Nowadays, when screen use is widespread among children and adolescents, mothers and fathers need more accurate information to understand their children's behaviors, support them and increase their functionality. Because of the limitations of measurement tools, there are limited number of studies examining parents' approaches to screen use in the Turkish sample. In this study, it is aimed to adapt the scale developed by Van den Bulk and Van den Bergh (2000) to our culture, and to conduct validity and reliability studies. The study consists of two stages. The sample of the first study consisted of 443 secondary school, high school and university students. While 284 (64.1%) of the sample were female and 157 (35.4%) were male, 2 (0.5%) participants did not specify their gender. The mean age of the sample was 17.59 (SD=3.07). The sample of the second study consists of 1122 secondary school, high school and university students. This sample includes 630 (56.1%) women and 492 (43.9%) participants. The mean age of the sample was 16.22 (SD=3.02). Demographic Information Form, Parenting Approaches to Screen Usage Scale, Parent and Adolescent Relationship Inventory (ParQ) and Psychological Control Scale were used for data collection. Exploratory factor analyzes, correlation analyzes and confirmatory factor analyzes were performed in order to determine the factor structure of the Scale of Mother and Fatherhood Approaches to Screen Use. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the 19-item mother form of the scale included a 4-factor structure and explained 54.42% of the total variance. It was revealed that the 20-item father form also contained a 4-factor structure and explained 66.83% of the total variance. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was found to be .85 for the mother form and .90 for the father form. To result, it has been shown that the Scale of Mother and Fatherhood Approaches to Screen Use has valid psychometric properties for the sample of our country. Moreover, it was revealed that there are significant relationships between parenting approaches and both parental coalition and perceived psychological control from mother and father.

SOSYAL MEDYADA DİŞİL US’UN KİMLİK İNŞASI: INSTAGRAM ÖRNEĞİ

Author(s): Gamze Gezginci,Murat Özdemir,Canan ATAĞAN,Bayram ATAĞAN / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 57/2023

The individuals who make up the society, after becoming socialized, take on mass psychology and form a higher identity beyond their own feelings, thoughts and opinions. Thus, a structure emerges beyond the subjective of the individual, which was necessary to appear compatible with the society and to take a place in that society. With the spread of social media, which allows interaction and gives a feeling of freedom, the feminine mind has begun to be reconstructed by the web. He started to design the manifestations of his role as a refugee, the limited space of freedom offered to him, as a part of his self-formation. In the previous stages, the woman, who showed her presence in line with the choices of her own house and belongings during the marriage process, started to design and present her profile, which is her home on social media, with descriptions and visuals that would express herself. The "biography" field offered by Instagram, one of the most preferred applications on Social Media, is a reflection of the roles that individuals see in themselves. Here, the individual unwittingly describes the roles he takes in life. In this study, which was carried out using the focus group interview technique, there are results such as the perceptions formed in the individual as a result of the personal unconscious and the collective unconscious from an early age, that the individual is important in the process of forming an identity, and that the woman acts according to the expectations of the society.

Study on the Contribution of the Dancesport in Enhancing the Quality of Life in Visually Impaired Children

Study on the Contribution of the Dancesport in Enhancing the Quality of Life in Visually Impaired Children

Author(s): Valentin Claudiu Luca,Liliana Mihăilescu / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2022

This study aims at providing scientific arguments regarding the dancesport contribution in enhancing the quality of life of visually impaired children. Thus, a series of bio-motor tests and assessments (push-ups, squats, sit-ups, back extensions, trunk flexion while sitting and the Matorin test), psychological assessments (the Anxiety Test and the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory Test), as well as a series of anthropometric measurements (height, weight and arm span) and postural observations were performed on 30 pupils attending the Special Secondary School for the Visually Impaired in Bucharest (RO: Şcoala Gimnazială Specială pentru Deficienţi de Vedere). 15 of them attended the dancesport classes organised at school for one year.At the end of this period, the previously applied tests and performed measures were taken again, and the initial and final results were compared, while analysing the impact that the implementation of the elaborated teaching strategy had on the experimental group compared to the control group. In order to check the statistical significance between the initial testing and the final one, the Wilcoxon test and the Student’s T-test were employed. Thus, the conclusion could be drawn that attending the dancesport classes had a major influence on the visually impaired pupils’ bio-motor and psychological evolution, since statistically significant differences were recorded in most of the applied tests and assessments. The differences encountered in the control group were much smaller, and statistically and mathematically non-significant.

