Terrorisme légionnaire et ordonnances antisémites. La Région Suceava d’octobre 1938 à septembre 1940
The article describes the events in Suceava Region (Bukovina plus Hotin and Dorohoi counties) between October 1938 and September 1940 as well as their connection with similar occurrences in the rest of Romania. It discusses the terror attacks of the Legion of Archangel Michael targeting Jewish communities and Romanian authorities. It also analyses the anti-Semitic (re)actions of the ʻroyal resident’ (regional governor) Gheorghe Alexianu. The paper concludes that Alexianu’s policy was mainly determined by his own nationalist anti-minority and anti-Semitic beliefs and legitimated by the general political stance of the royal regime. It also shows how the Romanian State defended Alexianu’s policy against protests from within and without Romania.
