Development of the internationalization “abroad” in Polish and Ukrainian higher education

Development of the internationalization “abroad” in Polish and Ukrainian higher education

Author(s): Marta Tutko,Tetiana Golubieva / Language(s): English Issue: 34/2016

The scientific goal of the paper is to present the issue of the development of internationalization “abroad” in Polish and Ukrainian higher education. The leading research method is a comparative method, specifically the method of international comparison. The authors focus on the national and institutional level comparison of the development of internationalization "abroad" in Polish and Ukrainian higher education systems. In addition to the comparative method, the authors applied the method of secondary research (desk research), the method of description and analysis and critique of the scientific literature. By using the source materials and indicated numerical data, it is possible to verify the thesis. The process of reasoning in the article was conducted in the following stages. First, the definition of internalization in higher education was given with respect to Polish and Ukrainian approach. Next, the stages in the development of internationalization “abroad” in Polish and Ukrainian higher education were featured. Afterwards, the development process of internationalization was presented on the background of processes occurring in the European Higher Education Area. The paper ends with conclusions. The conclusions drawn in the paper allowed to verify the thesis. In both countries, Poland and Ukraine, the diversity of activities in frame of internationalization "abroad” occur. Among these activities mobility of students and academic teachers remain the most visible in Poland as well as in Ukraine. The development of internationalization "abroad" in relation to mobility of projects, programmes and providers seems to be more advanced in Poland.

Denominal verbs and creativity in child Romanian

Denominal verbs and creativity in child Romanian

Author(s): Adina Camelia Bleotu / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

The current paper looks at the meaning of denominal verbs, i.e. verbs derived from nominal roots, through an experiment testing how Romanian children (Mean age: 4, Age range: 3-5) and adults understand nonce (non-existent) denominal verbs created from existing nouns such as a cireşi ‘to cherry’ or a vulpi ‘to fox’. We show that children tend to be more “literal” in their interpretation, understanding such novel denominal verbs as actions/processes involving the actual entity denoted by the nominal root. In contrast, adults prefer ‘figurative’ interpretations in certain contexts, for instance, when the nominal root refers to an animal (a vulpi ‘to behave like a fox’). The results can be explained either cognitively, through children’s preference for literal interpretations at this stage in language acquisition, or structurally, through a preference for a structure which is simpler from a lexico-syntactic point of view, combining mostly action “light” verbs (rather than a whole range of light verbs) with nouns (rather than roots or OBJECT like N entities). In addition, we notice that both children and adults show an animacy bias, mostly producing sentences referring to animate entities, as well as an intransitivity bias, using intransitive verbs more than transitive ones.

„Никой не ме обича“ в контекста на юношеското разбиране за родителска любов в полето на асоциалността

Author(s): Doroteya Duneva / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2023

Adolescence is a period of rapid physiological and psychological changes. The transformation of the child into an adolescent puts the entire family system to the test. This is a time of examination of what has been done in terms of education by the parents, of their authority, ways of communication, and emotional connection. Despite the demonstrated withdrawal of grown children and the dominance of peer relationships, parents are and remain the force that provides support, acceptance, and understanding. When, for various reasons, this does not happen, the adolescent feels angry, confused, and very lonely, and could find an opportunity for appreciation and recognition in destructive antisocial decisions.

ROLUL ACTIVITĂŢILOR EXTRAŞCOLARE, AL PERSONALITĂŢII ŞI AL INFLUENŢELOR SOCIALE ÎN EXPLORAREA CARIEREI ŞI ÎN PROCESUL DE LUARE A DECIZIILOR LA ELEVII DE CLASA A XII-A

Author(s): Ștefana Buhăescu-Ciucă / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

The present study is testing the role of extracurricular activities in the career exploratory intentions and decision-making using the lenses of the career self-management model of Social Cognitive Career Theory - SCCT (Lent & Brown, 2013). The study also includes the socioeconomic status, social support, and role models, as well as personality factors as predictors. We used hierarchical linear regression to test the role of the added precursors to extracurricular activities and their role in career exploration goals and decidedness. Data were collected using an online survey filled in by 233 students in twelfth grade. Involvement in pro-social activities, the influence of role models, and the level of agreeableness were significant predictors of exploratory intentions while exam preparation was the only significant predictor of career decidedness. Implications for practice are discussed.

