Socio-psychological factors regulating the learning motivation in foreign students

Socio-psychological factors regulating the learning motivation in foreign students

Author(s): Valeria Suslova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2019

This study examined the relationship of learning motivation in foreign students with the process of their socio-cultural adaptation and individual psychological characteristics. The concept of “learning motivation” was clarified and the factors hindering the process of forming the learning motivation in foreign students in the Ukrainian-speaking environment were analysed. It was expected that learning motivation in foreign students has its own specifics and differs from the level and dynamics of this motivation in Ukrainian students. In addition, the author examined the differences in correlations between the learning motivation, level of self-esteem, level of aspirations, acculturation strategies, and the scale of perceived discrimination among the foreign and Ukrainian students. Students of Odessa universities (40 Ukrainian host society members and 34 immigrants to Ukraine) participated in the questionnaire study. The findings revealed that the main learning motives in foreign students include intrapersonal motives and the motives for acquiring knowledge, mastering a profession and getting a diploma. International students are quite susceptible to the influence of assessments by teachers, which can be used to increase their learning motivation.

The Effect of Proprioceptive Training upon the Upper Limbs Strength on Posttraumatic Shoulder Recovery in Weightlifter Women

The Effect of Proprioceptive Training upon the Upper Limbs Strength on Posttraumatic Shoulder Recovery in Weightlifter Women

Author(s): Diana Victoria Gidu,Oana Verona Neuman,George Cosmin Muşat,Florin Voinea,Damian Petcu,Andrei Madalin Petrescu,Nicoleta Daniela Calota / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2021

This paper aims to examine the effects of proprioceptive training upon upper limbs force in the case of female weightlifters. 10 weightlifters from CSS N. Rotaru in Constanța, Romania, took part in an experiment specially designed for this purpose. The experimental group was assigned a proprioceptive training programme of 15 minutes two times per week, for a period of 20 weeks. The tests administered for the assessment of their upper limbs force were push-ups, push-ups on the Bosu ball, and dynamometry testing. Data analysis shows that no significant differences between the experimental group and the control group are visible at the initial test (p> 0.05). In the final evaluation, however, the experimental group obtained better scores than the control group in all tests. These findings indicate that the proprioceptive programme proposed has lead to the enhancement of female weightlifters’ muscular force. In conclusion, the programme is an efficient training tool that can be integrated with the sportswomen’s exercise routine.

Children’s comprehension of the verbal aspect in Serbian

Children’s comprehension of the verbal aspect in Serbian

Author(s): Maja Savić,Maša Popović,Darinka Anđelković / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

The aim of the study was to investigate how Serbian native speaking preschool children comprehend perfective and imperfective aspect in comparison to adults. After watching animated movies with complete, incomplete and unstarted actions, the participants were asked questions with a perfective or imperfective verb form and responded by pointing to the event(s) that corresponded to each question. The results converged to a clear developmental trend in understanding of aspectual forms. The data indicate that the acquisition of perfective precedes the acquisition of imperfective: 3-year-olds typically understand only the meaning of perfective; most 5-year-olds have almost adult-like understanding of both aspectual forms, while 4-year-olds are a transitional group. Our results support the viewpoint that children’s and adults’ representations of this language category differ qualitatively, and we argue that mastering of aspect semantics is a long-term process that presupposes a certain level of cognitive and pragmatic development, and lasts throughout the preschool period.

Морфологический критерий разграничения абстрактных и конкретных существительных: экспериментальный подход

Author(s): Yuliya Aleksandrovna Volskaya / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1/2021

In this paper, the problem of using a morphological criterion for distinguishing between abstract nouns and other lexico-grammatical categories of the Russian language was studied. The experimental data were obtained as part of the work on compiling an electronic semantic dictionary of Russian abstract nouns with the help of the methodology used to create a similar dictionary for the English language. To date, the dictionary has had 1000 entries, each provided with the abstractness/concreteness index number. During the study, the nouns with the highest degree of abstractness (from 3.5 to 5) were selected. Based on the Large Explanatory Dictionary of the Russian Language by S.A. Kuznetsov and the Explanatory Dictionary of the Russian Language by D.N. Ushakov, the plural forms of these nouns and their usage were analyzed. It was revealed that the plural forms of the nouns under consideration can be used in at least one meaning. It was also discovered that the morphological criterion for distinguishing between the lexico-grammatical categories of concreteness/abstractness is not stable and, therefore, turns out to be inapplicable to a number of words.