The Impact of Storytelling on the Preschoolers' Psycho-Emotional Development

The Impact of Storytelling on the Preschoolers' Psycho-Emotional Development

Author(s): Mihaita Roca,Marta Vicol / Language(s): English Issue: 4 Sup.1/2022

Known as the golden age of childhood, the period between 3 and 7 years old is characterized by an obvious evolution from a state of general equilibrium within the family environment, to a state of great instability and expansion. The preschooler is moving briskly towards more appropriate conduct of social conveniences and develops a lot of independence, contributes decisively to the establishment of his own internal structure, the Self, and launches into the universe of imagination. An intense psycho-emotional development is now supported by a continuous interrogation fuelled by countless "why" and "how", and great curiosity is a fascinating motive towards the world of storytelling, as a place of expression of thoughts, feelings and finally, actions. The method of storytelling in various current pedagogies, such as that proposed by Franz Kett, proves its effectiveness precisely by the happy combination of imagination and story, on one hand, and the extremely important role of sensations and perceptions in the mental and emotional plane, on the other. The universe of childhood thus has the chance to be a place of symbolic integration of dialogue with itself and with the world.

Youth between discipline and ritual

Youth between discipline and ritual

Author(s): Samira Cîrlig,Alin Bulumac / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

This essay highlights the importance of discipline for young people today. Discipline plays a crucial role in the formation of young people as it reduces their inflated egos. When we talk about an egocentric generation, we are automatically talking about a generation whose discipline is lacking or has been seriously damaged. Lack of discipline has serious effects, from the mental (slowing down of cognitive skills) to the physical (childhood obesity is the ideal example). The undisciplined generation has been significantly affected by the presence of the 'online' in their lives, which occupies almost all their time. Mircea Eliade argues that the solution to this problem is for young people to rediscover the sacred. It is therefore the sacred that both clarifies and disciplines young people and protects them from the dangers of an overdeveloped ego.

GÖRSEL SANATLAR DERSİNDE DUYUŞSAL DAVRANIŞ EĞİTİMİNİN ÖĞRENCİ ÇALIŞMALARINA YANSIMASI

Author(s): Nagihan Caner,Hüseyin Elmas / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 98/2022

Affective behaviors refer to the part of one’s attitudes and behaviors related to emotions. Affective behaviors reflect one’s personality traits. Children develop personality traits at an early age in the family and school environment. Therefore, school curricula should include activities for the development of cognitive abilities related to knowledge and affective behaviors related to values and emotions. Visual arts lessons are very suitable for affective behavior education. They allow children to express their feelings and thoughts as they are and to interact with their friends because they are delivered in workshops. This study aimed to determine how affective behavior education in visual arts classes affected students' drawings. The research was limited to empathy, one of the affective behaviors. The study employed a mixed research design. In the quantitative part, it adopted a single-group pretest-posttest experimental design. In the qualitative part, it employed theme analysis. Since this was an experimental study, data were collected using a single-group pretest-posttest method. In addition, interview data, as well as written and visual documents (story completion and drawing), were collected by asking questions in the classroom environment. The qualitative data were analyzed using the thematic analysis method. The quantitative data were analyzed using percentage and frequency values. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The results showed that participants had significantly higher post-test story completion and drawing scores than the pretest scores, indicating an increase in their empathy levels.

Материалистична ориентация и психично благополучие при юношите в 11-12 клас

Author(s): Vera Todorova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2020

The aim of the current study is to look for theoretically and empirically grounded proof for the correlation between aspirations – extrinsic and intrinsic- determining the motivation – and the psychological wellbeing of adolescents in 11th grade. Materialistic orientation is expressed in the preferences of extrinsic goals such as fame, wealth and image, while the intrinsic aspirations are related to preferences of aspirations for personal growth, personal relationships and community contribution. High level of psychological wellbeing is measured through the six elements from K. Ryff’s definition: self-acceptance, positive interaction with others, autonomy, managing of environment, meaning and personal growth. The research includes a group of 50 students in two Bulgarian high schools.

