prior studies underestimated emotional states elicited by hospital clowns, which go beyond a typical humour response.