Surprise me Softly: The Element of Surprise in Designing Museum Experiences

Surprise me Softly: The Element of Surprise in Designing Museum Experiences

Author(s): Daniela Angelina Jelinčić,Karla Jelinčić / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

Experience design has become a widely discussed topic. Museums use experience design for engaging their visitors and culture offers exceptional tools for it. Visual arts and music are particularly effective in eliciting visitors’ emotions. However, there are a number of visual and acoustic cues that influence museum visitor response behaviours. Understanding the ways in which the human brain processes information provides a basis for furthering experience design principles. This study focuses on the emotion of surprise, considered especially effective for engaging visitor attention, providing meaning and affecting memory. The methodology involved monitoring psychophysiological responses and self-reports to assess research participants’ reactions to visual/acoustic stimuli. The aim was to confirm/ detect types of sensory stimuli that generate the emotion of surprise, to see if participants have similar reactions to stimuli and whether individuals’ self-reports are aligned with their psychophysiological reactions. The results showed that musical stimuli are more effective than visual arts in eliciting surprise. While the study showed no clear indications that visual cues have an effect on surprise, musical cues, such as rapid attack, large pitch variation, higher harmonics, slow tempo with a sudden interruption, and sudden change in loudness do seem to play a role. Other cues, such as major key, 4/4 meter, timbral difference, and diatonic harmony also have an impact on the elicitation of surprise. These are important implications for designing museum experiences.

Модель порождения речи школы Л.С. Выготского: основы и верификация

Author(s): T. V. Akhutina / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1-2/2022

In this article, the development and verification of the A.A. Leontiev–T.V. Akhutina model of speech production based on L.S. Vygotsky’s ideas is discussed. The conceptual and experimental background of L.S. Vygotsky’s theory of speech thinking is analyzed. The ideas of this theory opened the way to a prudent approach to understanding the controversy in psycholinguistics of the 1960s–1970s (works by A.A. Leontiev), A.R. Luria’s findings in aphasiology, and the results of T.V. Akhutina’s research in the field of agrammatism. This determined, in many ways, the specifics of the general framework of the model. The major psycholinguistic concepts elaborated in the 1970s are considered, i.e., those introduced by Ch. Fillmore, C. Lee and S. Thompson, J. Bruner and E. Bates, all shedding light on the syntactic operations of the model. The verification of these ideas in the studies describing syntax in children’s speech, “pidgin” and creole languages, etc. is carried out. The recent observations of the problem being studied at the intersection of linguistics, psychology, and neurosciences are summarized. Particular attention is paid to R. Jackendoff and E. Wittenberg’s review of “linear” languages, as well as to the experimental studies by R. Tomlin, A. Myachikov, A. Konopka that fit with the A.A. Leontiev–T.V. Akhutina model of speech production. The conclusion is made about the high explanatory potential of L.S. Vygotsky’s ideas and the model based on them.

Билингвизм и регуляторные функции у дошкольников: обзор исследований

Author(s): A. A. Tvardovskaya,Valerian Faritovich Gabdulkhakov,N. N. Novik / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1-2/2022

Cognitive development and bilingualism in preschool childhood have recently become the pivotal research issues. This article is a brief review of the major studies covering the problem of how bilingualism influences both cognitive development and academic success in preschool children, as well as whether bilingual education determines the development of executive functions. We paid special attention to the data obtained on the development of executive functions in bilingual and monolingual children that help to understand whether there are any differences between the two groups. Using the international citation databases, we identified the publications of the studies of cognitive development in children under the conditions of bilingualism. The results of the analysis were exported in the VOSviewer environment and visualized as key clusters. The findings of the Russian and foreign studies showing the ambiguity of the connection between mono- and bilingualism in children and their cognitive development were described and compared. Interestingly, the studies in preschool institutions of the Republic of Tatarstan (Russia) established that bilingualism has a positive effect on the cognitive abilities of children, if the anthropology of the linguistic personality (types of bilingualism) and the multicultural conditions of language interference and transposition are taken into account.