Imagery: A Review

Author(s): Güneş Öztürk / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

Modern neuroscience has shown that relaxing images cause the brain to release high levels of serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin, which reduce anxiety, block cortisol and increase neuroplasticity. Modern medicine positions the human being as passive, helpless, in need of external help and in need of repair. However, far beyond this passive role, human beings should be seen as a being with the physical and spiritual power to repair themselves. The common point that all the studies examined in this study converge on is that imagery, which is an intrinsic ability, can be used as a low-cost, effective mental treatment tool. In some studies, imagery was defined as a more effective method than pharmacological interventions. Imagery is used in a wide range of diseases from psychotic disorders to mental disorders such as cancer, asthma, migraine, hypertension, immune system diseases, anxiety and depression. From a psychoanalytic perspective, the imagery technique, which is thought to function as impulse satisfaction and a defense mechanism, is also widely used in schools such as mindfulness-oriented therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and dialectical therapy. This review first discusses imagery and its use in history, and then describes current research on imagery applications on different diseases. In addition, it is written to emphasize the lack of research on the mechanisms through which this personal and inner power, which is thought to affect the efficiency of treatment in whichever field of physical or psychological help is sought, operates in the mind and to encourage new research.

On Language Cognition Relations and Evolution of Language

Author(s): Fatma Ebru Köse / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

One can understand the importance of language with its relation to mental activities such as memory and thinking. Language, a crucial human ability, has long attracted the attention of various theorists and philosophers. Language, by its nature, interacts with many biological, cultural and psychological factors. This article has drawn a general framework by bringing together the views from disciplines such as linguistics, psychology, anthropology, biology and neuroscience. On the one hand, while the theoretical opinions about language are included, on the other hand, language is discussed in the context of the changes we went through by separating from our common ancestor in the evolution process. When dealing with language, it is possible to talk about our differences from animals, the interaction of language with our cognitive processes and its organization in the brain. The views put forward by philosophers such as Plato and Descartes about the relationship between language and cognitions have expanded by Chomsky, Pinker, Dunbar and others on the evolution of language. In this article, evolutionary psychology, which strives to understand language and its relationship with cognitions, is emphasized by combining the data of modern evolutionary biology and cognitive psychology. Language is acquired quickly and without the intense need for learning experiences, thanks to innate schemas, suggests that evolution formed these schemas. According to another view, the influence of the environment and culture gains importance instead of innatism. In addition, different opinions on the evolution of language are briefly discussed. Discussion topics include triggers of language development in evolution. These are related to biological and cultural influences, influences of vocalization and hand gestures on language. When thinking about language and its evolution, it is inevitable to observe and examine cognitive processes and thought. Multidisciplinary studies can also provide important information about the evolution of language while trying to understand the complex relationship between language and cognition.

Author(s): Vanya Avramova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2022

Education in Bulgaria occupies an important place in the value system of Bulgarians, and this priority gained even greater importance in the process of modernization of the country's economic and social structures. A large number of children leave school prematurely or never even cross its threshold, a phenomenon that leads to a severe form of social inequality. Creating conditions for regular attendance at school and active work during class are important for the future of every student. They are a guarantee of his success, a pledge for better qualifications and greater opportunities for realization. In the context of policies for the development of inclusive education, the trend of integrating children with special educational needs into general education schools continues to develop. The risks of these children leaving school prematurely are related to insufficient preparation of kindergartens and schools for the inclusion of these children. This includes all factors of the material base, educational environment, human and financial resources that do not meet the requirements for implementing the principles of inclusive education. One of the most important prerequisites for children to continue their education is working in conditions of cooperation and partnership between the most important social groups in which the child participates - family, school and society. This creates a need to research these interactions and develop a model including approaches, methods, tools and activities to optimize interactions in the context of inclusive education.

Sleep Disorders during Adolescence

Sleep Disorders during Adolescence

Author(s): Serkan YAZICI,Bedriye ÖNCÜ ÇETİNKAYA / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Sleep disorders during adolescence period increase each year and adversely affect the physical and mental health of adolescents. After-school social activities and various work outside the school may cause delays in bedtime. In addition, there can be shifts in the circadian rhythm due to a number of biological changes seen in the transition to adolescence, which can result in a wide range of sleep problems, such as not being able to fall asleep at night, difficulty waking up in the morning, daytime sleepiness, sleep deprivation and deterioration in sleep quality. It is important to know the causes of sleep disorders, possible effects on physical health and mental health, and protective and risk-forming factors seen in adolescent period; to intervene in these disorders and to develop preventive measures. Preventive measures, such as increasing awareness about sleep disorders in adolescents, informing families and adolescents about the issue, and organizing school start-up times for this age group, may contribute significantly to solving this important issue, which has increased year-to-year.