KICK-START DE ALFABETIZARE PENTRU TOŢI. REZULTATE COMPARATIVE DE LA CLASA PREGĂTITOARE DIN ROMÂNIA

Author(s): Bianca Balea,Mária Kovács,Codruța Temple / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Research shows that reading performance in the early grades is a strong predictor of reading ability throughout the school years, and is therefore likely to impact children’s academic and career trajectories, with those of children coming from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds being negatively impacted (Cunningham & Stanovich, 1997; Dolean et al., 2019). Using a comparative approach, the present study aimed to determine whether there were differences in literacy skills development in children from low socio-economic backgrounds who received specifically developed emergent literacy instruction (intervention group, IG) and those who did not (control group, CG). The literacy program was developed based on recent scientific evidence (Bear, 2022) emphasizing the importance of the following in emergent literacy instruction: concepts about print (1), alphabet and letter-sound knowledge (2), concept of word (3), phoneme awareness (4), and word recognition (5). The intervention took place in the 2021-2022 school year, over an 8-month period, and consisted of using emergent literacy assessments, as well as literacy learning materials developed specifically for the preparatory grades. The total sample consisted of 300 children in 25 preparatory grade classes, divided between intervention and control groups (260 and 40 students, respectively), who were all assessed on the five abovementioned emergent literacy concepts and skills, pre- and post-intervention. ANOVA analyses were conducted to test for differences between children in the two groups. Results highlight significant differences in terms of literacy development, with children in IG showing higher scores on all the five measures than children in the CG.

Mládí a stáří jako kulturně konstruované tělesné identity případ české vývojové psychologie druhé poloviny 20. století

Mládí a stáří jako kulturně konstruované tělesné identity případ české vývojové psychologie druhé poloviny 20. století

Author(s): Josef Řídký / Language(s): Czech Issue: 01/2016

In this study, youth and old age are viewed as culturally constructed physical identities, whereby the main focus is on the ways in which their representation was constructed within the discourse of Czech developmental psychology of the second half of the 20th century. The investigation is framed by the introduction of the term corpus, by which the author tries to highlight the specific nature of these physical identities. Corpus is defined by three groups of characteristics: it forms an inventory of characteristic qualities; it locates identity as something original in the human body; it treats the particular identities as separate animal species. On the axis of these groups, it turns out that developmental psychology disqualifies both youth and old age in favour of the dominant identity of adulthood. While youth has an adult body at its disposal, lack of experience and excessive emotivity make it questionable and it is perceived that they require control so as not to threaten a development into a future adult. Old age, on the other hand, is disqualified by weakness of the body and overabundance of experience, which turn it into a mere caricature of a former adult. Both identities are thus subjected to a symbolic adultocentrism.

Corporeality Affected by the Loss of a Loved One – Manifestations of the Body in the Experiences of Former Wards of Social Rehabilitation Centers

Author(s): Agnieszka Jaros / Language(s): English Issue: 62/2023

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate the bodily dimension of the loss of a loved one and ways of dealing with such an experience manifested in action. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The main research problem was formulated as a question: How do former wards of social rehabilitation centers experience and what meaning do they assign to the death of a loved one? The study used the biographical method, while the autobiographical narrative interview was used for data acquisition. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The theoretical framework of this study on the boundary situation of the death of a loved one is Karl Jasper’s approach as well as Edith Stein’s theory of empathy, from which analytical codes were derived was discussed. RESEARCH RESULTS: The death of a loved one experienced as a loss generates feelings that manifest in bodily forms of expression. The suffering resulting from the loss led to the development of new patterns of action: escapist and developmental-escapist. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The basic conclusion is that the loss of a love one as a boundary situation, when one is not looked after and lives alone leads to abnormal social functioning. Fear of missing out as a mediator and social capital as a moderator of the relationship between the narcissism and the social media use among adolescents

Fear of missing out as a mediator and social capital as a moderator of the relationship between the narcissism and the social media use among adolescents

Author(s): Lilan Jiang,Aitao Lu,Yuxiang Lin,Siyi Liu,Juan Li,Tianhua Song,Chenxi Li,Xin Huang,Xuebin Wang,Jialing Luo,Liwen Ye,Yexuan Jian,Wenya Zhong / Language(s): English,Serbian Issue: 4/2023

