Author(s): Maria Vaxevanidou / Language(s): English Issue: 8/2016

The aim of this study is to explore the means, the methods, and the techniques of public diplomacy that a country in crisis, such as Greece, should use. The paper addresses the very issues of whether a country in crisis can conduct public diplomacy and whether it should be recognized as a legitimate and powerful actor in the field. In a broader sense, it focuses on the processes that a country should follow and how a better understanding and framing of its situation, principles, and policy can be provided. A crucial factor for such countries is the choice of communication channels, which includes traditional tools like press releases, letters to editor, editorials, interviews, or more active tools like social media, events, campaigns, and networking. In this paper, three dimensions of public diplomacy are examined, and appropriate tools to be developed in the short, medium and long-term are proposed. The results of the study are based on case studies, methods, and tools employed by Greece during the last years that the country has faced a huge economic crisis. There is a short presentation on the methods that Greece tries to adopt in order to enhance its image worldwide.

THE JOURNALISM BETWEEN POLITICAL INSTRUMENTALIZATION AND TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION

THE JOURNALISM BETWEEN POLITICAL INSTRUMENTALIZATION AND TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION

Author(s): Iskra Koroveshovska / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2019

Democracy begins and ends with the media – according to this worldly recognized sentence, every ordinary Balkan could estimate the democratic perspective of its own country. That is why the effect of the new media (social networks), deserves continuous scientific and research attention, also done in this paper basically through comparative and statistic methods, with specific analysis of the Macedonian case. The media revolution produced largely positive changes in everyday life. But negative effects could not be abstracted: Internet - populism, loss of confidence in the media, fake news and hate speech. Perhaps the first solution that comes to mind is law regulation. But knowing that clear basal of the network services is freedom of speech and expression, any attempt of regulation (objectively or not) is legitimately considered censorship. This paper attempts to answer the question: is it possible journalism to fight fake news through a direct media battle?

Author(s): Simona Iacob / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2021

The country experienced in the past the best systems of education in the region and enjoyed a special reputation for the pre-university and academic system. The fall of Sadam Hussein’s regime, in 2003 and the invasion of the United States destabilized the education system and quality has constantly deteriorated.

Verbal Periphrases in Spanish as a Foreign Language: Language as “a Potential of Meaning” - A Pragmatic and Didactic Approach

Verbal Periphrases in Spanish as a Foreign Language: Language as “a Potential of Meaning” - A Pragmatic and Didactic Approach

Author(s): Victor-Emanuel Ciuciuc / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

e purpose of this paper is to shed some light on the very sinuous subject of verbal periphrasis. When starting to work on verbal periphrasis in Spanish, the first thing that the researcher and / or the ELE teacher will notice will be an enormous difficulty in finding an adjusted definition and a coherent classification of this grammatical category. Likewise, the very scarce work on their uses and functions stands out, since most of the research that deals with this topic focuses on theoretical definitions referring to their formal / categorical nature.

Sintagmas mixtos (español-inglés, rumano-inglés) de alta frecuencia en el sector de los viajes

Author(s): Mihaela Ciobanu / Language(s): Spanish Issue: 1/2021

Many of the words used today in the tourism field come from English. Despite the existence of similar concepts in Spanish and Romanian, today people tend to use English words for all levels of specialization. This preference can be translated as an image of globalization, a characteristic of tourism on all levels and sectors, which does not complicate the decodifying process of the message considering the existence of equivalent explanations, phrases or terms, all of it easing the access to a specialized level in tourism.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE FIGHT FOR HEARTS AND MINDS: GENERATIVE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AS POLITICAL CAMPAIGN INFLUENCE TOOL

Author(s): Dorel DANCIU / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

Social networks are important tools at the hands of political actors due to the direct connection with voters. Candidates and campaign teams can easily send messages to voters and can also see how they react to those messages and access the personal data available in each account. From the aggregation of this data through specific technical instruments, it is also possible to obtain segmented voting profiles. Campaign teams can thus adapt their communication flow to the expectations of the electorate and develop campaign strategies based on data. In the era of digital revolution, political actors' use of generative artificial intelligence through social media gives them the ability to create personalized messages, but also to accurately estimate their impact on individuals and groups. Different state and non-state entities can interfere with ongoing campaigns, influencing the electorate by favoring certain political actors and jeopardizing the democratic practices that should govern the electoral process.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN THE EUROPEAN UNION. LEGISLATIVE BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES OF NON-COMPLIANCE

Author(s): Andreea-Alexandra Dincă / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