Why Laughter Heals? A Review on the Use of Humor in Therapy

Author(s): Selda Kanbur,Şule Baştemur / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

Humor is an important tool for expressing many emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger and surprise. In recent years, the use of humor has started to gain the quality of a therapy approach. The use of humor in therapy helps clients to express meaningless situations or inconsistencies in their lives in a humorous way by making them entertaining. At this point, it is very important for the counselor to be able to understand the purpose of the clients' arrival and their sense of humor depending on this purpose and to make interventions accordingly. Since the concepts of humor therapy and Laughter Therapy / Laughter Yoga are often used interchangeably in the literature, this study synthesizes both therapy approaches and tries to reveal their elements and importance. In this review, it is aimed to examine all aspects of the emergence of the use of humor in therapy, basic concepts, sub-dimensions of humor, counselor-client relationship using humor in therapy, humor therapy process, laughter therapy / laughter yoga process, laughter therapy / laughter yoga techniques, studies on the use of humor in therapy, why humor should or should not be used in therapy. With these aspects, it is thought that this study will contribute to the literature and help to fill the existing gaps. In addition, it is predicted that the widespread use of humor therapy and the use of humor therapy in different studies will benefit many clients and experts working in this field.

Identification with Game Characters: Theoretical Explanations, Predictors, and Psychological Outcomes

Author(s): Özlem İskender / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

This review investigates theoretical explanations, predictors, and psychological outcomes of identification with game characters. Theoretical explanations depended on Cohen’s conceptualization of identification with media characters, wishful identification, similarity identification, embodied presence concepts, self-perception, self-discrepancy, and social identity theories. Predictors included customizability, how the character is perceived (ideal, attractive, similar, real), narrative, immersion, presence, age, time spent playing/playing history, player’s psychological characteristics, and perceived performance. Psychological outcomes included enjoyment, flow experience, addiction, problematic gaming, playing motivations, self-efficacy, competence, short-term outcomes (change in aggression, empathy), intention to continue playing, game-related spending, social identification, and in-group bias. The self-discrepancy perspective provides the most prevalent explanation, which proposes that game characters are closer to players’ ideal selves, and identification with the game character reduces their self-discrepancies. However, the social identity perspective offers more overarching explanations discussing identification with game-related groups (groups created within the game and game community) and the game character together, thus pointing to a bigger picture where players develop social identities through interaction with game-related groups. Therefore, unlike other explanations discussing game character identification as a temporary experience, the social identity perspective indicates it may be a lasting experience. Regarding predictors, only two were game-related (customizability, narrative), while most were player-related (e.g., age, time spent playing, player’s psychological characteristics), which might show that player characteristics deserve more attention than the game itself to understand the identification process. Concerning psychological outcomes, while two were positive (enjoyment, flow experience) and two were negative (addiction, problematic gaming), most had various aftermaths, such as a short-term outcome of an increase in aggression or empathy.