Effect of Emotional Content on Memory Characteristics: Emotional Valence, Emotional Intensity, and Individual Emotions

Author(s): İnci Boyacıoğlu,Kıvanç Konukoğlu,Tolga Ergiyen / Language(s): English Issue: Suppl. 1/2022

The aim of the present study is to examine the relationships between the emotional valence and emotional intensity of autobiographical memories and the phenomenological characteristics of memories in the context of individual emotions and memory types. Seven hundred and sixty-four students (514 female, 250 male) from Dokuz Eylul University participated in the study. Participants were asked to recall an childhood memory, a self-defining memory, or a romantic relationship memory. After thinking about the memory they remember, they were requested to fill out the Autobiographical Memory Characteristics Questionnaire and a scale for intensity of individual emotions. Regression analyses showed that emotional intensity of the memories predicted the sensory details, rehearsal, and preoccupation with emotions. In moderatedmediation analyses, mediating effects for emotional intensity were detected between individual emotions and memory characteristics, except for the negative self-esteem emotions. Among these analyses, a moderating effect of memory types was detected only for the relationships between hostile emotions and anxiety-related emotions and the memory characteristics through the mediation of emotional intensity. While the intensity of singular emotions showed stronger relationship with emotional valence, the main variable that predicted memory characteristics overall was the emotional intensity

Refugee Children in the Scope of Mental Health Services at School

Author(s): Faruk Bozdağ,Naif Ergün / Language(s): English Issue: Suppl. 1/2022

Schools play an important role in the psychosocial, academic, and professional development of refugee children. Specifically, psychological counselors and guidance (PCG) experts who provide mental health services in schools have a critical role in this process. The way of approach to the problems, areas of difficulty, support needs, and suggestions of PCG experts who have experience working with refugee children can increase the quality of the services to be provided in this direction. In this study based on qualitative design, the experiences of PCG experts who have worked with refugee children were examined. The data were collected from 38 PCG experts. The data were analyzed with the thematic analysis technique. As a result of the analyses, 27 sub-themes related to six themes were determined: the perceptions of the PCG experts about refugee children, their approach to refugee children, the demands of refugee children, the activities carried out for refugee children, the competence to work with refugee children, and effective intervention proposals for refugee children. It has been determined that PCG experts have a realistic perception of refugee children, they carry out various activities towards refugee children in a professional manner in line with their demands, and they develop various coping methods against difficulties in this process. Although working with refugee children contributes to improving the professional skills of PCG experts, PCG experts need training to giving effective services to refugee children such as non-language-based methods, trauma education, refugee rights, psychoeducation and play therapy activities. Based on PCG experts’ experiences, they offer various recommendations for effective interventions for refugee children. In line with the results obtained, it has been evaluated that school counseling services can be the pioneer of activities to increase positive experiences in order to increase the mental health of refugee children.

Predictive Effect of Social Cognitive Skills on Social Anxiety

Author(s): Nesibe Olgun Kaval,Haluk Arkar / Language(s): English Issue: Suppl. 1/2022

The main purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between social anxiety and social cognition skills (emotion identification/ discrimination, theory of mind, attribution bias, social functioning) and to investigate the predictive power of social cognition skills on social anxiety. In the study, it was also investigated whether social anxiety, social cognition skills and depression scores differed according to gender, age, reported diagnosis status and anxiety level. The sample of the study consisted of a total of 385 participants between the ages of 18-60. The research data were collected from the participants online using the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale, the Facial Emotion Identification and Facial Emotion Discrimination Tests, Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test, the Internal, Personal and Situational Attributes Scale, the Social Functioning Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Sociodemographic Information Form. It was determined that there was a negative relationship between social anxiety and emotion recognition, emotion discrimination and mind reading, and a positive relationship with externalization bias and depression. It was found that depression, emotion recognition and discrimination, mind reading, and antecedent social activities scale scores significantly predicted social anxiety. These variables explain 52% of the total variance related to social anxiety. In addition, when the depression effect was controlled, it was seen that social cognition skills explained 32% of the variance related to social anxiety. It was determined that the deterioration in social cognition skills and depression scores were associated with an increase in social anxiety. According to the results obtained from the research, suggestions were made to prevent social anxiety. It is suggested that it would be beneficial to include activities to develop social cognition skills, which are important for individuals’ interpersonal communication, within intervention programs.

In our practice we have been more often encountering a problem connected with children’s delayed speech development. There’s been an increase in the number of 3-year-old toddlers who haven’t formed their speech abilities or their speech abilities are evident delays and unsatisfactory. There are variable factors forming this tendency and for some cases even unknown factors, but it’s indisputable that the family is the main social cell in which the child is supposed to form its speech abilities. This study is to find an answer to the question whether and to what degree the emotional distance or the overwhelming attention and expectations are crucial to the forming and developing of the child’s speech.