The legislative benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) are multifaceted, driving innovation and economic growth while safeguarding citizens' rights. Clear regulations foster a trustworthy environment for investments, facilitating job creation and enhanced efficiency across various sectors, such as healthcare and education. For instance, AI can improve medical diagnostics through advanced data analysis, leading to the discovery of new treatments. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) exemplifies the EU's commitment to protecting personal data, thereby boosting public trust in technology. Furthermore, legislation promotes ethical AI solutions, addressing social and moral implications to prevent abuses. Standardization and interoperability enhance international collaboration and efficiency among AI systems. However, non-compliance with these regulations poses significant risks, including security breaches, discrimination, and severe legal consequences. Organizations face substantial fines for violating laws like GDPR, which can reach up to 4% of global annual revenue. This uncertainty may hinder innovation and complicate international partnerships. Ultimately, while the European AI regulatory framework presents substantial opportunities for economic and social advancement, it is crucial that stakeholders adhere to these standards to ensure ethical and responsible use of AI, safeguarding fundamental rights and fostering sustainable development in society.

PRAGMATICS IN FOOD ADVERTISING

PRAGMATICS IN FOOD ADVERTISING

Author(s): Andreea DINU / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2025

Pragmatics has a very important role in understanding how advertising texts communicate and persuade beyond explicit messages. This paper investigates the frequently used strategies in food advertisements to influence the consumer's behavior and fasten decision-making processes. Through a qualitative approach, the current paper analyzes a diverse corpus of digital media food advertising texts. Implicature, presupposition, deixis, speech acts, and relevance are identified and analyzed by highlighting how these strategies create emotional responses, reinforce cultural values, and establish common assumptions between advertisers and consumers. This research proves that implicature is generally used in suggesting benefits and qualities that are not directly stated; presuppositions deepen the assumption about the health advantages or the quality offered by a product without claiming it. Deictic expressions and speech acts create personal relevance and psychological closeness through commands and invitations. Relevance theory shows how advertisers optimize the communicative impact. The study contributes to pragmatics, advertising, and consumer behavior by explaining how pragmatic strategies operate as powerful tools.

Managing and Assessing Collaborative Group Work in a Multi-Cultural Class: A Pragmatic and Constructive Approach

Author(s): Denisa Dumitrașcu / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

This article undertakes a comprehensive literature review to explore the complexities of managing and assessing collaborative group work in multicultural classrooms in the post-pandemic educational landscape. Anchored in Milton Bennett’s Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) and Jude Carroll’s insights on educational mobility, the review critically examines the theoretical underpinnings and practical challenges associated with diverse learning environments. Bennett’s DMIS is employed as a framework to understand and navigate cultural differences within the classroom, while Carroll’s research provides an in-depth look at the adaptation challenges of educationally mobile students. Through a synthesis of existing literature, this paper proposes practical strategies for educators, aiming to enhance group dynamics and improve assessment methods in a way that promotes inclusivity and fairness. The goal is to enrich the academic discourse by providing a nuanced analysis of multicultural group work management and assessment, drawing from a wide range of empirical studies and case analyses.

Provocări în predarea limbii române ca limbă străină

Author(s): Simona Iacob / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 3/2023

Learning the Romanian language as a foreign language is a continuous challenge, which also involves a deep psychological perspective on the part of the teachers because the students come from various cultures, have a different value system, are far from their environment and family, in a language unknown and a completely new culture. The student's desire to learn, the permanent help offered by the teaching staffand of course the individual study are some of the most important directions that can shape success. The challenges are therefore multiple, varied, contextual, but they can be successfully overcome through active involvement, enthusiasm, work, and perseverance.

Theorization of Violence (Israeli-Palestine Conflict)

Author(s): Georgiana Monica Iorga / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

This paper is a text-applied comparative approach to some thematic aspects of the violence throughout theoretical texts belonging to philosophers like, for instance, Frantz Fanon (1925-1961, psychiatrist, philosopher, author from Martinique). Through violence decolonization is achieved, thus a new man is created. Violence is the native’s mean to an end: the formation of a just society. Colonizer’s violence (the violence of the colonial regime) versus Native’s violence (counter-violence). The appearance ot the settler represents the death of the aboriginal society, cultural lethargy and petrification of individuals. Rather than aiming at an exhaustive survey of this topic in English (almost an impossible task, given the amount of such writing that is being produced in the contemporary global age), I shall aim at focusing on a number of recurrent topics approached throughout the chosen theoretical work. My main intention will be to point out various ways in which the textuality of written texts reflect on issues related to ethnic conflict, self-identification, national movement, colonialist conflict, ideologies, religious dimension from a variety of theoretical perspectives, but situated mainly in a transnational and global light. Place and time are connected to memories and homeland as they represent important values for those who live in their homeland or in diaspora (place: where they were born and they spent their childhood or a part of their lives; time: events, customs and traditions associated to a certain moment in their lives).