Many risk behaviors, such as cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and problematic social media use (PSMU), are formed and developed during adolescence. These risk behaviors may become even more acute with lasting global economic impacts of the 2020-2022 COVID-19 pandemic. Previous research indicates that narcissism can lead to problematic social media use; however, there is a gap in the knowledge about the mediating and moderating variables facilitating this relationship. This study examines the role of fear of missing out (FoMO) as a mediator in this relationship and the role of social capital as a moderator for this mediation effect among Chinese adolescents during the 2020-2022 COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 1380 adolescents (825 females) anonymously completed the questionnaires which assessed the four variables of interest. Our results showed that fear of missing out mediated the associations between self-superior and other-inferior narcissism and problematic social media use, and this effect was stronger with other-inferior narcissism. Additionally, social capital strengthened the mediation effect of fear of missing out in the relationships between self-superior and other-inferior narcissism and problematic social media use. The results have critical implications for the prevention of adolescents’ PSMU.

Етнокултурни особености в развитието на социалния интерес при деца от ромски произход в предучилищна възраст

Author(s): Nedelina Zdravkova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2023

In preschool age, according to the classics of individual psychology A. Adler and R. Dreikurs, the lifestyle is formed and social interest develops. In its development, each child is placed at the center of a unique social circle of human relationships, namely child - family - teacher. The specific study focused on the manifestations of social interest in preschool children of different ethnic origins. The comparative analysis of the level of social interest in children of different ethnic origins shows statistical differences in its development. However, a very optimistic trend is emerging related to the results of pre-school education and training. The particular advantages, sustainability and effectiveness and the integrating nature of the paradigm of modern preschool education and upbringing in our country are revealed.

Author(s): Antoaneta Mateeva,Penka Hristova,Nadia Koltcheva,Bojan Vasilev,Tsvetina Ivanova-Shindarska,Emilia Mikova,Savka Savova / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

This article presents a portion of the research data collected as part of the international applied research project “Communities for Sciences - Towards Promoting an Inclusive Approach in Science Education.” The project aims to promote inclusive science activities for children and youth in six different European locations. The findings of a project-based collaboration between researchers and kindergarten teachers of 3 groups of 3-4 years old Roma children from Faculteta neighborhood in Sofia are reported. The teachers work at 2 kindergartens situated in this location and run by the Health and Social Development Foundation (HESED). Participatory action research methodology was used to explore the opportunities for the three teams of teachers to apply more inclusive approaches in teaching science to children. Further, the article presents kindergarten teachers’ implicit knowledge and practices concerning child participation in the learning process. The teachers’ practices are discussed within the framework of a theory on levels of child participation. The article emphasizes the importance of creating an appreciative and supportive culture of relationships among teachers in the organization, which allows for an inclusive educational approach to be applied to their work with children. Additionally, the article discusses how broader educational and social contexts can either support or hinder teaching teams in applying their educational approach. The data collected should offer insights on how to develop more effective strategies for implementing inclusive science proposals that meet the specific needs of local communities. This can be achieved through co-creation and active citizen participation.

Author(s): Iulia-Maria PAȘCALĂU (SICOE) / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2023

This paper aims to identify the developmental characteristics of language in preschool children, capturing the impact of the speech therapy program on language development, and utilizing the principles of the TALK program in speech therapy intervention. The study sample consisted of 22 preschoolers, aged between 5-6 years, from a kindergarten in Cluj-Napoca. After dividing the participants into two groups, control and experimental, the evaluation was performed using three assessment tools: the Curriculum TALK, Portage (Language subscale), and the Logopedic Album. A speech therapy intervention program was implemented for the experimental group, followed by a final evaluation conducted using the same assessment tools. After collecting the results from pre and post-tests, all data were centralized in an SPSS database for processing. Thus, by using the paired samples t-test (hypothesis 1), the independent samples t-test (hypothesis 2), and Pearson's bivariate correlation (hypothesis 3), it was found that all research hypotheses were confirmed.