Experiences of Older People in the COVID-19 Process towards Stigmatization and Anxiety: A Qualitative Study

Experiences of Older People in the COVID-19 Process towards Stigmatization and Anxiety: A Qualitative Study

Author(s): Nuray Şimşek,Eda Albayrak,Yurdagül Selvi,Oktay Bektas / Language(s): English Issue: Suppl. 1/2022

The aim of the study is to investigate the experiences of elderly individuals regarding stigma and anxiety during the COVID 19 pandemic. This study is a study conducted with a hermeneutic approach, one of the qualitative methods and phenomenology models. After obtaining ethical permission, the document and interview data of 10 elderly individuals selected through criterion sampling were analyzed with descriptive analysis. Findings consist of a theme, seven categories and forty-eight codes. Participants emphasized that the pandemic process caused anxiety and that they felt stigmatized in this process. The participants stated that the lethality of the COVID 19 disease and the high rate of transmission caused them anxiety. In addition, they stated that the restrictive measures taken for the elderly made them feel like a source of illness and this caused them to feel stigmatized. In conclusion, it was observed that the participants had high anxiety and stigmatized feelings in this process. They stated that they pay attention to the mask, distance and hygiene rules, which are the methods of protection from the virus, to cope with anxiety, and that they have a spiritual orientation. However, they did not have any statements about the feelings of anxiety and stigmatization they experienced in this process to share with their relatives or health workers and to get help. Accordingly, it is thought that it would be beneficial for healthcare professionals working with elderly individuals to encourage these individuals to share their feelings. In addition, healthcare professionals should take part in activities to raise awareness of the community about the COVID 19 process and the measures taken to prevent stigma.

An Integrative Perspective on Understanding Human Functioning: Positive Clinical Psychology

Author(s): Özlem Öztürk,Zeynep Maçkalı / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2023

The number of studies conducted with a holistic perspective as an alternative to the traditional clinical psychology approach has increased. It is noteworthy that studies examine the effects of positive concepts on human health in addition to discomfort. In this study, it was aimed to examine four concepts that are frequently researched in positive psychology, namely well-being, psychological resilience, hope and coping in an integrative context. Also, it was aimed to give information about the positive clinical psychology approach and the studies which investigate these four positive concepts. Studies were searched through PsycARTICLE, EBSCO and Pubmed electronic databases. Totally 208 studies were reached and 26 articles were included in this review article. As a result, the effective results in treatment of psychological disorders and increase of well-being of an individual with positive psychology interventions suggest that it is important to expand the positive perspective in clinical psychology. It is thought that it may be clinically important that the presence/increase of positive concepts as well as the absence/decrease of psychopathologies should be one of the treatment targets of mental health specialists. It is hoped that adopting an integrative perspective in future studies will enrich empirical research in the field of psychotherapy.

TEACHING TRIP AND EDUCATIONAL SOFTWARE

Author(s): Ioan Maxim / Language(s): English Issue: 17/2022

The teaching trip, as organizational form of teaching, is situated at the border between formal and non-formal education. An adequate teaching scenario for a teaching trip can place this activity in the field of formal education definitely. In educational terms, non-formal educational trip makes from itself, an attractive, dynamic and consistent activity, strongly influenced by technical memo elements, which combines intuitive scientific argument, rigorously and systematically. The paper aims to implement in an unitary teaching scenario, the attractive and spectacular elements specific to the educational trip, with the ones of formal teaching, leading to a logical project of educational software, which constitutes a turning point in the designing learning programs. The teaching scenario of the learning program allows to the student, to approach scientific context of the lesson, intuitive initially, afterwards using traditional teaching methods and procedures, as exposure, demonstration, explanation and also, to be presented the scientific content to the student, systematically and organized. The learning program creates a virtual scientific space and allows the student to explore and discover new content elements in a logical and intuitive context. Prospective manner places the student at the center of cognitive context, maintaining and feeding its interest for scientific content. The logical sequence of content elements generates a succession of visual frames for the virtual scientific space of the lesson. This script element of didactic scenario is inspired from the trip didactic. The teacher, who intervenes with rigorous explanations supported with audio, video or text format arguments, is the guide of the student in the virtual space of lesson. A return in similar contextual frame offers the possibility of implementation, a sequential feedback and formative assessment, in the learning program. The new manner of designing the learning programs, presented in the paper, allows an easy removal from the paradigm of instruction centered on student and an approach to the paradigm of learning based on resources.
