For the first time, the international study PISA 2015 includes a special “Collaborative problem Solving” module in which students solve team tasks with one, two or more virtual partners. The study was conducted among 15-year-olds from all over the world. Its main objective is to assess whether students can effectively engage in problem-solving activities with one or more partners sharing their knowledge, skills and efforts to achieve a certain outcome.

Modern education is characterised by student-centered classroom, focus on real-life preparation and lifelong learning, modern and challenging learning environment. In these dynamic and ongoing changes in education, a center role plays the teachers. They need to have the necessary attitudes to face all challenges and develop themselves, and also a set of skills that differ from those of the teachers of decades ago. The aim of this article is to trace historically the concepts of teachers’ professional profile around the World and in Bulgaria, and on this basis to bring out the skills necessary for modern science teachers. Attention is drawn to the change in the role of the teacher, the learning environment, technological progress, family values. The focus of the study is on the views of the founders of constructivism – John Dewey, Lev Vygotsky, Jerome Bruner and others – for the professional and personal qualities of the teacher.

This article presents the results of a diagnostic survey conducted in the academic school year 2016/2017, involving 937 students from non-specialized schools (secondary schools, language and maths high schools, vocational high schools) in 7 districts in Bulgaria. The survey was aimed at providing an overall picture of important aspects of scientific literacy as seen by Bulgarian high-school students. The survey tool was a modified version (Clough et al., 2010; Moss, 2012) of the SUSSI questionnaire – Student Understanding of Science and Scientific Inquiry (Liang et al., 2006), translated into Bulgarian. The quantitative analysis of the data gathered through multiple choice questions shows that 59% of the students involved in the survey had an undefined view, 37% – a forming view to an informed view, 3% – an informed view, and only 1% – a forming view to a naïve view. Students’ views dependencies on their cognitive outcomes, gender and the type of school they attend are highlighted through a correspondence analysis.

The study is devoted to the problem of organization and realization of professional education of students – future biology teachers, for formation their methodological skills for work with interactive methods of education with the school pupils. There has been presented fragments of the methodological structure of the lessons to the students. The analysis of the results of the study enables us to draw the conclusion that the presented lessons seem to be successful.

The current article makes a first attempt to introduce a more detailed presentation of the classical suggestopedia as developed by prof. Lozanov and collaborators from the point of view of foreign language teaching. It deals with basic concepts like suggestion-desuggestion, antisuggestive barriers and means of suggestion. It also focuses on the analysis of the basic principles of suggestopedia and their interpretation in the context of language education. The suggestopedic concepts under review are related to important terms such as language acquisition and language learning, active and passive, text-based and discreet item-based language learning. Finally, the article discusses the Bulgarian contribution of suggestopedia as a holistic method to foreign language teaching and personality development.

The main subjects and objects of a society are the people. They are also the creators of labor, of the good and beautiful. The society of people does not only create conditions but it also creates means for life. By using the physical and intellectual abilities it creates a system of productive force and a system of knowledge, different from any other being. Education is a sociological and philosophical immanence, which serves as the basis for all pedagogical principles, notions, opinions, and ideas typified and transcended in the educational area and the educational being of people. Education is a sociological, philosophical, pedagogical, and anthropological process that gives people knowledge, skills, and abilities. Education, through the systematic acquisition of scientific knowledge about nature, society and the human reasoning and it leads to acquisition of skills which develop and establish specific human traits, such as: knowledge, abilities, interests and opinions for different social and philosophical views of the world. Education as a term has many meanings. It implies an institution, a process, content and it is a result of organized or non-organized learning, for development of different cognitive abilities, and the acquisition of different knowledge, skills and habits, such as reading, writing, calculus and general knowledge about physics, the social and economic environment. Education is a part of the society or a sub-system of the global social system. Since society is part of the social system, it has all the characteristics of the global society as a whole.

The paper briefly presents the language situation in Bulgaria and the distribution of different languages on the territory of the country. The ways in which children learn first and second language are discussed, and the advantages of early age simultaneously learning of two languages is advocated. Further, the paper presents the influence of the media and the Internet for Bulgarian language acquisition. Finally, the role of education for the absorption of the Bulgarian language is presented.

This article presents the latest national and international editions, that are prepared by the scientists of the Department of Bulgarian Dialectology and Linguistic Geography at the Institute for Bulgarian Language, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The author draws attention to their potential for use in the process of teaching in Bulgarian language and literature. He discusses various examples of morphological, phonetic and lexical dialect phenomena that are reflected in the art literature studied in the curriculum.

The article presents the multi-volume Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary as one of the main academic works of the Institute for Bulgarian Language which can serve as a valuable practical aid in Bulgarian language teaching. With its flexibility and openness it is another reliable resource for Bulgarian language teaching.

The paper outlines some approaches that evoke active participation of members of a virtual community in development of teaching materials or for organising and conducting educational initiatives online. The two leading models for virtual products development and elaboration are featured - open-source model and crowdsourcing. Original community-sourcing approach is described, along with some results of its approbation in a virtual community focused on mathematics and computer science education for students.

The article examines the Bulgarian language curriculum in secondary school as an internal systemic cause for failure and associated student dropout in the Bulgarian education system. The author states that the curricula do not offer a system of inter-related knowledge and the programs’ content does not correspond to the development characteristics of the children. In summary, the curricula’s shortcomings can be classified in 3 groups: 1. Problems, related to misjudged age characteristics of the adolescents. 2. Problems, associated with the system of teaching of specific linguistic knowledge. 3. Problems, related to the entire cognitive system (imbalance of the cross-subject connections).

The material presents a genealogical model of development of the Bulgarian vocational education. This model of socio-economic mechanisms for professional training and development represents the integration of the various components that are key to the overall professional and personal profile of the specialist, its entry in the society. The text illustrates the rapid movement and synchronous parallel levels in the creation, establishment and regulation before the Liberation in 1878 and during the first decades after that - a true Renaissance period of economic, managerial, educational progress. The thesis is that craftsmanship is the prototype of vocational education in Bulgaria. On this background, the figures of remarkable institutions, pedagogues and managers have stand out. They set the beginning of the Bulgarian vocational schools - centenarians. Their history continues today as the most stable tradition-perspective for the development of Bulgarian vocational education and training in all its forms – formal, non-formal, continuing education for adults, informal education, handicraft work and qualification at the workplace.

Nowadays the problem about the moral upbringing is one of the most difficult and responsible tasks. It is precisely the problems inside the Bulgarian family that had a negative effect on the formation of the child’s personality. It all begins in the family. Every characteristic feature and behavior in children can lead to a successful personality establishment. The relationships between the family members play an extremely important role in the child’s life. They are the first role-models of interpersonal relationships. In the Bulgarian school the relationship with the family must be placed on a new, qualitative level, so that the educational strategy will have an affect not only on the student, but also on his parents. Education is not about obeying the rules, but to find the person in and to improve the communications. This is exactly the reason why the teachers role is so important. The historical knowledge about the development of the moral education enables educators, teachers and mentors, who dedicated their activities to the formation and the establishment of the growing generations, so that to estimate all the specific tasks and requirements with an enriched and mature thought, related to the moral persistence of the personality and to the educational unit.