Abordare din perspectivă psiholigvistică a limbajului și comunicării în tulburarea de spectru autist (TSA)

Abordare din perspectivă psiholigvistică a limbajului și comunicării în tulburarea de spectru autist (TSA)

Author(s): Ioana IRIMIA / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2023

Psycholinguistics is a field that combines methods and theories from psychology and linguistics to gain a fuller understanding of human language. The connection between the human psyche and language is the focus of research in psycholinguistics. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a common and heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by language impairment, social and communicative deficits and repetitive behaviours. Echolalia is considered a predominant feature of ASD. Early intervention should be started as soon as a diagnosis is made, as social, play and language domains do not develop at the expected rate or in the expected multimodal, integrated manner. Using the language sample analysis technique, it is observed that echolalia and the number of abstract words do not influence mean utterance length, but the number of novel words correlates with mean utterance length. The psycholinguistic approach helps to gain a deeper understanding of language deficits and influences speech therapy intervention.

Author(s): Janka-Eszter Veres / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2023

In this paper we chose to study the influence of music therapy with the help of Boomwhackers instruments on the following skills: sustained attention, short-term memory, phonemic hearing and reading fluency in students with severe and associated impairments, among students from disadvantaged backgrounds. I considered this type of intervention useful because the effectiveness of music therapy is proven in many situations both in typical children and in those with atypical development. The students participating in the study have music among their passions and because of this, their implication activities was achieved without much difficulty. Also, the use of Boomwhackers was of high interest for the students and they were always excited to participate in the activities. The results obtained in the study prove the effectiveness of the intervention, as improvements were observed in all the evaluated areas.

The Socialization of Stay-behind Children in the Republic of Moldova Following Labour Migration of their Parents

Author(s): Elena Vaculovschi,Galina Ţurcan / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

The labour migration of parents influences stay-behind children, their state of mind and their socialization process. The influences can be both positive and negative. This article analyses how the labour migration of parents from the Republic of Moldova to the European Union influences the process of socialization of stay-behind children and explores the involvement of public authorities in the socialization of these children. Data on which the paper is based were collected in the Republic of Moldova from December 2021 through April 2022, in the course of the development of the CASTLE project. The paper reflects the opinions of members of the transnational families on stay-behind children's socialization. The socialization process of children left at home following the labour migration of their parents faces several challenges. The knowledge of these challenges and their causes can contribute to the establishment of directions and mechanisms for the realization of public policy oriented towards solving children’s social challenges. Given current conditions, organized efforts are required from all socialization agents for the effective socialization of stay-behind children.

The Relationship Between Digital Game Addiction, Executive Functions and Impulsivity in Early Adolescents

The Relationship Between Digital Game Addiction, Executive Functions and Impulsivity in Early Adolescents

Author(s): Tuğba Bozyiğit,Selin Yılmaz / Language(s): English Issue: 28/2023

The current study was largely concerned with the association between digital game addiction, specific cognitive functions especially, three components of executive function (inhibition, set shifting and working memory) and impulsivity in early adolescents. Sampling consisted of 6th (55.1%) and 7th (44.9%) grade middle school students (36 females and 62 males). The mean age of the students was determined as 12.35 years (SD =0.75; age range, 10–14 years). Digital game addiction, inhibition, set shifting, working memory, and impulsivity were evaluated via Digital Game Addiction Scale (DGAS), Stroop Test TBAG Form, Trail Making Test (TMT), Wechsler Memory Scale-III Letter-Number Sequencing Subtest (WMS–III/LNS) and Short Form of Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS- 11-SF), respectively. According to the correlation analysis results, selective and complex attention, inhibition, set shifting, and impulse control were diminished with increasing digital game addiction. There is no significant relationship between digital game addiction and working memory. Consistent with the correlation analysis, structural equation model results revealed that digital game addiction significantly predicts inhibition, set shifting and impulsivity [x2 (15, N = 98) = 7.476, p > 0.5; x2/df = 1.246; RMSEA = .05; CFI = .95; GFI = .97]. As a results, it can be concluded that digital game addiction should be controlled in order to manage impulses and develop high-capacity cognitive skills in children.

Author(s): Zornitsa Ganeva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2023

Тhe article presents examines the emotional aspect of school life. Her focus is on the prevention of violence and bullying at school through the development of emotional and social skills. Negative behavioral manifestations (related to aggression, bullying and violence) are seen as an expression of their unmet needs, for which they lack the behavioral skills to express in a socially acceptable way. The formation of emotional and social competence in children does not only aim at prevention, but will lead to better interpersonal relationships and better mental (emotional) health. In contrast to aggression, violence and bullying at school is the improvement of children's emotional resources.
